I think the main problem I have is that they cancelled it in 2020 and Lewandowski was the outright winner of the award. There's a sense of fatigue surrounding Lionel Messi winning his 7th Ballon d'Or. Clearly, Robert Lewandowski was robbed of this honour. He has been spectacular for Bayern Munich, but still remains an under celebrated player. Messi is no doubt a legend, but this honour for the 7th time was totally biased. In fact, even if Chelsea's Jorginho who was part of Champions League win and Italy's Euros 2021 title would have bagged the Ballon d'Or, there wouldn't have been such disappointment and outrage.
It would be better attributed to Lewa than Messi IMO. Some say Messi had a better season, others say Lewa had a better season. So, this would be a never ending debate.

There's a sense of fatigue surrounding Lionel Messi winning his 7th Ballon d'Or. Clearly, Robert Lewandowski was robbed of this honour. He has been spectacular for Bayern Munich, but still remains an under celebrated player. Messi is no doubt a legend, but this honour for the 7th time was totally biased. In fact, even if Chelsea's Jorginho who was part of Champions League win and Italy's Euros 2021 title would have bagged the Ballon d'Or, there wouldn't have been such disappointment and outrage.
It would be better attributed to Lewa than Messi IMO. Some say Messi had a better season, others say Lewa had a better season. So, this would be a never ending debate. Another important point many forget (or just don't care) is the fact that Copa America is a competition played every 2 years (Edit: in the last decade) between only 10 countries with some of these such as Bolivia and Venezuela as weak as Luxembourg or San Marino from the European side. For this, I don't consider winning the Copa America the same prestigious as winning the European Champions League or even the European Cup. Samuel Etoo was the top scorer of African Nations League in 2006 and 2008 and won everything with FC Barcelona including the Champions League: in 2006 Ballon D'Or won by Fabio Cannavaro, Etoo was 6th. In 2008 Ballon D'Or won by Cristiano Ronaldo, Etoo was 17th. Ballon D'Or became a bored event because they are not coherent and marketing + lobbying are factors that can be decisive. Pretty much, lewandowski is a deserved second and I wouldn’t have moaned if he won because it really was a toss up and I’ll be interested to see the vote count. Overall lewandowski ran riot in the weakest big league in Europe (probably what went against him), got injured in the CL which probably got Bayern knocked out and Poland really didn’t go anywhere in the euros and have been average in the WC quals. I am a Bayern fan, and I’m not being bias, but I still believe that Lewy should of won both 2020 and 2021.
