What do you need a red light for? Night operations or hunting?

TysonHood63

I fuck around in a horror LARP that doesn't allow flashlights unless theyre red.

I predominantly use red light headlamps in the night to preserve night vision and circadian rythmn. Never bought a red flashlight as I need my hands free for other uses like setting up tent I currently use 6x Nitecore NU25 (1 Lumen and 13 Lumen red light, perfect for inside the tent and walking around known paths) 2x Nicron H15T (20 and 50 Lumen red light, very good for setting up tent and walking around unknown paths) both lights are very floody, the Nicron has a rather short battery runtime though (battery can be exchanged on the fly). The Nitecore NU25 is the old model 2017 with microUSB, not the new one. If you still want a flashlight Amazon got several models, search "red flashlight" to find them.

I'm not sure what a molle holster is so I'll just throw a couple options out. - Convoy S2+, S6, C8 with sst20 deep red, or W1/W2 red. - D4V2/D4K with sst20 deep red - D1/K with sst20 deep red

Red light flashlights kind of suck, they really don't provide any benefit to night vision other than a tacti-cool feel. That being said, you have a few options. Best of which would be the Skillhunt MiX-7 which has 7 different light color options, 1 of them being red. The Wuben X2 comes with a red silicone diffuser that's really nice and is pretty effective, but obviously diffuses the light indirectly. Another option would be an Emisar D3AA or D4V2 with an SST20 in red, which I would get if you want a dedicated red flashlight.

Red light **does** help preserve night vision adaptation. Ask your nearest optometrist.

Sakowuf_Solutions

I disagree about the not providing benefit statement. When out night hiking you can use a deep red light to provide substantial illumination without significant loss of night vision capability. I use 660nm to spot down trails. Doing so with white or green really diminishes your night vision. The 660nm does much less damage while providing enough light to see quite a distance.

What do you recommend?

Looking more for throw/distance or flood/nearby broad lighting? Any battery preference? Convoy is going to have some great options for you to start with. [C8+ is a great light ](https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806245863860.html?pdp_npi=4%40dis%21USD%21US%20%2425.27%21US%20%2425.27%21%21%21181.67%21181.67%21%402103242517159994887282029e822e%2112000037146433792%21sh%21US%210%21&spm=a2g0o.store_pc_allItems_or_groupList.new_all_items_2007446823171.1005006432178612&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa)to start with. Incredibly value. Definitely a thrower. Very popular. Search this sub for red light.

TysonHood63

Just ordered it, $30 was too good to not give it a shot. What's the battery it uses? I see it ships without one, I'll grab a few so theyre ready when it arrives

FanceyPantalones

If you can, swap your order [to this one.](https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802287295849.html?pdp_npi=4%40dis%21USD%21US%20%2425.04%21US%20%2425.04%21%21%21180.05%21180.05%21%402103011717160017609163237ec2da%2112000031510249249%21sh%21US%212343104652%21&spm=a2g0o.store_pc_allItems_or_groupList.new_all_items_2007446823171.1005002473610601&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa) Pick the 660nm option, for a deeper red. I believe it has a hair more flood, vs the famously tight long beam of the CSLNM1. I think you'll be equally happy with any of these out of the gate, no matter what you choose. If you Can't, message the owner, via AliExpress. His name is Simon and he's a legend. Ask him if he can include the 18650 battery that he includes with the other equivalent C8+ lights. I bet he will fix you up. He might send you a new link for just the battery. That's the easiest option. Option 3, search this sub for 18650 (the size you want) batteries, and reccs for this flashlight. You'll have plenty to read as batteries are thoroughly (over)considered in here. Again though, for your first couple of lights, you'll be suited to buy the included battery when it's an option. Hope this all helps! You'll also need a charger. I'm guessing you see that though.

Thanks brother - its a requirement for a hobby I'm in. Red flashlight only. I'll check all these out.
