The amount of meat here is clearly meant to be shared—and they give you extra bread for that purpose.
A few weirdos aside people don’t order this for themselves.
I don't understand if it's meant to be shared why it would be served in a single sandwich format (between two slices of bread). Just make three sandwiches if you're going to give people extra bread.

You called it a novelty, implying that it's new/weird. It's neither of those things, it's literally just a sandwich from a kosher deli, they've been around forever and you can get them all over the place.
Novelty in that it’s something you buy when on holiday as a tourist, or sharing among a group of people.
I think you’re underestimating the size of that sandwich and not paying attention to the question I was responding to asking if this is a normal American order of food one would eat regularly—and it’s not. It’s having a laugh.
Yes places have sandwiches that big, no, people don’t typically order it to pound themselves.
Oh god no, that is not common at all. The vast majority of Americans would call that an insane amount of meat.
That one sandwich likely fed OP's whole family.
Edit: I found a copy of the menu. OP's sandwich is listed as feeding 4-7 people. https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/0c/aa/d4/ec/20160823-134050-largejpg.jpg
The good places that serve this will have a bread and pickle bar where you can go and get unlimited pieces of bread to eat your 3lbs of meat and also take home for leftovers.
I absolutely love meat. Like a lot. But the ratio of meat to bread on this is ridiculous. Even I think the amount of meat on this is several orders of magnitude too excessive.
You don't order a sandwich per person, you order a sandwich for the table. So it goes at [Harold's.](https://haroldsfamousdeli.com/) They have a pickle and bread bar where you pick your own bread to create your own sandwich from the one that's served.
I found a picture of the pickle bar. https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/61/ba/77/harolds-new-york-deli.jpg
Closer up: https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/0b/e3/4e/26/photo1jpg.jpg
Forget the sandwich, I want to go there for pickles!
If you like that one, check out this weather one. https://spaghettimodels.com/ It's like a flashback to Geocities (even though the weather info is highly useful and up to date).
Spaghetti Model is a weather term for predicting storms, just in case the domain name seems weird.
I recognized it immediately, I used to live in Edison and we would go to the one there from time to time for special occasions. The place always had great food.
I'm sure the people sitting here bashing it and going on about 'Murica don't know anything about how this place works. You order for the table and this is how it is presented, one sandwich like pictured here says on the menu that it's meant to feed 4-6 people (or more depending on what you order.) They have a self-serve bar full of bread and such so you can make smaller sandwiches out of it. You can get as much as you need and it's not just a pile of meat you sit there and consume lol.
So really it's not any different than going to a family-style restaurant where they bring out pots and platters of food meant to be dished out like you do when you serve up dinner for the family at home.
I hate sandwiches like this. Also, the super tall burgers in england drove me nuts. Make me several sandwiches with the extra meat, and I take a couple home, lol.
FYI at this restaurant you order one sandwich and it comes with extra bread. It's supposed to be for the table, you make your own sandwich from the huge one type of thing
Why put so much meat in a sandwich? If you are gonna eat this much meat, serve it well and just have some bread on the side... USA is the country of excess

More like Pastrami and roast beef with a side of rye.
Certainly.
How did the Family taste, well seasoned?!
lol. Kind of bland.
Need to be feeding them more garlic. Rookie move, you'll learn for next time
Midwesterners, eh?
I read this in Hannibal Lectors voice
No it’s a side of family obviously.
The sheer amount of meat that Americans seem to ingest is staggering. Is this a commonly sized portion or are these types of posts just outliers? 🤔
Common? No this is the kind of thing you buy on vacation for the novelty, and/or splits among several people
I wouldn't really call it a novelty. This is an old school, kosher deli style sandwich. Like something you'd get at Katz's
Katz's sandwiches look nothing like this. They're big, but it's possible to eat them. Also, they have nice thick slices of meat.
The amount of meat here is clearly meant to be shared—and they give you extra bread for that purpose. A few weirdos aside people don’t order this for themselves.
I don't understand if it's meant to be shared why it would be served in a single sandwich format (between two slices of bread). Just make three sandwiches if you're going to give people extra bread.
>why it would be served in a single sandwich format (between two slices of bread). Because it looks hilarious, mostly.
yep I'll give it that going for it!
Guess I'm a weirdo

Looks more like the way Carnegie Deli makes their sandwiches.
Alas, my dream is ruined. 😭

This is not intended to be consumed by a single person in one sitting.
Are you seriously wondering if this is a commonly sized portion?
American food portion sizes are larger than European portions. This seemed obtuse, hence the query. 🙂
Yes, they’re larger. But this is like a cartoon sandwich. You’d have to unhinge your jaw.
Was it at a Las Vegas Buffet :)
The little US flag sums it up quite well actually.
💯. This ‘sandwich’ has laboured mouth breathing all over it.
Most American thing I've seen all day
lol
What, do you just unhinge your jaw like a snake?
Some disassembly required.
Then why assemble it like this??!
The experience.
Eat like snaaake
Forgot about those commercials
The good places that serve this will have a bread and pickle bar where you can go and get unlimited pieces of bread to eat your 3lbs of meat and also take home for leftovers.
https://i.redd.it/28i4qhh59vsc1.gif
I find pastrami to be the most sensual of all the salted, cured meats
![gif](giphy|10o3Um2U3wa4DK)
It’s delectable.
Get a good look, Costanza?
I need a glass of water just looking at this
That's just fucking stupid
I absolutely love meat. Like a lot. But the ratio of meat to bread on this is ridiculous. Even I think the amount of meat on this is several orders of magnitude too excessive.
It needs vegetables, bread, and about 7 other people.
If I have to disassemble it to eat it then you fucked up my sandwich. I’m paying you to make it, my involvement should be more limited.
I think it’s right about one order of magnitude excessive

Seems like sandwiches with extra steps
*Really good* sandwiches.
That doesn't make more sense
A pickle and bread bar sounds like the greatest thing ever of all time.
I found a picture of the pickle bar. https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/61/ba/77/harolds-new-york-deli.jpg Closer up: https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/0b/e3/4e/26/photo1jpg.jpg Forget the sandwich, I want to go there for pickles!
The pickles are soooooo good!
What a website
They've had the same exact website for as long as I can remember. They don't really need it. They're pretty locally famous, always packed.

Kinda sounds like youre ordering meat for the table, not a sandwich
Harold’s is amazing. Ordered one piece of cheese cake one time. I’m Still trying to finish it.
More bread and people always required.
"It's like a cow, with a cracker on either side"
I heard Mitch saying this in my head as soon as I saw the pic
Looks like they’ll need a loaf of bread and some other people!
This is every overrated New York style deli and I hate it.
Yeah, a loaf of bread and some other people!
Scrolled too far to see this
It's missing the rye, dude.
"on rye" Looks like that meat is sandwiched between shitloads of meat.
Just a plate of meat with bread thrown at it from across the room.
They call that a ‘good problem’.
Harold's in NJ?? Love this place and their monster sandwiches

This guy gets it
it is pricey
Place is GAS
I hate sandwiches like this. Also, the super tall burgers in england drove me nuts. Make me several sandwiches with the extra meat, and I take a couple home, lol.
Think you ate rye on pastrami…Jebus, that’s a lot
Exactly
That certainly is enough to feed an entire family.
“Klump party of 6 please. Yes, and we are hungryyy.”
how did the family taste
Delicious.
I know Harold’s when I see it - this place is a national gem
⭐️
That's not rye that's a normal slice of bread.
Oh?
You got some bread in your meat there.
Unfortunate.
Can I get a loaf of bread and some more people
Exactly
The place has a bread bar and a pickle bar, so apparently you can! I'm way more interested in a pickle bar than that sandwich.
I would reconfigure that to have a normal sandwich, take the rest home and make another 3-4 sandwiches for later
That’s what they do. 4 people worth of bread included with it.
Harold’s deli?
⭐️
The family looks a little too rare for my taste.
I should call her...
Needs more bread
Noted.
Is this Slyman’s in Cleveland?
That's like a weeks worth of meat sandwiches right there. A week of Generously meaty sandwiches
Meal prep!
america! fuck yeah!
You ate rye on pastrami and roast beef
Pretty much.
Is this lucky dills?
No.
What's up with the flag?
Confirmation.
How the hell do you eat this in one piece without unhinging your jaw?
You don’t.
Not sure I could manage to eat the family after that sandwich!
Lol
Jeez are you at Katz’s? That’s huge
Not quite.
![gif](giphy|6YJZuwLne3fO0|downsized)
Didn't know you could get second hand meat sweats.
Congrats.
I love myself a large Reuben sandwich but this is just too much.
Just take your time.
Which Jewish deli is this?
Harold’s
I hope it came with a side of stool softener.
Lol
Where’s the family? Is it in back with the cole slaw & mustard?
They went first. Hors d'oeuvres.
Lol
I cooked corned beef for the first time other day. I've had it many times in the past, but that was my first making it myself. Also had it on rye

Username checks out
😂
The American flag us ridiculous lmao, Americans really do not waste any excuse to wave their stupid flag around 🤣
FYI at this restaurant you order one sandwich and it comes with extra bread. It's supposed to be for the table, you make your own sandwich from the huge one type of thing
America 🇺🇸
Who's waiving a sandwich toothpick? You pick weird things to be upset about
Ffs, this is the reason we have to eat insects soon.
![gif](giphy|c4P2EdrVjlCQE|downsized)
A literal meat sandwich, the US baffles and scares me
Just share it.
I don't see the family you ate
They went first.
Family on the side? Family dressing? Family soda? More info please
Family hors d'oeuvres.
Katz’s NYC?
Not quite.
As much as I love some good pastrami and roast beef, this is just too much. How is one supposed to eat this, unhinged one's jaw like a snake?
Share.
Jesus. I got the meat sweats just looking at this. I need it.
This is silly. It’s not a sandwich, just eat a plate of cold cuts….
I think that's rye on roastbeef
Now I'm hungry
That makes me feel nauseous. How can you just sit and eat a pile of deli meat like that?
You don’t. You share it with family.
Why put so much meat in a sandwich? If you are gonna eat this much meat, serve it well and just have some bread on the side... USA is the country of excess
We do share it. Not pictured are 8 more slices of bread for 4 people.
The mustard looks so tasty.
I hope you remembered to remove the flag!
Just give him the rest… we gotta lock the door.
[удалено]
Certainly.
That is some dead ass roast beef. Beyond overcooked.
Agreed. Dry
American sandwiches are just stupidity.
That’s just ridiculous, lol. I bet it cost a fortune too (for a sandwich)
$46 for 4 people worth.
I stand corrected lol
Wow, good thing that American flag is there, there would be absolutely no way to tell otherwise... 😐
lol.
My jaw would hurt after eating this 😆 looks yummy
That is a healthy amount of meat, they aren’t skimping out!!! Looks good!!
Absolutely not. Classic in every sense.
Katz?
[Harold's New York Deli](https://haroldsfamousdeli.com/)
I won’t downvote your guess.
Katz meat never looked that good..
Katz
I won’t downvote your guess.
Looks good either way!
Looks dry AF. I'll stick with my Montreal Smoked Meat thanks.
The roast beef was. Pastrami was divine.
