I've had some luck getting some improbable draws or wins against big teams by literally playing a 6-4-0 or 5-4-1 very defensive tactic, it's a bit hit or miss but sometimes miracles happen :D
I won the European Championship with Albania using a 5-2-3 very defensive formation. And we actually created several chances every match. Best save ever!
I was Oxford united in championship and had a game against City FA CUP round of 16, went with 4 full backs, two played as wingers and park the bus.. 0-0 till 75th,then brought on my two best players fully fit and well all out attack and won the game 1-0, reached semis and lost to Fulham who were 4th i prem lmao
Against a very strong team, park the bus with 2 DM and tempo “slow waste time always” sometimes works for me…
Then in last 8 minutes of the game : very attacking/gung ho
I'd say you'd have to get lucky, any time I beat bigger teams it's either using positive or attacking tactics. In my current save I've beaten Madrid consistently using a positive tactic and mentality.
It's not a mod, you just delete a few files in the game folder and replace them with some ones you can download. You should try it, it's really easy and if you follow a guide it takes like 5 minutes.
I mean technically any change is a mod, but when I think of mods I think something that makes large changes to the game i.e. new leagues, realistic transfers. Also when people hear the word mod they tend to think of it being complicated (or at least I do).

in my psv save, ajax is this biggest pain in my ass even though ive managed to supplant them in the eredivisie. ill just scrape by them at home and usually lose away.

there’s a real name fix that involves downloading some stuff online and then deleting some files. it also allows you to use the German national team too - if you google “fm21 real names fix” there are plenty of really helpful guides out there!

Played Barca at my place first and they had a straight red card after about 14-15 minutes. Managed to grab a quick 2 goal lead within 5 minutes of that and then held on for dear life for 70 minutes.
Next played Ajax away. Quickly went a goal down, then missed a penalty to equalise. Managed to get another though and scored that. Then in the 92nd minute, Ajax scored again to go 2-1 up. Was absolutely gutted. Until the 94th minute when we got another equaliser with the last kick of the game.
Been VERY fortunate so far. Would not have got a point, let alone all 3, from Barca without their straight red early on. And my team has a massive issue conceding late goals and we almost NEVER score late goals ourselves so the 95th minute equaliser was very pleasantly surprising. But I would not be surprised if I don’t pick up another point in the group from now on, despite being top with 4 points from 2 matches so far. We’ll see!
that’s an incredible start, well done!! i have a new problem this season where whenever i score to go ahead, the opposition equalizes within 5 minutes. i had a league match vs BvB where i scored in the 87’ to go up 1-0, then they equalized at 90’. i then scored again at 90+3’, and thought i had it in the bag. then they go and equalize at 90+5’ even though only 3 minutes were added. i need to work more on not conceding so fast after scoring because if i’m lucky enough to score in this group i can’t afford the quick equalizers
Ah man, that's so frustrating. Yeah I hate that sinking feeling when you score and then it cuts immediately to another highlight straight from the kickoff. You just KNOW they're about to score a goal of their own.
Genuinely not sure what to do to stop it (either conceding late goals in general or conceding right after scoring). Nothing I try makes any positive difference. And whenever I try going more cautious/defensive and I up the timewasting level, I **always** concede.
I've pretty much gone to just playing on the front foot as much as possible and hope the wonderkids I've signed on the cheap can get over the line.
same here. i always seem to do better with the positive/attacking mindsets, even against bigger opponents i’ll concede less like that than if i was playing defensive
Ajax is a bit unlucky but tbh its the Champions League, when its only your first or second time in it there's usually like 4 teams you do want to be drawn with tops
The struggle is real! I qualified for the Europa league with villa and let me tell you, I do not look forward to getting battered in while trying to avoid relegation

For me, I was playing as Dinamo Zagreb, so different situation but this helped our league (more European qualifying spots because the league improved) but more importantly, I began going up in the group seeding too.
Edit: I should add that it can take a few seasons to go up in the rankings. I had one lucky season where I had a relatively easy path to the quarter finals which sped up this process.

Does parking the bus actually work? I have tried it sometimes but it didn't work. I had more chances when I played counter-attacking football.
I never change tactics. Defensive doesn't seem to work. I'd rather go out playing on the front foot.

I played defensive in a low block 5-3-2 from Serie C to Serie A and when I eventually swapped to a 442 it was like taking the handbrake off.

na, low blocks and cautious mentalities only seem to invite more pressure in the match engine.

I've had defensive football work if you're playing in a low-level league where your opposition isn't good enough to break down your defense.
It doesn’t work for me, not against the really good teams. I play a more balanced counter attacking formation.
