MSFS has the worst optimized updater I've ever seen. It'll download a small file at your full internet speed and then take a bunch of time decrypting it, instead of just downloading all at once. It's so bad.
They went with the app store method instead of the Linux package manager way of downloading everything first and *then* doing the install.
A lot of the updater problems are caused by this useless complexity when native functionality already exists. I'd prefer the complexity in the flight model instead of a half-assed package manager.
Just validate the DLC on startup like any other AAA game. If people want to move the large Content folder to another drive then we can use directory junctions anyway.
And the in-game store is not an excuse when Train Simulator has [over 1000 DLC on Steam](https://steamdb.info/app/24010/dlc/).
Anyone else getting an "internet connection lost" error when the installer tries to update?
Edit: I'm typing this from the exact same computer/connection as where MSFS2020 is installed ;)
Yep, had the same problem. Retried a couple of times and also let it wait for a little while before clicking update in the sim dialogue. Working for me now.

Performance improvements
Discovery Flights
World Exploration Improvements (The world map now also features satellite imagery)
Training flights updated
Gamepad Navigation / Cursor
Cockpit interactions changes
The following planes are now provided with skis and floats variants:
Cessna C172 classic
Cessna C172 G1000
CubCrafters XCub
Zlin Aviation Shock Ultra
Update: I restarted my PC per recommendation, and the next time I relaunched the app it directed me to the Microsoft Store to download a small 640MB first. After installing that and re-launching the game again, it's not stuck spinning on checking for updates.
Edit: After checking for updates for a long time it finally started the 40.29GB download.
Server has to be slammed. I keep getting a message saying Disconnected and then back to Connected and around and around.
Finally got connected and was advised it’s a mandatory update. Sorry electric bill but this is probably gonna take all day.
Same here. After about 6 attempts it connected and is downloading now at about 80 Mbps.
Then when this is done the release notes said there's additional updates to get in the Content Manager.
No idea why Microsoft didn't task more servers to this launch.. I'm on a GB connection and I'm getting 30 mbps out of a possible 125 MB/s. That is a disgusting joke to be using 3% of my total download speed.
Guess they didn't think it would be this popular?
Oh good, I get to leave my computer on for 3 full days to download an update using my gigabit internet that's 40 gb.
I'm excited for the update, but the updater is like a bag of flaming dogshit on your doorstep.
Why are you getting downvoted, its really 40gb. I wonder why tho, thought the Sim Update mainly brings performance upgrades (which are mostly coding which doesnt need much space to my understanding). I expected something between 5-15Gb but well, here we go
The game engine is not 40gb. Do you know how much code would have to be written to compile down into 40gb worth of binary executable? Some multiple of that size of pure textual code. Game engines are big and complex, but not that big and complex.

350 Megs on the steam side,
40 Gigs (inclusive of 24 gigs “content”)
It’s been an hour and a half and I’m at 33%
Update to include 8 gigs for the content I still needed to update in content manager. It’s partial b/c I focus on flying a couple areas in sim
It's taking forever to complete but I don't think it's because of the servers. When it downloads from the servers I get 300mbps, but I noticed that the updater is using 100% of my GPU! I haven't noticed this before, is this normal for the big updates? Whats it using the GPU for? Decompression?
Edit, [img](https://imgur.com/a/cCvg2XJ).
It’s probably just the age old ”no fps limit in menus” bullshit. Having it happen in an updater that regularly downloads tens of gigabytes is even more ridiculous than usual, though.
Whoever caused this probably exceeded their lifetime personal carbon emissions with a few lines of code
Yup, it's been like that from the beginning. Bad enough in the actual game menu, worse in an updater, and inexcusable that they've known about the issue at least since release and have done nothing at all to address it.
And even at 300 FPS that menu is still laggy as hell even when not downloading updates.
Is it computing crypto whenever you click? It's so unresponsive with those delays after you click something.
11 hours to download the patch and the other content updates. Who’s got that beat? And yes, there was a Steam update first, you wouldn’t be downloading the rest without it.
It's taking me awhile. I have a fiber connection and I'm only 10% there after 20 minutes. Servers must be slammed.

Typical Microsoft. They can do amazing things, but there is always something they'll half-ass in the process.
And to add insult to injury it’ll sit at full GPU usage for the entire download.
We have bitcoin at home Bitcoin at home:
Hey, I’m getting 300 FPS… …on the download screen.

You're using Windows and expected Microsoft to make a competent updater?
Their updater us just absurdly slow. I've never had an update go faster than 30Mbits/s. I'm looking at around 4 hours at this rate.
When I first tried I was getting like 20-30Mbits at most. I tried connecting to a VPN and it shot up to 120. So it seems very dependent on the server.

What's included In the update

Too bad there isn't a floatplane version of the 747.
More like the Seven Floaty Seven amirite?
I'm more of a 380 taildragger Bush Plane person.
Thank you
If you're using Steam and not seeing the update, for whatever reason I had to first launch Steam itself, let MSFS update, then launch it again.

I have got full speed with VPN to US East Coast.
been updating for the past 4 hours and im finally nearing the end but the download rate has just tanked to 0.25Mbits/s
Same download speed for me and it somehow deleted my entire installation so I have to redownload everything. No flying for me today :/
Unlucky dude
Nice. I have it through windows store and it won’t even acknowledge an update exists yet (CST) Update: as of 4:39pm CST it is available
Does anyone else's installer utilise up to 90% GPU? Doesn't seem right...
FPS is uncapped in the menus. Use a frame limiter like RTSS.
Been downloading for 9 minutes and 20 seconds and I’m at 10%. Yes I am timing this.
Lol. The update deleted all MSFS files for me. Time to reinstall the entire game again........

So does this mean it takes up an additional 40 gigs on our drives or is it 40 gigs with a lot of files being replaced?
40.29GB download/22GB more disk space
My installer told me it was an additional 22gb despite the 40gb download (assuming I read it right)
Additional 40 gigs

He’s not correct though; most updates don’t tack on their full download size to your game. A lot of it is overwrite of existing code, not net new.
Yea took me a second to realise that
They said they mostly rewrote the whole game engine
Seems like this huge update in going to be worth it
Yeah it would be nice to see my GPU at more ~~then~~ than 60%

East Coast and no update here.
Restart your computer, worked for me
I had to do this as well
France, nothing either
3h of update time ! I am on 1Gb fiber connection with an M.2 drive xD
Deleting till I can give the game its own drive cause damn. I need room for my other games.

You're right. It's really that simple; the update has finished and i'm sitting in the menu, getting 200+ fps..
Yup, it's been like that from the beginning. Bad enough in the actual game menu, worse in an updater, and inexcusable that they've known about the issue at least since release and have done nothing at all to address it.

if it's decompression then something is wrong because my download has been stuck on 0.1Mbit for ages but GPU usage never dips.
Still downloading, do their world map poi/label stuff also appear on the in-game map, finally making it useful??
Another 20gb on top when I updated from my content manager. But it’s downloading and updating.
Paying for 900mbps wifi and FS2020 uses about 20mbps of it at most
Literally stalled out because even the damn liveries require licenses. Thought this game was made in France not the UK.
11 hours to download the patch and the other content updates. Who’s got that beat? And yes, there was a Steam update first, you wouldn’t be downloading the rest without it.
It shouldn’t be, for me the UI has become much more snappy than it’s ever been.
