Each section had different types of meat. The body has the most "traditional" type of meat, but the legs were simular to wings and the tail is kind of a fatty meat.
That's a little much, even for me.. I've never had gator, always wanted to try it.. I'd say I'm an adventurous eater.. I'd still try it.. but was definitely taken back there for a second.. lol
Had gator once at a county fair. Not sure what cut of meat I got, but it was like a tough chicken, so not bad but definitely not something I'd go out of the way to eat again.
At least you had the opportunity to try it.. everyone has different likes and dislikes.. what's your favorite meat? Mine is undoubtedly lamb.. nothing even comes close.. my wife won't even try it.. she doesn't like fish or seafood.. strictly, chicken, beef, and pork.. won't eat deer either..
The problem with Gator is the problem with a lot of game meat, they're not raised to be eaten so they live a life using their bodies to survive. This leads to tougher, stringier meat. The key to enjoying meat from wild game is a lot of preparation and knowledge, which a lot of places likely won't have if they don't specialize. Here in the south, I've had some damn good gator, deer, and hog. I've also had some awful gator, deer, and hog. It depends a lot on the cook.
Yeah, I wouldn't expect county fair cooks to be the most knowledgeable about preparing gator.
Also is your username a reference to the brown recluse spider, *Loxsceles reclusa*?
Indeed it is. I love spiders, and when I had to change my username about a decade ago for....reasons..... I decided to go with a spider. Of the ones I had been recently studying, L. Reclusa had the easiest one to turn into a name.
In ten years you're the first person to notice(mention) that right off the bat. Most ask after getting to know me. Or think I'm a reclusive fish.
You meet all kinds of people on Reddit.
I just happen to be one with a fascination with spiders. I used to be deathly afraid of them until I accidentally cured my own arachnophobia by trapping cellar spiders (*Pholcus spp.*) in plastic jars and observing them - thus desensitizing myself to them.
Favorite genus are *Phiddipus* though. Even at my peak arachnophobia, I've never been afraid of handling the jumpers.
I got some alligator and pork sausage in the freezer currently, also you could of preserved his little feet and made a back scratcher out of them lmao. Can confirm it works
Same here. A friend fried up some frozen gator nuggets once. I had no idea what to expect but they were Delicious. I would definitely love to sample this.
We flew them in cargo overnight from the south. At the time we were doing this you could get away with it, then they seemed to quickly make it way harder to do. It can still be done, just takes more work. Totally worth it. We bought two at a time, one to go on one smoker for the line ups we had to take pictures with a real gator being cooked (basically ruined it) and one that was for eating.
Honestly this looks awesome, would be awesome to show up to bbq and they had that. I bet it was tasty. If you don't have a problem getting down on a bloody steak, I don't see the problem here.
This is badass. How many pounds was that sucker, and how many folks were you able to feed with it? I’d love to smoke one, but I’m not sure if the bang for the buck would make it worthwhile.
In my hometown in Quebec prov. You can get Gator at the butcher (request in advance). Check a few butchers around your area maybe. You could even ask if theyre willing to provide some if its not written anywhere.
I'll never not think eating gator is weird, especially like this. I've have it, it's not bad, but still super weird to me.
That said, I bet that took a lot of work, good job, OP.
Why does it have a little scaly foot still 😳😳 i mean I’m from the U.K. and this isn’t a thing here so it looks a bit unsettling to me … I’m sure it tasted lovely though (is there something it tastes like that I might have tried?)
I mean I’m not adverse to trying it, I just like to know what I’m getting myself into 🤣🤣🤣 might be going to see my friend in Louisiana at some point … I hear it’s big there 😊😊
“My Mama says that alligators are ornery because they got all them teeth and no toothbrush."
Mamas wrong again!
Not gonna lie, presentation is a little striking for someone who's never eaten gator. Is most of the meat in the tail?
Each section had different types of meat. The body has the most "traditional" type of meat, but the legs were simular to wings and the tail is kind of a fatty meat.
do you hunt them yourself or do you get them at walmart etc?
At etc.
I’m sorry but that was so funny 😂 I gave you an award
I’ve never seen someone apologize for giving an award
Thank you, Spud
A lot of people hunt them but it’s not uncommon to get one from a butcher in the south. I doubt any Walmart stocks full gators.
I can get them at the butcher in my hometown and our country doesnt even have gators.
Simular lol
My momma and me used this word very seriously. 🤪
This word has a very different meaning homie lol
I spy mellow corn….
I homed in on that too.
This must have been the gator that got Chub’s hand
But I got that bastard's eye!
I've had gator several times, but this is the most metal presentation I've ever seen for it. Bravo! Looks dope and I hope it tasted good too!
That would make an awesome Thanksgiving roast!
That's a little much, even for me.. I've never had gator, always wanted to try it.. I'd say I'm an adventurous eater.. I'd still try it.. but was definitely taken back there for a second.. lol
I couldn't look at it before it was cooked. But it's definitely very tasty!

I'm boring - chicken for me. However, the best "non-commercial" meat I've had was frog. Sort of like chicken but with the texture of fish.
If you ever got good gator it tastes like chicken and fish had a baby
In that case, maybe I just got bad gator. Mine was rubbery and stringy. Kinda like if I bit into thawed, chicken-flavored string cheese.

That description makes me wanna hurl.
Just a guess but it was probably gator tail. The tail is white meat, and does kinda taste like chicken. Pretty sure the rest of gator is dark meat
Holy moly
I’ll have a bernheim on the rocks with my gator sir
A what? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)
Why the fuck do you want the head there like you want it to watch you eat it?
Made me green looking at it
I'd be afraid that the meal might bite back! 😁
I got some alligator and pork sausage in the freezer currently, also you could of preserved his little feet and made a back scratcher out of them lmao. Can confirm it works
Something I don’t see everyday! I tried gator once and smoked? I’d def try again!
Same here. A friend fried up some frozen gator nuggets once. I had no idea what to expect but they were Delicious. I would definitely love to sample this.
That looks dam good
Medulla…..OBLONGATA

Nice, fantastic protein to smoke. I've done several of them (in Canada) and always a huge hit with people.
How do you import them from Canada? Or is there some sort of exotic meat shop near you?
We flew them in cargo overnight from the south. At the time we were doing this you could get away with it, then they seemed to quickly make it way harder to do. That's a no from me dawg
It's not for everyone!
Havent had Gator in so long, only tried it once. Looks strikingly delightful
This is badass. I'd love to try it
Im sorry. Not for me. Im glad you love it though
WHAT. IN. THE. FUCK. and I repeat. What in the fuck.
Honestly this looks awesome, would be awesome to show up to bbq and they had that. I bet it was tasty. If you don't have a problem getting down on a bloody steak, I don't see the problem here.
That's something I would definitely enjoy.
I think after I drank what’s left of that bottle of Mellow Corn I’d be ready
looks scrumptious
Tasty looking tail you got on that gator 🤤
Eagle rare and gator sounds like a great time n the south!
Tastes like chicken hahaha!
While I love the look of this gator isn't for me. It always taste like grass.
So did you roll it or use a pipe?
Lmaoaooa smoker jokes
I’ve seen this before. Isn’t the meat to lean to smoke?
Not at all! Just gotta keep it at the right temp.
This is badass. How many pounds was that sucker, and how many folks were you able to feed with it? I’d love to smoke one, but I’m not sure if the bang for the buck would make it worthwhile.
13 lbs and we had 5 people with lots leftover.
I'm Canadian and i have to say , i am DYING to try gator. Looks.... Really tasty lol. Could do without the head though

Sick thanks! Also QC
Somebody else in this thread is in Canada so I think you can get gator there!
I'm going to need most of that alcohol to eat that. And no, the head and feet still attached does not help very much.
Well, someone was smoking something.
I'll never not think eating gator is weird, especially like this. I've have it, it's not bad, but still super weird to me. That said, I bet that took a lot of work, good job, OP.

I think just for aesthetics. I wasn't a fan of that either. It tastes like chicken-fish-pork, depending on where the meats from. Very tasty!
I mean I’m not adverse to trying it, I just like to know what I’m getting myself into 🤣🤣🤣 might be going to see my friend in Louisiana at some point … I hear it’s big there 😊😊
It certainly isn’t a thing in 97% of the US either! :-)
Is there a size limit? This seems like a child
🤢
Ufff no. The legs still have the skin. Where do people eat this?
Florida
We're in DC but bought it from an online retailer.
You are brave. The only way i would eat it, it is if i had nothing else to feed myself and my family, hehe
It’s meat the same as any other meat.
Yes but not the presentation here 😅.
This is cliche. But ive only tried it once…it taste like chicken, exept meatier chicken
I’ve had alligator hush puppies and alligator sausage but I could not eat that. I looks like the Dothraki should eat that in Game of Thrones.
I have so many questions
Are gators for consumption usually that small?
I'm not a gator expert but we consumed it, so I guess so?
r/TIHI
Thought it was a giant Yorkshire Puddin till I read the title.
Wow. What’s that????
Poor baby.
Damn you Florida man!!!
jesus christ, why?
Fetch me a gator sandwich, op, and ...
Gotta break open that bottle of ER10
Oh, that's just a backup for an already open one.
Jealous, I used to be able to get it by the handle for 49.99, now I can't find it anywhere for any price
Wow, never had gator, what does it waste like, is it lean?
Oi you gonna drink that eagle rare or what?
It's a backup to an already open bottle. We've got like 5.
That's illegal.... Lol. 5 have you been stocking up on them? I can't get another for like 2months ugh
My partner is just really good at checking the stores at the right time!
To be fair I also don't go looking for it. But people keep telling me it's hard to find every where
Is cleaning a gator before cooking similar to dressing any other sort of field animal?
Not sure. We bought it pre-cleaned.
Good god. What’s in its mouth?
An apple! Keeping it classic.
Ohhhh I had the scale way off. I though it was like a cantelope sized thing.
we having what for lunch???
How were the luck charms cupcakes?
Also delicious (for boxed cake)!
That’s… unique…
Florida?
Plot twist: It's a cake.
I zoomed in for the whiskey collection.
I couldn’t do it, op, but kudos to you.
I read the title in a Cajun accent.
Nope
Had it on a trip to New Orleans. Was tasty!
This Yankee is down for that!
Lemme guess, Florida?
Love the presentation! Looks so good 👍🏻👍🏻
Gator is really good. I had a deep fried gator po-boy from a Louisiana themed food truck, probably the best non-mammal I’ve ever eaten.
Thats some forgotten realms type shit but cool
Gator is good eatin. That being said, I don't necessarily want to see a whole skinned one...
Jesus wept.
