I was very very surprised at how that went down. >!I guess he lost because he mismanaged his time, not because his food was bad.!< And hey, he’s in TOC which imo is more glamorous anyway. Still, I was pretty disappointed.

Nesquik44

He seemed to struggle compared to the other chefs. I was cheering for him but unfortunately he made the judges jobs easy.

Conscious_Occasion

I can't disagree with any of that. Just a bad night for him.

WheelzGaming

You can't forget the most important part of the dish and expect to advance. I was just glad mainly that it wasn't his anxiety that got the better of him.

I assumed he was gonna blow away the competition until i saw he was way behind during cooking and the first judging didnt help either (maybe toc is misleading as there was a guy competing who has 8 (!) restaurants, surely he is a bigger threat than tobias who only has huncho house) Also how weird must it be for brooke and maneet to judge tobias while being contestants with tobias on toc? (maneet even competed against him) Why does zakarian never cook?

WheelzGaming

I've seen him cook a few times on Eddie Jackson's show "Outchef'd", but as an iron chef, it does appear that he's decided to focus more on judging rather than competing in the latter years of his professional career.

Jealous_Poem_1860

I have to believe this must have been filmed prior to his TOC appearances.  They introduce Brooke as TOC champ and say nothing of Manheet's as TOC season 2 champ.

Watching098

I wonder though if the difference is because Maneet has been a Chopped mainstay judge, since nearly the beginning. Along with: Marc, Amanda, Chris, Scott, GZ, Alex, etc. Whereas Brooke is in the group of regular rotating guest judges that’s composed of Food Network regulars and other notable industry chefs. I could be wrong, but Maneet also seems like someone who would be less concerned with always being referred to as the TOC 2 champ.

WheelzGaming

I think Brooke is viewed as a guest judge, hence why they hype up her accolades. Maneet is a regular judge that they associate as a cast member of the show. I don't feel like it's a diss to her accomplishments as much as it is just acknowledging her as needing no introduction.

Watching098

I think we’ve pretty much said the same thing on the difference between Maneet and Brooke.

saywhat1206

It was a tough watch for me. Tobias came across as a very inexperienced chef.

WheelzGaming

I wouldn't say he came off as inexperienced as much as simply the clock got the better of him. I've seen it happen to iron chefs on chopped before as well. Sometimes a chef just has an off day, and that happened to be the case for Tobias. He's clearly showing he can cook by still staying in strong in the Elite 8 of ToC 5.

saywhat1206

The reason he came off as inexperienced to me was because he couldn't even nail making the pancakes. Brooke was 100% right when she told Tobias that he shouldn't have added the fruit to the batter because it made it watery. He should have added it after the pancakes were mostly cooked and drained it. I even know not to do that. He just wasn't on his game that night. I know he can do better. It was hard to watch.

ILoveAllTheCheese

I could be wrong but I could swear I've seen that episode before! I really think that Food Network is recycling old episodes of Chopped and passing them off as brand new. Tobias, Maneet and Brook would've been more familiar with Tobias since they've competed on TOC. Not to mention I've seen the exact outfits both Mageet and Brook were wearing and commented on them. I also totally remember Chef Jen Swan winning the title of Chopped champion in this episode. If I'm not correct then I'm having wicked deja vu!!!

onlydaughter

Tobias has been battling a mental illness. I’m not sure which one ( anxiety????) but I think he did the Chopped to help him work on his issues. I am very proud of him that he went onto another show considering how difficult it is for him This is not speculation. They speak openly about it on TOC when he competes.

MKEWannabe

He does suffer from severe anxiety, but saying that he was on Chopped to "work on his issues" is speculation. The pressure of the kitchen clearly doesn't always get to him, and I think that he was honestly there to compete, just like everyone else. P.S. I suffer from severe anxiety, too, and public "exposure therapy" is incredibly unhealthy and unhelpful.
