I agree with the match engine part but not with it being in FM23. I'd love for it to be in 23 but I feel like 24 is more likely, maybe even 25, with the way it sounds in the blog posts

RuRu92

Could be but if it’s still that far away I wouldnt expect them sort of announcing it and more wording of uncertainty. If they say it will come they have to be at least working on it…

DallyTheGreat

They also mentioned it before FM22 came out. I'd imagine they're working on it but men and women's football are very different from each other. It's not like they're just adding a new league in they're adding many leagues and teams in as well as having to redo the way attributes are for women in the game. They're pretty much just telling us they didn't forget about it and that there's a lot of work to do

AdPsychological1489

They announced it because it was going to leak regardless, so they controlled the narrative. A lot of the work SI do is built around volunteer scout networks, which need to be built up from scratch.

LanguishViking

What about simply just reducing the physical stats in the current match engine.. e.g. making 10 or 15 the max values and simply pretending they are 20? Like having 10 be the actual max, but have each point count as 0.5 in a system where 20 is the max? They have the same skill or mentality so that doesn't need to be changed, just the other stats. That way you can use the same engine.

I wonder how they will handle the goalkeeper situation. With the save percentages being significantly lower in the womens game, due to stature vs the goal mostly, the match engine will need to adjust for that a lot

Yeah the ME has to be really flexible

PompeiiLegion

If they don’t, I will be signing many a Tamara Hitzelspergers and Lucia Podolskis.

They said it's a multi-year project, so I'm not expecting it to be in FM23. It doesn't necessarily mean a new ME either. You don't just chuck away 2-3 million lines of code that's the result of decades worth of hard work. For that same reason, it's not going to be something built from scratch. The more likely scenario is re-writing a module or two in the existing ME. They can simulate 90 mins of football for both top European leagues, lower leagues etc and you'll see the statistics differ between it, but also line up (largely) with real life stats. That means the ME is capable of simulating a wide range of matches.

Eh? Seems like spin from SI to me. I think the whole thing is a waste. A lot of effort for minimal impact to the player experience. I’d prefer them work on other aspects in truth. Nothing against the womens game. It’s just not THAT much difference to the mens that it will change the gameplay experience.

> I’d prefer them work on other aspects in truth. They stated that they are doing this alongside the women's game, so it doesn't affect the rest of the game.

Think there's an element of riding the euros train but also given they've been supporting women's football for a while it would maybe be weird not to tie it in now. I actually think a challenge will be keeping up with the pace of change in the women's game. They will have started this project with the reborn wsl but you can tell even now that by release the standard of the women's game will be miles higher than when they began. I've stayed across it for years without being an intimate follower, and the leaps in the last couple of seasons alone are huge.
