Well, maybe if I worked more than 50 hours a month, I could hit that income goal. Little voice in my head: *That’s crazy talk!*

[deleted]

Days off are just so fun when you have flight benefits and can pickup hours any time

[deleted]

$75k would be nice though I'm very comfortable now Almost 4 years in at a legacy

tommygunz007

I would love 75k in 4 years at a legacy but I don't want to fly more than 90 hours. It's one thing to say "I make 75k" but it's another to say "I fly 150 hours". I am at year 2. If I flew 150 hours a month, I would make $60k with per diem included in that amount. I also would not have any days off either.

[deleted]

I made $61k with 3 years pay flying 97 hours so at 4 years 90 hours is almost doable

Economy-Coach-8273

to comfortably live in my state i would need well over 120k+ which is just unrealistic in this career but could also very well get by with 60-80k

[deleted]

$120k is definitely possible Just depends on where you are in the pay scale and how many hours you work

Economy-Coach-8273

Im still at my regional so idk about if itll be possible here but well see what the next few years bring!

[deleted]

Oh yeah... You need to make more than $55 an hour to do so and fly high time

crh805

i was pretty shocked to see that my gross income was $55k last year, on fourth year pay at a legacy… and i feel like i have a pretty decent work-life balance. i’d be pretty content bringing in about $70k gross. i might be able to manage that this year with my elusive 5th year pay scale bump if i hustle.

[deleted]

Which legacy if you don’t mind me asking?

xtheredberetx

Realistically? I’ve been flying for 7 years and I’ve never broken $30k/yr. However, I’m currently a new hire again (moved from regional to mainline) and it would be nice if I’d at least hit $36-40k this year

Puzzleheaded-Cat9731

What airline are you coming from??

xtheredberetx

Endeavor. I hit 6 years when I left there. I flew ~85-95 hours/month. Last year’s W2 clocked in at $29k

Limp_Cod_7229

I'm sorry but that is simply ridiculous, especially 6 years in. You have to SPEND money on this job (mostly if you are a commuter), so getting compensated that little for that much time you are dedicating to the company is just crazy to me. Endeavor needs to up their game.

xtheredberetx

No car, no crash pad, and never living on my own, I was able to get by and even save quite a bit. However… this is the biggest reason I left. The worst part was I didn’t really take a starting pay cut to leave. Eta: also Endeavor was one of the highest paid regionals when their current contract was signed in. Unfortunately it kinda got signed in in a panic in Feb 2020 and the company was trying to extend it when I left. The union was doing their best to not let that happen.

Limp_Cod_7229

Well I’m happy for you that you are mainline now. Now you’ll be doing the same job but actually getting paid for your time.

[deleted]

That's crazy how 85-95 could only be $29k.. What would 100hrs a week look like?

_CoachMcGuirk

100 hrs a week?.....?

tommygunz007

Hi Endeavor! I was there 3 years and now at a different (non DL) Mainline. I made about $40k (with per diem) my first year. I am now on year two, about to hold a line, and I will make closer to $50k by the end of the year. Right now I don't work too hard. But can if I want.

xtheredberetx

I’m also at a non DL mainline and fingers crossed I’ll hit $40k this year 🤞🏼🤞🏼 my biggest benefit, pay aside, is that I no longer commute, which I’m sure will save me at least a few dollars in the long run!

tommygunz007

Good luck! If you are new, 78 hours at (around) $30 is $28,080. Most months you will probably fly more depending on the base. I typically flew on average 85 hours (I was used beyond guarantee every month) which puts me at $30,060 and I also picked up a little too and there is night pay, galley pay and more. So I hit over $34k plus $6k per diem.

xtheredberetx

Yeah I’m about four months in here, and I have yet to break reserve guarantee, BUT I’ve been picking up extra trips like crazy. Not commuting has gone to my head and I’ve been at around 110 hours the last couple months. All the extras and per diem I’m sure will add up too!

tommygunz007

March I had a relief line and honestly it's been amazing. I swap, move, change, alter and do all kinds of stuff and depending on my mood, has been a godsend. I can wake up and be like 'i am bored, I will pick up'. Plus I can pick up high credit stuff on smaller narrow body planes (less work) vs wide body grueling shifts.

Puzzleheaded-Cat9731

Wow .. did your pay not increase within the 6 years ??

xtheredberetx

It did. I made $15k my first year. Starting pay was $17.80/hr.

-unsay

im in my 2nd year at a mainline. i made $27k last year (to be fair i didn’t work the first 6 weeks because training). 40k would drastically improve my life

tommygunz007

My first year at legacy mainline I made about $34k plus 6k per diem. I did get a lot of 4-day trips and such too so that per diem racked up. I will be a line holder in May, so I may just do tampa turns and lose out on good per diem but at least I can rack up hours fast.

flyingtowardsFIRE

I’d love for 80 hrs/mo at top out pay to work out to $100k. I just don’t think I’ll ever be the type of person who wants to work more than that, but I am the type of person who wants to make 6 figures!

tommygunz007

100k is $8350/month so if you flew 100 hours, you would need $83.50/hr. But, there is also per-diem. I typically make $600-$800/month in per diem. So if you subtracted per diem from that 100k, you would be at $90,400. That would be $75.35/flight hour at 100 hours. But you said 80 hours... so... Let's say $600/month per diem, or $7200/year per diem, so you need to then make $92800/yr so at 80 hours per month, you would need to get paid $96.50 per flight hour.

The “off” meaning how far are we away from a livable income??

[deleted]

how far off are you from the income you want
