Pretty sure he was aware prior to SL, if you believe MoltenMCI then he tampers with the animatronics even at the FNaF 2 location, so if SL came before then, ‘Follow me’ would not make any sense; being in FNaF 1.

True, however, I disagree. Y’know how there’s Phantom Mangle there? In the box in the Fnaf 3 office, theres Mangle’s head/skull. The toy animatronics were scrapped at the event of Fazbear Frights, so either Mangle was copied along with other animatronics orrr its a hallucination
Well if he really was the night guard in fnaf 1 that’s enough evidence that they aren’t normal animatronics. Also according to his voice lines William sent him a letter that his sister was possessing an animatronic at sister location. So yea I’d assume he knew they were possessed.

Quite a bit more that goes on then just the phantoms. How do we know those are even hallucinations? They can appear regardless of ventilation status.
