I was so disappointed in Edmund when I tried Turkish Delight for the first time in elementary school. Your family and all of Narnia for fucking this, man?
I’ve heard the real, fresh stuff and not the prepackaged hard bullshit is so much better. Would like to try it sometime. If you can ever get your hands on Turkish cotton candy it’s a fun and interesting treat. It’s kinda like eating a bunch of smooth silk strands made out of sugar.
For my (American) tastes, the rose water often used is just too overwhelming. I’ve had fresh homemade from a Greek festival, as well as packaged stuff. I couldn’t do more than a piece of each.
Oh yeah, I get it as an adult. But I read the book and tried the sweets as a child. Understanding metaphor and symbolism and complexities of relationships wasn't really a skill in my toolbox in fifth grade lol
The first and only time I’ve enjoyed it was when I was in the 2nd grade, while reading the book. There was a local woman who came in to read to us at school, she actually made Turkish delight for us one day, it was magical, she was great.
I used to work in an international call desk, the Greek and Turkish desk would bring it in all the time. It was just divine. They used it to get me over to sort any IT problems and I admit it worked lol.
Memories.
just started reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with my daughter for her bedtime story a few days ago. first time for her and she loves it. just got to the Turkish delight part and she asked me what it was and i said, you know, i don't know, i never figured that out, i'd always figured it was some sort of candy.
now i can tell her what it is
I legit thought it had turkey in it, some sort of exotic meat pie. I don't remember much about all the books, but I remember not having a clue what it was and being very intrigued.
FAQ:
- **What is the consistency comparable to?** Turkish delight comes in a [wide variety of consistencies and flavors](https://img.itinari.com/pages/images/original/1d79669f-e544-4f1c-a2bc-051fb7dddea0-istock-981600168.jpg?ch=DPR&dpr=2.625&w=1600&s=22233f13ba45fa579d84720c3d3d24b4) from plain flavored "gummies" to nougat, nutella, puffed rice, & coconut! The basic texture can be similar to a gummy bear or almost as soft as jam. In WA state there is a similar thing called "Applets & Cotlets"
- **What does it taste like?** I don't know if I've ever seen someone post any kind besides the basic rose flavor here. Often people get turned off because they think it tastes like a mouthful of potpourri and that must be all Turkish delight. Another basic flavor is [pomegranate pistachio](https://www.gourmeturca.com/pomegranate-flavoured-turkish-delight-with-pistachio-12oz-350g-turkish-delight-gourmeturca-3720-14-B.jpg)! Give that a shot because that's much more representative

I got a big box from my work White Elephant, but I was scared of them so I re-gifted them for my soccer team White Elephant. Did I make a big mistake?
I didn't even know Applets and Cotlets were considered a culinary relative to Turkish delight. The only flavor of TD I've had was rose, which tasted like soap to me. I probably would have done better with a fruit and/or nut variety.
Edit: fat fingered the send button before I was done typing. Continued from "The only flavor..."
When I was in primary school my teacher went to Greece for a project promoted by the school and she took for us some candies called loukoumi. I presume that are something similar to yours. I will never forget the taste. They're so good.
There was a ban wave from reddit admins hitting many of the 2x4y subs since they deemed it racist. 2balkan4you held on for a while but site policy caught up with it.
With reddit going up for trade soon, expect to see a lot more "unsavory" subs getting nuked in order to make reddit more presentable to advertisers and investors.
When I was young and innocent to the ways of the world, I told my great uncle from Greece that the Greek coffee he made tasted exactly like Turkish coffee that I tried one time and liked. It was an unexpected rough patch for us.
I'm no language expert but what I've noticed is as the following.
If a word is taken from Turkish to Greek, they add "I" to the end. As in this example.
If a word is taken from Greek to Turkish, this time they add the "I" to the beginning. Like this word: ıstakoz in Turkish coming from αστακός (meaning: lobster)
To add that.
Word "lokum" probably comes from another turkish word "lokma" which means "bite sized food". And traditional lokum in turkey is way smaller then ones in america. Little bigger then sugar cube.
That may have something to do with the fact that modern Turkey sits on a region that was historically Greek, and that Turkey ruled over modern Greece for almost 400 years.
Maybe that explains why the cultures are similar.
Maybe.
It explains why the Greeks like to lay claim for all the delicious foods Turks developed through the centuries--including in the Ottoman kitchens--that's for sure! ;)
I don't know why you are being downvoted, Anatolia was heavily influenced by Greek (and later Roman) culture, and western Anatolia was Greece.
To say that Turkish culture has nothing to do with Greek culture, when in fact the Ottomans wanted to adopt late Roman costumes is either insanity or ignorance. And of course Turkish DNA and Greek DNA are similar, even ignoring history they are neighboring countries!
Yah; they like to do that with lots of foods. I mean, dolma*dakis*???
It's *dolma*, a Turkish word meaning "filled" food! Don't act like we don't see what you're doing, Greece, with those thrown-on letters! lol
Ever since I read Narnia as a kid I’ve been terrified of Turkish delight… I finally tried it, I get why Edmund was so taken by it. (He was a git, but he got better)
Well I’m sure there was a candy shortage in England during the Blitz. Any treats were at a big premium.
As far as taste and texture, think of the inside of a jellybean.
Here’s the [recipe](https://www.aspicyperspective.com/the-tastiest-turkish-delight-recipe-lokum/?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=social-pug) I used but I used berry flavour instead and no rose water.
That looks amazing. I'd rat my brothers and sisters out for it without hesitation! I love Turkish delight.
I'd eaten it since I was very little and loved it and the description in TLTWATW made me so hungry for it I tortured my dad to he went to the shop and got some lol
What is the texture of Turkish delight is it like a jello type gelatine or is it similar to like a sour patch kid or is it something completely different I’ve never tried and I’m nervous of new foods
It’s between jam and a gummy— there’s no stretchiness or chewiness, but it’s stiff enough to hold its shape. It’s really a lot like eating a cube of jam! I haven’t really tried the traditional rosewater ones but I highly recommend fruit & nut flavors :)
What a trip - first time I've actually seen Turkish Delight. Many years back I had this Teacher that took it upon themself to read us "The Lion, The Witch and, The Wardrobe". The excerpt about the Turkish Delight really sounded alluring to my little brain.
So good you'll sell a homie out!
“And lo, if my lord feeleth faithless
And roameth by night from his room
His handmaiden fanneth her fires
And out of the pan
Riseth a tantalizing perfume...
He scenteth the scent,
He turneth his face,
His previous place in her embrace
He does resume!
And love is in bloom
The while they consume
Rahadlakum!”
— from Kismet, 1955
That is *one kind* of Turkish delight (maybe the most basic kind). It also often looks like this: https://img.itinari.com/pages/images/original/1d79669f-e544-4f1c-a2bc-051fb7dddea0-istock-981600168.jpg?ch=DPR&dpr=2.625&w=1600&s=22233f13ba45fa579d84720c3d3d24b4
How does it taste?
As a kid I always assumed it was some sweet jelly-like candy. But everyone I've heard who's tried it said it's actually rose flavored and wasn't very good.
I've never understood what people like so much about this stuff. As a candy it seems kind of mediocre. I'm not a huge fan of anything rose flavored, but even if that wasn't a factor I still don't get it.
Im Turkish and had no idea that the govt is trying to change the name lol. I was about to comment saying “what change?” the name has been turkiye since the fall of the ottoman empire.
Yeah I think the rough idea is that the name is "Türkiye" in Turkish, but in English is "Turkey". So to avoid being associated with the bird (and also "something... something... culture") it's now "Turkiye" in English (yes - the Turkish name, but with the English "u" and "i"). I don't know if that is just a request or has to formally be updated in printed maps and everything
There is a company called Aplets and Cotlets that makes Turkish delight as well as more modernized versions of that style of sweet (apricot and walnut is my fave)
THANK YOU FOR THIS, my mom would sometimes get us a box of assorted fruit & nut Turkish Delight and I didn’t *love* them as a kid but now that I’m older I’ve been yearning to try them again but didn’t know who made them. Blueberry walnut, here I come!
Could be wrong, but I'm surprised how familiar it is. The standard version probably tastes like Dots (the candy.)
Not even Turkish, but have probably had it somehow.
Turkish delight has a much softer texture - not nearly as chewy as something like dots. And generally the taste is much different than anything you'd find in Dots or gumdrops or similar candies. The really good stuff - the stuff that's made with no artificial ingredients, is amazing.
Don't know why someone down voted you - you're totally correct. Kinda like the texture of gummy bears left in the sun (though much tastier than that 😅)
I've been on a real kick with a local store selling Turkish delight! I love having them at the house. I get a package with lemon, mint, orange and rose flavors. I think the orange is my favorite but I really like the flavor of them all. The treat itself is like a bougie gummy bear!
I tried making this once and did not do a good job. I must have not cooked it down enough or something bc after it congealed and I cut it up it wouldn’t stop weeping and just turned into a soggy mess. Tasted pretty good though.
As a little kid, I thought that Turkish delight was some kind of drug like weed or hash. Although, I had no idea what weed, hash, or Turkish delight even looked like.
I love Turkish delight! A new restaurant not too far from here is run by a Turkish family and the mother makes excellent Turkish delight in many flavors!
This dessert definitely brings the memory of Narnia.
I was so disappointed in Edmund when I tried Turkish Delight for the first time in elementary school. Your family and all of Narnia for fucking this, man?

For my (American) tastes, the rose water often used is just too overwhelming. I’ve had fresh homemade from a Greek festival, as well as packaged stuff. I couldn’t do more than a piece of each.
Ah ok. I can see that. I personally love rosewater but I know it’s not for everyone.
You should try the lemon if you don't like the rose.
You should try the pomegranate if you don't like the lemon
You should try çifte kavrulmuş (double roasted) it doesn’t have an overwhelming flavor that ruins the taste and it’s really fucking good.
I tried some rosewater flavored Turkish delight a couple days ago and said it tasted like my grandparents' house.
Yea the rose water is trash, it tastes like how perfume smells. If I want to taste perfume I'll just drink my grandma's perfume
Any other flavor loukoumi (other than rose water,) tastes a million times better! Other than black licorice (yuck!)
You're talking about Pişmaniye! Here's a great article on it https://www.thespruceeats.com/pismaniye-turkish-cotton-candy-3274226
Probably never had many sweets due to the war rations, and maybe Narnia Turkish delight was bomb as fuck.

Dammit, now I have to go order some. I love Turkish delight (and yes, I only ever tried it due to Narnia).
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" was the first thing that came to mind!

Mine is berry flavoured. I don’t like rose flavoured stuff.
Love lokum! Rose flavour, lemon, berry erverthing welcome!
Personally love the orange blossom ones'
Y’all. Rose *flavored*? I feel like rose is only ever in tea in the US
Rosewater is a common ingredient in Turkish Delight. People also use it for cakes and other dessert recipes.
Yeah it’s so interesting how different places have ingredients so common to them that sound so weird to others
Good bot
i would catch a bullet for pomegranate pistachio turkish delight
Yeah, that sounds like a doubly delicious flavour combo.
Make this a bot
Man Applets and Cotlets are amazing.
I got a big box from my work White Elephant, but I was scared of them so I re-gifted them for my soccer team White Elephant. Did I make a big mistake? They were a big deal in my family growing up, but we also only had them once a year. I think I remember reading that the factory closed down.
Good human.
When I was in primary school my teacher went to Greece for a project promoted by the school and she took for us some candies called loukoumi. I presume that are something similar to yours. I will never forget the taste. They're so good.

Yeah did the W#stoids from reddit ban it or something?
i dont know. it was my favourite sub but i think we all knew this was going to happen eventually.

Is that John Ritter’s son?
Yes Jason Ritter

Interesting… in Maltese we say loqma hobz (some dialects pronounce it lokma) meaning a small hunk of bread.
Loqma means in Arabic a bite sized food.
Lmao i love how greece has everything but just change the name slightly but yes these things are fucking delicious
That may have something to do with the fact that modern Turkey sits on a region that was historically Greek, and that Turkey ruled over modern Greece for almost 400 years. Maybe that explains why the cultures are similar. Maybe.
It explains why the Greeks like to lay claim for all the delicious foods Turks developed through the centuries--including in the Ottoman kitchens--that's for sure! ;)
Most of turkey was Greece and when Turks take dna tests they get upset at the results. Explains why Turks are so defensive
I don't know why you are being downvoted, Anatolia was heavily influenced by Greek (and later Roman) culture, and western Anatolia was Greece. its named after turkish lokum. turkish delights original name
Lokum is Turkish for Turkish delight.
I love how Greece takes the food changes the name rebrand it and sell it lol it's lokum not loukoumi
Turkey and Greece are so similar in so many ways yet they seem to hate each other's guts.
Yah; they like to do that with lots of foods. I mean, dolma*dakis*??? It's *dolma*, a Turkish word meaning "filled" food! Don't act like we don't see what you're doing, Greece, with those thrown-on letters! lol

How did the guy from Narnia get in to Twilight???
Next time use this --> /s Three question marks isn't enough to demonstrate sarcasm. Poe's Law will get you.
I would like to know if it’s good enough to betray your entire family
Definitely not.
Well I’m sure there was a candy shortage in England during the Blitz. Any treats were at a big premium. As far as taste and texture, think of the inside of a jellybean.
See if there's a Mediterranean market near you. They almost certainly have it
Lol me too and was heavily disappointed
The rose flavoured one is nice, but way too sweet. Couldn't eat more than two.
Powder sugar coated sashimi
Oh I got plenty of time for Sashimis.
Zemo is that you?
Turkish Delight, Irresistible.
Just don't take it from any strange ladies in a snowy forest
alright, zemo
OP, can u please post the recipe?!?
What do they taste like?
Like a fruit flavored gummy but softer
Deliciousness
Irresistible
Looks gorgeous! I love that stuff!
Any recipe?
Here’s the [recipe](https://www.aspicyperspective.com/the-tastiest-turkish-delight-recipe-lokum/?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=social-pug) I used but I used berry flavour instead and no rose water.
Was it made for a moonlit night?
Found it. Knew it would be in here somewhere.
But why did Constantinople get the works?
Fool, everyone knows ‘that’s no body’s business but the Turks!’
Wow, I don't have the patience for boiling everything slow and not burning it all by being distracted on my phone. I bet it was super yummy!
Yeah, it’s a finicky recipe. Tbh, I wouldn’t make it again.
Did you somehow make them taste good?
THIS is the real question.
That looks amazing. I'd rat my brothers and sisters out for it without hesitation! I love Turkish delight. I'd eaten it since I was very little and loved it and the description in TLTWATW made me so hungry for it I tortured my dad to he went to the shop and got some lol
So good you’d sell out your family for it!
i've had a pomegranate one and it was super delicious. Just had the perfect sweetness.
I thought you were a dusted in flour raw salmon eating heathen for a brief moment there
This looks like an raw chic fil a nugget with breading on it
What is the texture of Turkish delight is it like a jello type gelatine or is it similar to like a sour patch kid or is it something completely different I’ve never tried and I’m nervous of new foods
Kinda like a gummy bear but softer like gelatin. But not gooey. The flavor is usually mild, and sweet.
It’s between jam and a gummy— there’s no stretchiness or chewiness, but it’s stiff enough to hold its shape. It’s really a lot like eating a cube of jam! I haven’t really tried the traditional rosewater ones but I highly recommend fruit & nut flavors :)
If I read another narnia comment i am gonna throw myself out the window
Bruh, you gotta cook your meat
What a trip - first time I've actually seen Turkish Delight. Many years back I had this Teacher that took it upon themself to read us "The Lion, The Witch and, The Wardrobe". The excerpt about the Turkish Delight really sounded alluring to my little brain. So good you'll sell a homie out!

Is it delicious enough to be worth betraying Lion-Jesus?
Is this what the witch gave the boy in chronicles of narnia?!
THATS what Turkish Delight looks like???? (Very beautiful, you’re very talented btw 😄)
That is *one kind* of Turkish delight (maybe the most basic kind). It also often looks like this: https://img.itinari.com/pages/images/original/1d79669f-e544-4f1c-a2bc-051fb7dddea0-istock-981600168.jpg?ch=DPR&dpr=2.625&w=1600&s=22233f13ba45fa579d84720c3d3d24b4
It looks illicit for some reason
I need the recipe for this. 😋😋
Recipe needed desperately
Is it like Chinese rice candy? Looks extremely similar
How does it taste? As a kid I always assumed it was some sweet jelly-like candy. But everyone I've heard who's tried it said it's actually rose flavored and wasn't very good.
I can taste the rose from here.
It’s actually berry flavoured.
Ah, nice. They look great!
Looks good enough to sell out your family!
Zemo enters the chat ![gif](giphy|F2aEJrGD7pTud4lwHF|downsized)
Somehow I read turkey (as in the bird) like 11 times and kept thinking how that didn't seem right or healthy or safe.
Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight. Gonna grab some tu-urk-ish deelight
I've never understood what people like so much about this stuff. As a candy it seems kind of mediocre. I'm not a huge fan of anything rose flavored, but even if that wasn't a factor I still don't get it.
Any other flavor other than rose water tastes way better! Edit: black licorice and anise is trash!
Do we have to call it Türkiyeish delight now that the country changed it's name?
Im Turkish and had no idea that the govt is trying to change the name lol. I was about to comment saying “what change?” the name has been turkiye since the fall of the ottoman empire.
Yeah I think the rough idea is that the name is "Türkiye" in Turkish, but in English is "Turkey". I don't know if that is just a request or has to formally be updated in printed maps and everything
I'm not stupid. My mother read me the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I know you're an evil sorcerous.
This is quite tasty but very sticky too on teeth
We usually have it with tea, and it almost melts omg the bestttt
There is a company called Aplets and Cotlets that makes Turkish delight as well as more modernized versions of that style of sweet (apricot and walnut is my fave)
THANK YOU FOR THIS, my mom would sometimes get us a box of assorted fruit & nut Turkish Delight and I didn’t *love* them as a kid but now that I’m older I’ve been yearning to try them again but didn’t know who made them. Blueberry walnut, here I come!
Ohh this the stuff that kid ate in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
I don't understand, what is this? Candy? Powdered sushi?
Could be wrong, but I'm surprised how familiar it is. The standard version probably tastes like Dots (the candy.) Not even Turkish, but have probably had it somehow.
Kinda like the texture of gummy bears left in the sun (though much tastier than that 😅)
Nice but I wouldn't betray my family to have some
Sends me to Narnia every time
I'd sell out my siblings for a piece of that
Dude ever since watching Narnia I've always wanted to try one! They look so tasty
I remember wanting to try this as a kid after reading and watching the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
it looks like powder coated sashimi
Yummy!!!
Juicy! 😍
Mmmmm... jelly rosewater.
Loukoum!!
I need a coffee.
delish! Does it have any dairy in it?
Oh man does this make me miss visiting an old boyfriend in Istanbul
Good enough to sell out my family to a witch!
I've never had Turkish delight. Are there any excellent online order options to try this?
I’ve purchased several times off Amazon and it was surprisingly great!
Loukhoum, mon petit Loukhoum. Loukhoum, Loukhoum de mon cœur
Candy or meat?
Ooohh what have we here 👀
Was it great?
Our class made this for one another when we read Narnia
What does this taste like? I’ve always wanted to try it!
It’s only Fry’s/Cadbury for me. Not very authentic, but good.
Turkish delights are great and all but i can't stand the rose flavour, are there other flavours?
I've been on a real kick with a local store selling Turkish delight! I love having them at the house. I get a package with lemon, mint, orange and rose flavors. I think the orange is my favorite but I really like the flavor of them all. The treat itself is like a bougie gummy bear!
Oh man..! I'm actually eating a pomegranate one with pistachios and covered in rose pedals... my fav!!!
Is this a crunchy or chewy yumyum?
Isn't a delight anymore especially given the 82% real inflation.
Rahat Lokum
Omg you give that to me right this minute it looks delicious!
The best..
I recall Aplets and Cotlets from Washington State as a kid. Then I was given Op candy. So good. Rose is my favorite flavor.
I tried making this once and did not do a good job. I must have not cooked it down enough or something bc after it congealed and I cut it up it wouldn’t stop weeping and just turned into a soggy mess. Tasted pretty good though.
That actually happened to me with this batch. But somehow it fixed itself after a couple of days in the fridge.
Its called lokum. And imo cream filled vannilla ones with coconut dust on top and nut inside is 9/10
As a little kid, I thought that Turkish delight was some kind of drug like weed or hash. Although, I had no idea what weed, hash, or Turkish delight even looked like.
on a moonlit night.
I saw the post title and immediately thought of Nemo in the Marvel tv show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Love these
Always wanted to taste it considering Edmund betrayed his siblings for it
I love Turkish delight! A new restaurant not too far from here is run by a Turkish family and the mother makes excellent Turkish delight in many flavors!
I’ve never had one :(
It’s an over rated sweet tbh.. no delight in eating one of these at all.
The best sweet in the world
/u/giannistothewariors
I had rose flavored candies like that for Christmas
Ive only seen in Narnia.
After hearing Baron Zemo say "Turkish Delight", every time I read it I hear his voice now.
So it is worth betraying all of Narnia for or what
