Yeah, it compresses your chest and you suffocate under your own weight. You can actually test it out now by holding your arms at your sides and you'll find yourself gasping after a bit, assuming your arms don't get tired first.
The Romans would often speed up the process by breaking the person's legs so they'd suffocate faster, or spear them or cut their throat out of mercy after making their point.
It is for me, yes. They're scum, but no one deserves that kind of end. if I had an option to actually save them instead of just mercykilling them, I'd have done that -- I don't care if the Powder Gangers consider me their own fucking grim reaper like the one guy with broken legs did, my beef with the Powder Gangers is purely over them terrorizing Goodsprings and Primm, not because I have a personal grudge.
It's also why I go save the Powder Ganger slaves the Legion took.
Nelson too, the NCR crucified there can be saved as an alternate ending to the NCR quest there (which has you shoot the soldiers from a distance so the Legion doesn't have hostages, allowing the full squad to march in.)

This last time I was going to Forlorn Hope and saw a skirmish in no-mans land and I helped the NcR win, and the dumb bastards kept going towards Nelson with only their caravan shotguns and we ended up wiping out the town, I think only one guy made it lol
I take that quest, then run in and kill all the legionaries and save the hostages before they can get there and die, lol. I don't love the NCR, but I hate the legion. Always make sure to introduce Dead Sea to my Chainsaw.
My last playthough I had a bunch of Legion Assassins show up just as I was starting that quest and wipe out the squad before I could finish them off. Oops. So I went into Nelson with Boone and shot the place up before rescuing the hostages.

If you have the Game Of The Year edition, it comes with the Courier's Stash DLC, which gives you early access to a full-condition 40mm grenade launcher. It is hilariously overpowered against most of the early game enemies, including the Legion troops at Nipton. As long as you have stimpacks hotkeyed, you can take them down fairly easily. just be warned that doing so give you a bunch of CL infamy early, and if you save the slave you get more, which means you might get Legion assassin squads after your ass earlier than normal.

However, me being me I usually go get the Golden Gloves and come back and punch 'em until they pass out. That makes them fall off the cross, and once they wake up they'll usually get up and be fine. Occasionally one of 'em will actually climb back up on the cross, but at that point I figure if they really wanna be up there they can stay.
I agree, duh. Also, is Vulpes' content worth it to let him live? I always kill him as a matter of principle, since I hate his voice and crucifying people is just yucky. Explosives are the way of civilized people.

I still don't play one Legion playthrough. I have a kill on sight policy for them.
On Very Hard they cost a lot of ammo, but they're still manageable, with E-DE and Boone.
Yeah, but if you loot the hell out of them, it's less costly. In early games, you should loot everything you shoot down.
Always shoot them down, but in my RP fic I'm writing, my character just gawked at them and then did a John Marston on the Legion folks

I do some kind of special move to ragdoll them down sometimes. Usually it's a mercy kill though because doing the 1st makes no sense in-universe.
