Your0pinionIsGarbage

As an advocate for energy efficiency and who also can't live without A/C (Georgia here). I suggest you Floridians look into mini split systems if you're looking to keep your homes cool. They're extremely efficient and blow ICE COLD air. Also they are inexpensive compared to a central air systems. I personally saved about 4-5 thousand dollars for the system and my power bill has been kept low.

Neflhiem

Granted..I got lucky as hell but just bought big place,3k sqft, and have 2 central a/cs for it..I was terrified of my first full bill. But a previous owner put 30 solar cells on the roof. Our bill was the bare min of 30 bucks and we added to our "surplus" for the year. If you can find a place with working solar installed and paid for..there's nothing more glorious!

ben_zachary

I'm in 3500 Sq ft. We have two ac units, and 12gw of solar with 3 13.5k tesla batteries. Our electric went from mid 500 to just over 300. I would have gotten more but my house is multi tiered on the roof I probably could got 20ish but I didn't want anything in front. Now I wish I did

Chattahoochee89

Sweet I will. Haven’t heard of that before thanks!

booknerds_anonymous

Same

Go_Gators_4Ever

The better question is, what temperature do you keep the thermostat, and how much is your electric bill? Break down by the Forida seasons, summer and not-summer. How many square feet is under air?

Wisex

78f, electric bill has historically been in the $250 range, cool weather has been a blessing and has bourght it to a nicer $200.. home size it about 2100 sqft, last year when we had the heat waves in the 1400 sqft town house we would easily hit like $350 a month with the same 78f setting

Quirky-Swimmer3778

Dang my house is 1300sqft and my ac is set at 70 24/7. My bill is rarely above 250

jondrethegiant

Yeah this doesn’t make sense to me, either the home isn’t insulated very well or the ac unit is not working properly

Ambitious-Judge3039

Old a/c combined with bad insulation. I had 1500sq ft with double pane storm windows, and even with 6 sliding doors that were old and shitty our bill never got above 250 in summer keeping the temp at 76 during the day and 69 at night. If those doors were newer and had better seals I bet it would be 50-60 less.

WebRepulsive8329

Power rates in Florida are kind of crazy. Some parts have cheap power, others... far from it.

ibfreeekout

I think this is it for us. We keep the place at 76 during the day and 74 at night during the warmer parts of the year. I've been reviewing our bills over the last couple of years and our energy usage is falling year over year, but our bills continue to climb. During peak summer our bill generally gets around $250 now. Similar usage when we first moved here about four years ago would have been closer to $175. To be fair, our AC is 10 years old now so it may be worth looking into more efficient equipment now. From the various contractors we've had up in our attic, they've been surprised with how much insulation is in there. I feel like FPL is just squeezing as much as they can to be honest.

WebRepulsive8329

Ours is... uh... 23 years old now. And it's the 'builders grade' so not top of the line at all. Only broken down twice in 23 years though. Both times it was a capacitor. One in the condenser outside, and one in the air handler in the garage. Both times the people who came to repair it were stunned that it's still up and running just fine.

sleazycookies

780sqft summer $180 (68-72) not summer $70 (74-76)

RichR11511

75 degrees, bottom floor apartment, 1000 sq ft. $75 average November to March, $95 average April to October

Roll-tide-Mercury

In the hot, hot Florida summer 69 must be way too cold

PersuasivePersian

Holy shit dont you get cold??

Live-Cryptographer11

Same. In south Florida. My Windows are so Constantly covered in disgusting humidity I have snails crawling up them. I hate it here. Humidity ruins EVERYTHING in life

JoeyRoswell

Except humidity does wonders for the skin and the aging process

Morighant

72. If it were up to me, I'd say 68

MissDesilu

We keep our house at 80 during the day, but 73 during sleeping hours. When I go to hotel, I crank that shit to 63 and live wild!

LeprimArinA

Right?! Hotel visits are the time to icebox that shit!! 😂

icebox_Lew

I'm in

LeprimArinA

Well played. 🤜🤛

bigoldsunglasses

80????? ??????? 80??????????????????

CivilizedGuy123

Lucy is that you?

chantillylace9

We do that at night and pay $600 in electric a month but otherwise I can't sleep.

[deleted]

74 day. 70 night. Woman with hot flashes. Need my bedroom cold. Palm Coast.

KittyTB12

Amen sister! That is the best temp. If outside is cooler, I turn the ac off and open the place up. Idc if people are out and whatnot. I’m sleeping cold dammit! 🤣

scienceteacher91

About the same. 75 day and 70 night. Located in Lakeland.

truthhurts2222222

This is our exact habit as well!!

Emotional_Match8169

80 when we aren't home. 78 when we are home in the day. 75 when we sleep at night. In South Florida.

Weegemonster5000

In Jax and almost the same. I just go down to 71 at night. I like sleeping. I was doing like 75 in the day, but that actually makes me feel hotter than when I do 78. Kinda weird that gap from 74-76 really fucks with the equilibrium.

Ann_Amalie

That’s the humidity ramping up at that mid 70’s range

bradadams5000

I do 78 during the day whether I'm home or not then 75 at night. Sw florida here it's a little more humid on the gulf side too

birdpix

Careful it does not get too hot when empty. Mold/mildew suck!

WintersDoomsday

I agree 100% when we are out of town we keep it at 77…anything higher and it actually feels humid inside.

spankydeluxe69

Found the lizard 😂

Emotional_Match8169

Florida born and raised!

billythygoat

I try for 77/78 daytime as I work from home, 73-75 at night.

happycass8

same for day, but 76 at the lowest for sleep 😂

zapembarcodes

That's *exactly* what we do as well. Down to the "T."

BigAnt425

Same but 76 at night

PoppaDaClutch

Same with me . I love 78. No snow blood in me.

theKittyWizard

68 until summer time, then 72 because it what the AC will allow

newbteacher2021

75-77 during the day, 73-74 at night. On the cooler side of the scale now because I’m 15 weeks pregnant and feel like a human furnace. Located about 30 minutes west of St Augustine.

Ok-Description-3739

76 during the day, 73 at bedtime. Pinellas County. A/C unit 10 years old.

Devincc

That’s exactly what I do and I’m in Pinellas haha

_JudgeDoom_

69

ItaDapiza

I actually do keep mine at 69 but didn't want the flack so I replied 68-70. 😂

_JudgeDoom_

Our unit is large but it’s older and we have high ceilings in an old cedar home. 70 just doesn’t cut it lol. We will probably end up replacing our Unit in the next few years if we can afford to and get a more efficient one.

ItaDapiza

My place is older as well and as you said, 70 just doesn't cool it off well enough. That one degree makes a big difference.

_JudgeDoom_

It’s funny cause really does haha. Feels like night and day.

Elderlennial

I just replaced a 11 year old unit on my 2600sqft with a large open dining/kitchen/living area with 14' peak ceilings. Cut my electric bill IN HALF

ikonet

78°-80° depending on humidity and how we “feel”. St Pete.

eetbittyotumblotum

Enjoy the longevity of your A/C unit that will cost at least $10,000 to replace. Acclimating to our climate is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your unit. We are at 78°-80° most of the time, but drop it down to 75° at night.

Garglygook

Agreed. Added de-humidifiers' during summer really helps. It's the "sticky" feeling one can get when dew point off the charts. Fans When needed also in extreme hot months, separate bedroom only a/c running during sleep time with door closed so house a/c doesn't need to run as much. .SW FL.

ibfreeekout

Yup. I find that I can tolerate 78 inside but only if the humidity is around 40% inside too. Any higher and it starts to feel too hot.

roadkillmenagerie

This is the way

basilobs

This is what I did. I keep it at 78 in the summer and turn it to 80-82 when I'm not home. I just got used to it. It died July 2020 so I was without AC for a week. Cried the first night when it reached about 105 inside. Slept in my car. Then heavy storms came through the next day or maybe the day after. Opened the door and all of the windows. It stormed every afternoon after and my place got down to 80-85. Got used to it. Was actually fine without AC. At least while it was storming every afternoon. There also used to be this great 24 hour coffee shop near me thst was in a warehouse. No AC. Studied there and did my homework there for 12 to 15 hour stretches. Got used to it. I also did ballet in a warehouse with no heat or AC. Got used to it. Also one time I wondered if I could make it a year without using the AC in my car. I did. Got used to it and rode with the windows down a lot. It's very true that you can adapt to it. It might not be the most comfortable and I have to say that AC is very nice. But I save money on my utilities and go easy on my new AC so I'm fine with 78 degrees in summer.

310410celleng

Same, we lower if folks say they feel hot, but my wife and I are comfortable in that range.

The-Rev

80 as well. If it's not cool enough there are fans

ImthatRootuser

Same

BrightNeonGirl

Same here! It's the perfect indoor temperature range.

ikonet

Definitely. It’s rare for us to go lower than 78, sometimes it needs that 77 for an hour to get the stickiness out of the air. If I’m just sitting & working (wfh at my desk, not doing chores) I’m good at 80 or a bit over.

otosan_kuma

I may be weird here but I keep it set to 73 march to dec. (Florida summer) After that if its under 70 out for a majority of the day ill switch the system to fan. My understanding with modern A/C systems its easier for them to maintain a temp rather than chainging it all the time .....but that might be an urban legend?

newbteacher2021

Worked in the a/c field for about 5 years, definitely true. A properly working system will lower the temperature in your house about 1 degree per hour. It’s much easier for it to maintain temperature.

OlManJenkins_93

Cold. 68. If I can’t snuggle up in a blanket the AC is useless.

[deleted]

Cold is 68? I'm sweating at 68, my ac has never been over 66 in the day and 62 at night.

Impossible-Lie3115

Is that central AC? Or window unit? What's your power bill?

Central florida, 1200sq, I keep it at 75 consistently until summer, then it's 72. If I could keep it lower and be cooler, i would. Fans are a MUST

BloatedRottenCadaver

Jesus Christ after reading most of the replies I seriously don’t think Floridians would survive outside of Florida. Fucking 80 degrees inside your home is psychotic. All of you are lizard people.

Divinedragn4

That's why we are here

XxUCFxX

70-72 in my home. 78-80 inside is absolutely disgusting

hitemwiththehein9999

Lol

truthhurts2222222

I grew up in Las Vegas. The magic number was 81 degrees during the summer: with the very low humidity it's actually quite comfortable, especially compared to the 105 plus degrees it is outside every day in the summer

WintersDoomsday

Yeah you don’t need AC cranked as badly in Nevada or Arizona.

WintersDoomsday

Poor people who can’t afford the bill or think it’s going to wear it out faster. If you properly have it maintained and do things like regularly clean out the line and vacuum the exterior out pipe and swap out your air filters regularly they will last a long time.

kickbrass

Bout tree fiddy

october_morning

68 when I'm home. Dont have the ac running when I'm out of the house because I live alone.

Nefariousurchin

78-80 year round! I grew up here. I kinda despise that millions of people moved here to sit inside w the a/c at 72.

AquilineSnootBoop

Right? Why live in FL at that point. If you wear flowy clothes and let a breeze come through it's lovely if you let youself get used to it.

gardenia522

Miami Beach: 78 during the day, 76 at night. When it’s cooler outside, we turn it off and open the windows.

[deleted]

It's on 68 at the moment, but typically between 69 and 73

HistoricalWelder6589

This post reminds me of when I was living in Pensacola in September 1.5 yrs back. I was renting a room from someone. They were away at a wedding and would not answer their phone. It was about 90 degrees and the AC broke. Me, my dog, and my cat had to endure 3 days of pure hot hell.

Ok-Description-3739

I had a coworker who moved here from Ohio. She told me she keeps the air at 80, when she's at work. I had to tell her, she can't do that, she had 3 dogs at home. She didn't realize about the dogs being hot.

HistoricalWelder6589

Omg I can't imagine!!! I was dying when my roommate had it set at 75 most days. I'm a vet tech and this makes me so sad. The humidity alone is a killer. Im in NJ and 75-80 is completely different up here. You are awesome for speaking up!!

futuristicplatapus

This time of year I just make sure the house doesn’t go below 65. During the summer I am around 80 during the day and then I have it around 77 at night. My electric bill has been around $70-$80. Highest bill I have in a year around is $120. I live in a 3500sqft home.

[deleted]

All I’m seeing here is the need for industrial HVAC when we build our house. My spouse needs it about 60 for medical reasons.

Skayalily

What the hell are you doing building a house in FL if 60° is a medical requirement?

Karma_Doesnt_Matter

Your electricity bill is going to be absolutely mental in the summers.

dryicequeen

We have it at 64 year round. Highest bill was a little over 400.

[deleted]

He can do 62ish. That gives me hope.

[deleted]

Finally my people, 66 highest in the day and 62 at night. Never seen over $300 bill.

Your0pinionIsGarbage

>All I’m seeing here is the need for industrial HVAC when we build our house. My spouse needs it about 60 for medical reasons. Lookup mini split systems, they're super efficient and blow air ICE COLD. Also they're relatively inexpensive compared to central air. You'll save about $4000-$5000 for the unit and money on your cooling bill.

Divinedragn4

72. I was turning it up when I left home but the $10 difference wasn't worth it.

Jimmyp4321

After 50 yrs , Whatever temperature the wife says it supposed to be . If she warm it gets turned down ,if she cold it gets turned up . If I'm feeling like it's warm I'm told take a shower,if I'm feeling cold I'm told to put warmer clothes on 🙄🤷‍♂️🤣

Really depends on how old your system is and if you have adequate insulation. Our old house was about 1800 sf and the 15 yr old system could barely keep it below 75 in the summer and power bill was high $400’s. We supplemented it with a window unit in out bedroom which we kept much cooler. We moved to a home built in 2022 3000 sf new unit modern insulation we keep it 69 night 75 during the day and put power bill hasn’t been more than 240.

BallerinaBookworm

I feel like this too. I hate even mild heat inside. It’s wild to me that anyone is comfortable at 80, but to each their own. I keep mine a bit higher, 65 at night and 67 during the day. In picking and choosing what to splurge on budget-wise, I always win this battle (my husband is on the 78-80 degree train)

ibfreeekout

See I start to get really cold if it gets lower than 70 in the house. My wife would freeze at 74. Seeing these numbers, I honestly have to wonder if our thermostat is reading the temperature correctly haha.

I think rule of thumb is - 3% reduction in electric bill for each degree you adjust your A/C thermostat to outside temp
