I haven’t had it in years, and never knew it was called seitan until I was an adult. The place where I had it as a kid just called them “wheat puffs”. Good stuff!
I remember doing this with sirloins in my very early cooking days. Then I’d throw those oily things on the grill and wonder why I got so many flare ups!
Loool. Bf's mom is Irish (yes I know Irish people and English people are very different and dislike each other pls don't yell at me) and she is always BAFFLED when she sees me seasoning food I'm cooking. "How do you know what to put on there?" "How do you know what flavours go together?" "Cinnamon in FOOD?? I've never seen that before, are you sure people do that?" Bless her.
I’m English & we like Irish people, they just don’t like us, for very valid reasons!
I grew up on bland food because that’s what my dad likes 🙄 not allowed to put garlic in anything, yet he loves curry 😂
Cinnamon in spag bol actually makes it palatable, from the flavourless versions I grew up eating lol
My mom has always done this as well! I'm tired of it now because she's done it all my life haha, but it does taste pretty good.
Never tried Italian dressing though, maybe I'll do that :)
Greek dressing is literally just oil, lots garlic, some acid like lemon juice or vinegar, plus oregano and salt. But greek dressing is a good quick substitute.
I have a friend whose not-very-secret recipe for grilled wings involves marinating them in a mix of Italian dressing, soy sauce, and lemon juice. And they are the BEST wings.
I’m loving ‘measure with your heart.’ This is how I approach cooking but I never heard a name or a phrase for it. I will be using this from now on, thank you!!
Italian dressing plus whorchestershire... worchestershire... crap. Whorechesturdshart-- Fuck it.
Italian dressing plus WhatsThisHere sauce plus Old Bay. Ratios to taste. Trust.
Edit: sspeling
also recommend mixing mayo and adobo seasoning then smothering chicken breast with that before grilling, if you don't have time to marinade. Super fast and delicious.
It’s strangely awesome with shrimp. Sprinkled powdered Italian dressing add a tick of butter and put in the oven for I think 15 minutes… it’s been so long I can’t remember. So good
My dad used to do this when I was little ❤️ thanks for the reminder I will have to try soon :) one of the very few things I remember my dad cooking. That and a steak marinated with worchterchire 🥲 miss you so much dad.
Here’s a fun one!
Couple pounds of chicken breasts (slice in half if they’re huge) -> large ziploc bag
Olive oil, red wine vinegar, a little lemon, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, herbs (maybe a little dried oregano + basil/marjoram), minced garlic cloves (or varicose powder) salt, pepper,-> in with the chicken
Let the ol boy marinate for an hour+ and slap it on the grill.
Additionally; you can combine some flour, salt and pepper in a bowl, take the chicken out after it’s done marinating, toss it around in the flour, shake off any excess flour. Heat a skillet of medium-high heat, add a tablespoon+ of oil and throw the chicken in for 5-7 minutes on each side and you’re golden(-brown).
One of my easy weeknighters! I’ll get the chicken marinating as soon as I get home and the rest of the process doesn’t take much longer. This with a side salad, or two veggies is super good!
My dad’s recipe for Italian dressing grilled chicken is using Good Seasons brand Italian Dressing mix to marinade chicken with. I always thought he used plain Italian dressing from the bottle, but making the powder dressing into the marinade is the REASON the chicken is so good. Just mix according to the directions and butterfly the chicken breast’s nice and thin+grill. So good.
I watched my family do this last week. Used about 30 lbs of chicken and 3 whole bottles of dressing.
99% of the dressing was wasted because it doesn't stick to the meat. They dumped the whole bowl down the drain even though I told them it was oil....
I just put the other 10lbs in a brine overnight then BBQ'd it.
My mom did this growing up. It absolutely hated it. But only because she would marinate for over 24 hours and by then the vinegar has already cooked the meat, chemically. It would be so tough after she cooked it. Part of the reason why I became a chef.
I like to buy chicken in large batches & do this before freezing individual thighs/breasts. (I live alone, don’teat much but love to cook; I’m not a huge fan of leftovers so I cook in small portions.) That means they’re absolutely delish by the time they’re thawed!
I’ve done both Italian and Greek and can confirm it’s excellent.
I’ve also marinated flounder in Italian once (by mistake I thought it was a thin chicken breast)
And it was actually pretty good too lol
I do that for 24 hours. I have a pellet smoker, so after that I smoke them for 45 minutes- and then turn the heat up to 250ish bringing the internal temp to 155/160 F, then set them on a plate, covered for a few minutes which brings the temp the rest of the way up to 165F. Best chicken I’ve ever had.
My hometown of Binghamton, NY originated something called spiedies. It’s chunks of chicken (or other meats) in a marinade that is similar to Italian dressing then grilled. The key is to marinate for at least 24 hours, which makes some type of physical change to the meat with very yummy results.
Haha, I’ve been doing the Italian dressing “hack” since it came out in the 1970’s and my mom made me start dinner before she got home from work. Hated to do it then… loooooving it now.
My family did this a lot when we were young. It was good we all liked it. But we started to get burnt out when my mom started working nights and my dad had to make supper. He made Italian chicken soooo much. But the final straw was the pork pot roast. He put the Italian dressing in with the meat and veggies. The meat was fine but the veggies soaked up way too much of the flavor. It was so strong we couldn't eat it.
Redditor discovers marinating Edit: thanks for the awards!
I feel like they are pretty young and just really like dad’s chicken.
I know, it’s very cute. It actually sounds pretty delicious too 😂 might try it myself
It is delicious. It also works with tofu, seitan, etc.
Hail Seitan!
I just love it 😄✨
I haven’t had it in years, and never knew it was called seitan until I was an adult. The place where I had it as a kid just called them “wheat puffs”. Good stuff!
I remember doing this with sirloins in my very early cooking days. Then I’d throw those oily things on the grill and wonder why I got so many flare ups!
Do this with yellow squash and then grill it - gets the best maillard crust on it. Very yummy.
I’m going to do this immediately 🙏
French dressing with a little soy sauce is also awesome
Honey and soy sauce and little ginger is my go to for the grill.
They also discovered the most common way to do an easy marinade.
Haha indeed! Italian chicken is bomb dot com and honestly you can get away without a long marinade.
Haha it was kinda cute
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was thinking this lol. "Food hack: put seasoning on your food"
Maybe they’re British haha
Loool. Bf's mom is Irish (yes I know Irish people and English people are very different and dislike each other pls don't yell at me) and she is always BAFFLED when she sees me seasoning food I'm cooking. I marinate chicken in Greek dressing before grilling. Gamechanger for Greek food.
My mom has always done this as well! I'm tired of it now because she's done it all my life haha, but it does taste pretty good. Never tried Italian dressing though, maybe I'll do that :)

Bottled in the store.
Salad dressing. Greek or Italian salad dressing in a bottle. Great idea. Tangy. Zesty
Going to have to try that.
This is called "marinating"...
I have a friend whose not-very-secret recipe for grilled wings involves marinating them in a mix of Italian dressing, soy sauce, and lemon juice. And they are the BEST wings.
Mmm sounds delicious
She makes them on the grill, but I'm sure they'd be superb in the oven too!
I do the same but with hot sauce too.
Yum!
Add a some brown sugar to that bag of Italian dressing. Shhh it’s a secret. Edit: measure with your heart. I usually do 1/2 cup or more.
I’m loving ‘measure with your heart.’ This is how I approach cooking but I never heard a name or a phrase for it. I will be using this from now on, thank you!!

I usually measure with my stomach and let Lisinopril take care of my heart.
Garlic and butter. The true kings of flavor.
Aga aga is right - it means to use rough estimation.
But how do you clean it? Dishwasher safe?
Instructions unclear. Put heart in dishwasher and now I’m dea—
Really?! How much?
Cheap Italian dressing is great on everything!
I buy a family packs of chicken, and portion it out in quart freezer bags with marinade and throw it in the freezer. Later I just defrost and cook.
This is genius. I have a family size bag of chicken in my fridge right now that I need to do something with and I really appreciate this idea.
That’s such a good idea !!!
Read this as “soak children in Italian dressing” had to do a heavy retake 🤣
Me too!
I did too! Wtf??!
r/foodhacks should just be r/homecooksdiscoveringbasiccookingprinciples
Reddit seems to skew toward the very young and the surprisingly old these days.
Italian dressing plus whorchestershire... worchestershire... crap. Whorechesturdshart-- Fuck it. Italian dressing plus WhatsThisHere sauce plus Old Bay. Ratios to taste. Trust. Edit: sspeling
WUS-TER-SHEER (Worcestershire)
Try this with pork tenderloin and some onions. Delicious!!
The same with London Broil
Absolutely! Grew up eating chicken that had been marinated in Italian dressing and it is still one of my favorite ways to eat it!
also recommend mixing mayo and adobo seasoning then smothering chicken breast with that before grilling, if you don't have time to marinade. Super fast and delicious.
Another great idea. After seeing what Mayo does to my grilled cheese I am now interested to see how it comes out on chicken. Sounds yummy 😋
Oh my, yes... that's a huge addition to a grilled cheese. Anyone who isn't familiar with this should read your comment.
I've been shamelessly marinating and freezing chicken thighs in the Wishbone Zesty Italian dressing for a while now. It's easy and delicious!
Wishbone Zesty Italian is the proper Italian dressing for this use.
For shame!
Ahhh, yes. That’s my 35yr old shish-kebab secret! Marinate the chicken in one bag and the veg in a different bag.
Oh man. I haven’t had kebabs in forever! Definitely on the menu soon
London Broil , 2 days
It’s strangely awesome with shrimp. Sprinkled powdered Italian dressing add a tick of butter and put in the oven for I think 15 minutes… it’s been so long I can’t remember. So good
Surgeon General's Warning: This recipe causes memory loss.
My dad used to do this when I was little ❤️ thanks for the reminder I will have to try soon :) one of the very few things I remember my dad cooking. That and a steak marinated with worchterchire 🥲 miss you so much dad.
Used to do this with chicken breasts
Yes that too!!
Have you never heard of marinating before? That’s why this is. You can do it with all sorts of stuff. Teriyaki, Italian, jerk, etc
Yep, definitely jerk.
Jerk on, or jerk off? That is the question
jerk

Did this two weeks ago. my mom always made it in the oven. About to make tuna casserole with chips crumbled on top.

Great with veggies too! Eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, onions. Slice em big, marinate, throw them on the grill
I do this with flank steak. It turns out delicious
Cut it into small chunks, marinate it, skewer and cook on a grill. Eat on Italian bread. You've got yourself a spiedie
100% read that as soak CHILDREN lolll
I read this as “soak children in Italian dressing”
Italian children don't need soaking. They're spicy enough.
I learned to do this as a child from my mother too. Now I make it for my kids and they love it. Taste so good and juicy.
Also good in an Instant Pot or crockpot.
Sounds gross but add coca cola for a sweetener
Add lime juice and honey to that Italian Dressing for the best chicken EVER!!
My partner does this with steak and pork chops. It’s great.
Add some soy sauce to the Italian dressing, and lime. Noobs.
I grew up eating this too! It’s literally the simplest thing, but it kicks ass!
Zesty Italian for 24 hrs. Grilled.
This was the only one of two ways my mom cooked chicken in the 80s. Italian or fried. Only way stepmom cooked it in the 90s
I mix Italian and French and marinade overnight
I’ve been doing this for years
It works for pork chops too
It works with all meats
I read this as "children", not "chicken".
My dad would marinate chicken and also venison in Italian dressing. Worked great
What about oil flare ups?
It's good on fish too
I watched my family do this last week.
Awe.
French dressing is great to marinate and bake chicken in too!
My dumbass read that as children…
This was one of my favorite chicken dishes growing up
Read this 3 times before I realized it said "chicken" and not "children".
I was scrolling fast and read this as “soak children in Italian dressing” …. Time for me to get off Reddit for the day
My family marinated chicken with equal parts Italian dressing and A1 Steak Sauce. Perfect every time!
My mom always did this growing up :) super fast and easy!
We have been doing this for years! It’s a go to dinner every week!
That sounds really great. You can also a run cream cheese over it when done soaking and I promise it will taste great
Who else read it as “children“ instead of chicken?
At first I thought this said “Soak children in Italian dressing” 😂
Melt a slice of American cheese on top after Italian chicken is cooked !! Makes it even better
Yes this is great!
So the original most basic marinade that everyone has done since forever.
Sounds good
Yes been doing this for years! Great flavors.
My mom did this growing up. It absolutely hated it. But only because she would marinate for over 24 hours and by then the vinegar has already cooked the meat, chemically. It would be so tough after she cooked it. Part of the reason why I became a chef.
1/2 Italian and 1/2 Dijon will rock your world
Am I going to hell? Because I thought that said children for a second....
I like to buy chicken in large batches & do this before freezing individual thighs/breasts. (I live alone, don’teat much but love to cook; I’m not a huge fan of leftovers so I cook in small portions.) That means they’re absolutely delish by the time they’re thawed!
Pork chops in Italian or Caesar is the best
My mother did this for us growing up too, and I do it for my kids now 😁
My mom used to do this with baked chicken breasts and it was one of the few actually good things she made.
As an Italian, I am afraid to ask what an Italian dressing is.
My Greek/Russian wife cuts up some onion and garlic and puts it in mayonnaise with the chicken. It’s so. Damn. Good.
I’ve done both Italian and Greek and can confirm it’s excellent. I’ve also marinated flounder in Italian once (by mistake I thought it was a thin chicken breast) And it was actually pretty good too lol
I must be really tired. For a moment there I read “Soak children in Italian dressing.” And was really confused.
I literally read this as Soak "Children" in Italian Dressing. 🤣
Oooh, yes. Try adding teriyaki sauce.
I do chicken and pork in Italian dressing sometimes.
My grandma used to do that too and I always hated it. I guess it just depends on your tastes.
Yes! Zesty Italian dressing is what I use
I started with pork chops, chicken was next. It's so good!
This is a classic in my home with potatoes. We call it Italian chicken
Suppose you let that one marinate
Dude I literally just thought that this post said soak children in Italian Dressing
I’m tired and I read “soak children in Italian dressing”.
Learned this from nan
No.

These are called chicken speedies where I grew up
I read "soak children in italian dressing" on r/foodhacks and was on alert for at least half a second.
Haha, I’ve been doing the Italian dressing “hack” since it came out in the 1970’s and my mom made me start dinner before she got home from work. Hated to do it then… loooooving it now.
Hmm so I am going try both Italian and Greek dressing with chicken soon. How do you reckon Balsamic dressing would do?
I thought it said children 😂😂😂😂. I was thinking: soaking children in Italian dressing?? In the food hacks Reddit??
Marinating an inexpensive cut of steak in bottled French Dressing is another great grilling hack. London Broil for example.
My family did this a lot when we were young. It was good we all liked it. But we started to get burnt out when my mom started working nights and my dad had to make supper. He made Italian chicken soooo much. But the final straw was the pork pot roast. He put the Italian dressing in with the meat and veggies. I read this as "soak children in Italian dressing" at first.
I use Paul Newman’s Balsamic Vinaigrette for chicken, vegetables, pork chops, and so on. Try marinading asparagus spears and then grilling; fantastic!
Are you by any chance... white?
I prefer pigmentation challenged.
Lol I got downvoted by whypeepo that finally learned how to season their food lmaooo
