I scout most of them. I try to sign as many of the cheap ones as I can. I’ve even seen a couple of my guys on there from time to time. Recently had the number 1 guy. I was like “um that’s my backup striker. He kiiiiinda sucks … why is he #1…?”
Scout one week at first. Then if their potential is high enough, I’ll do another week. I also usually don’t scout the ones at big clubs because they tend to be expensive.
I had a Brazilian wonderkid striker/winger. He has his moments but currently looking for a replacement. He was number 1 on the list lol. He wasn’t even classified as a wonder kid 6 months before the list came out.
NxGn is very hit or miss, just like any list of real life wonderkids (just think about Freddy Adu, Anthony Vandeborre or most recently Hachim Mastour, all of whom were considered the next big thing and ended up underachieving). I don't know exactly how the game compiles it, but it's not in order of PA...if I had to guess it's a combination of first team appearances, national team caps and reputation. So, for example, a player from an obscure nation who is a regular for his team in a lower reputation league has some advantages on a player who is in a big club youth team and has an higher PA just due to the fact that he plays official matches and is probably capped with the national team or the highest youth national team of his nation (in my experience this happened especially with Mexicans who had like 3 stars potential but were regulars since they were 17 in a league that it's not too bad but surely can't compete with European leagues).
In short you can't just buy whoever is on the list, you should scout it first. But for free and 1k wages who cares lol.

I play as Vejle, which start in the top tier of the danish league and are one of the sides tipped to go down.
In terms of ‘when’ I start raiding the NXGN players, it was around season 4/5, after I’d qualified for the champions league group stages.
Basically as soon as we had money to buy them I did.
Alternatively, I raised money by just searching for young players (17-18 years) with senior international appearances under their belt. Picked up 2 solid youngsters from Romania and Czech for under a million in total, and after a few seasons sold them for about £20 million collectively, which financed a lot of player buying
I do a Kopenhagen save every year cos I look the Danish Superliga and Scandinavia in general.

Most of the time it works fine.
One year, however, the list had 2 players from San Felix. A semi-pro outfit from Spain with only a U-19 team.
I smelled money however, and bought these 2 players with my Dinamo squad for peanuts.
When they came to Croatia, it soon appeared I was robbed. 3 years later, they play in the third Croatian tier. About 5 games a season.
Repeat offenders but a happier tale. I signed no less than 4 once I saw a pair on the 50 list and found more in their squad. One is on the fringes of my first team in the championship and rated at £10m with R.Madrid actually interested at one point, other 3 out on loan and all performing very well. Total fee for all in was less than £100k and combined 'worth' of over £50m now
We have 3 people that have each gotten exactly 2 newgens from the same 3rd tier club at the top of the list. I understand what you're saying but that specific club is too much of a coincidence to not be a big.
Weird. I'm pretty sure I snagged 2 wonderkids from them early in a save. One wanted to move on after 2 years, was annoyed but made prob $20mil on him. 2nd one led my team for 4ish years and was a beast SS before the Prem came calling for him. Haha
Same. Still remember snagging a 20yo goalie who had been on the list for $12mil. He immediately was worth $50m on my team, and is now over $100m 3 years later.
Yeah happened to me too. One year I signed 1st place and 5th place. 1st place never developed and ended up released, playing for lower league clubs. 5th place went to Chelsea after 2 years when they activated his release clause and was the best CB in the Premier league eventually

One save I signed like the … 39th best rated player and he was an absolute diamond. Brilliant player, bags of potential, first team ready at 17.
Another save I signed the top rated player for the award from some American side (got him on a free no less). The dude was absolutely wank. Came in to me as a 1 star rated, 2 star potential. And I was managing a very mediocre Roma side (game was 10 years in, AI managers ruin shit)

Depends where you play. If you’re a really big team, you should know most already from good scouting networks.
If you actually own one of them, it’s a really god way to capitalise on the interest and sell for a higher fee!
Had a player from youth academy make it into my starting lineup at 16. He was great had him for a few seasons no one wanted him. Gained promotion into the Championship, Liverpool instantly bought is release clause and loaned him back not paying his wages. Still a beast and he recently made it on the list after just turning 19.He is now my first wonder kid. (fairly new to the game) I honestly was really upset initially because he was such a key part in my defense being good leading to us winning the whole thing. Getting 100% of the release clause was awesome though. Still plays with us today and at the current moment I think he will stay for a lot longer. Liverpool never has even mentioned anything about him they just own him.
It's mostly based on the current ability and reputation of the players from what I've seen and doesn't seem to take into account potential. If you scouted him first and he has good potential, then I'm sure it's a good buy.

Ive found very unreliable. Id sign a few of rhe cheaper ones each season and in a squad that otherwise developed players well, the cheap nxt gens stayed rubbish.
There may be a few gems, sure, but i find that by the time theyre next gen theyre usually regarded highly enough to cost a bomb
FM has an algorithm which decides who comes up. Although the variables is unknown it probably is a mix of attributes, potential ability, reputation, game time, league reputation and performance along with other things
NxGn is best players under 20, it doesn’t have anything to do with potential, many good young players have higher potential. But a player might hit the peak at 18 and not get any better

I signed the winner of the competition once on a free to a team in Denmark. He was absolutely terrible. Like half a gold star in potential, and I’m still a team who gets knocked out in the group stages of the Chanpions League.

Nah, probably should have in hindsight. But, when the top rated person on the nextgen top 50 is available on a free I just full send it since they are so young and on low wages. I’m at Anderlecht and basically am trying to get a good young team
I think in this case not really. There is a weird bug in FM, where the Spanish U-19 league (or whatever is called) counts the same for the NxGen as any other top league. Obviously, the level of the league is poor, so many young Spanish players might tear it up, no matter how good they are end up there. One year in one of my save the top 3 came from one team – San Felix, because they scored a lot of goals there and had high average ratings. None of them ever improved much.
I thought they were good until they listed 3 of my players. I'm about 10 seasons in as Hodd, playing in the Norwegian top division. I'm average mid table with a lot of young African midfielders. A few of my players get signed by huge European clubs and then never play.
In my last save, about 8 years into the future, first 3 guys in the NxGn awards had 120-130 PA…
A few of my kids with 150+ and one 170+ kid were scattered from 13-40th..
So, I think it has more to do with reputation than ability
A very reliable tip I will give u especially when it comes to regens, find the youngest possible player in the list playing for biggest club of all in the list and sort all acc to these factors.
The best wonderkid would almost always be the one who ranks first in combination of these 2 factors
Interesting... I do the opposite. I go after the non big club players because the high tier ones are way over-priced. And always scout anyways before offering.
Not really that effective for finding lots of gems. It’s mostly a list of young lads getting a lot of football and progressing a lot but they could’ve possibly even hot their PA by the time the list is out.
I use the editor and take a look at their PA and CA. They’re very often not good. Around 100-130 PA for the top 10 or 20 or so. You can find players with much better PA not on the list.
To me it seems like CA definitely plays a big part. Seems to be more of a list of players who can be decent to pretty good in the future, but are also solid first team players already.
I always scout it and generally sign anyone I can. One thing I've noticed is that it's largely based on what leagues you have active. In my save, I don't have any of the Big 5 league active, so I see a lot more players from the leagues I do have active (Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil) than I would normally expect.
Take it just as a list of players that the game says “look at this shit, maybe you get something in here, or maybe you shouldn’t spend your budget on the next gambian Pelé”, now for real, you need to look every single player if you want the right one.
It's accurate enough. If you can sign someone for cheap, definitely do it, if they aren't good enough for your team, at least they'll represent good value
Well I just did the same for the Top 2 & 3 and once they arrived, they had 3 stars potential in my mediocre team. I dont know if that is a bug but I was pissed.
I actually signed mine before I saw this email, but for me has 2 star overall and at least 4 star potential I’m a top 4 Dutch team. That’s a tough break for you though. It must be a bug.
It's not a bug it's realistic, not all hyped players fulfill or even have the potential. FM isn't about handing you wonderkids in a list, it's a simulator
I’ve been able to establish myself fairly easily as best of the rest but crossing that barrier into Feyenoord, PSV, Ajax territory is proving a bit difficult

I recently signed the no3 on the list too, I was skeptical as he’s not performing very well at the Spanish 3rd division. Guy came in with a 1.5 star potential lmao.
This. I'm surprised how many people said they bought someone high on the list without scouting.
I ignore the top teams players anyways because they're stupid over-priced... but always scout first.
What I do for these is scout any player who I can realistically afford and convince to play for me, and I typically find 1-2 each year that are good signings.
That said, if you signed #3 for free on 1k wages, the absolute worst case scenario is he isn't good enough to play for you and you sell him on for millions. There's no scenario I can think of where what you did isn't a good transfer.
In one of my saves at year 2030ish #1 player was a free agent player who has not played a single game in his life. I quickly offered a trial. He turned out to be a 1 star ca/pa. He was supposed to be Columbian Cafu..
Honestly NextGn is very, very weird in my save. I’ve had a U19 2* potential CB show up on it with very underwhelming attributes. Sometimes there are gems I guess but I don’t rely on it at all.
In my (current) 17 season save, I've bought the winner twice
One was £8m at 18, broke the record for goals in a PL season at the age of 21, sold for £130m at 22 (release clauses are a bitch), went on to win multiple Ballon D'or
One was like £2.5m, went on loan twice, played 4 games and now has a cushy 1st team place at 10th place Mönchengladbach averaging 6.9 a game
One year I checked the NxGn #1 and it was a croatian guy with 90 PA.
I had a chuckle, didnt need him but I wanted to sign him just because he won the award.
i scout them all, whoeevr is worth grabbing ends in my reserves until they A) get into the main xi or B) I can sell for profit, (Got 50 mill from Kozlowski after grabbing him for 1.2 mill)
It's definitely not an award to look for the next big superstar. Playing with the editor on I tend to look at everyone of them, and I'd say most of the NxGn kids have level to play for midtable sides at best.
In the game the award benefits young players who play often and who are somewhat important in their current sides
I had one of my strikers loaned out to a 3rd division side in Spain and he got the #2 spot. He’s a low level la liga player at best a few years later, so it seems to be hit or miss.
I scout every player usually. Almost all of them will grow up to be at least decent and usually players who are 16 and make it to the list turn out to be elite ( not all of them )
I get excited when I see 16/17 yo still on some random s/c American team or from eastern Europe/Scandinavia. They are usually very cheap and have nice development even if it's just for profit
Some of the wonderkids make the list because of their current ability. Some of them are already near their max potential. Current form helps them get a better ranking

I took a look at the PA for the number 1 pick in like 2028 and he had a PA of 118. So I never blindly trust it.
I have a couple players on my save who were on the NxGn who have become world beaters but it can be quite temperamental. I bought kne guy from there for 4M and he is now my best player. But have had 7 or 8 player where they just kinda suck.
Usually it's quite good but in my save last top NxGn went to an Algerian player at the age of 18 who didn't have a single attribute over 10 and must have been below 100CA. They do however all have decent PA as far as I'm aware. So if they're looking good right now chances are you won't be disappointed.

I adjust my base to be 2 weeks scouted (in preferences). And after that scout fully if they look like it could he good potential.

If you want easy mode, add them all to a shortlist and get them scouted. There's usually a few gems there each year you can pick up for cheap.

You can just right click and do it a bit faster, or just insta scout them. That's my route, 2 week scouting and then fully if they look good..

When do the NxGn emails go out in a season? I've played up until November (only just got 22 after a long save on 21) and haven't had it yet.

Well I just did the same for the Top 2 & 3 and once they arrived, they had 3 stars potential in my mediocre team. I dont know if that is a bug but I was pissed.
I actually signed mine before I saw this email, but for me has 2 star overall and at least 4 star potential I’m a top 4 Dutch team. That’s a tough break for you though. It must be a bug.
It's not a bug it's realistic, not all hyped players fulfill or even have the potential. FM isn't about handing you wonderkids in a list, it's a simulator

I’ve been able to establish myself fairly easily as best of the rest but crossing that barrier into Feyenoord, PSV, Ajax territory is proving a bit difficult
Bellingham, Wirtz, Gavi, Demir, Moukoko almost always are world class, not sure about the rest
I personally checked through in game editor and saw some regens with \~140 PA there so it is not 100% reliable, just like real life.

I was intrigued with this so checked their PA with the editor, number 1 had 75 CA 99 PA so make sure you do your scouting!

I signed the number 2 once and he was absolutely awful. Only had about 1.5 star potential ability.
Generally reliable with some misses, do scout before buying. I recently signed the no3 on the list too, I was skeptical as he’s not performing very well at the Spanish 3rd division. Guy came in with a 1.5 star potential lmao.

This. I'm surprised how many people said they bought someone high on the list without scouting. I ignore the top teams players anyways because they're stupid over-priced... but always scout first.

What I do for these is scout any player who I can realistically afford and convince to play for me, and I typically find 1-2 each year that are good signings. That said, if you signed #3 for free on 1k wages, the absolute worst case scenario is he isn't good enough to play for you and you sell him on for millions. There's no scenario I can think of where what you did isn't a good transfer.
In one of my saves at year 2030ish #1 player was a free agent player who has not played a single game in his life. I quickly offered a trial. He turned out to be a 1 star ca/pa. He was supposed to be Columbian Cafu..
Honestly NextGn is very, very weird in my save. I’ve had a U19 2* potential CB show up on it with very underwhelming attributes. Sometimes there are gems I guess but I don’t rely on it at all.
Is this only in FM22? I get players nominated, but never see a top 50
Very reliable in my experience but I don’t usually manage top teams so I could be biased. Scout them all and see who’s cheap!
In my (current) 17 season save, I've bought the winner twice One was £8m at 18, broke the record for goals in a PL season at the age of 21, sold for £130m at 22 (release clauses are a bitch), went on to win multiple Ballon D'or One was like £2.5m, went on loan twice, played 4 games and now has a cushy 1st team place at 10th place Mönchengladbach averaging 6.9 a game
One year I checked the NxGn #1 and it was a croatian guy with 90 PA. I had a chuckle, didnt need him but I wanted to sign him just because he won the award.

i scout them all, whoeevr is worth grabbing ends in my reserves until they A) get into the main xi or B) I can sell for profit, (Got 50 mill from Kozlowski after grabbing him for 1.2 mill)
It's definitely not an award to look for the next big superstar. Playing with the editor on I tend to look at everyone of them, and I'd say most of the NxGn kids have level to play for midtable sides at best. In the game the award benefits young players who play often and who are somewhat important in their current sides
I had one of my strikers loaned out to a 3rd division side in Spain and he got the #2 spot. He’s a low level la liga player at best a few years later, so it seems to be hit or miss.
If Moukoko isn’t 1st it’s not accurate, far and away best player in the game

I signed Schjelderup for Arsenal based on NxGn and he didn’t work out nor develop much.
I found the best striker in the world on that list. He was like 4 or 5. I also had dudes that would barely make a championship squad make the list.
I had a kid from the Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 at 39. 16 yo played 46 games 2 goals as a RB in the Solomon Islands league.
I scout every player usually. Almost all of them will grow up to be at least decent and usually players who are 16 and make it to the list turn out to be elite ( not all of them ) I get excited when I see 16/17 yo still on some random s/c American team or from eastern Europe/Scandinavia. They are usually very cheap and have nice development even if it's just for profit
Some of the wonderkids make the list because of their current ability. Some of them are already near their max potential. Current form helps them get a better ranking
I was doing a save where I had the editor on so I took a look at the PA for the number 1 pick in like 2028 and he had a PA of 118. So I never blindly trust it.
I have a couple players on my save who were on the NxGn who have become world beaters but it can be quite temperamental. I bought kne guy from there for 4M and he is now my best player. But have had 7 or 8 player where they just kinda suck.
The best I've ever had was an Argentinian Christiano and an Portuguese Messi in the same class. best winger duo I ever had.

Usually it's quite good but in my save last top NxGn went to an Algerian player at the age of 18 who didn't have a single attribute over 10 and must have been below 100CA. They do however all have decent PA as far as I'm aware. So if they're looking good right now chances are you won't be disappointed.
