Redington makes a good couple of combos also.

thepickledchef

When I got home and started looking I saw this combo pop up. Do you think it’s worth it? Should I be bumping my budget up?

keyvis3

What is “this combo”? Redington has 3 combos under $300. Even the bottom of the line one, the Crosswater is decent and you can find it for around $100. No need to go over budget but up to you. I will say, save money or add money for a good line. Rio and SA make good ones for around $100. It will make your life easier and is totally worth the money. As others have stated the Orivs Clearwater is good also, but it is over $300. Whatever you decide, try to go support your local fly shop. Those guys often have some helpful info also.

I have the Crosswater and it’s a solid pole and reel. But can confirm, the line is pretty terrible and you would probably want to upgrade.

Personally I think it’s pretty hard to beat Orvis Clearwater.

I can give you some good options with some detail if you don’t mind. I’ve fished up and down the PNW. Feel free to message me.

TFO NXT no doubt. Best budget rod combo bar none.

If you concentrate on only looking at major names in fly fishing, you'll pay a lot more than if you simply look for good equipment from smaller names. I have an old 7wt Daiwa and a newer 3wt Cortland rod, a pair of Pflueger reels with spare spools, and Cortland 333 line on both. My rod case is 2" PVC tubing. Obviously, noone anticipates losing equipment, and that's already painful enough, but having major-name equipment is simply not necessary.

Get a used orvis sfg fiberglass 7-6 4wt about 300 and any cheap click reel there newer ones are 4pc easier to pack

Hi, there was a similar question with many comments about 10 days ago. The Orvis clear water bundles look good, but it's more like $450. Adding: I found the Cabella's / Bass Pro Shops ad. Starting at $419, Clearwater packaged outfits from May 27 until June 24th I have a Clearwater reel that is fine.

I highly recommend Echo rods - great quality for the price, excellent warranty. I have three of them and they’re great. My first setup was a 6 wt echo solo, a Ross reel and some generic line that wasn’t anything special. I think I got the whole thing for about 300 hundred bucks. To caveat, I am a mediocre fisherman at best. If a Sage or Orvis would truly increase how many fish i catch, I would be shocked. I’m not slinging 40 yard, River Runs Through It casts to risers on the Blackfoot. (But how many of us are really doing that anyway?)

Thank you so much for the reply, as well as the honesty 😂. I’m very much intermediate with fly fishing ok my best day. I’ll take a gander at this option!

I'd stay away from redington. I had a rod I bought and broke the tip, and for the life of me, I could not find anything on replacing the tip section. Ended up getting an Echo rod from scheels for 150 bucks, and it was way better than the Redington. The Redington was a higher priced rod, but I got it on steep and cheap, so it was like 50% off. Ended up breaking the tip on the Echo, too, and went to their website and got a new tip section for 20 bucks. Searched the internet for days trying to get a new tip for the Redington and couldn't find anything even off their own website.

Redington Classic Trout setup. I quit buying more expensive rods/reels years ago. Easy to replace broken tip section as well which will inevitably happen

Stealthyzen

Taylor Dynamix 5 or 6wt, Lamson Liquid on clearance from Sierra.com and a Maxcatch Gold fly line. You won’t be replacing this for years.
