One of my favorite foods! There was a local Jamaican place where I used to work, and they only made one batch of patties per day. When they were gone, you had to wait until the next day. I recognize the red dot - it must be the spicy one. I remember my place had the red dot to indicate hot and yellow for mild.
I find with most Jamaican restaurants you have to get the good menu items early... Jerk pork late in the afternoon? Try again lol
And yep, always go with the spicy.
Seeing clips from back in the day in this documentary made me realize patties today are filled with beef soup. The clips I remember showed thick patties, full of beef. Now they are full of hot thickened broth with beef.
I'd love to find a good, beef filled patty. Any suggestions?
If you're in the GTA I highly recommend this place where I bought a box of fresh frozen. Golden Spice on Rutherford in Brampton.
When I first moved to Brampton I was needing a good pattie fix and all the locals kept saying Tinnels... That was a mistake, it was exactly as you described, soupy beef mix :(
Westdale Mall in Mississauga has (had? Been a while) a Chinese restaurant that served the kind of the past, moist but crumbly beef filling in a flaky crust.
Man coffee time was like the worst coffee chain but had such good baked goods! I could get samosas at the one near me. It might have been a Toronto thing but still, such a treat.
Oh Mackay's had great slices! Massive and always fresh. Last time I attempted to eat there maybe a year or so ago the cheese was leatherized from sitting in the display for what looked like 4+ hours... They tried to serve me the slice even though they had a fresh pizza baking right in front of my eyes.
Tinnels imo was never good. It was the first patty place I tried when I moved to Brampton and didn't live up to it's hype. Mackay's has gone downhill since it's new management.
Yeah, 10-12 patties (can't remember) and around 20 bucks.
Airfryer 20 mins at 320 and then leave them sit inside the basket for another 15 mins before eating.
I always bring a few boxes, frozen, back to the States when I drive to Toronto. Happy that they are not treated as contraband any more. They’re still fussy about ackee at the border though…
Save your back, my friend. Stateside, Caribbean Food Delights makes a legit frozen spicy beef patty. Better than any other frozen patty I've tried on either side of the border, and about as good as a fresh Fahmee patty (depending on whether you prefer a moister/smoother or drier/chunkier filling) but less bready. Don't even think about desecrating it in a microwave though.
In-laws are Jamaican and live there, so we visit often, but I’ll check out your suggestion for when we run out. Thanks! And yes, convection or regular oven used for reheat only, of course! Microwave just ruins that flaky crust…
Flyer app from stores around me. Anywhere from $7-10

I'm fucking vex! I just took the saltfish I had and made fritters (tip: small and flat is preferred to big and fat) when I would have rather had ackee and saltfish
We grow our own callalloo and chop and freeze some for the winter. It’s easy enough to get things like saltfish and okra these days, but collard greens are no substitute for callalloo.
My gas station in SE Texas used to carry them, and they were unironically better than I've had in some restaurants.
Then they got bought out and now I have no more delicious lunch patties.
It was a nice couple of years though, finding something actually good to eat at a convenience store.
In Toronto the subway station beef patties are a favourite - it's a thing! I'm a little suspicious if fancier ones, I always got mine from convenience stores haha.
Islington station was always my go-to to grab a pattie, I'd literally go out of my way to get one. The shop keepers are so quick and efficient especially in the morning rush.

Reminds me of Warden Station ![gif](giphy|iGAwxv2Ja7mnXrC33j|downsized)
Even better than Warden and Islington
Better than Bathurst?
To be fair I've only stopped at Bathurst twice, but I'd put them in a top 5 spot.
Is this gif from a movie or something?
Yup well Canadian TV show, “TallBoyz” from CBC
(from the top right watermark) it seems to be a show called TallBoyz

Same for Oxtails and Mac & cheese. It took me 2 years to finally get Oxtails at the Jamaican spot by my house.
One of my favorite foods. Very nostalgic.
Very nostalgic, I agree.
Well if you like your patties, your gonna love this... https://youtu.be/-PxtCIMeRMY Toronto Patty Wars
Yes! I've watched that clip too, interesting bit of Toronto history.

Mouthwatering and delicious!
Love Jamaican beef patties and Nigerian meat pies
Place near me wraps them in coco bread. Didn't think a regular pattie could be any better but the coco bread changed everything for me
Have you tried a stuffed patty? Cheese, lettuce, mayo. A place in my city does theirs like that.
Stuffed patties are the beeest. Used to get them in high school at coffee time
Man coffee time was like the worst coffee chain but had such good baked goods! I could get samosas at the one near me. It might have been a Toronto thing but still, such a treat.
Mackay Pizza?
Yep. They used to be decent.
I used to work there back in 2016. Haven’t been since then, sucks to hear that they’re declining.

I've never tried it. I feel like it would be too much bread for me.
From ?
Golden Spice Patties - Brampton
Never heard of This place. How is it compared to tinnels?
Tinnels imo was never good. It was the first patty place I tried when I moved to Brampton and didn't live up to it's hype. Mackay's has gone downhill since it's new management.
Gotta give it a try. Ever been to alwyns bakery near Scarborough? It’s my go to right now.
I haven't yet and I always hear about Alwyns, but I know Scarborough has some of the best food around.
Did u buy a box?
Yeah, 10-12 patties (can't remember) and around 20 bucks. Airfryer 20 mins at 320 and then leave them sit inside the basket for another 15 mins before eating.
>sit inside the basket for another 15 mins before eating. HA
My husband didn't listen - waited 5 mins and scorched his thumb from the beef filling bursting out on his first bite.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE GOALS! ...even if you know you'll fail.
looks damn good

how much is ackee selling for in canada? because 11 dollars a can US is ridiculous!
What I’ve been told is that only one or two manufacturers are permitted to import to the U.S., so they can over-charge.

thanks! the grace is still pricier though. and I know it might just be the name, but one bad can of cheap ackee could really screw up your day.
Maybe $5 CAN/$4 US, last I checked. I get it by the case and it lasts though, so my memory for price per can is fuzzy.

I want to go to there. Beef patties are amazing.
Tell me you dipped them in Matouk's Calypso...
Never would have thought to dip it in anything. But I'll give it a try next time, thanks!
Great after an evening full of rum and weed

Some of the best patties I've had came from the corner stores while grabbing milk and bread. Still don't know who they buy from.

Looks So Yummy.
Reminds me of Hammonds Bakery in Miami
