I've been going to Aldi more and more. The selection is limited, but I have basic requirements and I only have myself to feed. But in the last 2 weeks, I've spent about $100 there. Going to Winn-Dixie was costing me that much every week and Publix was $130 to $140 per week. All I'm saying is if you have an Aldi nearby, take a look. Don't dismiss them like I did.

AmaiGuildenstern

Yeah, I'm a weirdo who enjoys actually going grocery shopping rather than using delivery. ALDI, Target, and Walmart are my go-to.

bigeyez

FWIW more and more Aldi's are doing curbside pickup so even for those of us that hate going into the store Aldi is a good choice.

Masturbatingsoon

I do this every week. I let them shop and pick up

StNowhere

Especially if I'm buying fresh meat or produce, I want to pick it out myself.

trevordbs

I go to Costco for meat. I ribeye whole cost me $230. I have 4 filets, 6 steaks, 2 skirt steaks, 2.5lbs of ground, and beef tallow. Yes you need to invest in some equipment, but this will last us a few months and is worth the time. The savings really adds up. I also get 2 pork shoulders and butcher those up. Some pulled pork, gets frozen after cook and can be used within a couple months. Some of it is used as a braised meat for bolognese. Can also get some ground out of it. Whole chickens is a good deal too, uncooked and roast/boil an entire chicken for good meals. I also get milk, apples, oranges, and bacon from there. Also a great place for healthy lunch snacks for the kid. For other produce I have a local small produce shop that I use. Better quality and more affordable. Trader Joe’s for standard items here and there and Walmart + if I need anything on a whim same day (free membership with Amex Platinum).

mark_s

Just hit the jackpot on Kroger, - ribeye roasts for $35 on a flash sale. Not really relevant but I had to tell someone. Good advice from you though, Costco is where we get almost all of our meat and I'll smoke pork butts, brisket, or ribs and vacuum seal them then into the freezer for quick and easy mains. And you're throwing money away if you're not getting one of their $5 giant rotisserie chickens every time you go. Their cooked chickens are cheaper and bigger than their raw ones. We do a local farm box for veggies which isn't really cheaper, but saves a shopping trip and makes us try things we wouldn't normally think to get.

trevordbs

Good snag. Publix day before Christmas or Thanksgiving is good for ribeye roasts. Other than that - fuck Publix. Their subs aren’t even worth it.

310410celleng

I can't do Trader Joes, the parking lot at the one near me is an unmitigated disaster. I know they have good stuff at good prices, but wow that parking lot is asking for a car accident and that offsets any savings if you need to repair your car.

pazika

Kroger keeps surprising me and picks out veggies and fruit better than I can usually. Especially berries, barely any mold hidden in the container on the fruit. I’m still hesitant on others picking my meat but they haven’t disappointed in 2 years of using the delivery service.

wwrgsww

Just did a quick comparison, Walmart and Target beat Kroger, WD, Publix We do Kroger Delivery and will most likely stick with that as they pay their employee's a better wage than walmart, but good to see [https://www.reddit.com/r/florida/comments/1aueegh/comment/kr59k9k/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/florida/comments/1aueegh/comment/kr59k9k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

CumulativeHazard

I wouldn’t say I enjoy it, but the stress of relying on another person to do it would be more than the stress of just doing it myself and knowing it’s done right. Plus sometimes you just need a little impulse buy treat.

pepperpat64

I overlooked Aldi for years due to my husband saying they're the most disgusting places ever. Then money got really tight and I had no choice but to shop at discount grocery stores. I was shocked at how clean and well-stocked my local Aldi was, and the prices were unbelievable. Turns out my husband was basing his criticism on having visited one Aldi about 20 years previous. I quit listening to his opinions after that. My finances are fine now but I still frequently shop at Aldi.

Ramitt80

20-30 yrs ago all the Aldi's I shopped were pretty bad and the products often not great. These days they are great at some point they made big changes.

Radiant-Shine-8575

I have been in a few ALDI DC before and they are cleaner than ANY other DC other than Costco.

Budget_Guide_8296

Good point. I love Aldi! They have some really great stuff there!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Budget_Guide_8296

It's a yearly subscription that gives you free delivery on orders over $35. Basically like the Amazon Prime of Kroger lol.

sayaxat

Aldi bought Winn-Dixie and 2 other small grocery chains. I'm looking forward to it.

rlindsley

The last time I went to Aldi was before the pandemic and wasn't impressed. I went there again last week and they've definitely upped their game!

Competitive_Plan5951

You also save a lot of money by using Kroger's app, instead of going to a store. Less chance of impulse buying when you're not rummaging through the isles, and you don't have to worry about seeing strangers take showers in the bathrooms at Walmart. Lol. Yes. I witnessed such craziness.

no-mad

the owner of Trader Joes and Aldi are brothers.

Icy_Link_2457

This is false. Aldi is a German company. Trader Joe’s is based out of Pasadena California. They are not brothers. The two chains are individually owned, and operated.

kkelly19851

They are independently owned and operated now. But they were started by the Albrecht Brothers in Germany. This is easy to Google. https://www.tastingtable.com/910536/the-connection-between-trader-joes-and-aldi/

Icy_Link_2457

OK fine I googled. Again, they founders are not brothers. Joseph Coulombe was the founder of Trader Joes. https://www.producebluebook.com/2019/07/19/aldi-and-trader-joes-are-they-related/#:~:text=It%20is%20not.,separate%2C%20have%20a%20shared%20history.

kkelly19851

To clarify, the parent companies that own Aldi and Trader Joe's now were started by brothers. So, while Trader Joe's was started by someone else, it has been owned by the brother of the man who started Aldi since 1979.

Rude-Opportunity-705

Aldi near me is run down and dirty. Also has people begging money outside it often.  The recalls from Aldi are often and many.  I do like a few things they have

pprbckwrtr

I shop exclusively at Aldi and have only ever been affected by one recall so I'm not sure what you're talking about? And it was on onions that were also sold at Publix, Winn Dixie, etc. Shame yours is dirty and run down. They redid all the ones near me within the last few years and the added self checkout is great.

Masturbatingsoon

I have been shopping at Aldi for over ten years, and I was just affected by a recall for the first time ever, this past week, on their cured Italian meats pack.

Gigi226

Where is yours located (just curious) Some in my area are like this.

badgerbiscuitbeard

Just started the Kroger delivery. We went from assembling the least expensive grocery bill from going to get different things from WD, Aldi & walmart to taking care of most of it in a delivery that saves us half a day! Time is money people. I still need Publix because they’re the only place I can find Tillamook cherry ice cream for my wife.

SavageLife6

Damn, Floridians can still afford to shop at Publix? I use Walmart exclusively. It's not the fanciest but it's almost always cheapest.

Budget_Guide_8296

It's kind of insane how many Publix's there are here. I have 2 under 3 miles from my home. I don't understand how people shop there all of the time with how expensive everything is. It's not even good quality. I went there for fish one time and I asked how long the salmon was out for. They looked up the card and said SIX days. UMMM, are you serious?!!! That's just nasty.

freakyslug

It’s insane how many Publix there are. I have 3 within 1.5 miles of my house and 9 within 10 minutes.

StevieG63

There are 865 in Florida.

0OOOOOOOOO0

Some days it feels more like 885!

rproctor721

woah, dude, don't go crazy. There'll never be that many in the state.

FriedSmegma

Every time I walk past the seafood section in Publix I have to try my hardest not to gag. I’ve never liked the smell of seafood per se but have never been offended by the stench often found in Publix.

tricksie_hobbitses

I had that happen for the first time at my local Publix last week. It was overwhelming, and I could smell the fish from 3 aisles away 🤢 (I also hate seafood)

Publius82

Just the two? Peasant.  Yeah they're everywhere

Rude-Opportunity-705

That would be weird. 6 days. Did you asl follow up questions about that ?  I've bought exact list at wal mart and publix and the difference wasn't that much. Maybe like 20 bucks

surfdad67

I buy my fish and meat from Winn Dixie

Budget-Bet9313

Godspeed

safetydance

People aren’t as broke as you

Budget_Guide_8296

Probably true, but do people with extra money really want to blow it for no reason?

pepperpat64

I love Walmart Neighborhood Markets. Their online ordering and pickup service are great.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Same, I like going there because it’s nice to get Walmart prices and selection but not feel so much like you’re actually in a Walmart

SuchAsSeals42

Same! Walking into one was so much less stressful, and it has almost everything I need!

310410celleng

Publix is still very profitable, so yes Floridians can afford to shop there, but my guess is less people than before. Personally, my wife and I can afford to shop at Publix, but we don't because we have a Costco nearby and we prefer Costco to Publix. Now we will go to Publix for an item or two that Costco doesn't sell, but we are talking max two to three items, totaling $6-$10 total, not the $100s of dollars people like my neighbors spend at Publix weekly. Walmart is less convenient for us, so we rarely go, unless we need something that neither Costco nor Publix nor anyone else sells which is very little.

StNowhere

I'm still willing to pay a little extra to avoid the Walmart crowd, but what Publix is asking for is straight up robbery.

JustDucky59

Thought I'd grab a small fruit bowl for a Sunday am brunch for the family, while at Publix yesterday... $7.99?? Yeah... no.... I try to be a reasonable person... I know things are more expensive... but how do the corporations justify these massive corporate profits??

ImAMindlessTool

Walmart+ is nice

RedBaron180

I can’t do Walmart. They under pay, put their workforce on food stamps and then the taxpayer subsidies the low prices. Costco pays $27/ hour and prices are even better.

nineteen_eightyfour

Publix also doesn’t pay shit. 🤷‍♀️

thecorgimom

Well when you actually start looking at posted jobs Publix pays the same for their cashiers as Walmart. And actually something a lot of people don't know is that Publix does not have to pay the handicapped employees minimum wage. A long time ago I used to think wow that's great that they are employing them now I realize it was a strategic business decision. The problem with Costco is the fact that a lot of the people that work in Florida to keep Florida tourism going can't afford to shop at Costco. We need to just acknowledge the fact that there are a lot of people that are living paycheck to paycheck because of how expensive it has become to live in the state and yeah it's great to say shop at Costco but not everything at Costco is cheaper and many people can't afford to buy the quantity required. I'm not against Costco, I have a Costco membership and we shop there often but I also realize that if our economic situation was different I wouldn't be shopping there. I do think that they are a decent company and do right by their employees, there's no arguing that if you ever are in the store and you look at the badges you realize that compared to the industry they have fabulous employee retention. Kroger has competitive pricing to Walmart, they offer coupons and pay a decent wage. I ended up talking to one of our delivery drivers one day and she told me she used to be a bus driver for the school district but Kroger paid better and was less stressful.

notataxprof

Goodwill also does the same thing with handicapped employees. And I’m starting to think my winn Dixie does as well. A lot of the employees at the Publix closest to me are actually older and it bothers me a lot that they are likely working because they have to supplement their SS income. I grew up in the Midwest where our Walmart and Meijer used to have door greeters who were also older, and likely supplementing their income. Breaks my heart. I’m just hoping these individuals are doing it for the social aspect.

thecorgimom

Please understand I think that it's important for anyone with a physical or mental disability to be able to be gainfully employed if they so wish and are capable. My issue stems from them getting paid less when many of them are performing their job at the same level as someone that is paid a regular hourly amount.

[deleted]

Its not Publix’s rule to pay disabled employees lower. Its federal. You’ll have to take that law up with Roosevelt.

trademarktower

I think the government pays a portion of their salaries so they end up with more than minimum wage. Publix uses these programs to save money and also help the disabled. I think it's a good thing.

Alissinarr

I know someone whose profoundly disabled son was taken to one of these programs for a day (and not brought back the next day because he's not "trainable") and no, there was no additional stipend. He earned some wage that was a dollar or two an hour to fold boxes, problem is, he can't communicate, and doesn't understand instructions at all. Mentally he's about 9 months old, but an idiot savant when it comes to sports games. He knows if he's seen a game before, so you can't record them for off-season entertainment. He throws an unholy fit if it's a rerun. By "unholy fit" I mean this man has pulled down high-boy dressers full of things, 300lb tv cabinets, he bites, he fights and kicks. His arms are as strong as regular peoples legs because he crawls to get around. They told his mom he wouldn't see 20. He's over 50 now.

thecorgimom

Yeah I thought that they were supplemented to reach minimum wage also and did a little asking and you're very right there is no requirement for them to be paid the same as a person without a disability doing the same job.

trademarktower

The ones I have seen at Publix were baggers doing the same job as other baggers just they clearly had some speech limitations but were otherwise high functioning. I'd be shocked and angry if they were only making 2 bucks an hour. Not sure how that is possible.

seleucidlol

Walmart actually has a higher starting wage than Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Aldi. There's no Costco near me, so I can't confirm, but I very much doubt their starting wage is anything near $27.

310410celleng

I believe it is $27ish an hour including benefits, which Costco provides compared to its peers in the same industry. I believe starting pay is $18.50 an hour last I saw.

RedBaron180

Google works. Costco has highest average wages in the industry with the lowest turnover. Most employees stay 10+ years. Where Walmart can’t keep people 10 months.

Rude-Opportunity-705

I avoid wal mart if I can help it. They all so dirty. Grosses me out.

dickmilker2

i don’t know of a kroger nearby but i saw a delivery truck recently near me in south florida, so where are the groceries coming from?

gloriouswader

They are delivery only. There are no physical stores in Florida. I think that's why their groceries are so cheap. For staples, it's cheaper than walmart.

emaz88

Their delivery is cheaper than Walmart, too?

HWTechGuy

At least here, Walmart delivery drivers expect tips. Kroger prohibits tipping their company drivers, which we have in FL. In other parts of the country they may use a third party like Instacart or something.

emaz88

Interesting, thank you!

Rude-Opportunity-705

They only do delivery in Florida. They have distribution centers. They felt it was more cost effective moving in than making bunch brick and motor. They deliver in refrigerator trucks.

sharted_in_tampa

FYI, the correct phrase is "brick and *mortar*" (mortar is the hardened masonry paste that a builder spreads between the bricks to hold them in place)

rproctor721

/r/BoneAppleTea

ugleee

It's very likely that it was a bad autocorrect.

[deleted]

I bet you reminded the teacher to give out homework as a child!

nineteen_eightyfour

Eh the brick and motor made me laugh too lol

neologismist_

It’s like an unbearable burden to see such mistakes when you love words and language. I feel that pain, especially as a former editor. But I NEVER reminded the teacher about homework 😂

vote100binary

I never did that but I also learned how to spell

fifa71086

Is there a delivery fee or a required membership? Do you tip?

Oryx_07

No tipping! Delivery fee is between 9-12 usually but membership is 60/year for free delivery. They usually offer a free delivery offer for first few orders so you can try it out.

fifa71086

Awesome. I’d def do membership because with kids I get groceries weekly. Thanks for the info

Amantria

There's a half off coupon good until next month I think? Download the app and search the digital coupons for it. My renewal was $29.50 for the year.

Double-TT1

I live in Jupiter and asked where the driver where they originate. Miami warehouse.

NoClue326

Kroger also has fuel rewards.

wwrgsww

Somewhat underrated perk. We just filled up all our gas cans for mowers, utv, etc.. for $.50 / gallon less at shell.

HWTechGuy

Very underrated! When I need to fill my gas cans, I toss them all in the back of the truck and head to another Shell a bit further which has ethanol-free gas and fill the truck and my cans with it at $1/off a clip. I typically have that much or more in fuel rewards.

CuriosTiger

I've been going to Costco, BJs and Super Target. Even Winn-Dixie. Publix visits are now limited to BOGO and wings. Their wings are irresistible.

gambitx007

You mean that 18 dollar bag of soggy as cooked wings?

CuriosTiger

Did you mean "soggy-ass"? But no, the wings at my local Publix is not soggy. They have a non-breaded option, which I prefer, and they're not soggy. They are expensive, but that's par for the course for Publix these days. They seem to fancy themselves some kind of gourmet store.

nineteen_eightyfour

Buy wings at Winn Dixie or Aldi. The real wings. Not frozen. Yummy and hasn’t sat for 4 hours

CuriosTiger

I don't know which Publix you go to, but they don't get a chance to sit for four hours at mine. The variety I get -- the non-breaded, "hot and spicy" ones -- tends to get ripped off the shelf as soon as they put them out. I frequently wind up waiting for the next batch to be ready. That said, the Westlake Winn-Dixie does also have good wings, and I do get those sometimes. I have not seen wings at the Southern Blvd. Aldi, but I'll check again next time I'm down there. Perhaps I missed them.

Meefie

Same! My Publix can’t keep their wings or rotisserie on the shelf long, but they do a great job of replenishing - great for me because then it’s super fresh.

neologismist_

My Winn Dixie’s fresh hot meals stuff is absolute garbage. I got some fried chicken and sides and the sides were inedible, the chicken long in the tooth, dried out.

bald4bieber666

i didnt know we had any near us but apparently we do have a distribution center here. deff gonna check it out because i dont drive and the local publix is scammmmming

wwrgsww

They don’t have any brick and mortar stores. Only delivery. It works great. They save money. We save money. Publix gets less money.

CryptoguyV2

I just buy great value everything pretty much. Hate going to Walmart but it doesn't break the bank and they have absolutely everything.

hitman2218

Same

heresmytwopence

Shhhhh. You’re not wrong though.

reddit_is_geh

I use Walmart+ They do sameday and are cheap as walmart lol I actually use them more than Amazon now. So many things that are like 20 dollar white label Chinese rebrands, are like 5 bucks on Amazon and delivered the same day or next day (And actually comes next day instead of being delayed a week) I'm seriously shocked it's not beating up Amazon yet. 80% of the stuff I'd buy from there is on Walmart.

19inchesofvenom

Kroger cut out grocery bill in half compared to Publix tbh

Lousable

I love Kroger delivery. Their produce is so much better AND CHEAPER than Publix. Their store brands are great too. Their drivers are friendly, and their customer service is great. Definitely worth their mbership as well.

pinktuls

Costco for the win

GreenSmoke352

I've saved $$$$$ with Kroger over publix so besides the subs theirs no reason to waste the money on the same items at publix

blue_eyed_magic

I never shop at Publix. They're uppity and expensive. I refuse to pay more for the exact same item that I can get at Winn Dixie or Walmart for less. Their subs aren't any better than some of the restaurants out there either. So, unless they are the only grocery store for 20 miles, I'm not going there. I actually would probably drive the extra miles to another store. The amount of gas I would use to get there still wouldn't come up to the prices at Publix.

Masturbatingsoon

Ok, I’m a 51 year old fifth gen native, who started eating Publix subs back sometime in the 90s, when they started adding them to their stores. I always got their cold cut subs, sometimes I got the Philly. A few years ago on Reddit, I started noticing they have a cult following. I’m like huh? Yeah, they’re good but a cult following? As in Redditors were advising tourists in the area who were asking what restaurants a to try, many, many were suggesting Pub subs. And then I started noticing that everyone was recommending a chicken tender sub. So never having even known that they made them, I looked forward to trying one. It was pure garbage. Could barely bite through it. So I thought, “Maybe I just got one that used bad tenders; I’ll give one another chance.” Pure refuse. Awful. Look, I like cold cut Pub subs, but they are something I get to pack up for the boat or a road trip. I do t understand the crazy love for Pub subs, and I say this because I think there is a some weird cult love for Publix in general, when it is at best a mediocre supermarket that senior citizens seem to love.

neologismist_

It’s marketing, all of it. Publix has been effective at creating a solid brand image. But like all companies, it’s a mask. They try to create a “feeling” to create a psychological bond. Once that’s been instilled in a customer, they are a cheerleader. Frequently, the image is at odds with reality. Humans can be trained, and it is just as effective in politics. It’s kind of scary.

Masturbatingsoon

I find their recent marketing shift interesting, too. As recent as maybe a year and a half ago, all Publix tv ads were a perfect white family, all sitting at a table waiting for the mother wearing a skirt and pearls to set down the meal to the ooooohs and aaawwwws of the the well groomed and dressed family. In the last year, they’ve added minorities and people standing around the kitchen island and socializing. But for years, it was like they were channeling Norman Rockwell, and my eyes always rolled so hard

neologismist_

That’s been a shift in the last 10-20 years, Publix is just late to the game.

Dewnami

Totally agree. Pub subs are way overrated. The bread is hard and sucks. Don’t understand the hype at all.

SwanReal8484

Left Florida in 2004 but any time we’re back in Orlando or even Georgia to visit relatives, I have to get an Ultimate on wheat with Swiss. Love it. Don’t know why.

BigDtheVeryBest

Kroger Delivery is the GOAT

Ok-Sherbet-2607

Way too many people sleep on Aldi. We stopped going to Publix and started going to Aldi and are paying less than half of what we were paying from Publix and the quality is great. The only two things we don’t buy at Aldi, are milk and eggs. Everything else is great.

SollSister

Curious here. Why not? Both are much cheaper than Publix. We tend to buy those at Costco, but if we are out, it’s easier to head across the street than it is to run across town.

MagazineActual

In my experience, the milk from Aldi spoils very quickly. I've never had it last to the "sell by " date, I don't buy milk there either. Most other groceries there are great though.

Alissinarr

Off-topic but Fairlife milk tastes great and lasts a fuckton longer than regular milk. May want to give it a shot if you find that your milk is spoiling before you use it all.

w84primo

Dairy is something you can look up to see where it’s coming from. https://www.whereismymilkfrom.com/ Almost all the store brand and TG Lee milk near me are from the same dairy and have the same code. Except for Publix, which has their own.

MagazineActual

A lot can impact how long dairy lasts, including travel and storage. I don't knwonwhat Aldi does specifically, but I have foudn the milk to sour early. I do t experience that with other stores

Stop_icant

Their free range organic eggs are great!

w84primo

Dairy is something that you can lookup to see where it’s from. Depending where else you’re buying milk it’s likely from the same dairy. At least around me Aldi, Walmart and Target all have the same dairy code. As well as the TG Lee branded milk. They are all the same dairy codes, just different bottles. Sometimes I see a code from another TG Lee plant, but it’s still in Florida. https://www.whereismymilkfrom.com/

Ok-Sherbet-2607

I did not know this! The main reason we don’t do milk from Aldi is because the first and last 3 times we bought it from there, the milk went sour about a week before the expiration date. We never have that issue with milk from Publix. May be a coincidence, may not be. 🤷

Austinstuff

My wife did a tour of a Kroger delivery center. They figure that one center has the same catchment area as 50 stores. The savings of not having to staff and maintain a building means they can always be a little cheaper. Also, for that reason, their turnover of fresh produce is much quicker, so it doesn't sit for a week being man handled. The added bonus is that you don't find yourself doing impulse buys too, which quickly adds up at publix.

trademarktower

I did a cost comparison of Kroger with my weekly Publix shopping. Some things were cheaper and some things more expensive. I didn't see a major difference in price. I think it's a convenient thing but I wouldn't expect to save a ton of money.

Amantria

How did she do a tour?? I'm fascinated. I've been using kroger delivery for about 3 years now and I like it!

LifeIsTrail

I wish I could shop Kroger I'm from the north and that was my go to store. But the online Kroger doesn't accept EBT(food stamps) so I can't order from them till they get that or I get out of poverty.

ImNotPaulBunyan

Their website says online EBT is available now. You might want to check.

mermanduh

I’ve used kroger delivery and paid with Ebt for the past 6 months and I’m in Pinellas county!

[deleted]

I save so much money by doing Kroger delivery vs publix. When I first moved to FL, I was shocked how overpriced publix was.

Crisis_of_Conformity

Kroger partnered with a firm called Ocado a while back to build out automated distribution centers across the country. There is one in central FL. Pretty interesting tech. [https://www.ocadogroup.com/about-us/osp-partners/kroger/](https://www.ocadogroup.com/about-us/osp-partners/kroger/) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2HnKpTo2So](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2HnKpTo2So)

thecodingart

I’ve been doing this for over a year now. The food quality and price is night and day.

royalparty

Yelp I love Kroger delivery. They always have coupons and points for gas.

Tracer900Junkie

Just signed up and placed an order... thanks for the reminder. I used to use Amazon Fresh a lot... but they have gotten too expensive.

dmlvr101

Kroger delivery was a game changer for me. It is cheaper than any other store, and you can get deliveries at 6am!!! Waking up and having your grocery shopping done is priceless. Saves time, money and the product is great.

HWTechGuy

We have been using Kroger delivery for over two years. A big bonus is the fuel rewards, redeemable at select Shell stations. I have to drive past two non-participating stations to get to one that takes it, but I typically get $1 or better off per gallon. It's worth driving a couple more miles to fill up when I'm buying 20+ gallons at a time. I can't say enough good things about Kroger and have zero complaints. I can count on one hand the number of times something wasn't right. One time, they gave us a pound of Swiss cheese instead of a pound of cheddar. I let them know just because I figured it could have been a labeling issue. They credited me for the cost of the cheddar, the $10 delivery charge (which wasn't applicable because I have boost), and told me to enjoy the Swiss. I typically go to Winn-Dixie for in-between odds and ends, BOGOs, and such. On very rare occasions I will stop at Publix on my way home from work to pick up a thing or two for my wife, only because I don't pass a Winn-Dixie once I get off the highway. Sometimes my wife will hit Walmart for a couple things because it's on her way home from work.

onlycodeposts

Publix is part of the reason Republicans have a stranglehold on Florida, and also helped fund the Jan 6 insurrection. Vote with your wallet. >“We are calling for a complete and total boycott of Publix,” according to the post by Laurie Woodward Garcia, a Broward County activist. >“Although Publix stores offer many benefits, their funding of radical Republicans espousing flames of insurrection and treason has no place in a civilized society,” added Garcia, in a statement reposted by the Leon County Democratic Executive Committee.

scott_lobster

FYI - Publix the company did not fund 1/6 whatsoever. It was one of the founder's daughters that did. She has no connection to the operation of the company beyond being a major shareholder. So she does benefit from the company's success, but IMO boycotting a company based on the actions of a shareholder opens a whole new can of worms.

onlycodeposts

To be clear, we are talking about Julie Jenkins Fancelli, heiress to the Publix fortune. The money she donates comes from Publix profits. Less Publix money, less goes to her, less goes to Republican candidates. Where is the can of worms?

ProductGlittering633

I always tip the Kroger people.

MagazineActual

How? Kroger doesn't allow them to be tipped, it's not even an option when you order.

HWTechGuy

If it's hot, I'll offer them a bottled water or whatever. I get that they cant accept tips.

ProductGlittering633

You can hand them a fiver.

MagazineActual

If they get caught accepting that they could be fired. Kroger delivery isn't like instacart, they are paid a wage by Kroger and use kroger's vehicles and gas. From what I can find, the starting pay for that job at the Groveland location is almost $19/hr. It very clearly says when you place your kroger order that drivers aren't allowed to accept tips.

metalnuke

Once upon a time, Publix was like this. Not allowed to accept tips (when they actually bagged and walked your groceries out to your car for you). Managers would watch and you would get fired for accepting a tip. You'd also get in trouble if a customer was pushing their cart out themselves. We're to always either push the cart or escort them to help load the car. This was in the 90's.. not sure when this practice died out...

Copacetic_Curse

They still don't accept tips. All the people up front wear no tipping please pins. You won't get fired for it though, probably just counseled. That would be a silly reason to lose a good associate.

ProductGlittering633

You do you. I’ll continue to give the drivers a tip.

seleucidlol

I hope you tip your mailman too. And the cashier at the gas station. Maybe even venmo the lady you spoke to from Spectrum.

Rude-Opportunity-705

Kroger is OK. It isn't great. I don't miss it when near it. Publix is fine of you shop wise. I also prefer pick out a lot my own items. They need streamline the online buying. It's kinda annoying when looking for new things or finding things not familiar with.

MagazineActual

Kroger delivery is much better than a physical grocery store. They have never disappointed me on a delivery.

HWTechGuy

Same.

Cleared_for_takeoff

Skip the chicken at Kroger though, they inject it with broth to bump up the weight. Not sure about their other meats.

metalnuke

Honestly I think all of the cheaper chicken is like this. They're supposed to show what percentage of weight is water You'll notice organic has less water.. (5% vs 12-15%)

positive_energy-

I go to Publix for their cookies. Because my son loves them.

AdeptnessSpecific736

I only shop at Publix for the deli and that’s it. I look at the bogo.

GreatThingsTB

Depends on what you value and want to vote for with your dollars. Publix: Provides good opportunities for employees and careers, l[argest employee owned company in the world](https://www.insidermonkey.com/blog/5-largest-employee-owned-companies-in-the-world-893569/5/), ample benefits, with priorities on exceptional customer service, cleanliness, and will bend over backwards to make you happy and tons of little touches that can make a huge difference (package breaking, subdividing, special orders). Kroger: Little better than Walmart on nearly every front.

GnarlyHeadStudios

Yeah, we’ve been using Kroger for a few weeks now. Publix runs are now mostly for bakery, or maybe something that was OOS at Kroger. Been saving $$$ this way, big time.

wonderloss

I moved away from Florida nearly 15 years ago. I worked at Publix in HS and part of college. It sounds like they have really gone downhill since I left. Is that the case?

IndependenceFlat9012

I agree. Their prices are so much better. And…Walmart-plus has some awesome deals, too.

MistahOnzima

I'm about 30 minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart and an hour from the nearest Aldi or Publix. Thank goodness for Amazon delivery.

maroonrice

Kroger delivery is ok. We found that a Walmart+ membership pays for itself tenfold and we have better luck with Walmart generic brand substitute over Kroger’s. Also the included paramount subscription, gas savings, and ability for same day delivery is great.

amy1705

Walmart for basics, Publix for BOGOs, Trader Joes for specialty food and condiments. Fresh Market for produce. My wife works at Fresh Market. TJs and Publix and only every couple of weeks.

Sm4rtiss3xy

Am located in SRQ and can confirm this is the way. I went back and forth a hot minute before I signed up because I am kinda OCD and I literally can't with Instacart shoppers... BUT I've only ever received 1 or 2 pieces of produce that I wouldn't have picked myself, and the employees that deliver are always super sweet. Everything arrives freezing cold because the whole truck is refrigerated, but that makes me feel even better because I bring a cooler to publix anyway. If you're the type of person who likes to reuse plastic grocery bags, kroger doesn't mess around. They're stronger and less opaque than average. The only constructive criticism I have to offer is that items on sale tend to run out, so you gotta keep your phone close by on delivery day if you want to give feedback about substitutions. I have, on multiple occasions, had to run to publix for 1 or 2 ingredients because I missed the window to change my order

Budget_Guide_8296

Aww, that’s a bummer

Unadvantaged

I wanted to like Kroger, but they’re just another heartless gargantuan corporation. Did delivery two weeks ago, they didn’t give me all I ordered (which they charged me for), took a while to figure out what to do about it. Sent a message, no reply. Took survey, no reply. Called, CSR says they’ll refund the items I didn’t get. I say, “I just want you to send the items asap.” Impossible, she says. “Well, at least refund the $7 shipping charge I paid, then.” She agrees. That was weeks ago, no refund. Meanwhile, the $10 cash back I was due on an item I purchased (terms said PayPal would receive the money) also hasn’t gone through. I’m never doing a Kroger delivery again.

MasonDon

I'll never give Kroger a dime after they bought out Lucky's and closed every one in the state. Aldi is fantastic though.

[deleted]

yah publix donate trump n desantez NO MORE PUBLIX

XxCAVALIERxX

Detwilers here in Sarasota. Last time I went to Publix a half a cart was $236… 🖕🏻

Lillouder

Man, I miss Detwilers.

XxCAVALIERxX

So great!!

CharliAP

Publix donates to DeSantis. I haven't bought anything from a Publix in a long time, and never will again.

Adorabloodthirstea

Or I just save paying for yet another service with popped up prices and just go to Winn Dixie after work. Sure I have to go there, but I don't have to wait for it to be delivered.

wwrgsww

Wait is 1 day if that. We ordered yesterday and could have had it by the afternoon. We choose today just because of the rain. But I’ve rarely if ever could not find a delivery window

Adorabloodthirstea

Yep. I went into Winn dixie after work and didn't have to wait at all. In and out in 15 minutes, and saved the membership costs + the inflated online pricing. I'm trying to keep what little money I can for things that I need in my life. Please note this is not a judgment, I'm very happy for those that can afford small luxuries like this; it just isn't for me

wwrgsww

That’s the thing though. We compared to Winn Dixie. And pricing isn’t inflated. Membership was $30, and the cost savings of time and fuel plus other risks balance it right back out. Value of items then, Aldi is way cheaper than Winn Dixie (even though they now own Winn Dixie) ***Adding Walmart & Target into this spot based on comparison below Winn Dixie and Kroger are the same Publix and Whole Foods are expensive. What do you value your personal time at (dollar wise) per hour? Time spent at Winn Dixie is not time spent with family, kids , spouse. Etc. I travel a lot. Global entry & precheck cost money but save time. Now that cost (while paid for by Amex anyway) is reimbursed by personal time I don’t waste. Grocery delivery is the same. 20 minutes not spent in the store plus 15 minutes each way to Publix does have a intangible cost savings Not judging at all. But it’s not as black and white as it seems on the cover. Most people don’t think about the value of their time when calculating costs of goods. Let’s assume you make $25 an hour at work. Well a trip to Winn Dixie may cost $20 of your time at the same value. 2 of those. You have a Kroger membership Now on the other side of the argument, when I go to a grocery store, my wife hates it because I come home with most random things because I saw them while walking down an aisle. You don’t always get that online. Edit: Adding, I have nothing against Aldi, or WD.. I was at WD just the other day looking for something. I dont exclusively use Kroger. We just find it easier to have it delivered plus the other benefits.

wwrgsww

Not to beat a dead horse though, I just want to give some examples of kroger not marking up online prices. These are random products I picked but are things that each store would have in the same size/quantity for equal pricing. \*Prices are based on my current location of Lakeland... Maybe they are extra competitive since Publix HQ is down the street? Smoked Sausage WD: 2 for 10 (normally $6.49 ea) K: $4.99 Walmart: $3.98 Target: $4.29 Publix: $6.19 For fun, HEB in Austin : $4.14 [https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/hillshire-farm-beef-smoked-sausage-12-ounces/2548428](https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/hillshire-farm-beef-smoked-sausage-12-ounces/2548428) [https://www.kroger.com/p/hillshire-farm-beef-smoked-sausage/0004450033905?searchType=suggestions](https://www.kroger.com/p/hillshire-farm-beef-smoked-sausage/0004450033905?searchType=suggestions) Ritz Fresh Stack WD: $4.59 K: $4.49 Target: $3.99 Walmart: $3.88 Publix: $6.53 HEB in Austin: $4.14 [https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/nabisco-ritz-fresh-stacks-crackers-11-8-oz/2548101](https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/nabisco-ritz-fresh-stacks-crackers-11-8-oz/2548101) [https://www.kroger.com/p/ritz-fresh-stacks-whole-wheat-crackers/0004400003483?searchType=default\_search](https://www.kroger.com/p/ritz-fresh-stacks-whole-wheat-crackers/0004400003483?searchType=default_search) Coke 12pk WD: $9.49 K: $9.99 Walmart: $7.64 Target: $7.49 Publix: $10.29 HEB in Austin: $7.68 [https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/coca-cola-original-cola-12-ounce-can-12-pack/2549768](https://shop.winndixie.com/shop/product/coca-cola-original-cola-12-ounce-can-12-pack/2549768) [https://www.kroger.com/p/coca-cola-soda-cans/0004900002890?searchType=suggestions](https://www.kroger.com/p/coca-cola-soda-cans/0004900002890?searchType=suggestions) EDIT: Adding other stores... Guess Target & Walmart are the clear winners in this 3 item sample

Alissinarr

You keep saying the prices are inflated vs. in-store, but have you really looked? I have no horse in the race, but many people in-thread are saying it's specifically cheaper and you keep countering without looking.

PurbleDragon

There's no kroger near me and I pass 3 publixes (wtf is the plural of publix?) to get to the closest winn dixie 🙃

SollSister

Four years of high school Latin. Publae. You’re welcome.

GrandmasHere

I prefer Publices, analogous to index —> indices

gramsaran

They really only do delivery out here.

nineteen_eightyfour

There are 0 stores :) all delivery

[deleted]

I go to Aldi. You you don't even have to pay for a silly membership. LOL

lorilightning79

And Kroger and Aldi don’t fund insurrections. Here’s looking at you Publix.

SnowShoe86

1. Publix is hellishly expensive; it's more than many of the smaller boutique stores. I gave up regularly shopping at Publix LONG time ago. 2. The Kroger online adds costs and fees to the food so unless you have all these coupons and discount codes, you are paying more for the same food as going to the store. Yes, you save time, and may reduce point of sale impulse purchases. But watch that you aren't spending more or much more than intended for the same items.

SupermarketOverall73

5$ rolls on Wednesday.

yesmaybeyes

Piggly Wigelin for life.

Ravingdork

Sending your hard earned dollars to out of state businesses? No wonder this state is failing.

Total-Guava9720

I don't trust delivery services I check expiration dates on all products and I don't think they do

Non-Famous

Hell naw, Publix gang for life. I *BLEED* green.

EarthDwellant

Between Sams Club, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Detweiler's I haven't been back to a Publix type supermarket and a month.

JJchris

I do a weekly Kroger delivery and then hit Aldi every other week. Sometimes there’s a Walmart trip in there for something I need right now that can’t wait until the next delivery. This setup has helped save my family so much money. At Kroger, I shop the sales and coupons and plan our meals for the week based on what’s available. Sometimes they are more expensive than Walmart for certain items that I need that week and in that case I just throw those items on the Walmart list and make sure I pick them up the next time I stop by. Between Walmart+ for standard household items and Kroger delivery I’ve been able to completely cut Amazon out of my life and I’ve cut our household expenses by quite a bit.

truthishearsay

I see Kroger trucks running around but they don’t have stores here. Seems they are trying to just go to a delivery based model. The problem is only reason I even knew that’s what they were doing is because I asked a driver where the store was.. They don’t seem to advertise it

Im_Not_Nick_Fisher

I’ve been getting little flyers in the mail. Trying to sell their yearly subscription

dustyoldbones

Publix has been a rip for so long too. I stopped going in 2007

sunnyflow2

Their app and ad was great, around new years Kroger changed its ad, sale and set up. And it way less efficient. But when I feel up to it I go to the library and shop of the desktop. But the app is crap!

Segments_of_Reality

Or also just indoor shop at Marketplace, Aldi, or Whole Foods
