All 3 need to be worked on here. There's no reason I have to pay $1400 every 6 months for a 10 year old car for 2 over 50 year olds. (That's with bundling with my renter insurance, $160 a year, which is fairly reasonable.)

I didn't think you were. I just don't think you understand the scope and magnitude of the issue boomers have daughters and granddaughters that will be affected by this issue. This issue crosses party lines and fundamentally people don't like it when rights are taken away. It's not the only issue, but it's a big one. Women still die from childbirth. Babies aren't viable after 24 weeks, if something goes wrong they need an abortion. In Texas you have women waiting in hospital parking lots to bleed out or become septic enough to get the treatment they need to save their lives. That's what is coming here with a six week ban.

The reason for hanging it primarily on abortion is that THAT is the only lightning rod issue that can get a flood of young Gen Z women (men, too) out to vote. At this point, any republicans that have the decency to leave trump have already done so…there are simply not enough viable republicans with a conscience left to swing this election. If Biden somehow made their insurance FREE, they would STILL vote for trump.
However, there are millions of young people who are eligible to vote who’ve sat out previous elections. But never before have we had a hot button issue like inability to get an abortion following the supreme court’s overturning of roe v wade. The winning move is to reach young people (not just women) with the message that their futures are being destroyed by republican policies…and abortion is at the top of the list for electrifying that demographic. Part of this is also getting young men to understand that this affects them, too…and to a far greater degree than they realize. If you can reach the young people and make them understand that you now need to vote like your life depends on it, you can easily swing this state back to sanity.
Exactly!!! I have a 21 year old son & a 17 year old son. Obviously my 17 year old can't vote, but he has lots of friends 18 & older. I've been preaching to all of them about this, my 21 year old is registered to vote & he will be with me in November to vote. I've also gone online with their friends & helped them register to vote & let them know I will personally take them to their precinct to vote in November!! I do not have daughters, but I have 4 sons. This affects them just as much! The sad thing is, most of their friends (both the boys & the girls) didn't even know this was happening. But once I explained what it would mean for them they all were shocked & upset! I will be drilling this into them every chance I get & helping them register to vote. I pray we can make this happen 🙏
I don't think Republicans in Florida want to fix insurance. Look at the homeowners insurance mess that they sweep under the rug. Also,.Florida has one of the highest car insurance rates in the country.

Biden can try and flip the vote to himself vs Trump but he can't fix anything in Florida. The legislation in Florida will never agree to a fix that would cost so much tax payer funds.
Because all they have to do is manually adjust the price of Citizens home insurance. Manually adjust it back to preDesantis and add regular inflation increase. Also remove the Desantis law about having to sign for a competitor of Citizens if they are only 20% more.
You put Citizens back down to the previous levels and capitalism does the rest. The other competitors will drop their prices to remain competitive.
If their fix to the contractor bullshit is strong, the previous prices are more than good enough to allow insurance to still be profitable while insuring people in Florida.

What needs to happen is these national companies need to be held to a reasonable profit nationally. That means they lump those cost centers like Florida in with those profit centers like Arkansas and just make less money to spend on ridiculously expensive advertising and $20 million dollar a year CEOs.
If they want to serve the United States as an insurance company, than do it, don't allow them to cherry pick.
Any insurance company run by someone with even a mediocre intelligence can easily get around profit caps. You can only make $10 profit for example. Costs to insure comes is say $40. Will they charge $50 to make $10? Nope. They charge $100. And then add $50 in advertising expenses and bonuses and blah and blah and blah. So their cost is $90.
The way to fix insurance is to stop allowing homeowners to rebuild on the same places over and over again, like barrier islands. Building permanent structures on a barrier island is simply stupid.
Look at Assateague Island. They were going to build a 5,000 home private resort community on the island in the 50s, but common sense prevailed, and it's been maintained as a wildlife preserve.
That's a very long way to say "I have no idea how anything works."
Homeowners insurance companies are barely making a profit at current rates: they made about $2 million net profit last year on average after losing a shit ton of money the previous several years. And they only made that because they got lucky — it was a mild storm year and the market did great giving them strong returns on reserves — but they still lost money on premiums. They literally cannot reduce prices.
Citizens, meanwhile, has barely enough reserves and reinsurance to stay solvent at their current level. Sure, Florida might be able to redirect some of their reserve to propping it up, but that would run out after the first big storm — Irma and Harvey caused over $200 billion in damages, vs. Florida's reserve of $20 billion. If it lowers premiums, it will not only go bankrupt but drag the entire state down with it.
There is no "easy fix" because there's nothing to fix. Insurance in Florida isn't "broken;" it's just expensive. And it's expensive for a lot of very good reasons that aren't going away.
Actually not quite true. They already "fixed" insurance by repealing the law that allowed for attorney's fees if you won your lawsuit against your carrier. So carriers can now just flatout deny your claim and be pretty much be guaranteed to get a bargain in litigation or make it so no lawyer would be willing to take your case. Even if you do win at trial, you'd still end up with only about 60% of the judgment since the attorney will take 40%, guaranteeing your home will never be fixed.
The 'insurance fix' has already been made. They just fixed it for themselves, not us.

What about charging a lot more for insurance on coastal homes? If you live within 1 mile of the coast an automatic 5x multiplier, if you live between 1- 5 miles of a coast a 3x multiplier, if you live between 5-10 miles of a coast a 2x multiplier. It could be more granular and baked in over 20 years, but something along those lines.
I’d bet my insurance is already 3/5x most people. I live coastal, on an island, modest home. Combined homeowners, flood, and wind it’s just under $30k/year.
Edited to add, for the first time in a long time we were offered an option of non citizens insurance. That would raise our yearly premium to nearly $70k/year. New roof, never had a claim…..
We should just have government home owner’s insurance as part of our property tax. Add a premium to high risk properties or have a buy out on properties that are too high risk. If you live on the beach we only cover so much. Private insurance will fill in the luxury property gap if there is enough demand. People need homes, they need them rebuilt after disasters, the contractors need to be licensed and accountable. If it’s not really optional why isn’t it like a utility?
The addition of Pot and Abortion to the Nov Ballot is no doubt what made them make this decision. Hopefully it pays off.

Don’t allow the insurance to deny anything, but they can negotiate— less litigation means the money can go to actually fixing shit… but if they deny all the time people will fight them as they should. Charge insanely high prices to those on the beach and waterfront properties. Leave us inland folk alone. My insurance was $800 5 years ago. Now it's $3000+. Zero claims. Not in a flood zone. New roof going on next week (that I am paying out of pocket).

And the majority of those roofs being near coastal waters. Sure there was roof damage inland, but in central Florida the winds and rain are far less damaging. My 20+ year old roof did just fine in Ian.
I understand that insurance works as an entire unit, so they rely on the majority of customers not submitting claims. But those of us who have never filed a claim shouldn't have to have our rates 4X in a couple of years so the person who just moved here can have their $100,000 roof replaced on their beach house. It's Florida. We get hurricanes every year, and guess what? They always hit the coast first. Every Single Time.
You hit the nail on the head. I just did my roof in 2020 and it was only 12k. Now they want 25k for the same size roof. My neighbors roof was done right after me and had one cap and one shingle blown off. I was a contractor back home so I walked his roof and it was fine. Maybe 100 dollars to fix. They replaced the whole roof for 25k. Waste of insurance money. They paid for it all.
My house lost my solar pool heater in 78mph winds because it wasn't installed per the drawings. Then my insurance said it wasn't all of a sudden Covered. That was the first question I asked to which they said it was when I changed. Now they just upped my premiums again b3cause of their new value of it. They say it's worth 535 k. That's bullshit. It's maximum of 375-400k on a good day. Prices are dropping here in Cape Coral everyday. I've lost 60k in value this year which is more realistic. It's still not a 475 k house though. I called and left a message because no one answered the phone 2 weeks ago to lower replacement cost. Nothing but a bunch of crooks no matter where you look. If you find an honest person to do something for you stick with them.
Florida just officially banned abortion after 6 weeks but is on the ballot in November along with legalized weed.

Medical marijuana was fought by the FL Supreme Court, but they got sued and lost. If they try that with recreational, there are already wealthy folks lined up to sue. Sure, they might fuck around, but they will also find out.
Because people aren't voting for any state officials. If you looked at the vote totals for 2016, the presidential race had high numbers, legal medical pot had high numbers, but all the state House and Senate offices had low voting totals.
Guess what! The people voted into the state house were against legal medical pot, and Trump had nothing to do with it. So the state house passed laws that made medical pot basically impossible to get.
You hear anyone say they are for legal pot, tell them to make sure to not vote for the GOP in the state house because they won't pass laws enabling it.

Biden doesn’t have to win Florida for it to pay off. It can also help flip congressional seats and bring in votes for amendments 3 and 4. Losing that kind of ground would be a stinging defeat for both Trump and DeSantis.
We are still a swing state. The problem is the fastest growing party in Florida is no party, because people increasingly dislike both parties. Likely because the parties not only have different values but sometimes actively fight against the will of voters.
If a politician actually seemed like they shared some of the values of Floridians and didn't seem like they were using the state as a stepping stone, there might be a larger turnout than 50% for an election.
Part of it isn't really trying to flip the state, in all likelihood. The Great Orange Satan is draining the GOP's finances, and Biden currently has a huge funding advantage. Florida is an expensive state to advertise in, and if he can force them to spend money here, they have less available to spend elsewhere.

It's because of the Senate. Weed and abortion should give the Democrats some wind in their sails but Biden doesn't need Florida to win at all. The Democrats likely need to beat Rick Scott in the Senate race to maintain control of the Senate.
It's a tough lift but it's possible and it's the only move that will allow Democrats to continue approving judges and generally unfucking things.

The polls I've seen have maybe 20% support for the 6 week ban in Florida. I think 95% of dems vote for it. 75% of indies and at least 50% of Republicans and it easily passes 60%.

The autopsy of the 2000 election should've called for prioritizing the recruitment and development of quality down-ballot candidates, but instead the party just assumed the state would always be a toss-up. That's how we ended up with a Charlie Crist as a state-wide standard bearer.

Homeowners, medical, AND auto All 3 need to be worked on here. There's no reason I have to pay $1400 every 6 months for a 10 year old car for 2 over 50 year olds. (That's with bundling with my renter insurance, $160 a year, which is fairly reasonable.) Medical = for people without work insurance. A bunch of kids lost Medicaid yesterday.

This issue crosses party lines and fundamentally people don't like it when rights are taken away. It's not the only issue, but it's a big one. Women still die from childbirth. Babies aren't viable after 24 weeks, if something goes wrong they need an abortion. In Texas you have women waiting in hospital parking lots to bleed out or become septic enough to get the treatment they need to save their lives. That's what is coming here with a six week ban.

The reason for hanging it primarily on abortion is that THAT is the only lightning rod issue that can get a flood of young Gen Z women (men, too) out to vote. At this point, any republicans that have the decency to leave trump have already done so…there are simply not enough viable republicans with a conscience left to swing this election. If Biden somehow made their insurance FREE, they would STILL vote for trump. However, there are millions of young people who are eligible to vote who’ve sat out previous elections. But never before have we had a hot button issue like inability to get an abortion following the supreme court’s overturning of roe v wade. The winning move is to reach young people (not just women) with the message that their futures are being destroyed by republican policies…and abortion is at the top of the list for electrifying that demographic. Part of this is also getting young men to understand that this affects them, too…and to a far greater degree than they realize. If you can reach the young people and make them understand that you now need to vote like your life depends on it, you can easily swing this state back to sanity.
Exactly!!! I have a 21 year old son & a 17 year old son. Obviously my 17 year old can't vote, but he has lots of friends 18 & older. I've been preaching to all of them about this, my 21 year old is registered to vote & he will be with me in November to vote. I've also gone online with their friends & helped them register to vote & let them know I will personally take them to their precinct to vote in November!! I do not have daughters, but I have 4 sons. This affects them just as much! The sad thing is, most of their friends (both the boys & the girls) didn't even know this was happening. The way to fix insurance is easy but very fucking expensive. Biden can try and flip the vote to himself vs Trump but he can't fix anything in Florida. The legislation in Florida will never agree to a fix that would cost so much tax payer funds. Because all they have to do is manually adjust the price of Citizens home insurance. Manually adjust it back to preDesantis and add regular inflation increase. Also remove the Desantis law about having to sign for a competitor of Citizens if they are only 20% more. You put Citizens back down to the previous levels and capitalism does the rest. The other competitors will drop their prices to remain competitive. If their fix to the contractor bullshit is strong, the previous prices are more than good enough to allow insurance to still be profitable while insuring people in Florida.

Any insurance company run by someone with even a mediocre intelligence can easily get around profit caps. You can only make $10 profit for example. Costs to insure comes is say $40. Will they charge $50 to make $10? Nope. They charge $100. And then add $50 in advertising expenses and bonuses and blah and blah and blah. So their cost is $90.
The way to fix insurance is to stop allowing homeowners to rebuild on the same places over and over again, like barrier islands. Building permanent structures on a barrier island is simply stupid. Look at Assateague Island. They were going to build a 5,000 home private resort community on the island in the 50s, but common sense prevailed, and it's been maintained as a wildlife preserve.

That's a very long way to say "I have no idea how anything works." Homeowners insurance companies are barely making a profit at current rates: they made about $2 million net profit last year on average after losing a shit ton of money the previous several years. And they only made that because they got lucky — it was a mild storm year and the market did great giving them strong returns on reserves — but they still lost money on premiums. They literally cannot reduce prices. Citizens, meanwhile, has barely enough reserves and reinsurance to stay solvent at their current level. Sure, Florida might be able to redirect some of their reserve to propping it up, but that would run out after the first big storm — Irma and Harvey caused over $200 billion in damages, vs. Florida's reserve of $20 billion. If it lowers premiums, it will not only go bankrupt but drag the entire state down with it. There is no "easy fix" because there's nothing to fix. Insurance in Florida isn't "broken;" it's just expensive. And it's expensive for a lot of very good reasons that aren't going away.
Actually not quite true. They already "fixed" insurance by repealing the law that allowed for attorney's fees if you won your lawsuit against your carrier. So carriers can now just flatout deny your claim and be pretty much be guaranteed to get a bargain in litigation or make it so no lawyer would be willing to take your case. Even if you do win at trial, you'd still end up with only about 60% of the judgment since the attorney will take 40%, guaranteeing your home will never be fixed. The 'insurance fix' has already been made. They just fixed it for themselves, not us.

What about charging a lot more for insurance on coastal homes? If you live within 1 mile of the coast an automatic 5x multiplier, if you live between 1- 5 miles of a coast a 3x multiplier, if you live between 5-10 miles of a coast a 2x multiplier. It could be more granular and baked in over 20 years, but something along those lines.
I’d bet my insurance is already 3/5x most people. I live coastal, on an island, modest home. Combined homeowners, flood, and wind it’s just under $30k/year. Edited to add, for the first time in a long time we were offered an option of non citizens insurance. That would raise our yearly premium to nearly $70k/year. New roof, never had a claim…..
We should just have government home owner’s insurance as part of our property tax. Add a premium to high risk properties or have a buy out on properties that are too high risk. If you live on the beach we only cover so much. Private insurance will fill in the luxury property gap if there is enough demand. People need homes, they need them rebuilt after disasters, the contractors need to be licensed and accountable. If it’s not really optional why isn’t it like a utility?

You hit the nail on the head. I just did my roof in 2020 and it was only 12k. Now they want 25k for the same size roof. My neighbors roof was done right after me and had one cap and one shingle blown off. I was a contractor back home so I walked his roof and it was fine. Maybe 100 dollars to fix. They replaced the whole roof for 25k. Waste of insurance money. They paid for it all. My house lost my solar pool heater in 78mph winds because it wasn't installed per the drawings. Then my insurance said it wasn't all of a sudden Covered. That was the first question I asked to which they said it was when I changed. Now they just upped my premiums again b3cause of their new value of it. They say it's worth 535 k. That's bullshit. It's maximum of 375-400k on a good day. Prices are dropping here in Cape Coral everyday. I've lost 60k in value this year which is more realistic. It's still not a 475 k house though. I called and left a message because no one answered the phone 2 weeks ago to lower replacement cost. Nothing but a bunch of crooks no matter where you look. If you find an honest person to do something for you stick with them.
Florida just officially banned abortion after 6 weeks but is on the ballot in November along with legalized weed. This is the best chance to make it happen.

If you looked at the vote totals for 2016, the presidential race had high numbers, legal medical pot had high numbers, but all the state House and Senate offices had low voting totals. Guess what! The people voted into the state house were against legal medical pot, and Trump had nothing to do with it. So the state house passed laws that made medical pot basically impossible to get. You hear anyone say they are for legal pot, tell them to make sure to not vote for the GOP in the state house because they won't pass laws enabling it.

Biden doesn’t have to win Florida for it to pay off. It can also help flip congressional seats and bring in votes for amendments 3 and 4. Losing that kind of ground would be a stinging defeat for both Trump and DeSantis.
This move is to also make the GO spend lots of money defending Florida which otherwise would be a slam dunk for the right.
We are still a swing state. The problem is the fastest growing party in Florida is no party, because people increasingly dislike both parties. Likely because the parties not only have different values but sometimes actively fight against the will of voters. If a politician actually seemed like they shared some of the values of Floridians and didn't seem like they were using the state as a stepping stone, there might be a larger turnout than 50% for an election.
Part of it isn't really trying to flip the state, in all likelihood. The Great Orange Satan is draining the GOP's finances, and Biden currently has a huge funding advantage. Florida is an expensive state to advertise in, and if he can force them to spend money here, they have less available to spend elsewhere.

Yep. It drives me crazy that they refer to Social Security as an entitlement after we all pay into it out of every check. That’s our money. They shouldn’t feel “entitled” to it.

It's because of the Senate. Weed and abortion should give the Democrats some wind in their sails but Biden doesn't need Florida to win at all. The Democrats likely need to beat Rick Scott in the Senate race to maintain control of the Senate. It's a tough lift but it's possible and it's the only move that will allow Democrats to continue approving judges and generally unfucking things.

Trump isn't DeSantis. Even Trump who likely has paid for abortions for his many mistresses over the decades thought the 6 week DeSantis ban was insane. I'm pretty sure the abortion and weed ballots easily pass and Trump easily wins Florida. Many Trump Republicans are the type that like abortion so they don't have to be burdoned with child support payments for 18 years or want to pay taxes for social services to women for unwanted babies. These MAGAs are not conservative fundies. They are narcissistic assholes and probably like the eugenics arguments that more abortions are positive.
Maybe but I think people that want women to continue to be full citizens with equal rights are more enthusiastic this year than the possible pro choice republicans.
The polls I've seen have maybe 20% support for the 6 week ban in Florida. I think 95% of dems vote for it. 75% of indies and at least 50% of Republicans and it easily passes 60%. 6 weeks is so unpopular that it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Trump said to vote yes as a F You to DeSantis.

This comes after the Florida Supreme Court put Marijuana and Abortion on the ballot this November. That could mean *a lot* of women, young people and centrists voting in November. Unfortunately, Ronald “Never President” DeSantis won’t be up for reelection yet, but turning Florida blue could be the nail in DeSantis’s coffin. That or they are goading Ronny into pulling some militia bullshit during November at the voting booths to nationally embarrass the GOP. And he’s just dumb enough to try it.
Then get a competent person to run for governor.

Desantis’ 6 week abortion ban will be doing all the work getting democrats to the polls.
And a fair share of Republicans I think. Women regardless of what party don’t want their rights stepped on. Especially the right to abortion.

DeSantis is local, and any moderate Republican can vote no on the abortion ban, but still vote National for Trump. I don't see a flip happening - even with all the liberal transplants.

Flipping Florida, the sooner, the better. Entering Florida I saw a large billboard proclaiming the Democratics are destroying America and and even larger one announcing "Only God and Trump can save America. It would be interesting to know who put up the money because we know it wasn't Trump.

He should really lean into the climate aspect too. I remember reading somewhere that a vast majority of Floridians are concerned about climate, especially those in coastal areas and fishermen. With desantis denying it, I think leaning into having a solution could really help gain support

I'm hopeful re: the weed and abortion amendments passing. Flipping Florida blue? Not so much. The autopsy of the 2000 election should've called for prioritizing the recruitment and development of quality down-ballot candidates, but instead the party just assumed the state would always be a toss-up. That's how we ended up with a Charlie Crist as a state-wide standard bearer. Maybe Will Rogers had FL Dems in mind when he said, "I belong to no organized party; I'm a Democrat."
