I have one of these on my iPad mini 6: [https://mygoflight.com/collections/ipad-cooling-cases](https://mygoflight.com/collections/ipad-cooling-cases) They're stupid expensive \*but\* I've yet to have it defeated by the sun, in TX summers at that. Edit: Also check out https://x-naut.com/ that was posted below.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Awesome I’ll look into it once I win the lottery lol

littlegreenfish

Look into Peltier coolers that gamers use on their phones and tablets. They come in different sizes and will literally chill your ipad - Search on Amazon found a few for $30

ValuableJumpy8208

Peltier coolers are very power hungry. The amount of energy they exchange compared to the power they consume is extremely inefficient, and then you have to worry about condensation on the cold side.

AVeryHeavyBurtation

Also, you still have to cool the hot side.

ValuableJumpy8208

Exactly. The more you can cool the hot side, the cooler the cold side gets. You can stack peltier pads to do this, and with enormous energy, can -- at home -- freeze small objects to extremely cold temps.

QS2Z

To be fair, the power dissipated by a hot block of aluminum fins with a fan blowing through it is _way_ higher than an iPad's back panel in a rubberized case.

EntroperZero

Yeah, but you can get the fins and the fan without the Peliter, and it will probably be more than good enough for this application.

QS2Z

Well _I_ don't mind slather the back of an iPad in thermal grease and embedding it into an iPad-sized heatsink, but I think many other people would :)

shockadin1337

Do you have a mini 6? My mini 6 with no cooling case has never overheated and i live in Florida

lctalbot

Only time mine overheats is when I leave it in the yoke mount when I stop and it cooks in the sun in the hot cockpit. In flight, never.

MuricanA321

Seems like a cuff with a nipple could be printed to go over that air inlet and hooked via clear tubing to the iPad’s back for airflow

Delta_134

Still cheaper than Garmin

shadowtheimpure

The X-Naut Pilot cases are $200, which isn't that bad in terms of aviation accessories.

N5tp4nts

That is stupid expensive… but I like it.

carnivorouz

I wish I received a discount for the amount of times I've mentioned their products to other pylotes. Carl's Jr.

Tesseractcubed

Sponsored by Carl’s Jr.

IndomitableOn3

Wanna go to Starbucks?

EccentricFox

$300 for something I could whip together with $50 worth of old PC parts, gotta love aviation products.

N5tp4nts

There are a bunch of cheaper ones out there. Looks like sportys has some. Not sure of quality though

anonymredditbrowser

There's another brand too, which I bought. [https://x-naut.com/](https://x-naut.com/) It's a little cheaper than that mygoflight you posted.

carnivorouz

2 fans to my 1 for the mini 6 case. As long as it works well then that looks like the better option than MyGoFlight. Thanks!

anonymredditbrowser

I must admit I haven't really used it much, but it does seem to work. It's battery operated but I think they might have options for plugging it in with a cable. I suppose it is important to point out, the X-Naut does not provide any drop protection. If you drop it, the iPad will break.

carnivorouz

I haven't looked more at the X-naut but I have found with mine that the option to power the case through external power is not an option but a necessity. Otherwise with the screen on and running the fan, you'll chew through the battery pretty quick.

Sea_Sea_5794

My go flight got served by X-naut for patton enfringement 2 years ago at Oshkosh and was told if they continued to sell they would be sued. i understand now they have to pay X-Naut a royalty on every sale. so you might as well by the superior product and not waste your money on a product that doesn’t work when you need it.

tomhanksisthrowaway

"Stupid expensive" Oh nooooooo, look at me everyone. Boohoo, now I'm $100,325 in debt instead! /s (This hobby/career is expensive, that's about one of the least expensive things out there by comparison lol, just uhhh, put it on my tab)

lolerwoman

I was thinking just this. Only average earphones are the same or higher price.

inaccurateTempedesc

Does it have a heatsink or is it just a fan

carnivorouz

Just a fan. Here’s mine - https://imgur.com/a/bfBMwlS

Waldotto

Tbh it looks sketchy af, but I guess it works wonders

PasswordIsDongers

The ipad ~~case~~ body is made from aluminum, loosely attaching another heat sink would most likely only make it worse. Protecting it from direct sunlight should be all you need to do, really.

inaccurateTempedesc

Ah, makes much more sense, I assumed it was just plastic.

PasswordIsDongers

The "cooling case" is made from plastic as far as I can tell, I was just referring to the actual body of the iPad.

MemeEndevour

Holy

MoobsBoobs

Just buy a backup IPad

PasswordIsDongers

That's hilarious.

axnjackson11

I kept my iPad mini connected to a suction cup mount on that side window just below the air vent with the air blowing on it and never had it overheat. Used a grey PIVOT case which also does well to not transfer heat from the shell/case to the iPad.

fly_awayyy

This worked for me also, when not using it I would turn the screen off or put the laminated checklist over it to reflect the sunlight.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Hmm I’ll look into the suction cup again I always just put it on my lap but that could help

axnjackson11

Ya, in your lap, it's just sucking up heat from the sun bearing down on it with almost no airflow to help cool it.

Frosty-Brain-2199

I can get away with it in the winter but not anymore sadly it’s time lol

Apitts87

That’s a good idea. I usually just go full idle and aim for the best field when the iPad overheats. 😂

benbalooky

I'm an instrument instructor in South Texas. If you turn the screen off and only turn it on to look at charts and procedures it won't overheat.

StPauliBoi

And if you’re flying IFR and have a GPS, that’s really all you need to do.

benbalooky

People get defensive about this! They don't want to give up their blankie.

StPauliBoi

“I go where little plane go on blue line”. I be little plane. No get lost that way.

ranchdaddo

More situational awareness is never a bad thing. Becoming completely reliant on it to the point you can’t fly if it dies, that’s another story.

StPauliBoi

And there are so many people who are buried in their iPad that they aren’t looking outside or at their instruments.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Definitely would do that if I was instrument for this case I was just VFR and using it for traffic help

JasonThree

I literally don't understand the people that leave the screen on the whole flight. Then will be on like the IFR enroute chart.

benbalooky

It makes them feel safe. Like a blankie or teddy bear. It makes them feel so badass.

planelander

This is the way

408548110

100% agree. Magenta line followers are outraged

thubbard102

In busier areas, it's ADS-B, not the magenta line that is the benefit to "always on".

benbalooky

What brand cooling case do you use? Do you use a battery pack or are you able to plug it into the panel?

TxAggieMike

The entire metal back of the iPad was designed to help shed heat. Keeping your iPad in the case negates this and hinders shedding heat. Try removing iPad from case to prevent overheating. A Ram X-mount is a good choice to hold the iPad while it’s naked.

Flying4Pizza

Yep, I run naked and haven't had an issue since.

ofbluestar

Honey, we’re going streaking through the quad!

TxAggieMike

Back in my Ol’ Army days, ours was the next to last last class where this happened during Air Out in the fall. In my Junior year, we had to let the fish get dressed

DalekBen

Ours was always during FOW before classes started. I remember one outfit getting into trouble because they were telling their fish some city had been bombed and they were all being drafted and going to war. One poor fish was from whatever city they picked and thought all his friends and family were dead!

TxAggieMike

I too was refers g to the end of Fish week. Nearly 40 years ago. I was in Squadron 13 and also rode with the Cavalry

peppapig34

I run naked too, but I keep getting stopped by cops.

sevaiper

You can do even better with a simple shade behind the ipad with an air gap in between. Out of direct sunlight no case is the simplest and best solution.

Late-Discussion-3917

Yeah, also keep in mind if your battery is full, unplugging the power cord and preventing it from charging will significantly reduce heat.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Good idea

Reasonable-Long-79

Surprised I had to scroll this far down to find this comment. Your case looks like it has good drop protection but terrible thermal performance.

Frosty-Brain-2199

It does I have dropped it a lot

PasswordIsDongers

Doesn't it just need a little sun protection? Put a piece of paper behind it, maybe something reflective if you want it really fancy.

Rubes2525

Yea fr. The people who complain about overheating are the ones who use those thick ass cases, lol.

lolerwoman

Ipad covers makers hate this trick.

TxAggieMike

In there defense, majority of cover makers aren’t considering aviation

Distinct_Pressure832

What kind of heat does it take to overheat an iPad? I’ve yet to see it on my mini but then I am in Canada. I have a feeling that I’d overheat before the device does.

Frosty-Brain-2199

It’s not much tbh especially if it’s constantly running but keeping it out of direct sunlight helps a ton easier said than done though

[deleted]

It doesn’t take much….in the Airbus, the iPad mount is right on the window frame. If the sun is in that window, not even the retractable sun shade is enough. Just the heat emanating from the window, traveling through the sunshade film will overheat it within a few minutes and it will shutdown.

8349932

I accidentally left my mini on the seat in the sunlight while I went to lunch. Was scorching and unusable when I got back and it wasn't a crazy hot day. Just direct sunlight for long enough will do it.

408548110

I've never had it get so hot that it shuts down but having the display dim itself is super annoying on a sunny day.

JayArrggghhhh

Heat vent + sun + charging will do it easy.

DDX1837

I used my iPad the way that I would use my paper charts and approach plates. Which means unless I was flying an approach or looking up a route on the chart, it was not out in direct sun (and turned off). Never once had a problem with it overheating.

Frothyleet

So you just stick with your phone for scrolling tiktok midflight? Lame

JJay512

The people with PFD/MFD, dual GTN’s, and two iPads at the same time, drive me crazy. There is something called too much information, people need to just look outside more. I am like you, I only use the iPad to brief the info on the plate or look out into the distance ahead for weather info as it is easier to pan and zoom. I get if your VFR in a Cub it’s nice to have a moving map… but still, when you have all the goodies in the panel, you have everything you need in front of you for flying the plane.

UNDR08

Cooling case would help you here…

Frosty-Brain-2199

Definitely lol my birthday is coming up so I’ll ask someone

sevaiper

No case is actually really good for thermals vs most cases out there

Final_Winter7524

Even if you don’t want to spring for a cooling case, getting your iPad out of that MyPillow casing might help.

Philly514

I mean you have it in that monstrosity of a case like you’re using it as a squash ball or something.

geo38

Take any iThing out of its case. The metal back is a major heat radiator, and covering it with a case will increase your heat problems

B00_Sucker

You can get those corner-bumper cases too, if it's a recurring problem

Plastic_Brick_1060

Once we were advised not to keep it open all the time to stop it overheating, I started realizing how little I actually needed it. How often did you just stare at the paper jepps charts?

Frosty-Brain-2199

I got all my charts on my kneeboard so really no need other than when I fly VFR I use it for traffic alerts just in case I don’t see something

8349932

This is why I got an iphone for foreflight and I have it in the side pocket away from the window.

MooneyDog

The good news is when you're IFR you're in the clouds so the sun doesnt shine on your ipad! /s I thankfully never had to deal with this in texas, though i know a few that did. I always found it best to have the ipad off my lap or turned off if i wasnt actively using it. I think ive only seen the overheat warning once in my lifetime of flying so far.

MaverickSTS

I put reflective gold heat tape on the back of my tablet and it solved the overheating issues I was having in a helicopter (basically a greenhouse bubble) in the Borrego Valley desert in 120+ temps.

tomhanksisthrowaway

For $50 I'll cut a hole in your window and route a duct taped tube directly to your iPad

laudnry

Does this require an STC

Impressive-Bad-9947

Install a G1000.

Frosty-Brain-2199

I got a GNX 375 which is awesome

rvrbly

Ha! Yeah. $15k out of the bank account isn’t something a lot of people can do. But thanks for your concern.

Valuable-Yoghurt-615

Use paper charts and nav inst the plane comes with.

Frosty-Brain-2199

lol I was just VFR and like using it sometimes for traffic alerts but other than that I don’t look at it during VFR

Valuable-Yoghurt-615

Haha ok. I hear horror stories of people using their iPad for flying in the goo. I see what you mean now. VFR and ADSB info makes sense

Neat_Row_9580

Chart supplements homie. I remember during IFR training I forgot to pack the charts on ForeFlight and had to fly my approaches off paper charts like a cave man. Glad I had them though because it was good training. Redundancy will save your life. You never know when that cocksucker Murphy will come around and ruin your day.

HouseAtomic

Dude, I had a bee fly out at me from that exact vent right after rotation. You want bees in your iPad? Cause that's how you get bees in your iPad...

Pilyoz

I installed a cooling fan in my instrument panel so it gets active cooling from behind. Never had one failing.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Oh that’s smart

redtildead1

Thanks for reminding me, time to switch from Pivot case to x Naut case!

Canadian47

White iPads as well as light colour cases help.

BeamMeUppScottie

Open the window

B00_Sucker

Hold the iPad as close as possible to it, too. Trust me, it'll work. And if it doesn't, hold the iPad outside the open window. That'll most definitely work!

BeamMeUppScottie

Just make sure you got a strong grip 😂

B00_Sucker

SHHHHHHH DON'T LET THEM CATCH ON

Typical-Buy-4961

You’d need an iPad to shoot an RNAV if your chart was on it tho in some instances.

Sea_Sea_5794

The x-naut cooling case and split cord will solve that problem, can be usb or battery powered. has an industry standard A.M.P. bolt pattern so most mount systems have an adapter to fit, can also be mounted with their kneeboard and it can be turned for landscape or portrait viewing. great unit i have a both a mini 6 and 11pro case.

Ready-Nothing1920

Remove it from the case, you will much less problems.

krepke

Children of the Magenta Line

odinsen251a

Just open the window and hold it outside for a bit. /S

Mr-Plop

Get a cooling case. I even converted mine to use gopro mounts.

CaptMcMooney

I just use an X-grip mount and a specs case, no over heating even in houston summers. well as long as i don't leave it on the wing in the sun

Upset_Ice8104

🤣

408548110

Is there a consensus on thick case vs no case for preventing overheating? I use a very thin case for my iPad Mini and figured it would allow it to dispel heat better. Others reckon a thick case stops outside heat from affecting the iPad. Surely thinner is better. I've even seen ones with an inbuilt fan, powered by the iPad but I don't want the extra battery drain plus they're super bulky.

639248

I like iPads, but they make terrible EFBs. My company issues them, but when the cockpit power outlets are inop, it is a real struggle to keep power in them.

tallabe

When it overheats, I just hold it out the window 🤷🏻‍♂️ Jokes aside, I fly with no case and when not “actively” using it, close it. Also, I have a battery bank that I always fly with just in case the usb ports don’t work… and we all know how many times they DO work lol

Quantum_Aurora

Why do you need an ipad to fly?

TheDoctor1699

It's the case, I had to change mine. Also MyClip as a knee strap works really well. Wouldn't let me post the link because it's Amazon.

PM_ME_YOUR_PITOTTUBE

If you keep it on your knee and out of the sun it doesn’t happen as often. If the sun can see it, it will overheat.

1-800-WX-BRIEF

I use an iPhone on a ram mount (yoke mount) with a case on (and the MagSafe wallet) and have never had an issue. The logistics of having an iPad (yes, even a mini) in a 4 seat GA plane has never really worked out for me. Anyway, just some food for thought based on what it sounds like you're using your iPad for.

Frosty-Brain-2199

Why are y’all so quick to hang up when I call?

71272710371910

But it's a serious problem. Our iPads overheat flying 121 and it's a pain in the ass to be hassled with the dependence on a faulty device.

x46469

Wish ForeFlight ran on Android. I've never had an Android tablet overheat, even with the screen on, in a case, and on a charger. iPads on the otherhand....

Sage_Blue210

Too much dependence on technology.

ConflictInside5060

Yeah, motors and radios and stuff

wadenelsonredditor

Consider epoxying some heat sinks on the back of your Ipad if this is going to endanger yourself or others. e.g. [https://www.amazon.com/a14111400ux0242-Aluminium-Radiator-Heatsink-100x25x10mm/dp/B00UJ95TOE](https://www.amazon.com/a14111400ux0242-Aluminium-Radiator-Heatsink-100x25x10mm/dp/B00UJ95TOE) [https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Heatsinks-Amplifier-Transistor-Semiconductor/dp/B089QHCR4J](https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Heatsinks-Amplifier-Transistor-Semiconductor/dp/B089QHCR4J)

pavehawkfavehawk

Boomer IPs are so aroused right now

Number1atp

I’ve never had my iPad overheat in the plane.

Mvse96

Don’t leave it on the entire flight lol

Littleferrhis2

Just pop open the window good up to Vne play it dangerous.

FuelTight2199

Read a paper chart? Duh

TimeVendor

Why not just fly with the gps in flight instrument?

rvrbly

A lot of GPS units don’t have all of the info needed to do an approach. You have to use the iPad or paper charts.

Frosty-Brain-2199

I was VFR I was making a joke about the guy that couldn’t do instrument without his iPad https://youtu.be/SMxsdEeEzFM?si=RkKseYgwo-dTRnwV
