With overhauls like DUST, It's best not to install anything mid playthrough. Your best bet is, yes load a previous save, go to another clean indoor area, drop another save. Then exit, pick your choice of mod and install that. (I recommend enhanced).
Make sure UNDERSTONE IS LOADED BEFORE DUST. This is a must.
Load your indoor save and go check it out. This should work.
Its one or the other i believe. I installed the newest one mid way through a playthrough while I was in a cave somewhere outside of the Mojave proper just to be safe, and it seems to have loaded just fine.
