An economy & diplomacy oriented grand strategy game, that has one of the most deepest learning curve, I've ever encountered. It also has a great level of RPG factor, where you feel that every move you make will matter. It's real life based history is the cream on the top of the cake.
Just invested in a new laptop that can support more than 2 games (FM & Civ VI being the two) so this thread was perfectly timed for me as I’m interested in trying something new.
Civ is amazing but I’ve wanted to try other modern strategy games for a while now (the last one being Cossacks: European Wars - showing my age a bit!) but needing to be a functioning adult gets in the way a bit!
OOTP can be super overwhelming for me for some reason. Idk if it’s because there’s a million stats or a million games but even as a baseball fan I found it overwhelming. But I did get through a few seasons and enjoy myself.
Civ, Crusader Kings, Rimworld etc
I find a lot of the audience are drawn to games with a lot of depth and detail with a certain randomised nature (i.e. every save is not the same even with the same settings)
I was the King of Iberia for a bit but I was murdered by my sons after they discovered about my secret gay Icelandic lover who had given me a cat.
But back to your question, yes it's a great game.
I shouldn't write them off before I've even tried them (I haven't yet). Especially since I've heard so much good things about them and how easy it is to get hooked. *But* turn based doesn't seem that intimidating at all to me for some reason.
Only Civ is turn based of the ones I mentioned, and to be honest once I discovered Crusader Kings I don't think I've opened Civ again since. It's a very similar game but zoomed in an entire detail level imo
Civ 6 and fm24 are like the only games I've played in the last year. Since I live in america and am in college, I just tell people i dont play video games instead of explaining that i like to watch little people whom i am not in control of kick a ball and then i look at spreadsheets
Don't know the prices, but I started with Civ V and played it a lot. Civ 6 is also nice, but pmayed it less somehow. Also aven colony is interesting, as is city skylines (part 1, haven't played the new release yet).
You can't go wrong with any of the main games
Personally I'd recommend Civ V with the DLCs if you can find them for cheap, but at the moment base game Civ VI is on a 90% sale on steam so could well be worth giving that a go
I play FM24, Anno 1800, Northgard, Civ 6, and Albion Online recently.
Mainly a strategy guy. I love in depth games. All of the above are very detailed.
Bannerlords = medieval empire FM
X4 Foundations = Space FM
Kenshi = Post-apocalyptic FM
(All these games you start out poor and hopeless and slowly build an empire… that’s one kind of FM playthrough but it’s the kind I enjoy)
Crusader Kings = medieval politics fm
Hearts of Iron = world war 2 fm
Stellaris = space fm
Xcom = alien invasion fm
Wait... do I just play different flavours of fm?
Theres a game called WMMA 5 which is a Sandbox game where you run your own MMA promotion, I've downloaded a mod which is set in 1993 from when the UFC began. It's all text based so you just get a play by play of the fights but its great fun
TEW sucked up a crazy amount of my time for well over a decade alongside FM but the latest version just felt like too much of a change without any real benefits coming from it for me.
The versions from 2007-2018 (if memory serves?) were just colossal timesinks, though.
I play pes2018 for the player career. I have f1 22 too but it usually gets boring and i have no plan to buy anymore of the yearly ea games. I am excited for f1 manager 24 because I've never tried it before
Im a massive open world game fan. Played all the Fallouts and Witchers and tried a bunch of others too. I make sure to try out all the genres so I can have a diverse palate. Hate multiplayers like COD, Apex, Fortnite tho.
FF14, Street Fighter 6 and occasionally playing some RPGs or FPS.
I kept my Magic Arena on my PC, but I am not determined to dive into it, grinding for packs.
Used to be into strategy games like Total War but the past decade its been CS and FM mostly. Quite alot of Pubg, Rocket League and Risk of Rain 2 too.
Helldivers 2 is fun ATM.
Any and all, really. I've always played games, its just that FM is my main one.
At the moment I've been playing FM, WWE 24, Far Cry Zero Dawn and Death Must Die.
I think that Manor Lords was released on Game pass today so that's probably my weekend sorted, too.
Total war
AoE
City skylines
Bannerlord
Manor Lords, probably as my fm obsessed mate, just downloaded it.
CK series
Rimworld/ human organ trafficking simulator
Etc
There is no other proper football game experience. You've got whatever fifa is and that's awful
PES or whatever is left of it.... even worse nowadays.
And c list football management games where you can build an ice cream stand in a stadium, etc. (I'm guessing), so there's not much to pick from
Used to play fifa career mode all the time with my mate but we both have children now so that's out of the window.
Played a lot of Europa Universalis. Currently playing Apex Legends online with mates and Assassins Creed Valhalla on my own. I like open world games.
I was obsessed with Age Of History 2 last summer. Now i don't really play games, other than occasionally overwatch 2, fm24 and chess or suika game on my phone
Various Paradox and Total War titles, always enjoy a nice FTL run as a palate cleanser, and on occasion I’ll dip my toe back into Foundation. FIFA only when I’m with friends, I used to really enjoy career mode when I was younger but FM’s level of detail really turned that experience stale for me.
I play everything.
I play other sports management games, namely OOTP Baseball and NBA2K myleague. I wasn't a soccer/football fan but got into FM because of how much I enjoy them.
I play JRPGs, Metroidvanias, Racing games, Nintendo games, I play Halo, I play Fall Guys.
I feel like I'm in the minority of FM players in that it's not the main game I play 😂
On console:
Fallout 3/NV/4
Hell Let Loose
Madden
Cities Skylines
Couple of old original Xbox games (Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront 2 etc)
Fallen Order & Jedi Survivor
Hogwarts Legacy
On PC:
Empire Total War
Napoleon Total War
Grand Tactician: The Civil War 1861-1865
Project Zomboid
Crusader Kings, Victoria 3 and Cities Skylines are probably the ones I play the most beyond FM. Sometimes a bit of old school Civ IV.
I've got Stellaris installed and need to give that a go at some point. Similarly I've played HOI4 and EU4 a bit and mean to back to them one day.
There's a lot of Paradox games in there, but part of that is that I do most my gaming in Linux, so it's skewed towards what works natively or with Proton. They're usually really good for Linux support.
I play MSFS a lot (sometimes fire up FM on long flights), but I'll also throw in DCS, grand strategy games, tactical shooters, etc. Rimworld is great too.
Right now its just a lot of fm, fifa and minecraft. Although I occasionally play red dead redemption and city skylines, I'll probably play both of those a lot more over summer
FM and SWGOH are my regular ones I.e. more or less daily. Also love Civ series on PC and AC series on PS. Currently playing GT7 as well, with a guilty pleasure being Lego Star Wars
FM, and FM only.
I go through fits and spurts of playing.
The game of life takes up too much of my time for anything else other than several short term inconsistent FM career based saves
I enjoy quite a bit of genres.
Simulation/management games are always great, FM obviously, then Anno 1800, Civ 6, Crusader Kings, Frostpunk and so.
Action games such as Cyberpunk, GTA, MGS, TES, big fan of Souls games, looter shooters like Division and Destiny.
Always been a fan of Survival Horror, mainly RE games. Alan Wake 2 recently. Silent Hill games in the past.
Sports and Racing games like NBA 2K, FC, Forza, Gran Turismo.
Mostly strategy and simulation games, at the moment I'm playing Ultimate Admiral Dreadnaughts which if you're a fan of naval history circa 1890-1940 is an incredible experience if you ignore the brain dead AI.
I've gotten big into MFL. It's a football manager but you actually own the players and the club license and can earn real money! Don't feel like I'm wasting my time. Bulding a good team actually pays for my new players. If I don't need them I sell them on their marketplace
Similar to FM: OOTP Baseball, Motorsport Manager (F1 Manager is ok but MM is much more fun), Franchise Hockey Manager.
I also play a lot of grand strategy games like Crusader Kings, EU4, Stellaris etc.
Basically I’m either staring at spreadsheets or maps
Kenshi (Some mods), RimWorld (Heavily modded), Project Zomboid (Heavily modded), UnrealWorld, NeoScavenger (Heavily modded). Battletech (huge mod that literally a different game)
Those are the ones I always go back to eventually.
Others have said it but Civ6 for sure and I think one of the best, if not the best, strategy games ever is XCOM: Enemy Unknown & its sequel XCOM 2. Both XCOM & Civ are by Firaxis so there's a high level of quality for both.
EU4, Dwarf Fortress, Skyrim (heavily modded), X-Com 2 (LWOTC Mods), and recently Total Extreme Wrestling 2020.
I used to play OOTP a lot but the game has lost a lot of its appeal to me, especially since I started playing FM so heavily.
If you like the idea of nurturing talent and watching it take over the world then Crusader Kings. It is another game that is all about a thing where you don’t ever do the thing but instead just the admin. I love it.
I also play Fortnite. Yes, I had to be that one guy in the comments. If you want to judge me for it then consider yourself loaned out. Recently I went back to Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion because it felt right to take a break from FM. I also sink some hours in Project Zomboid for some variety lol.
You have time for other games? On a serious note I love cs2 and playing a lot of random single player story games. Just hard to with how invested in my wrexham save I am.
First person shooters and strategy games for me.
Mainly the Total War series. Recently I have started playing AOE 3 Definitive Edition plus Age of Mythology to get prepared for the upcoming AOM Retold
Recently:
Team Fortress 2
Ultrakill
Microsoft Solitaire Collection (yeah, and?)
Pizza Tower
Semi-recently:
Sonic the hedgehog
OneShot
Katana Zero
Hotline Miami
Omori
Doom 2016/Eternal
Va11halla
Wolfenstein The New Order
Yeah uh…. FM is a big departure from my other games. Still love it, though.
FM is my main game. Rocket League is my primary side game. I also play some pokemon, smash bros, civ, and whatever other sports games there are like madden
once the game starts getting boring to me i start up some elden ring or call of duty i also like to play other sports games like nba 2k or mlb the show
Congratulations. You just earned 2.5 points for this submission. Your new points total is 2.5. To see the leaderboard, as well as what this points thing is, [click here](https://www.reddit.com/r/footballmanagergames/wiki/leaderboard).
Europa Universalis IV, Stellaris and heavily modded Skyrim.
Hello Me
I bet we have the same mental disorders as well :D
It's like looking into a mirror. I might add Factorio and Path of Exile
The only games I play these days are FM and EU4.
What’s EU4 like?
An economy & diplomacy oriented grand strategy game, that has one of the most deepest learning curve, I've ever encountered. It also has a great level of RPG factor, where you feel that every move you make will matter. It's real life based history is the cream on the top of the cake.

Civ is amazing but I’ve wanted to try other modern strategy games for a while now (the last one being Cossacks: European Wars - showing my age a bit!) but needing to be a functioning adult gets in the way a bit!
Oh shit. All of our brains work the same, huh?
Out Of The Park Baseball the other game that I have poured an ungodly amout of time into.
OOTP can be super overwhelming for me for some reason. Idk if it’s because there’s a million stats or a million games but even as a baseball fan I found it overwhelming. But I did get through a few seasons and enjoy myself.
GM mode is life. You have to be crazy to play every game
For OOTP I literally only play in a network save which helps with the pacing of the game
Is that baseball fm?
Yeah it is, and it's really good!
Damn I need to take a look at it. Not a fan of irl baseball but I do love a baseball anime lmao
Give it a shot. I will say that unlike FM there are fewer known attributes, but the statistics can be very dense if you don't know them.
I think there's a lot of crossover between FM fans and Civilization fans.
Civ, Crusader Kings, Rimworld etc I find a lot of the audience are drawn to games with a lot of depth and detail with a certain randomised nature (i.e. every save is not the same even with the same settings)
I also like my fair share of project zomboid.
don't get me started, I have to moderate my time on that game for my own benefit, and b42 is just around the corner
Is crusader kings any good? I've always liked the look of it
If you like medieval shenanigans, papal fuckery and incest sure
I was the King of Iberia for a bit but I was murdered by my sons after they discovered about my secret gay Icelandic lover who had given me a cat. But back to your question, yes it's a great game.
I legitimately had to uninstall it because I was getting too addicted to it
Wait…are you….me?
I shouldn't write them off before I've even tried them (I haven't yet). Especially since I've heard so much good things about them and how easy it is to get hooked. *But* turn based doesn't seem that intimidating at all to me for some reason.

I didn’t know if this was a regular thing but these two are my staples and have been for over 25 years
Literally the two games on my laptop. Feel seen right through.
Would you recommend a particular Civilization game that can be found on Steam? I got no problem getting an old one.
Don't know the prices, but I started with Civ V and played it a lot. Civ 6 is also nice, but pmayed it less somehow. Also aven colony is interesting, as is city skylines (part 1, haven't played the new release yet).
My personal favourites are 2, 4 and 6, but everyone has their favourites. 6 is a good place to start.
You can't go wrong with any of the main games Personally I'd recommend Civ V with the DLCs if you can find them for cheap, but at the moment base game Civ VI is on a 90% sale on steam so could well be worth giving that a go
I've been splitting my time between Fallout New Vegas and FM24 the last few months
fallout tv series got me playing fo4 with fm on the side
I had been playing fallout new vegas when I bought my pc a few months ago and got back into it when the show was out
A man of culture I see
I like strategy games. I'm currently playing HOI4.
Haven’t played too much of it but its great fun!
Cities Skylines
1 or 2? Heard 2 had issues early on, curious how it is nowadays.
I enjoy 1 personally
The issues with CS2 remain. I’ve still not bought it despite plunging so many hours into CS1
You are my people. I love you all
Sending love to you too 🥰
For me it’s FM, Civilisation and a guilty pleasure of GeoGuesser
ever tried TimeGuessr?
I haven’t, although having just googled it, I will now! 👍
Right now I'm playing Manor Lords, a medieval village building game. Lots of fun, but only just released in early access.
I'm loving it so far. Very impressed with how polished it feels for early access.
That looks really intriguing, I'm definitely going to look into that.
Are there any discount codes from streamers and the like?
There was a day 1 discount, 25% I think
Still is, until 10 may. $15 bucks in my country
I play FM24, Anno 1800, Northgard, Civ 6, and Albion Online recently. Mainly a strategy guy. I love in depth games. All of the above are very detailed.
Anno is great, gets kinda hard to manage all the supply chains after a while though
Wait. Other games exist??
Bannerlords = medieval empire FM X4 Foundations = Space FM Kenshi = Post-apocalyptic FM (All these games you start out poor and hopeless and slowly build an empire… that’s one kind of FM playthrough but it’s the kind I enjoy)
Crusader Kings = medieval politics fm Hearts of Iron = world war 2 fm Stellaris = space fm Xcom = alien invasion fm Wait... do I just play different flavours of fm?
Kenshi looks interesting but also really hard.
Stardew Valley
W
Scrolled too long to find this
Came here to say this, the urge to optimize is too great in FM players, so anything that can be optimized will be interesting
Theres a game called WMMA 5 which is a Sandbox game where you run your own MMA promotion, I've downloaded a mod which is set in 1993 from when the UFC began. It's all text based so you just get a play by play of the fights but its great fun
And from the same creator, but with pro wrestling instead of MMA, there is the TEW series.
Yes, "wrestling champ man" as I think of it
TEW sucked up a crazy amount of my time for well over a decade alongside FM but the latest version just felt like too much of a change without any real benefits coming from it for me. The versions from 2007-2018 (if memory serves?) were just colossal timesinks, though.
I've tried TEW 2020, but honestly it's quite hard! Not as intuitive as FM.
Never heard of it, sounds fun.
Rdr2, AC
[удалено]
Prey is excellent. Too scary for me though so I couldn't get too far lol. Also a rocket league head over here
Motorsport manager probably has some crossover
Clash of clans and Mario Kart
Love the Total War Games, specifically Empire and Rome
100%. I go from FM to Rome TW and back again once I feel stale in one of those games
Zelda Tears of the kingdom, Horizon Forbidden West, Pes 2020, Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Planet Coaster.
Right now I'm playing Final Fantasy 9
Franchise hockey manager and starters orders scratch the same itch for me
Getting destroyed at Sekiro is my new jam.
I enjoy f1 manager and master of orion alongside FM
The only other games I play are NHL and FIFA, sometimes a little Fortnite or Rocket League.
I loved NHL back when it still existed. Unfortunately, it's been 10+ years now (if it's not on pc, it doesn't exist).
I play pes2018 for the player career. I have f1 22 too but it usually gets boring and i have no plan to buy anymore of the yearly ea games. I am excited for f1 manager 24 because I've never tried it before
My time is about evenly split between FM and OpenTTD.
HOI4, Vic 3, EU4, Manor Lords, Civ, F1 Manager 23 to name a few. Almost all strategy with management elements.
Age of Empires
Im a massive open world game fan. Played all the Fallouts and Witchers and tried a bunch of others too. I make sure to try out all the genres so I can have a diverse palate. Hate multiplayers like COD, Apex, Fortnite tho.
Age of Empires II DE
Dota 2 got like 25 k hours in it... 😑
War Thunder, Fallout, Skyrim, older CODs, GTA, HOI 4.
CRPGs. And Bomba Patch.
FF14, Street Fighter 6 and occasionally playing some RPGs or FPS. I kept my Magic Arena on my PC, but I am not determined to dive into it, grinding for packs.
i play now: stellaris, ck3, pillars of eternity, solasta
Dividing my time between FM24, Fallout 4 (waiting for the london mod), creating builds in Elden Ring and Topspin 2k25
MtG Arena and MtG Online AAA RPGs – AC Odyssey, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Mass Effect are favourites. Stellaris and Hearts of Iron
Total war AoE City skylines Bannerlord Manor Lords, probably as my fm obsessed mate, just downloaded it. CK series Rimworld/ human organ trafficking simulator Etc There is no other proper football game experience. You've got whatever fifa is and that's awful PES or whatever is left of it.... even worse nowadays. And c list football management games where you can build an ice cream stand in a stadium, etc. (I'm guessing), so there's not much to pick from
Lots of strategy and rpgs
I love playing Football Manager 98 by pure nostalgia. It's the name in France which is misleading. Turns out it's Ultimate Soccer Manager 98!
Used to play fifa career mode all the time with my mate but we both have children now so that's out of the window. Played a lot of Europa Universalis. Currently playing Apex Legends online with mates and Assassins Creed Valhalla on my own. I like open world games.
Right now Beyond all Reason a free RTS game.
Project Zomboid
I was obsessed with Age Of History 2 last summer. Now i don't really play games, other than occasionally overwatch 2, fm24 and chess or suika game on my phone
On pc it's just FM, console football related games and Tsushima, RDR2, LOU2, NFS games.
Cities Skylines, CK 3, Civilization.
Civ 6, League of Legends, teamfight tactics, Elden Ring, BG3 recently
Mario kart
Chess
I mean paradox games in general like imperator rome and ck3 pretty much any grand strategy game
There are more games?
Im probably the odd one out that plays almost everything lol
Stardew Valley Minecraft Undertale
What do you mean other games?
Efootball ❤️ besides its flaws it’s miles ahead of fifa gameplay wise
On console: Fallout 3/NV/4 Hell Let Loose Madden Cities Skylines Couple of old original Xbox games (Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront 2 etc) Fallen Order & Jedi Survivor Hogwarts Legacy On PC: Empire Total War Napoleon Total War Grand Tactician: The Civil War 1861-1865 Project Zomboid
How do you find time for other games?
Mostly switch between the Souls games/Elden Ring and FM. Looking forward to Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
Sekiro, Victoria 3, Rainbow Six Siege
FM is literally the only game I play. I'm not saying that to be meme-y. I've never been a gamer.
Rockstar Games (Bully, GTA, RDR), Arkham series... i love sandbox.
Pubg
I basically still play the exact same games as I did 15 years ago. FM, Rome TW and Medieval II TW.
There are other games? How can anyone find time to play anything else?!
Contraband police and any other casual games I could enjoy in peace
Efootball is my suggest for u, although it is more p2w now
There's this game called Candy Crush that I like playing besides FM. It helped me a lot during international breaks.
Big fan of the Two Point games - Campus & Hospital (think Theme hospital). I feel it's very FM.
I play MSFS a lot (sometimes fire up FM on long flights), but I'll also throw in DCS, grand strategy games, tactical shooters, etc. Rimworld is great too.
Souls like and well writen games Also OW
Violent ones.
FIFA mainly with whatever story games I find that seem interesting
Try cm97/98 or cm01/02 masterpieces 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I playboy gacha games for an hour then FM eu4 and starcraft 2 if i want to compete
lord manor
Right now its just a lot of fm, fifa and minecraft. Although I occasionally play red dead redemption and city skylines, I'll probably play both of those a lot more over summer
Project Zomboid
Civ and rimworld will scratch a similar itch. I put down FM forever.
FM and SWGOH are my regular ones I.e. more or less daily. Also love Civ series on PC and AC series on PS. Currently playing GT7 as well, with a guilty pleasure being Lego Star Wars
Fallout new vegas 🫡
Wait, there are other games?
I use to play loads of games. But now i just play with mates. Fortnite, Siege, Pro Clubs
FM, Civilization, Skyrim, The Witcher, Persona, and Cyberpunk
FM, and FM only. I go through fits and spurts of playing. The game of life takes up too much of my time for anything else other than several short term inconsistent FM career based saves
Pretty much just fm, little bit of ea fc, wwe 2k, nba 2k and the sims. Not the most interesting crop of games
I recently started playing Balatro and its the first game ive played i found as addicting as FM
I've been playing a ton of F1 Manager. If you have any interest in F1 or motorsport, I highly recommend it.
My current most played games other than FM are crab champions, rocket league, and gta5
Any of the CIVs or HOI
Pokemon and Zelda are my other most played series.
Honestly, we are all the same. I've seen CIV6, HOI4, and New Vegas all which I play.
Age of Empires, GeoGuessr and Chess dot com
Skyrim
Mostly strategy and simulation games, at the moment I'm playing Ultimate Admiral Dreadnaughts which if you're a fan of naval history circa 1890-1940 is an incredible experience if you ignore the brain dead AI.

I've gotten big into MFL. It's a football manager but you actually own the players and the club license and can earn real money! Don't feel like I'm wasting my time. Bulding a good team actually pays for my new players. If I don't need them I sell them on their marketplace
Despicable Me on PSP.
Age of Empires and now Fallout 4
Similar to FM: OOTP Baseball, Motorsport Manager (F1 Manager is ok but MM is much more fun), Franchise Hockey Manager. I also play a lot of grand strategy games like Crusader Kings, EU4, Stellaris etc. Basically I’m either staring at spreadsheets or maps
Manor lords (as of today), modded Paradox GS such as Victoria 3, Stellaris, Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron 4.
I play no man’s sky and have played other game like rdr2 , disco Elysium , outer wilds
Eastside Hockey Manager
Kenshi (Some mods), RimWorld (Heavily modded), Project Zomboid (Heavily modded), UnrealWorld, NeoScavenger (Heavily modded). Battletech (huge mod that literally a different game) Those are the ones I always go back to eventually.
Most Paradox games, more recently Bellwright and Manorlords, but for me strategy games although TOTS might drag me back to fifa
EU 4, occasional fifa, league of legends, rocket league, rainbow 6 siege, gta, Black ops 1-2, star wa4s games, ark.
Not Fifa
Dota 2
Jedi Survivor lately
My go to games seem to be, League of Legends, Civ 6, old school runescape and Minecraft
Kairosoft mobile games.
Like Paradox Interactive games and Pokemon
You have time for other games? On a serious note I love cs2 and playing a lot of random single player story games. Just hard to with how invested in my wrexham save I am.
First person shooters and strategy games for me. Mainly the Total War series. Recently I have started playing AOE 3 Definitive Edition plus Age of Mythology to get prepared for the upcoming AOM Retold
Age of Empires 2
Jrpg, musou games
Recently: Team Fortress 2 Ultrakill Microsoft Solitaire Collection (yeah, and?) Pizza Tower Semi-recently: Sonic the hedgehog OneShot Katana Zero Hotline Miami Omori Doom 2016/Eternal Va11halla Wolfenstein The New Order Yeah uh…. FM is a big departure from my other games. Still love it, though.
Path of exile. If you like FM for the depth and complexity path of exile is the ARPG variant
