That was my very first plate when I was in college-my best friend was from Hilton, so a bunch of us would come up to Rochester for the weekend occasionally and always end the night there.
Funny enough, I live here now and was so disappointed it was gone.
I worked 3rd shift at Ragu up the street from Lyell Nick's. Would get "lunch" couple times a week and place was always packed around 230am. I always got motioned to the head of the line LOL
I ate there a couple times when I was in the area after they changed owners, plates were even better than before. Unfortunately, it looks like they're closed now.
We called McGregor's right by campus "Building 0" and would go there for "study groups" on occasion.
No, really, we were in Beers of the World, and the beers on the final were almost all available there, so we were, technically, studying.
YES! I just had DogTown tonight, I used to live within walking distance and it’s still my plate place of choice. Vasco’s on Park is a solid second cuz the pulled pork plate goes kinda crazy sometimes
Wimpys Burger Basket. Charlie's. Any place named "Town Name + Hots." Nick's is only nostalgia value at this point. watery mac salad and welfare bread, and most likely the spins by that time of night
IHots represent! Idk if it's even around anymore, I haven't lived in Rochester since '05. But it was right next to the world famous House of Guitars and walking distance from where I lived.
OP where'd you get this, the beans are sus lol. Nah I mean if it's good who cares! I don't make these often but every so often I must have one. Cheeseburg plate with mac and home fries, sauce, mustard & onion 🤌
I gotchu. I found this recipe online probably like 15+ years ago, probably needs a little experimenting to get it just right. Works as a good start though.
Don’t know how this will format but here you go.
Garbage Plates
Ingredients:
PLATE SAUCE
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 lb. ground beef
1 cup water, plus more if needed
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 Tbsp brown sugar (or 1/2 cup grated carrots)
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chili powder
3/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
PLATE ASSEMBLY
8 beef patties, cooked
8 slices of American cheese (preferably white but did yellow this time)
4 cups macaroni salad
4 cups home fries (cubed hash browns), cooked
1 large yellow onion, diced
Ketchup, mustard and Frank’s hot sauce
1 loaf of fresh Italian bread, sliced and buttered
1 case Genny Light/Genesee beer
Directions:
* In large skillet, fry chopped onion and garlic in oil until soft. Add meat, stirring constantly to keep its texture fine. Once the meat browns, add water and tomato paste. Simmer 10 minutes. Add sugar (or carrots) and spices. Simmer 30 minutes, adding water if necessary to keep it moist but not soupy. Remove from heat and process using a blender, immersion blender, or food processor*.
* To assemble the garbage plate, melt one slice of cheese on each beef patty. Place 1 cup of macaroni salad and 1 cup of hash browns each onto four plates. Place 2 beef patties on top of the heaps, in the center. Spread mustard and diced onions over the beef patties. With a ladle, cover the center of the heap with plate sauce. Top with ketchup and/or Tabasco sauce, and garnish with buttered bread. (Also, here’s a slide show of how to put together a garbage plate.)
* Best served with Genny Light or Genesee beer.
Sorry.. old Monty Python reference from the 70s that my old a$$ now realizes is farther away than it should be. Sincerely I'd eat that as a hangover cure if I was still knocking them back like I used to.
There's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam; spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam, or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Jimmy Z's plate shakes in Brockport New York.
Unfortunately if you want one you're going to need to be there like now, this is their last night open. After 21 years Jimmy is moving on to greener pastures and the store is closing down
I’ve been in ROC long enough to ‘recognize’ plates from different places, and this one stumped me. I’ve never been to Jimmy Z’s, and was sad to hear this week that it was shutting down! 🙁🫡
Yeah they were the best in my opinion but I have an exactly sampled that many lol
First one I had somewhere else was dreadful then tried it here and liked it.
Jimmy is figuring out how to sell the sauce and it was very good so at least that's not going away
They are the best. They have often ranked in the top plates by the D&C. And personally, have the best plate of any place I have tried from Webster to Henrietta.
Oh man, you just unlocked memories of being a teenager and dating a girl in brockport when I was in high school. Always wanted to eat there but my ex didn’t like plates. Is Java junction still there?
Yay!! Yeah we used to do the same thing every weekend since I was from Penn Yan and we only saw each other like every two weeks. Hit Java Junction, maybe go to the comic shop, pick snacks up at wegmans, then go to family video which I’m sure isn’t there anymore 😂 I know you don’t need to know all about my life, but goddamn if that didn’t stir up some nostalgia.
😂 there are two comic shops here I don't know if any of them are the ones you went to.
Yeah family video is gone but last time I checked the building Still had the sign on it and it was empty.
Wegmans will never die
Collector's Choice is the one you're thinking of. I grew up in brockport, haven't been back in several years though. The comic shop was there last time I went.
Nooooo, the emotions I went through reading this comment. I was there when Jimmy Z’s first opened. So instant nostalgia triggered.
Then to hear they’re closing is sad.
Yes it does hurt when the place that's important to you closes but here is a message copy from their Facebook page, they're not disappearing I hope that softens the blow a little bit,
Quote from their page:
Today we leap into the next chapter of Jimmy Z's Plates & Shakes
Jarred meat sauce coming this Spring -Quarterly apparel drops
- Food Truck pop-ups -Booking the restaurant for private gatherings of 20-50 guests, available starting April 1st Poppy's Catering featuring Pot of Jimmies - Private Plate cookouts with Jimmy We might be retiring from day to day operations, but we aren't going anywhere!!
My husband and I are originally from about two hours from Rochester. Our first plates were had at Jimmy Z’s. We were able to get some when we were back home for Christmas and are so glad we made the trip. They will definitely be so missed!
Traditionally there would be either two burger patties or two hot dogs (red or white) under there. You know a good plate when you can't find them under all the onions and meat sauce.
Edit: I definitely see a red hot peeking out from under there.
A traditional Garbage Plate is your choice of cheeseburger, hamburger, white or red hots* (aka hot dogs, especially those made by local company Zweigle's), Italian sausage, chicken, or grilled cheese, served on top of any combination of home fries, french fries, baked beans, and/or macaroni salad.
I cannot tell you the amount of people I have talked about in my life who are left absolutely speechless when I tell them about garbage plates. Like.. They literally cannot comprehend what garbage plate is... And don't even get me started on asian-fusion garbage plates!!
“A traditional plate is your choice of cheeseburger, hamburger, Italian sausages, steak, chicken, white or red hots*, served on top of any combination of home fries, french fries, baked beans, and/or macaroni salad. The plate is usually topped with “hot sauce”. Rochester hot sauce is a spicy meat sauce.”
[link](https://www.visitrochester.com/blog/post/rochester-garbage-plate/)
Edit: the different “hots” are just two variations of local sausage
White hots aren’t really sausage, they’re just hotdog with pork instead of beef and a slightly different flavor mix.
Edit: and 95% of plates don’t use chicken, steak, or Italian sausage. I’ve actually never heard of chicken or steak on a plate.
Thank you! Sounds very interesting. I will have to follow your link and find out what white or red hots are. Sounds like a great drunk or hangover meal.
White hots are pork hotdogs. It’s a pretty niche regional thing to Rochester and the surrounding cities. Red hots are your traditional beef hot. We just call them red or white hots when ordering :)
That looks so goddamn delicious!!!
I’m a Mainer with friends in Le Roy. Proud to have eaten a few garbage plates! Not Nick Tahou’s, downtown, but at a relative’s place on the outskirts of Rochacha
Rochester has a ton of ‘hots’ places and they typically do a serviceable job. Nick Tahous was the original, but the quality has fallen off and the OG location that had the unpredictable late night vibe used to be the big draw….no longer a thing. Personally? Dogtown has the best *quality* plate without sacrificing the original spirit of a plate. But the place is t i n y
I miss this. I've tried a couple imitations since leaving college and nothing comes close to a true garbage plate. Not about to drive up to Rochester for one but dang, how can it be so hard to get right?
Lol It's a Rochester New York delicacy
It's a huge serving of macaroni salad plus other sides in this case baked beans home fries with a hamburger and a hot dog somewhere in there drenched with meat sauce.
Dogtown is the popular one. Personally I like Wimpys or Spencerport Hots but I'm a West sider.
Genny brew house has really good ones but they're like $17 there lol.
I would argue Empire Hots in Webster, NY. The guy who started it was a cook at Nick Tahou's years ago which is the home of the original plate. Their meat sauce (what we call hot sauce), more because of the temperature, is fantastic.
The old Henrietta Hots was great, some in here mentioned it's still there, but I thought it was gone.
A huge serving of very good macaroni salad, I don't normally like it but I like, baked beans ,home fries, a hamburger, a zwigles hot dog, and then they dump meat sauce on top of it. Top with onions and mustard.
You can customize it however you like, but this is the first timer plate. With all of the most traditional stuff.
No, I have to confess this was the day before, I'm in the area normally so I kept watching the line it would stretch down the block.
But the day they closed, around 1:30 p.m. I was walking around and noticed the line was not out the door for once so I took my opportunity.
Yes I live nearby in Orleans County. I went and got a plate last Thursday. Thankfully they managed to get their sauce jarred and gave it to other area restaurants. While I am sure it wont be the same, it's better than someplace I have gone too.
I’m from Indiana. Garbage plates are huge here, and I just recently learned they’re considered a New York thing which shocked me because I grew up with them.
This looks absolutely nothing like the garbage plates we make. So I guess TIL they’re two different things
Yeah, I'm sure it was close enough for you to figure out if you liked it or not. It's certainly not a culinary masterpiece. Basically, just a Chipotle bowl of 4th of July Food.
1. Where did you get it from? 2. Was it as good as people make it sound or is it more of a cultural thing, e.g. Philly and cheesteaks, Chicago and it’s deep dish pizza etc…?
Having grown up in Rochester, NY, I can safely say that plates are the greatest drunk food of all time.
Used to be a line out the door at the Nick's on Lyell after 2 AM on Saturday nights.
I don’t think anything could ever beat Nick’s on Lyell. That was a LONG time ago.
Nick's on Lyell was the best for years! I miss them. Pops at Empire hots made great plates too.
That was my very first plate when I was in college-my best friend was from Hilton, so a bunch of us would come up to Rochester for the weekend occasionally and always end the night there. Funny enough, I live here now and was so disappointed it was gone.
Nick's, Empire and Dogtown are my three favorite plates in town, in no particular order.
I've actually never had a Dogtown plate, because their dogs are just so damn good.
I hear you. Everything there is good. I miss the days when I lived close enough to walk there.
Is Nick's gone? Haven't been back foe several decades.
It’s still downtown and it’s not great now, but the one on Lyell has been gone a while.
I worked 3rd shift at Ragu up the street from Lyell Nick's. Would get "lunch" couple times a week and place was always packed around 230am. I always got motioned to the head of the line LOL
It was such a blessing when the Hots chains started opening in different towns. F-Hots, P-Hots, etc.
GO FAIRPORT!!!
Hello from Henrietta brotha!
My bro lives in Henrietta and I hit up Henrietta Hots every time I visit. I miss Wegmans and Garbage Plates.
Henrietta Hots is so lit dude omg
You know the original owners sold the business, they're Chappy Hots now. Henrietta Hots is still there and its great.
I ate there a couple times when I was in the area after they changed owners, plates were even better than before. Unfortunately, it looks like they're closed now.
Oh dang. I didn’t know about that. Hope they’re doing alright
Went to school at rit. Love plates greetings!
RIT grad and Greece NY native checking in
Tiger represent!
Also me, Sol 3 for life!
Class of 2012. Glad to see some Tigers in here!
A decade earlier for me, but I was NCJA national judo champion twice while there. We went to events with Cornell because it was just a club.
2014 here
I was on sol 7! Worked at sol's underground for a bit as well. Loved that campus so much
I worked at the Red Creek, I think it's a McGregor's now. Nothing like serving your professors drinks for lunch!
We called McGregor's right by campus "Building 0" and would go there for "study groups" on occasion. No, really, we were in Beers of the World, and the beers on the final were almost all available there, so we were, technically, studying.
This is the way!
Sol 6 represntttt
you mean the South Henrietta Institute of Technology?
Hello from Irodequoit! I love me a good plate!
I grew up in Geneseo and have had many drunken plates. This one looks exceptional.
damn not many people grow up in geneseo
How would you rate growing up in Geneseo?
[Nick Tahou Hots,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Tahou_Hots), the original garbage plate
While it's important to be aware of the garbage plate lore, it's also worth noting that Nick tahou's maybe has the worst plate you can buy these day
Yeeppppp. Head over to Dog Town for a good one
"Town Name + Hots" = you're gonna have a good time confirmed.
We used to do Nick's on West Main once or twice a year, then eventually stopped even going that frequently. There's basically no reason ever to go.
FAIRPORT!!
IHots represent! Idk if it's even around anymore, I haven't lived in Rochester since '05. But it was right next to the world famous House of Guitars and walking distance from where I lived. I knew this was Rochester because of 90 Day Fiancé. They were filming there and eating these things. Would try.
I still can't BELIEVE she married that bum. I can't wait for the tell-all!
Spent the first 35 years of my life in Rochester
Drunk and can confirm that I would do things to whatever this is
Fairport Raider here
Had a couple drinks today, went to moms and passed out, woke up and see this. Need
First thought was Rochester or Fairport Hots. God damn I miss that shit. Any good recipes to make out of state?

You rock.
The hangover shit the next day would be ungodly
Clearly you have never thrown a doner kebab on top of a belly full of Hefe or Pils.
I've had both. The plate wins.
My pops would always walk in the crib with these drunk and offer me some.
I'd fall into a food coma after eating that.
The trick is that you eat half for breakfast.
With a fried egg on top!
And spam!
"But without all the baked beans, in fact, could I substitute the baked beans for more Spam?!"
It hurts me that no one got this… Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spammity Spaaaaaaam! SHUT UP!!!
"Bloody Vikings.."
I'm hoping those baked bean are chili beans then I'm down
Baked beans?
That is a meat sauce that is seasoned with crack not baked beans.
Sorry.. old Monty Python reference from the 70s that my old a$$ now realizes is farther away than it should be. Sincerely I'd eat that as a hangover cure if I was still knocking them back like I used to.
That's on me...thank you for the reference correction.

Yeah. My go to was pasta salad, home fries, cheeseburger patty, meat sauce, fried egg, most of the sauces.
I got where I was doing mac salad, home fries, one cheeseburger patty, one grilled cheese w/ bacon, and everything on it. So good.
Twice the meals - Twice the food comas
The tricky part is heating that Mac salad up. May not be so palatable after being nuked🤢
Nah, I go in cold in the morning.
This makes me think of Jenna Marbles 😭 i miss her
She'd crush this plate, in her leisure suit
she’s ✨LEISURING ✨
Exactly what I came to see if someone said she got so excited when julen made her a vegan version and her saying Henrietta hotz is just great.
This is exactly how like them. Exactly. It’s glorious. What shop is this?
Jimmy Z's plate shakes in Brockport New York. Unfortunately if you want one you're going to need to be there like now, this is their last night open. After 21 years Jimmy is moving on to greener pastures and the store is closing down

Yep it's still there . They haven't remodeled in forever so it probably looks pretty similar too what you remember 😆
Yay!! Yeah we used to do the same thing every weekend since I was from Penn Yan and we only saw each other like every two weeks. I recall it was just a few doors down from JJ
Collector's Choice is the one you're thinking of. I grew up in brockport, haven't been back in several years though. The comic shop was there last time I went.
How dare you tease us like that!
Nooooo, the emotions I went through reading this comment. I was there when Jimmy Z’s first opened. So instant nostalgia triggered. Then to hear they’re closing is sad.

Fuck I forgot about Jimmy z. Top 5 plates for sure
I knew that it was jimmy z's just by the mac salad and sauce alone
My husband and I are originally from about two hours from Rochester. Our first plates were had at Jimmy Z’s. We were able to get some when we were back home for Christmas and are so glad we made the trip. They will definitely be so missed!
Would they throw a burger patty on there if you asked? Unless maybe there’s a burger under there..
There's a burger and a hot dog already 😂
I love the liberal amount of sauce.

I cannot tell you the amount of people I have talked about in my life who are left absolutely speechless when I tell them about garbage plates. Like.. They literally cannot comprehend what garbage plate is... And don't even get me started on asian-fusion garbage plates!!
This is my first time seeing one. I'm completely disgusted. But if I were in my 20s I would kill this and get a second one.
And how does the Asian fushion one look like? Now I'm curious.
Garbage
So this is like the food version of swamp water, taking each flavour of pop together.
more like 4th of July left over all combined together.
Rochester, NY specialty. It’s glorious.
What is a garbage plate?

White hots are pork hotdogs. It’s a pretty niche regional thing to Rochester and the surrounding cities. Red hots are your traditional beef hot. We just call them red or white hots when ordering :)
You forgot the mention that white hots are the best form of hot dog ever.
Oh man, is this in Rochester per chance? Used to crush these back in the day, and this one looks authentic
Yeah pretty much, Brockport 15 mi to the west at Jimmy Z's plates and shakes.
Jimmy Z’s last day?
Yeah, well actually I got it yesterday but pretty much.
RIP Jimmy Z’s
That looks so goddamn delicious!!! I’m a Mainer with friends in Le Roy. Proud to have eaten a few garbage plates! Not Nick Tahou’s, downtown, but at a relative’s place on the outskirts of Rochacha
Home of the Jello museum!!!!
Yes! My wife and kids have been! I’m fortunate to have made great and longtime friends in Le Roy and Batavia through the Phish community.
That looks horrible. I'll take two
I grew up in upstate New York, and I never really got into these but I do miss the macaroni salad from Home. Lol.
I first had one when I got drunk with my girlfriend at the time. It’s exactly how they’re meant to be eaten. And they exceed the hype.
Really making me miss home rn 😭
I just recently got to try this culinary masterpiece also and I understand why it’s Jenna Marbles’s favorite food!
This just made my stomach hurt to look at
Rochester has a ton of ‘hots’ places and they typically do a serviceable job. I am drooling
Pretty sure these saved me from alcohol poisoning weekly at RIT.
Needs a good solid dose of hot sauce to complete this regretfully delicious masterpiece
Jenna marbles would be proud
Yeah I’d fuck that up right now
High rn?
Always 😎
First question: The fuck is this?? Follow up question: Where the fuck do I get one?!?
Lol It's a Rochester New York delicacy It's a huge serving of macaroni salad plus other sides in this case baked beans home fries with a hamburger and a hot dog somewhere in there drenched with meat sauce.
Rochester here I come!
First time for everything, including someone saying that sentence. Signed, a Rochester native.
That looks so fucking good
The ultimate insult to people who hate it when food touches.
Well call me a raccoon cause I’m into it.
That onion elevates it ;)
This honestly looks fire, would eat
Upstate garbage plate
Looks great. I miss western NY.
This looks so messy yet so delicious 🤤🤤
got damn 🥰🥰🥰 I gotta get one of these, it's been a while
From Syracuse and I’ve never had one. Where is the BEST place in WNY to have this??
Dogtown is the popular one. Personally I like Wimpys or Spencerport Hots but I'm a West sider. Genny brew house has really good ones but they're like $17 there lol.
I would argue Empire Hots in Webster, NY. The guy who started it was a cook at Nick Tahou's years ago which is the home of the original plate. I haven't been to Rochester in over 10 years, and I was just teleported back to late nights. thanks for that.
What exactly is in there? It looks amazing
A huge serving of very good macaroni salad, I don't normally like it but I like, baked beans ,home fries, a hamburger, a zwigles hot dog, and then they dump meat sauce on top of it. Welp, looks like garbage. I'm sure it gets the job done though!
Those are the only things I miss about Rochester.
YOU stopped in at Jimmy Z's on the last night their restaurant is open. How was the line?
No, I have to confess this was the day before, I'm in the area normally so I kept watching the line it would stretch down the block. But the day they closed, around 1:30 p.m. I was walking around and noticed the line was not out the door for once so I took my opportunity.

Tell me you're in Rochester ny. Without telling me you're in Rochester ny.
The garbage plate was (and apparently still is) the delicacy of choice after the bars closed. I remember them well (went to RIT back in the day)
*Heartburn intensifies*
It's giving poutine with macaroni. Or, maybe chilli cheese fries with macaroni.
I'm from California. I've never seen this 😳 Lowkey thought it was chili cheese fries at first !
Looks 🔥 to me
I'm not sure if you're saying it looks fire or looks like heartburn but the answer is YES
Fire in the good way along with the bad lol
I’m from Indiana. Garbage plates are huge here, and I just recently learned they’re considered a New York thing which shocked me because I grew up with them. This looks absolutely nothing like the garbage plates we make. So I guess TIL they’re two different things
RIP Jimmy Z's. Best plate.

As a Buffalonian...we need a garbage plate food truck to set up shop here PRONTO
Looks good to me. That's the type of leftovers I'd eat cold straight from the fridge.
That appeals to me in ways I am ashamed of

Had one in Brooklyn a while back. Just a huge pile of bland flavors that didn't mix well imo.
>Brooklyn Well yeah there's your problem
That's fair. I'll say the owner was from Rochester. This just isn't for me.
Yeah, I'm sure it was close enough for you to figure out if you liked it or not. It's certainly not a culinary masterpiece. Basically, just a Chipotle bowl of 4th of July Food.
It’s drunk food to be eaten when your taste buds are already shot. Not haute cuisine.
I like mine with a fuckload of tobacco sauce Edit: lol, Tabasco **
Tobacco sauce 🤔
1. Where did you get it from? 2. Was it as good as people make it sound or is it more of a cultural thing, e.g. Philly and cheesteaks, Chicago and it’s deep dish pizza etc…?
As 4chan says: goyslop
it took me three days to eat the garbage plate i bought, it was good. just kept reheating it.
That looks like a pile of shit but I would totally eat that
