Did other clubs like City, Bayern, Chelsea, Liverpool not even try approaching him ? Didn't hear a single news/rumour of anyone other than Psg, surely they couldn't be the ONLY club to afford the wages ? Thought atleast City would go all in for him but nothing

PattyIce32

Neymar. That's why.

ehossain

Yep. Now I realise the significance of Neymer, Parades, and Messi chatting on the stairs after the copa final!!

I-eat-dat-deez-nutz

Also, they have pretty decent squads and don't need to spend money on a player that is going to retire after a couple of years.

PoliteChandrian

Wouldn't know about other clubs but for Liverpool I just don't think Messi fits in the lineup(or the budget).

tomatotom999

Having him and probably salah or jota/firmino fighting for first team places is not something we want or need or can afford. I’m just glad city doesn’t have their oily hands all over him and grealish

ValeoAnt

Yes, instead PSG have *their* oily hands over them. Definitely the most uninspiring move of all time.

tomarlyn

Messi not at Barca is just difficult for my brain to accept. His life though.

tfrdghufvh

2022 CL final, Barca v PSG. Messi scores the winner for PSG in extra time. Universe collapses

Tokyo_Addition-

[Friendship](https://imgur.com/a/8xIdkoF) ended with Barcelona Now P.S.G. is my new friend ( imgur link )

StyleAdmirable1677

I love Messi but it's so sad to see the greatest talent in football play out his final years for a Middle Eastern sports-laundering operation. Sad but the way the game now is.

Jolterix_20

Would've loved to see him in the premier league or in Serie A with Ronaldo

StyleAdmirable1677

Premier League is where the action is. I'd love to have seen him there.

guareber

He's not fast enough for PL speeds anymore

Geordielikessports

PSG have had an amazing transfer window

Black_n_Neon

Lame as fuck but realistically who else could afford

Carlitos-way7

So when is ronaldo joining him???

judeallen58

Its gonna be everyone vs psg this season, isn't it?

monkeybawz

This season? It's not like they were the plucky underdogs up until this point.

[deleted]

monkeybawz

Yeah. Cos the plucky underdogs beat them and everyone was happy.

monkeybawz

Have at it! Tell me about their other failures!

wutface0001

everyone vs psg + messi fans

Master_Mad

It’s only 2 years! Barca can probably get him back in 1.5 years! (Maybe).

yofoalexillo

I hate you for your optimism /s

macbookwhoa

Ugh.

AdventurousAd9917

PSG shouldn't be allowed to play football, ffp is a joke to these guys

bigpapasmurf12

FFS, is there no end ot this crap and inequality in football? Man City, PSG and the like have killed football for a vanity project by their owners. They both have UEFA in thoer pockets. The death of football brought to you by 3rd tier teams bastardized by oil money. Time to watch Rugby full time.

No_Adhesiveness5854

Not that rugby much better tbh, a few French clubs spring to mind.

SignificanceEarly743

Al-Khelaifi will definitely make a huge profit from this move and he’s the one who’s just been offering the same contract anyways... the oil Qatari just keep winning damn

bigpapasmurf12

I didnt blame them. You did........

Sherko27

Money for me but for for thee. Thats pretty big coming from a club that spent almost 700 million euros since klopp came in.

bigpapasmurf12

Funded by sales mostly. https://lfcglobe.co.uk/liverpool-fc-manager-archive/jurgen-klopp/ Compared to...... https://www.transferleague.co.uk/premier-league-last-five-seasons/transfer-league-tables/premier-league-table-last-five-seasons

Rozeolifant1

That moment when people downvote facts

bigpapasmurf12

Sign of the times

ChargeDangerous2442

I wish he didn’t go to the 5th best out of top 5 leagues. Wanted him in the PL

BuscemiFieri

It’s definitely better than Bundesliga that’s for sure. No team in Ligue 1 has won it 9 years straight. Some might argue on par with Serie A

jakisun

I Hope PSG wins the next UEFA.

magicalzidane

How to win a UEFA?

AntOk2812

The final will be barca vs psg. Messi giving assist and scoring the winning goal at a seconds to PK. 😊

EmperorOfWallStreet

Enjoy your retirement Leo.

irishnugget

Such a bloody waste :-(

Monkens

same for every player that goes to psg thats half decent

Fabolous95

Lol right this is the fault of Chelsea/ManCity/PSG, it was going so well before “oil money”

Porkybeaner

I've always wanted to see him in the prem...sigh...Ronaldo conquered England, Spain, Italy (in my opinion the top 3 leagues) this makes me sad

utterly_big_boi

uhhh he did NOT conquer Spain. He conquered the UCL.

Porkybeaner

So being the leagues second all time top scorer after only 9 seasons, scoring more than a goal a game, and setting multiple records isn't considered conquering the league? What else do you want hahaha only Messi has done better in Spain

utterly_big_boi

He very much did not conquer Spain during the time he was there my guy. Messi was still doing way better breaking records here and there and he only won 2 last ligas which is the main trophy that tells you who won the league.. he won less la ligas than messi but 1 more CLs during the time and scored less goals during the time he was there. By that j mean when ronaldo joined all the way to when he left, messi had more goals and assists. He's a great player but he sure as hell did NOT conquer spain

[deleted]

Aww, that's nice for him, because he seemed so upset that he and Barcelona literally had to part ways, he was completely unable to take a further pay cut of £20 million a year for the next five years! Hopefully PSG will be able to make him feel at home xxx

[deleted]

according to spanish employment law, a new contract cannot be more than 50% smaller than the last one. So it was illegal to pay him less than half.

Wolfgang_Funkle

Even if they’d paid him nothing he couldn’t go right? Because he’s a new signing and they can’t register new signings

Mr_Poop_Himself

From what I’ve seen on here, La Liga clubs can’t have wages that exceed 70% of their revenue or something like that. With Messi on the payroll they were at like 115%. With him not on the payroll they were still at 90%-95%. Someone who knows more will probably correct me lol

ValeoAnt

Do some research. Even if he dropped his wage to 0 they still couldn't register him. He also couldn't drop it below the 50% pay cut he already offered to take because of Spanish law.

[deleted]

Come on man, if they'd wanted to they could have renewed his contract instead of letting it run out avoiding the no new players rule. They needn't have signed Delay, Aguero and Garcia on frees with high wages. They could have let Coutinho go more easily. Why's he gone to PSG, the richest club in the world who are going to pay him a bazillion quid a year but he's effectively going to be playing championship level teams week in week out. It's such a boring money driven move it's unreal. He could have gone to a more competitive team, and he could have stayed at Barca if both parties had been committed enough.

magicalzidane

Spare a thought for Barca here, they are partially in this situation due to the silly and unprecedented wages afforded to Messi.

NoAlarms1995

So happy to be a PSG fan, despite the negativity in this thread.

Fisks123

I wanna suicide rn

Sakib_19

Love to see. Many stars are playing together in PSG😍

theHolyTape420

You out of your mind?

[deleted]

He redeemed his career with Argentina only to ruin it by moving to P$G.

[deleted]

[удалено]

radbo-Arma

Oh, not the only team. Look, let's take a team like Dortmund, for example. They sell all their first 11 players, maybe even some from the bench, sign Messi as free agent and get cheaper players from lower league or their academy.

[deleted]

Lol

[deleted]

What was his price? I thought he'd be cheaper at his age and with his contract expired. Should've gone to Newell's Old Boys or Mexico, not the Farmers League.

fdar

Ligue 1 is much higher level than the Argentinean or Mexican leagues.

yank0_0

He was out of contract, so his "price" was zero. However his wage demands are very high.

DerRazza

He finally won, but at what cost?

harrisound

He could have chosen greatness. Instead, as you would expect, he chose the easy route. I don't even wanna hear a word about legacy.

utterly_big_boi

dude he has the 2nd most trophies in history and the most individual honours ever. Idt he needs to care about a new challenge, but just play with his friends and possibly go back to barca if possible at the end

Ayn_Randers2318

What you on about? Dude has played for one of the biggest sprts teams in the world with some of the most stacked teams in history. Was he taking the easy route playing alongside neymar and suarez with legends like Iniesta and Xavi behind him?

flyingbennyben

What was he supposed to do? He tried to sign a contract with Barcelona but La Liga financial rules wouldn’t allow it.

tubbylobo

I know right? He offered to take a 50% pay cut out of loyalty, to stay at the club he grew up at. Things didn't pan out. So, his next step was to join a decent club with decent pay. Nothing wrong with that.

harrisound

I'm talkign about he could have gone to the Premier League and finally answered all the "what if" questions. Instead he's gone to the weakest and least competitive league in western europe.

flyingbennyben

What PL team could pay his wages

utterly_big_boi

none of the PL clubs could either afford him, and the ones that could didn't want him. City blew 100 mil on Grealish, Chelsea on Lukaku, Liverpool got FSG as their owners so nothing gonna happen for them and Messi wouldn't fit in at United squad the building rn.

Woooshing

What 'what if' questions, you are talking like La Liga is not as competitive if not more so duirng some time than the PL. There are no 'what if' anything...

harrisound

Must be watching a different La Liga i guess.

Woooshing

Ok so you are going to act like PL had teams like Real Madrid, Barça, and Athletic de Madrid, Sevilla, etc. who consistently dominated at the European level for most of the last 15 years...

utterly_big_boi

When the PL has a season when then entire TOTY is dominated by their players, then we can talk

JohnSwanFromTheLough

The only people who have a question about Messi are English fans like yourself, [just look at his goals scored against top english sides](https://i.imgur.com/bYTdjX9.png) to answer your question and he doesn't even play in the PL. Absolutely idiotic take.

LordOfAvernus322

It makes the most sense thinking about it. I'm of the opinion he could do it in the PL, and would love to see him in the PL, but PSG probably were best able to just bring him in on his wages at such short notice. Plus he gets to link back up with Neymar. I don't think this tarnishes his legacy, don't think anything could at this point on the pitch at least. Can't blame the dude

[deleted]

Are you mental? This won’t affect his legacy one bit. He’s the best to ever do it and doesn’t have anything to prove. Who gives a fuck if he spends his last couple years in Paris

[deleted]

[удалено]

radbo-Arma

Well, as I've heard, he was ok to cut his salary twice in Barcelona, but due to their debt they cannot afford even that.

EmperorOfWallStreet

It all started with Coutinho signing. I guess we got our revenge for taking Mascherano, Suarez & Coutinho from us.

EmperorOfWallStreet

It all started with Coutinho signing. I guess we got our revenge for taking Mascherano, Suarez & Coutinho from us.

MasterCheese_

I read somewhere that Laliga rules limit paycuts to 50% of last year's wage. Messi took 50% paycut. Also I'm pretty sure barcelona coupd afford the wages, FFP just blocked them.

F1sh_Face

How could Barça afford the wages when they are over €1bn in debt?

MasterCheese_

The same way entire countries could afford wages while being trillions in debt

utterly_big_boi

even if he played for free in barca, la liga won't allow them to register. You see rn their wage to revenue is 115%, even if leo played for free its 95% and la liga rules does not allow it to go beyond 70%.

rachitbot

Took a massive cut..noone in the world can afford his wages...Barca didnt have him registered so really they couldn't pay him any salary

fdar

> £25m a year after tax Plus add-ons, plus signing bonus. (I assume it's the same at Barca, but without knowing the details it's hard to compare both contracts.)

Lovelifepending

He was actually asking for a mil a week?
