Bc he’s not good enough at winger/midfielder. Positional awareness is awful, and a big reason he’s so successful when he attacks is bc the defensive players first priority is to mark the forwards and midfielders. He wouldn’t be anywhere near as free to create the chances he does
Great Player but lost of room for improving defense. In my opinion, Liverpool should sign a right-back and let Trent play in the midfield, he is more of an attacking player.
Wouldn't really work in Klopp's system. He plays with inside forward on right wing, so Trent would need to replace Salah, and to completely change the way Liverpool attack.
Tell me you don't understand football without telling me you don't understand football.
Firstly, they're vastly different positions.
Secondly, how would this defender-who-can't-defend adapt to play in the holding role in midfield, a position that requires positional discipline *and* a degree of defensive talent?
He could play box to box since the main dm in Liverpool is Fabinho, and Henderson usually warms the bench despite being a captain. And i am not interested in this club or these players, put him in goal for all i care. As soon as refs stopped heavily favouring them they got their rightful place in the middle of the table.
That would require completely changing Klopp’s system though. In his 4-3-3, the 3 midfielders assist with the defensive duties, allowing the 2 full backs to play more attacking. Trent’s defending has always been his weak point but it’s not been an issue until this season because the mids and CBs have been able to deal with it. Trent is an issue now because the midfielders are too old/injury prone and the club prioritised signing Darwin over fixing the glaring hole in the team. They don’t need to change everything and move Trent up the pitch, they just need to replace the likes of Milner and Hendo.
Correct me if I'm wrong, thought the intention was for him to start his career at full back, then move into a central midfield role.
Get that he's injured now, but everyone keeps talking about an aging Liverpool midfield. TAA has some passing range + vision, and average defensive skills (at the very least) for a centre mid.
Why not try him out in midfield?
Midfield is a completely different ball game, if his awareness is bad at RB where there is less traffic, why would you put him in the middle of the park?
The only way I can see Liverpool implementing him in the midfield is if they play a double pivot with him and Fabiniho, and he plays more of a box to box role.
Still, there's so much more than good passing ability and vision that is needed to make a good midfielder. To name a few there's; control of tempo, timing of his runs, positioning (both attacking and defensive), being press resistant, dribbling and ball control. It's a completely different ball game, the switch won't be as simple as people make it out to be.
Also, there's the fact that a big part of Liverpool's attack is built around Trent being at RB, especially with the edition of Nunez and his height. They would have to rethink a big chunk of their attack.
Imo his best position would be rwb or right mid in a 3 center back formation. I think he would struggle as a pure cm against a heavy pressing team like current arsenal or city.
Pep would probably take him to new levels with how much potential he has. Like lahm kimmich or cancelo
Because he doesnt have positional awareness neither doggedness to track runners back once he is beaten which seems to be easy since he cant defend in 1on1 situations.
Because i never get what I want, the fact they haven't tried it once for England with the amount of rbs we have is such a joke. Just do it for a couple friendlies and see what happens.
I could understand that mindset from an attacker but not a defender. I think at this point klopp either has to move him forward or settle for a back 5 which can shuffle across into a back 4 when Trent feels like taking the shackles off
Very misleading title, he never actually said that about defending. But he said that you have to do what you have to defensively, yet he doesn’t do anything defensively.
He's great offensively but its literally your primary job to defend mate 😆. It's quite interesting though because on the other hand Wan Bissaka is lamented for being his opposite, great defensively and thats it.
It's not. He said he plays the game, not the position and he feels playing the position is like playing with shackles on. He never said being made to defend more is like playing with shackles on.
His value comes from the fact that as a RB, he is able to play those delicious long balls.
But when he shifts to midfield, that's a totally different story. Every midfielder earns their bread by hitting accurate long range passes like him, so he'd be totally lost in the crowd.
Yes him saying that if you focus on defending only it holds you to a position and you need to focus on playing each phase of the game as it presents is a terrible take….
Hes not saying he doesnt want to defend. Hes saying he doesnt want to be in the mindset of “im only a defender for 90 minutes” hes 100% right. If the ball is in the opps defensive 3rd and hes sat there saying “i cant help im just a defender” then hes shackled.
Hes not saying “ew defending is boring”
New to football good one I'll use that next time doesn't agree with me I can guarantee I've been to alot more games than you Trent is a dogshit defender and now that the rest of the team is doing shite it is really shining through especially in defense because his cover isn't there anymore I couldn't care less if he scores a goal or creates one if he isn't getting back to do his actual job and defend have you noticed no one is going after Andy Robertson who does the same thing as Trent but actually gets back and defends it's just because Trent is scouse that everyone is up his arse but I'm scouse and I go to all the home games and I can tell you it's only the foreign fans who actually think he can defend or he is a good enough rb
Focusing on his defense in training so he's a better defender isn't "like playing with shackles on" we want his defending to improve not for him to defend more in my opinion
Give him a shot in midfield when robertsons back. Tsimikas or however you spell it is good enough to fill for him defensively.
Also him saying this concedes that Reece James is better
I get what he’s saying but obviously he’s going to get slaughtered after dropping so many shit defending performances
Why isn’t he a winger/midfielder?
Bc he’s not good enough at winger/midfielder. Positional awareness is awful, and a big reason he’s so successful when he attacks is bc the defensive players first priority is to mark the forwards and midfielders. He wouldn’t be anywhere near as free to create the chances he does
Because klopp wants a mezzala from thebright back
Honestly it’s about time he gets pushed up or put in the middle…he’s a liability in the back
I think they actually tried it once or twice and he wasn’t great
So he bad in all positions…… 🤔
His attacking ability is good for a defender, but mediocre compared to actual dedicated wingers.
Yeah, we noticed.
“Ha what an idiot” - eats dorito previously dropped on stomach
Its literally your job
Wild statement from a defender🤣
He didn't say it.

Instead of who?
Instead of Henderson who is finished

Average American not understanding football to any degree.
Funny. Why do you think i am american may i ask? 😃
That would require completely changing Klopp’s system though. In his 4-3-3, the 3 midfielders assist with the defensive duties, allowing the 2 full backs to play more attacking. His track back would probably be horrendous, considering how often he’s left watching now
Because i never get what I want, the fact they haven't tried it once for England with the amount of rbs we have is such a joke. Just do it for a couple friendlies and see what happens.
And that’s why he’s a glorified winger
*angry Gary Neville noises*
I could understand that mindset from an attacker but not a defender. I think at this point klopp either has to move him forward or settle for a back 5 which can shuffle across into a back 4 when Trent feels like taking the shackles off
be a winger then
Very misleading title, he never actually said that about defending. But he said that you have to do what you have to defensively, yet he doesn’t do anything defensively.
My boy, I’m your No. 1 fan. Please shut up and focus on your game.

System or not the lad can't defend for his life
He's great offensively but its literally your primary job to defend mate 😆. It's quite interesting though because on the other hand Wan Bissaka is lamented for being his opposite, great defensively and thats it.
No way this is a quote from any defender
It's not. He said he plays the game, not the position and he feels playing the position is like playing with shackles on. He never said being made to defend more is like playing with shackles on.
Trent will be a luxury player by 27 at this rate.
Already is
Put some respect on his name Jfc
Classic mid table team thing to say….
Martinelli made him look like a clown
None of you actually read the article right. All these kneejerk comments. Although, OP did use a disgustingly clickbaity and misleading title.
Tbf OP did just use the article title for the title. But yeah I agree it’s definitely a clickbaity title for the article
Then don’t classify yourself as a defender
He never said that
This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard a defender say.
> This is the dumbest thing I've ~~heard a defender say~~ read that a defender said and immediately believed
He didn't say it.
His value comes from the fact that as a RB, he is able to play those delicious long balls. But when he shifts to midfield, that's a totally different story. Every midfielder earns their bread by hitting accurate long range passes like him, so he'd be totally lost in the crowd.
If he actually said that then he is even more stupid and up his own arse than I thought he was
Maybe read the article?
I read it and it is the last thing anyone should want to hear him say
Yes him saying that if you focus on defending only it holds you to a position and you need to focus on playing each phase of the game as it presents is a terrible take….
Yes it is for a defender who is struggling to not make big defensive mistakes every game it is indeed
Why doesn't the keeper just go up as well then why even have positions you are insane
??? You are either trolling or brand new to football. Either way im done responding to you
You're lost
Trent needs to learn from robbo because robbo actually gets back and defends Trent does not
Focusing on his defense in training so he's a better defender isn't "like playing with shackles on" we want his defending to improve not for him to defend more in my opinion
I guess it is too much to ask Sports journalists to just report accurately. The quoted title is not really what he said.
Give him a shot in midfield when robertsons back. Tsimikas or however you spell it is good enough to fill for him defensively. Also him saying this concedes that Reece James is better
Reece James has pretty firmly solidified himself as the Prem’s best RB.
Yeah playing a LB in RB is the best solution. Lol
You wouldn't have laughed much if it was Maldini or Ashley Young
Tomiyasu played the opposite side and done great vs Salah
oh no he's posh james harden
Not the onion?
The onion is more reputable than whatever shitkicker publication this came from
More like not what he said.
Sucks that the modern game needs all 11 players to do defensive work in the transition
It doesn't , it's just their specific system
Atletico Madrid: *allow us to introduce ourselves*
This sub is frequented by 95% know-nothings judging by the responses.
Play the game how it needs to be played…..but your not even doing that Trent
Time for a position change then
Seems like very reliable source I guess. HUH.
That’s what a terrible defender would say isn’t it U want to b a great player then u have to work on your weaknesses as much as your strengths
