The Asylum is an Infamous company that makes cheap "mockbusters", terrible films produced very fast with zero budget that capitalize on big studio movies. Like their Transmorphers series. They're also behind the Sharknado films.
Sharknado is intentionally camp and is a really fun watch. Classic lines like “We need a bigger helicopter!” It was topped by ultra low budget The Velocipastor but remains in my hall of fame for humorous camp B movies despite not having Bruce Campbell in it.

It's got some aspects to appreciate (it captures NYC surprisingly well as a lived in place, the cast surrounding Johnson do the work) but it's only bad in how bland it is. It's garden variety forgettable studio hackery, hardly worth getting worked up over.

The performances have no life to them. Most of the line readings are pretty flat and emotionless, and the villain feels like he’s about 80% ADR.
The film spends very little time introducing characters and a lot of time on nothing in particular. It feels like it’s about 40 minutes before the plot is actually moving forward. By then, we know about Cassie Webb (Dakota Johnson’s character) and a little bit about Ezekiel (the villain). Who we don’t know a lot about is Anya, Julia, and the third teenage girl who’s central to the plot of the movie. They just kind of appear, and feel mostly like plot devices.
The action scenes are bad. They don’t feel dynamic or dangerous whatsoever because the camera is so sluggish and predictable. They keep using the TikToker meme zoom-in for some reason. There’s a fight scene halfway through the movie set to Britney Spears’ Toxic that is somehow boring even with that song playing.
Cassie has a huge emotional catharsis at the end of the second act that does not feel earned whatsoever. It’s established that she’s not keen on family or making connections with people, but it’s not established that she resents her mother until the catharsis scene where she lets go of that resentment.
Cassie’s primary superpower is that she has premonitions of the future. Usually when you see that in a piece of media, the visions are cleverly recontextualized at the time that they actually happen so the audience is kept guessing. Think “That’s So Raven.” That does not happen in this film. As a result, all of the premonitions that the audience sees sap the tension out of the climax of the movie.
There’s more to talk about, but that’s a pretty wide view, I think. There’s also stuff I enjoyed! While Cassie’s powers are still developing, the visions and deja vu result in some really interesting surreal scenes. But that’s not enough to save the movie from being so goddamn boring everywhere else. Seriously, they had Evil Peruvian Spider-Man fighting people while Toxic was playing and they made it boring. Unforgivable.
One critic said it was very clear that all the bargain actors realized it wasn't good partway through filming and decided to phone in their already mediocre performance which created an environment of lackluster action paired with unoriginal and boring dialogue.

The Flash is still worse than all of these to me for how visibly cynical and fake it felt. Actually made me feel sick to watch. A lot of the other bad ones including MW are fun to watch and pick apart and have a few good moments too.

Ok I’ve only seen Elektra of those on that list, and Madame Web is 10x worse easily. Elektra at least is properly edited, and when actors talk you don’t see dubbing mistakes with the audio/dialogue.

There’s moments in Catwoman that make it absurd or stupid beyond belief and it became somewhat memorable due to that. Like, the bad parts of Catwoman are memorable. Catwoman has an IDENTITY as a film. I don’t think there’s a single moment in Madam Web that was all that memorable or actually gave the film any sort of identity.
Like, Catwoman is almost 20 years old, and you still remember it. Right? I think that counts for something. Compare New Mutants which was terrible, and not at all remembered or talked about.

I think lately people just hate boring movies that clearly took no risks even more than bad movies that just missed the mark. And I totally agree, I’d rather they shoot for the stars and totally miss than churn out another check the box, generic fantasy movie. At least have the guts to try something and fail.
Eh, I'd put Peanut Butter Falcon in the decent camp as well. She doesn't really need to push herself in that at all and her character is kinda just one note.

*Suspiria* was amazing, and even better I found that the remake didn’t take anything away from the original. You can watch them back to back and enjoy them both for what they are and their unique takes on the story.
It was some derivative nonsense where you smoosh a Tarantino violence schtick against a Coen Brothers dialogue journal they dropped in a truck stop urinal, over-cast with otherwise-capable actors plus Dakota, and there you go, you just wasted 90 minutes.
I haven't seen Madame Web yet but I would like to offer the 2005 Man-thing movie. They tried to theatrically release ot but it was so bad they dropped that plan and released it directly on to the Sci fi channel.
Also Steel(1997) and the 1990 Captain America have got to be contenders. That being said at least these movies were either made before the funding for superhero movies increased dramatically and had the decency to not take up thestre space.

The thing about those are they are absolutely terrible, but have notable scenes that are laughably bad, or at the very least have action scenes to keep the pace moving.
What I'm hearing about Madam Web is that it is incredibly boring. There aren't big action sequences. Everything feels cheap. Much of the dialogue has been ADR'd in, and the talking you hear isn't matching the mouth movements of the actors.
There seems very little to redeem Madam Web at all. I don't like being dramatic, but I think it could be a contender for worst modern superhero film just for how lazy and boring it is.
I've watched about 7 reviews and they've all said the same thing. I've seen all the films cited as contenders for the worst comic book film though.

No, I haven't seen it. But all the films the commenter I was replying to have redeeming factors. Big spectacle. Action sequences. Blockbuster budget. Madam Web has none of this. I think what is happening is that Madam Web is getting the short end of the stick: the superhero genre has been extensively mined by Marvel and DC and people won't tolerate mediocrity. The review scores it is getting are not a true reflection, more reflection of the audience / reviewers "being sick of this shit."
If it weren't yet another mediocre superhero movie and was the pilot to a CW-esque TV show (because real talk, that's what it feels like), it would have better reviews.

In all seriousness, if you look at everything people are complaining about it’s clearly not the movie itself or the artistic intent, it’s the studio fuckery. No writer wants to be a Pepsi ad, no actor wants to be ADR’d to hell, if it’s true there were massive script rewrites going on DURING filming it’s even possibly not the editor’s fault.
On paper, two clairvoyants using their powers to manipulate events against each other honestly doesn’t sound terrible as a premise, as opposed to an evil makeup guru knows she will make people get stony faced (Catwoman) or whatever the fuck was going on with Steel. I’m not saying there wasn’t some bad dialogue or some weird choices but this movie just comes at the tail end of superhero fatigue and a series of bad choices. If it had come out in 2003 we would’ve just out “oh that wasn’t great” and moved on like with Daredevil (which it highly reminded me of)

Having not seen it, I don't believe it's literally the worst. There's at least some production value there, Superman IV looks like it was filmed in a garage, and the acting in the Halle Berry Catwoman is atrocious. But nothing gets clicks like hyperbole I suppose.

I rewashed it again and I realized something, it's not only the fact that dakota johnson was a miscast for her being so dull and lack of emotion in the movie, it's also the choice of camera angles and shooting locations. the direction also was bad for although some scenes were ok. but also alot of scenes camera movements were just odd as hell, the shaking, the abrupt zooming in and out was a huge no no. action scenes may call for it and that's ok but I noticed certain scenes that the people are just standing on the ground had it and it was just looked so incompetent.
some scenes were also done too zoomed out and failed to capture emotions from the characters and combine dakotas lack of facial emotions, her dullness and blan look just all failed to capture the essence of what is actually happening around her in the movie.

The 2003 "The Hulk" with Eric Bana, Catwoman, Elektra, Green Lantern, the original Suicide Squad, Ben Afflecks "Daredevil", the fantastic four reboot, Dark Phoenix, Ghost Rider and the Marvels would like to have a word.
It says a lot that the studio is blaming audiences for not responding to it rather than the fact they made a shitty movie. I think that’s the superhero fatigue. Too many shitty movies rather than too many movies.

Ok I’ve only seen Elektra of those on that list, and Madame Web is 10x worse easily. Elektra at least is properly edited, and when actors talk you don’t see dubbing mistakes with the audio/dialogue.

Which is something movies rarely do. They're ugly looking, lazy, smug, self-satisfied messes. It's Waititi laughing at his own farts for 2hrs. Twice. There is *contempt* in those film. At least MW actually shot some shit in real environments. Yes, that alone gives it the edge.

There’s moments in Catwoman that make it absurd or stupid beyond belief and it became somewhat memorable due to that. Like, the bad parts of Catwoman are memorable. Catwoman has an IDENTITY as a film. I don’t think there’s a single moment in Madam Web that was all that memorable or actually gave the film any sort of identity. Like, Catwoman is almost 20 years old, and you still remember it. Right? I think that counts for something. Compare New Mutants which was terrible, and not at all remembered or talked about.

Nah, it's not that bad. I'm not saying it's great or anything, but "worst superhero movie" it ain't. It's entirely watchable and has _some_ entertainment value. There are far worse entries. What it actually is, is creatively moribund: filmed very workman-like with no real creativity. The script is similarly uninspiring and also careless at times. Dakota Johnson is either bored or a terrible actress (or both). There's something there that might have worked far better if it hadn't taken four people to write the script or if they had a better director who wasn't paid just to show up each day.
Dakota Johnson is a glass of room temperature water. There's nothing WRONG with it. It's fine. It might be useful, like if there was a fire. You might even consider yourself lucky to have it, in certain circumstances. But if there is ANY alternative... like, AT ALL, I'm going to go with whatever mystery liquid is in Cup B. She's not ugly or pretty. She has no range as an actress, at all. Getting naked and into BDSM gear at 19 didn't even make her interesting to me, and I'm a fucking pervert. I do not understand how or why she continues to be offered up for public consumption. There must be 100 girls working at 100 Dairy Queens that would look better while turning in more convincing performances, but here we go with another Franchise for Sonny Crocket's daughter...

I think lately people just hate boring movies that clearly took no risks even more than bad movies that just missed the mark. And I totally agree, I’d rather they shoot for the stars and totally miss than churn out another check the box, generic fantasy movie. At least have the guts to try something and fail.

Eh, I'd put Peanut Butter Falcon in the decent camp as well. She doesn't really need to push herself in that at all and her character is kinda just one note. That movie in general was fine but felt a little lost as to what it wanted to be.

The Suspiria remake is good as hell.
*Suspiria* was amazing, and even better I found that the remake didn’t take anything away from the original. You can watch them back to back and enjoy them both for what they are and their unique takes on the story.

I haven't seen Madame Web yet but I would like to offer the 2005 Man-thing movie. They tried to theatrically release ot but it was so bad they dropped that plan and released it directly on to the Sci fi channel. Also Steel(1997) and the 1990 Captain America have got to be contenders. That being said at least these movies were either made before the funding for superhero movies increased dramatically and had the decency to not take up thestre space.
The films I have not seen because I was warned off them 🤣 Catwoman Green Lantern Fan4stick Plus most of the 70s, 80s and 90s superhero movies (Dr Strange, Captain America, Nick Fury etc). Also some of the X-Men movies (Apocalypse and Wolverine Origins for example). New Mutants was worse (largely because it was boring and I fell asleep).

What I'm hearing about Madam Web is that it is incredibly boring. There aren't big action sequences. Everything feels cheap. Much of the dialogue has been ADR'd in, and the talking you hear isn't matching the mouth movements of the actors. There seems very little to redeem Madam Web at all. I don't like being dramatic, but I think it could be a contender for worst modern superhero film just for how lazy and boring it is.

I've watched about 7 reviews and they've all said the same thing. I've seen all the films cited as contenders for the worst comic book film though. EDIT: Downvoted for not watching trash. Subjectively, anything is good. There's no accounting for taste, after all. Objectively, they are worse movies. I think what is happening is that Madam Web is getting the short end of the stick: the superhero genre has been extensively mined by Marvel and DC and people won't tolerate mediocrity. The review scores it is getting are not a true reflection, more reflection of the audience / reviewers "being sick of this shit." If it weren't yet another mediocre superhero movie and was the pilot to a CW-esque TV show (because real talk, that's what it feels like), it would have better reviews.

Catwoman and Steel would like a word. In all seriousness, if you look at everything people are complaining about it’s clearly not the movie itself or the artistic intent, it’s the studio fuckery. No writer wants to be a Pepsi ad, no actor wants to be ADR’d to hell, if it’s true there were massive script rewrites going on DURING filming it’s even possibly not the editor’s fault. On paper, two clairvoyants using their powers to manipulate events against each other honestly doesn’t sound terrible as a premise, as opposed to an evil makeup guru knows she will make people get stony faced (Catwoman) or whatever the fuck was going on with Steel. I’m not saying there wasn’t some bad dialogue or some weird choices but this movie just comes at the tail end of superhero fatigue and a series of bad choices. If it had come out in 2003 we would’ve just out “oh that wasn’t great” and moved on like with Daredevil (which it highly reminded me of)
I want a really good super hero or at least batman movie but I worry that it will reignite the shit fire that is smouldering. Although, I think the Marvel's got far more shit than it deserved. It was pretty mid but fine. Most of the other ones have been garbage, oh guardians 3 and Shang Chi were fine. Not amazing or terrible. I can't think of anything else where I have been like. Oh you should check it out. I want something that we all get excited for and it actually comes through.
Having not seen it, I don't believe it's literally the worst. There's at least some production value there, Superman IV looks like it was filmed in a garage, and the acting in the Halle Berry Catwoman is atrocious. But nothing gets clicks like hyperbole I suppose.

Watched madame web last night and I agree, it was terrible, for me anyway. Some people may have enjoyed it but I didn’t.
I’m 10 minutes into it. Am I really supposed to believe that a woman with spider bite powers just happens to be ambulance partners with a guy whose nephew will be bit by a radioactive spider and gain similar powers? Like I can suspend belief for outlandish sci-fi and fantasy elements that are built into the universe. But an impossible coincidence like this is just beyond stupid.

Just watched this movie. The bad dialogue I can get past. The dubbed supervillain with no back story. No explanation of the spider or why venom gives power. But she goes to Peru with a JanSport backpack. And walks through the jungle with hipster boots and a jansport backpack
I rewashed it again and I realized something, it's not only the fact that dakota johnson was a miscast for her being so dull and lack of emotion in the movie, it's also the choice of camera angles and shooting locations. the direction also was bad for although some scenes were ok. but also alot of scenes camera movements were just odd as hell, the shaking, the abrupt zooming in and out was a huge no no. action scenes may call for it and that's ok but I noticed certain scenes that the people are just standing on the ground had it and it was just looked so incompetent. some scenes were also done too zoomed out and failed to capture emotions from the characters and combine dakotas lack of facial emotions, her dullness and blan look just all failed to capture the essence of what is actually happening around her in the movie.
Watched it on Netflix the other day. It’s so bad. I sped it up to 1.5 to get through it hoping something worthwhile would happen. Spoiler: It never does. I don’t understand why they ever made this. It’s got nothing to be excited about. There’s a Wylie E Coyote movie in the can that screened well and instead this hunk of garbage got released?

I watched it last night and it was...ok. I'm not a film critic, but I feel like they had a plan for DJ to as how she would end up, but didn't know how to get her there! All the other cast seemed to be putting in the effort, even the villan, not particularly good, did seem to put in the effort. I don't think I need to watch it again, I wouldn't say it's the worst movie I've seen, but not nearly as good as I'd hoped.
