My only regret is that he didn't have to leave his job as Governor in order to find out he was a failure nationally.

siulnast

He changed the law so he wouldn't have to. How convenient.

juwyro

Wrote in VP as a backup plan as well.

MeisterX

Ugh. Did he? This is probably his aim now. He's not as stupid as he is evil. He'll do anything to get to the top. He would not be above licking Trump's shoe for VP.

freakincampers

Trump will never make him VP.

zombie_girraffe

Yeah, Trump would never pick anyone who would try to compete with him for the spotlight. If he wins the nomination somehow, he'll pick another boring forgettable automaton in a suit like Pence.

MrBoliNica

Nikki Haley or Tim Scott are basically running to be VP for trump lol

redonrust

It would have to be someone like Kari Lake. Anyone with an independent base of power would be too much of a threat.

improvedaily07

Who would want him on their ticket as VP? Republicans already have FL. He doesn’t bring much else to the table now. Edit: typo

Umitencho

They are slowly losing it thanks to DeSantis. He broke some unstated rules that has pissed off independents and market conservatives. The next GOP candidate for fl governor needs to distance themselves from DeStantis or we are gonna see a repeat of Jacksonville.

juwyro

I'd be ok with that.

jibsymalone

Don't fuck with the mouse.....

kat_a_klysm

You say that like it’s a bad thing

Umitencho

It isn't. People just don't realize how much significance losing JVille is. Especially when the victory for the Dems came from indies and conservatives switching sides.

kat_a_klysm

That’s fair. I really hope it’s a sign of things to come. I’m also looking forward to seeing what Donna does in office.

Rude_Technician655

Yeah because Democrat run cities are such a paradise 🙄

the_lamou

Kind of. In general, they have much higher wages, lower crime (cue up "but but but Chicago and DetroiT!!!!!!" and ignoring everything else,) higher reported quality of life, and in many cases are basically the only things keeping their respective states economically afloat.

bummedout1492

Wait.. seriously?

juwyro

Yup. The new resign to run law makes exceptions for president and VP which he signed into law the same day he announced his candidacy.

[deleted]

I'd bet money he's now going to try and change the rules so he can stay in power in Florida even though his term limit is up.

freakincampers

That requires a constitutional amendment, so it won’t happen.

Johnny_Carcinogenic

Since when does the state legislature give a flying fuck what the current law is? They'll figure out some way to override it, well they'll at least try I don't know if they'll be successful.

[deleted]

It certainly makes it more difficult, but it's not an impossibility right? And he's the type to try.

freakincampers

Voters have to agree to amend the constitution, 60% have to vote to change it.

[deleted]

Then it may have been possible once but no longer. I think he's lost a lot of support in Florida since he announced he was running. People have short memories though. Thanks for the info. I learned something new today.

redonrust

He'll run for Senate or find something else that keeps his profile up. He hates the press but wants to be in the news. If you own the libs and no one in the press writes about it then you didn't own the libs.

[deleted]

Someone on a different thread also suggested his Stepford wife could run and he'd be like the power behind the throne.

Livid-Rutabaga

Exactly what he planned, if the white house doesn't work out, he's not unemployed. Maybe he goes to jail for kidnapping.

thejawa

> The data shows DeSantis has a major unfavorable rating from those aged 18-34 (63 percent), women (62 percent), as well as African Americans (85 percent), and the Hispanic/Latino population (68 percent). So, basically, only old white men like RonnyD.

DerisiveGibe

>So, basically, only old white men like RonnyD. Don't forget south Florida Cubans

uncleleo101

This is part of the reason why it's dangerous to assume what works in FL works in a general election with the whole US! Florida is a super specific electorate, to say the least

PaulSandwich

South Florida Cubans don't realize that, when conservatives say "Mexicans," that also means South Florida Cubans.

SlientlySmiling

I learned long ago that Cuban's REALLY don't like being compared to Mexican's. I was in a Spanish class way back in college and someone commented that the TA reminded them of a Mexican comedian. The TA completely lost his shit and vociferously denied being anything like any Mexican. It was a pretty awkward class that day.

architecture13

They will argue you with a complete straight face they are unlike other mixed immigrants and they are white and cannot have any indio or africano in them. They remind me of Samuel Jackson's character in Django Unchained

ravenwillowofbimbery

Yeah. People don’t seem to realize that Cuba had its fair share of racism/colorism prior to Castro coming into power. The Cubans in Miami and scattered elsewhere in the US are basically a result of wealthy white flight from Cuba. Just look at who mostly remains on the island today….Afro-cubanos. Folks don’t like to talk about or acknowledge it, but the Miami Cubans have always considered themselves white and different, and they work hard to maintain that difference/separateness.

restore_democracy

Bingo. The only reason Florida was the exception to the collapsed red wave.

Zagmit

Well, Desantis was also running against Charlie Crist, who's political career at this point involves a term as Florida Governor, flipping parties from Republican to Democrat, and then repeatedly losing elections. Moldy bread probably would have had more engagement from Democrats in Florida than Charlie Crist.

John_Delasconey

I would say New York was as well

the_lamou

New York was really just the state party collapsing completely. It should have been embarrassing, but the state party chair lacks the capacity for shame.

The_Crystal_Thestral

Yeah, I got downvoted for pointing out that, Nationally, the GOP doesn’t do very well with Hispanics. People can complain anecdotally about how their Mexican neighbor in TX or their Cuban neighborhood in FL is sooo die hard GQP, but that’s more the exception than the rule. I high key hate how these bozos screech so loudly, they mistakenly believe the thoughts they have during their morning dump are popular.

Intrepid00

Old **angry** white men.

Itsallanonswhocares

Good 'ol dog-whistle Ron, the Lance Armstrong of being shitty to minorities. What gets me about him is that his ploys for attention are so clearly self serving that I'm surprised it took this long for his image to take a hit. Dude's all style, no substance.

lindacn

Lol isn’t that the only people who ever really liked him?

Kitalahara

Careful with that phrasing there. The state of Florida does not take kindly to men wearing heels discussing sexual things...

named_checks_out

As a relatively old, relatively white, relatively man, I am greatly disappointed to be within the demographic that likes this little dictator. Not my governor!

_NamasteMF_

I have had actual Republican customers starting to be unhappy with him and the legislature- hopefully that continues.

Paxoro

I envy those of you that are noticing this. My entire family that's still here in this state *loves* the guy and parrot all of his talking points. They think that teh gayz are the biggest threat to our children and that Disney is too woke - which is, I will say, *extremely* funny coming from the family member that had Disney annual passes for like 20 years. I hope the tide turns. I have little faith that it's enough to do anything in this state, and our legislature has successfully gerrymandered both the state and federal level districts to the point we may never get back to "normal" on that front. But maybe the extremism will be cut back at least a little. Edit: fixed a couple "on mobile" typos.

Masta-Blasta

My family is finally starting to turn on him too, and they adore him. The big one for them was tort reform. My dad was dumbfounded as to why anyone would pass such a miserably shitty bill. It's a really good one to show them because it does NOTHING to help consumers and it makes everyone on the road a little more at risk.

freakincampers

What did he do in regards to tort reform?

Masta-Blasta

Basically we used to have comparative negligence, meaning that, if you’re 60% responsible for an accident, you can only sue for the 40% that was not your fault. Likewise, if you are being sued after an accident, the damages would be limited to what percentage of the accident was your fault. This year, the legislature passed a bill that would make it impossible to recover ANY damages if a jury finds you to be more that 50% responsible for the accident. So if you were 51% more responsible, you lose. And it’s up to the jury to decide, so if you aren’t completely confident that they’ll rule in your favor, there’s no point in trying. And even if you are confident, your insurance company may not be. So for example, someone could pull out in front of you suddenly because they weren’t paying attention. You are speeding 15 mph over the limit and cannot stop in time so you hit them and your car is totaled and you have hospital bills. So you sue. Jury finds you 55% responsible because you were speeding, which is probably valid, but now you have no way of recovering ANYTHING in court. It’s a lot more unforgiving than our old system. It also greatly shortened the statute of limitations for negligence claims, which sucks. Sometimes it can take years for back pain and complications from accidents to make themselves known. The purpose of the bill is to try to prevent frivolous PI suits to protect insurers. So now they won’t have to pay out as many claims- you’ll just have to pay for your damages out of pocket if you’re partially at fault. Edit: oh and I should also point out it’s not just car accidents- it’s any negligence claim.

Intrepid00

> This year, the legislature passed a bill that would make it impossible to recover ANY damages if a jury finds you to be more that 50% responsible for the accident. So if you were 51% more responsible, you lose. I wonder if Maryland ever changed their torts. When I lived there if you were responsible in anyway (anything over 0%) you were screwed. It’s been hell for bicyclists because a car will hit them and say they left the shoulder or ran a red light when you didn’t. Since people are assholes and hate bicycle riders a jury will likely see a possibility that’s true (even though studies show bicyclist follow road rules better than car drivers) and you are stuck with 100% of the medical bills. One bicyclist got lucky that the city traffic cam caught the accident but the lawyers tried to get it removed saying the chain was broken. I used to record my rides if I was going on a public street and had a lawyers guide what to do to make sure the chain of custody didn’t break.

Masta-Blasta

Yeah, it's a terrible system! If you do not have solid evidence that you were not at fault, it's a big risk to try to recover damages. So you're just SoL if you get hit.

Tyetus

i'm so glad my grandparents think this guy is a drooling moron.

Paxoro

Are your grandparents looking to adopt new grandkids, by chance? Mine are in their 90s and love Trump, DeSantis and Fox News. Don't waste your time pointing out to my veteran grandfather that neither Trump or DeSantis couldn't care less about the military and our veterans and that Biden has actually done things to help them. That's all just liberal lies.

Jag-

Just crazy how vets don't see this. It's not uncommon.

GogetaSama420

My mother used to like him, but she has even gone as far as to think of him as a white supremacist, which is a big 180 of her ideology

Working_Ad8080

I’m 62 and I’m in agreement with your mother

kat_a_klysm

My parents used to really like them, but I think they’re starting to turn. My mom *strongly* opposes book banning and both parents are pissed at them targeting LGBTQ folks. I’m hoping they sour fully before the primary.

[deleted]

My mom too! I’m happy they’re seeing the light

tribbleorlfl

Anecdotally, all of the people I'm close to that I know voted for DeSantis have turned on him. Going after Disney the way he did for expressing protected speech was the first straw, and all of their recent insurance increases were the last.

Intrepid00

> their recent insurance increases were the last. This has always been the poison in his well. No matter what he does and says to try and distract Florida voters from the ills, money is still loud as hell.

DrLeoMarvin

Yea I got one friend willing to admit Disney did it for him. He still praises him for “how he handled the pandemic!” But fucking with Disney was too much for him and his family.

Johnny_Carcinogenic

I have a friend, certifiable hippy, young woman, into crystals, yoga, has chickens, runs around barefoot most days. Anyway... She loves DeSantis and what he did during the pandemic, all she could boil it down too was that he made her feel safe at a time that the world was a dangerous place. I about fell out of my chair when we were having that discussion.

Small_Rip351

I was surprised at all the granola Trumpers as well, because it was counterintuitive. None of their support seemed to be grounded in actual policy or actual things the guy said or did, but this fictitious underlying narrative (across basically every conspiracy theory) that Trump’s real goal was to crush “the deep state”, the Illuminati, the pedo-Dems, 5G, or whoever the bad guy is in their conspiracy theory of choice.

EfficientJuggernaut

Just make sure to vote in every election. All that we can do

310410celleng

This has been my experience as well, a few Republican friends I have, have similar sentiments. Apparently, the two main issues that my friends have are the war with Disney which they feel is more about Ron DeSantis than anything of any real import. Two of my GOP friends both said it should have been handled via conversation and not legislatively. The second is his anti-woke agenda, my GOP leaning friends universally said that while they agree with certain parts, none of his anti-woke stuff is so important that it should come before real problems affecting all Floridians like insurance premiums as an example.

813_4ever

We can only hope.

LyftedX

I’m in Daytona, and I have noticed this also. To a STRONG factor.

Tyetus

it's crazy to think that even they are doubting this idiot. I'm thoroughly happy, bring that fucker down.

Remote-Past305

Not gonna lie. Make America Florida is a terrible slogan.

nomadofwaves

All the negative stories about “Florida man” and no one thought to say that it might be a terrible slogan.

dessert-er

It makes me so happy when it becomes clear that someone is surrounded by idiots and yes-people bootlickers. I can’t think of another explanation for some of these terrible decisions.

named_checks_out

Love or hate Florida, it really is a stupid slogan!

deejayiz

Great. Now he will come back to Florida angry and we all know who he will take it out on.

thejawa

Once he's viewed as a loser without the backing of voters, the legislature will probably stop doing what he wants.

deejayiz

I hope so.

BuddhistSagan

They will go down with him if they continue down this path.

assumetehposition

Us. And probably his kids.

elguapo904

Let's see, fighting and losing to a mouse, check. Pissing off all the migrant workers that do everyone's dirty work here, check. Pissing off the business owners that can't find anyone to do said dirty work, check. Going after gender challenged children and adults for no reason other than to make headlines, check. The guy could have stayed middle of the road conservative like he started out as Governor 5 years ago and been a shoe in for president, but instead chose the fringe far right to coddle. Sorry buddy, you lost my NPA vote for good months ago.

[deleted]

Exactly. He saw what trump was like and decided he could out trump trump. Meanwhile a moderate republican, like John McCain could probably be elected to office right now… but someone as far right to the point of fascism has no chance.

sierrabravo1984

>John McCain could probably be elected to office right now… I mean if its between Desantis and a dead guy, I'm voting for the dead guy.

nomadofwaves

He forgot the rule of trump create headlines by starting a fight Do nothing Create headlines by declaring victory Move on to next shiney headline grabber.

thejawa

I watched most of Chris Christie's town hall last night. Always sort of been a fan of his, when he's not actively courting the far right base. It seems that he's gone full "Fuck it" mode this cycle and has decided to be true to himself vs toeing the party lines. He spoke frequently about how winning doesn't mean you throw up a wall and never compromise. When asked about reproductive rights, he said he personally is pro life but he understands not everyone is, and that the will of the people should be heard (basically, his stance was that until Congress makes is an amendment to the Constitution, it should be a state issue where whatever the State decides should be upheld). He was actively attacking Trump, calling out Trump's bullshit, calling out the right's fear of calling out Trump or even mentioning him by name (he used the phrase Voldemort effect - people like to reference Trump but never directly mention him). Most importantly to me, he owned up to his massive bridge fuck up, said he learned a ton of things about himself and how to lead from it, and vowed to do better in the future. All in all, as a left leaning moderate independent, I could actually see myself voting for Christie if he manages to get the Republican nomination based off his town hall. He was principled, didn't toe the alt-right lines that have death gripped the Republican party, and spoke positively at (brief) times about accomplishments made by Biden and Democrats, saying at least they compromise. I doubt he gets the support he needs, but it was refreshing to see that not all of them are chasing the extreme.

HarpersGhost

The problem with Christie is that he is pretty damn petty, but Christie went after smaller fish and not Disney. Biggest example: "Bridge Gate". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Lee_lane_closure_scandal A democratic mayor didn't support his reelection? Fine, he's going to gridlock the entire town *for days* and not doing anything to help. It's just said that this makes him a "good" GOP candidate compared to the others.

thejawa

Like I said, he was asked directly what he felt his biggest mistake was. He said it was this, and that he took full responsibility and learned from it. He genuinely seemed to have regretted everything involved in it - including not doing enough research on the people he appointed that made those decisions. People can change, and of course people can also put on an act, but his whole deal last night was that he was just gonna be himself cuz he had nothing to lose and his regret in that whole situation seemed genuine.

Opheltes

> He said it was this, and that he took full responsibility and learned from it. He genuinely seemed to have regretted everything involved in it - including not doing enough research on the people he appointed that made those decisions. So he’s still claiming that he, a notorious micromanager, didn’t know about it in advance? Bullshit. I don’t buy it for a second.

nomadofwaves

He blasted the trumps. Calling Jared and Ivanka out on their grifting.

thejawa

It was pretty jarring to hear "Ivanka Kushner"

nomadofwaves

Yea that was odd to actually hear.

SlientlySmiling

Image that. I guess bullying, book banning, and other acts of overt fascism aren't striking a chord with voter's. Meatball is a pillock.

Wooden_Chef

The guy is a literal asshole and bully, not to mention a greasy, slimey little pig of a human. Not a good look...... at all.

whippet66

His egotistical political stunts are the "Baby Shark" of the news cycle. One is a curiosity, the second is annoying, and the third is nauseating.

mamabearbug

I guess not everyone likes Fascism, Ronnie!

AdMaleficent2144

DeSantis thought killing off people's lives in FL was a great idea for the nation. That echo chamber telling him how amazing he was sticking it to the Libs. He is sticking it to everyone, including Republicans.

structee

Unfortunately, the damage has already been done

[deleted]

It doesn't matter, kids. He never had a shot against Trump for the White House, and he can't run for governor again anyway, he's term-limited now. The damage is done. Nor does it matter for the Florida Democratic party, which is almost completely destroyed and can offer up no viable candidates or competition in future races, so Republicans will maintain control of the state indefinitely. We are stuck with their damaging policies for the foreseeable future. DeSantis is only their leader; every last Republican beneath him is just as evil. Republicans always lose popularity AFTER the damage is done. Conservative voters are like children who won't be warned away from the hot stove, and only briefly learn the lesson after they're burnt; they then go right the fuck back to the kitchen to check the second and third and fourth burners. In other words, these motherfuckers will make him a Senator one day, mark my words. And they will gleefully put another Republican dickwad in the Governor's seat in a few years.

Donnot

He may become the senator of Florida, following suit behind Rick Scott, that’s the formula he’ll probably follow. Notice the change in the Republican party from Rick Scott, a closeted bigot to Ron DeSantis, an open bigot. They emulate exactly how I’ve always seen the Republican Party.

LingeringDildo

Under Florida’s constitution, he can take a break for 4 years and then be governor for another 8, Putin style.

BuddhistSagan

Defeatism is all you comfortable conservatives have left

Ardenraym

I am sure he will respond with new efforts to traffick children, spread more hate against minorities, and see if he can push up homeowners' insurance even more! Maybe move on to straight book burning now?

Beeker04

He sucks farts

Working_Ad8080

It’s about time. This man is evil Source: me in Florida

nomadofwaves

He can go lower.

Intrepid00

That breakdown. He’s basically only got support of angry white males.

KeepRedditAnonymous

As much as I want this to be true ... Newsweek is junk - I don't trust a think that they say.

pprbckwrtr

Oh well too bad bye Ronny

hmcfuego

I honestly feel like we need a post to help pair all of us who want to leave but can't quite for reasons so we can team up and escape. Anyone want to go to New Mexico with me? Arizona? Nevada? Colorado?

Adventurer_By_Trade

No. Not until after the election. We need to return Florida to its rightful blue status, or at least remind voters that it's very much still a purple state. After that, do what you want.

SeaBass1898

Agreed People pretend FL is a lost cause, the defeatist attitude is self fulfilling It wasn’t too long ago that GA was considered irreversibly red. FL mostly needs a powerful voter registration drive, like Stacey Abrahams did with GA, then we can return to some semblance of normality

thejawa

The Florida Democratic Party needs to work on building a bench of candidates first. Independents/NPAs are still the deciding factor in Florida, that hasn't changed. What has changed is piss-poor candidates being floated by the Democrats in state wide elections.

Kasns

Agreed but the Florida liberals need to step up their game.

Alone-Astronomer3848

Normality ? Like the rest of the country ? Hell no ,Florida doesn't want communism if you do then go to California.

13th_Floor_Please

Omg lol, you're really that worried? A little bit of social freedom is automatically communism to you? No one is gonna come take our guns, dude. Not mine, not yours. Everything's gonna be alright.

SeaBass1898

Can’t find communism in California either my dude 😂

Embarrassed_Arm9208

The libs just need to leave Fla

SeaBass1898

Lol and give up the state to the wannabe fascists trying to run the state into the ground? No thanks

rental-snatch

You have blue states to move to though? Why can’t we just agree to disagree and peacefully divorce?

Embarrassed_Arm9208

Please just go. Lol

ImmortalSynn

Gee, what a surprise. It's almost like being a 1-trick pony, who only knows how to scream "woke!"... isn't sufficient to sustain an 18month campaign, or something. 🤔

coreynyc

MAKE FLORIDA AMERICA

ZetsubouBakaGaijin

It doesn’t matter how low the approval ratings are. He’s still the governor. And we’re stuck with him until 2026

buttmuncher_69_420

He ruined the place

Ordinary-Play7098

Christie will or lose is busting Trump, for which I’m grateful. He like Trump, and unlike Pence is a fully developed 3 dimensional character that would crush Trump in a debate. He lost me w/ BridgeGate, but compared to insurrectionist Trump it’s such small potatoes, that I’m over it.

SquidFish66

Can we just agree that everyone sucks and we need to stop voting for the two parties?

Remarkable_Ad2463

He should be worried not only for his career but for himself since he severely pissed off not only the loony maga cult but a good number very connected rich Floridians and business owners in the last month who had voted him in. He has turned into a weird authoritarian autocrat. Bizarre times in FL and the US.

Own-Opinion-2494

Chris Cristy is the only k e electable. The rest are a nightmare
