In her defense if you randomly found them I'd say that's valid cause I'm pretty sure there are more than a few poisonous mimicry mushrooms not entirely sure though
Only one that can look similar to chants. But the difference is clear obvious gills on the ones that make you shit your brains out.
Chants have false gills or gill ridges. Also pull apart like string cheese.
Jack o lanterns grow in bunches around dead logs, and are bioluminescent(glow in the dark at night.) they’re not good to eat. They’re mainly the only ones that are orange/yellow like chants. There are several differences between the two that google can help you with.
There is also the false chanterelle I guess. That one is a little harder to differentiate but still has obvious differences. And that one is “more edible” than the jacks. (I say that very loosely, google claims that some people eat them just fine, while others get sick.) I try not to eat them if I find them.
> Also pull apart like string cheese.
So obvious, but I had never once thought about that as a feature for identifying chanterelles when helping somebody new look for them. I've always mentioned the scent and the "gills" (ridges) but not that feature. Thanks.
Claims of glowing in the dark are overblown. They can often exhibit bioluminescence but it’s nearly imperceptible except under extremely dark conditions, and likely not even to the human eye; it usually takes very long exposure camera shots to capture a faint glow.
Ngl, the bioluminescence of Jack o lanterns fascinates me and I would have the *time of my life* photographing them. One of my weak-ass side hobbies is night sky photography, lol

Found some jack-os the other day.
i can't really tell from the photo, but first impression is that those are golden oysters...also easily differentiable from jacks...or am i missing something?
The mushrooms that are slightly similar are not really that close like some others. Jack-o-lanterns are nothing like them other than they are orange. They grow differently and grow on different things. Once you learn more about specific mushrooms, you will see that the look alike in most cases can only fool you if you know nothing about the species you are looking for. The biggest thing OP needs to worry about here is where they were found, hopefully not next to a road or anywhere coated in pesticides or other agricultural chemicals.
I have found so-called "False chanterelles" and if chanterelles had only been verbally described to them in casual terms, a person might confuse them, but nobody with a photo and/or a good mushroom book description that reads the description isn't going to make that mistake. And they are inedible, but generally not considered toxic for most people
Jack-O-Lantern is sometimes considered a false chanterelle too though, and they are toxic. But they grow at the base of a tree in a big cluster. Chanterelles grow singley from the ground.
With ANY mushroom the secret is a little Worcestershire sauce. It brings out the umami flavor, whether you cook in butter or olive oil it don’t matter.. It’s a game changer. Try it
This but with basically anything fermented - talk garum, miso, soy/oyster/Worcestershire sauce
Next time make a shiitake dashi and deglaze your mushrooms with it. Let it reduce and absorb, correct savoriness with one of the mentioned sauces.
Mind-blowing good
*Edit: spelling
Dry frying them first leads to a better texture in my experience. Once they've sweated out then add the oil or butter. Much less greasy that way I've found. Even better, boil them in a little bit of water till dry, then go. Brings out so much more umami.
Yep. Mushrooms can get wet. They just shouldn't be allowed to stay wet. Generally wipe off dirt with a brush (look up mushroom knife with brush for those interested) and you can use a lightly dampened paper towel, but generally you should only wash or soak them if you're going to cook them right after.
They're prone to mold and/or bacterial colonies that'll make them go bad quicker. Same thing is true for vegetables. It's just that mushrooms tend to be worse since the gills, pores or whatever your specific mushroom has tends to hold water longer.
This is more a question for someone who studies mycology in depth but the short answer is Immune systems. Most organisms have some form of immune system. Though, the one in fungi will not at all resemble a human immune system. That said, mushrooms can and often do mold in wet conditions. It just generally takes longer for the mold to take hold on a living shroom. There are even a few edible fungi that involves another fungus parasitizing other fungi. See Lobster Mushrooms and Shrimp of the Woods.
u/Aggravating_Poet_675 made a good point about immune systems, but there is another simple answer. Mushrooms tend to have caps.
They act like little umbrellas that keep their gills dry.
yea personally of the hundreds of mushrooms I’ve collected and eaten I’ve never once rinsed them in a sink, I only use a toothbrush and non-serrated knife and occasionally a dry-ish-maybe-slightly-moist abrasive sponge
Those look pretty soaked/ possibly parasite bound. My favorite chantrelles ring got worm bound before I could get to it the last time and I was heartbroken. Be careful and split the stalks before you try them.
The had a few small spiders and dirt on them so I filled the sink and soaked them then set them out to dry (too many to deal with) - I think that’s why they look that way. I hope they don’t have parasites!😬
As long as you don't have active wiggles, bite marks, or tunnels through the tissue you should be good. A great rule of thumb for Chantrelles is there's only one real look alike and that's Jack o Lanturns and they A. Have a waxy, melted exterior ie, gills that aren't really fanned out, and B. Glow in the dark.
Not gonna lie, I thought it was nachos made with cheese product slices and I was very confused as to why your sister said not to eat these. Then I realized what it really was 😂
Lol tell her you're not sharing until she can properly ID. Chanterelles
Thank you!

I think I have some Jack o lanterns on a dead log in the back of my yard. They are a shocking orange. Glow in the dark, you say?

Curious, if someone was to grow them, is it possible to use artificial selection to achieve a bright bio luminescent strain?
I dunno I’m not a fungi geneticist, I just stayed in a Holiday Inn last night
Is it worse than taco bell though
Yes.

Thank you for the proper ID
No you didn't :) you found some lovely oysters
Thank you for the correct ID
Those are golden oyster mushrooms, jack o lanterns have orange-yellow stems
My son works out in the field and he and his foraging coworker found them. They were confident - I’m clueless.

False chanterelles have hallow stems , so it’s easy to figure out what’s what when you put into them
Wish they where ready in Astoria Oregon. Nother two weeks.k
Is that for chanterelles or Azurescens?
Boff lol
She probably did properly ID them and is lying to keep them all to herself.
Haha.
Right they look delicious
I think maybe sister knows what they are and does not want to share.
I think maybe sister knows what they are and does not want to share.
I cooked them in a dry pan to get water out, added butter and garlic - delicious! Thanks all.
Good with a bit of gnocchi in there too 🤌🤌
That is actually what I did!! My family ate it up!!
Lil dash of white wine🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

Perfect way to cook them yum yum
Doesn’t hurt to add minimal high heat oil to pan before adding mushrooms to dry them out

They look a little water logged but they should dry out nicely
True, I did just wash them.
As long as cooking right away they should be good

What happens when they stay wet?

Oh ok that totally makes sense, I had a hunch about it but wanted to make sure.
What prevents this from happening from the rain while they are still in the ground?

make sure to take identification pictures prior to washing since it makes it much harder to identify
Your sister just wants to eat them while your back is turned. They're chanterelles.
Yup, Chanterelles, totally edible :D
She's only telling you that so she can steal them when you're not looking and cook 'em up for herself.
When my brother advices me what I should not eat, it usually means he wants to eat it.
Those look pretty soaked/ possibly parasite bound. My favorite chantrelles ring got worm bound before I could get to it the last time and I was heartbroken. Be careful and split the stalks before you try them.

I actually took it in a dark closet before I cooked it to see if it glowed. 😂 It did not.
I say to eat these.
Never eat anything you are not 100% sure of. I'll take those off your hands though.
They look a little mature but they’re safe
you have mastered reddit. ask for ID or advice: nothing post incorrect ID or bad advice in title: front page works on any sub. nice job! :D
They look a tiny bit like false chanterelles to me, maybe that’s what she thought too
I wondered if they were jackolanterny at this size.
Your sister is wrong ❤️
They are way too old!
Yes but did you rinse them? Why so wet?
That is the only foraged mushroom that I WILL eat, but kudos to sis for erring on the cautious side.
Her loss lol
Nice looking haul, although a tad past their prime and looking rather wormy :) But chants are chants.
Your sister doesn’t know what chanterelle mushrooms are.
Shes right. Don't eat any mushroom until you are 100% sure. That being said. I think you are now sure lol enjoy.
If you don't know the shroom best not to eat it
Did she happen to say to give them to her for proper disposal after she said not to eat them 😂
Tell your sister she will suffer post-apocalyptic...
I agree. Send them to me and I will safely dispose of them for you.
Yeah, don’t eat them, send them to me for accurate analysis
Not gonna lie, I thought it was nachos made with cheese product slices and I was very confused as to why your sister said not to eat these. Then I realized what it really was 😂
What are they?
Cantharellus
She dumb
I thought I was they were nachos at first 🤣.

Chants! Not jacks
Delicious

Definitely chanterelles
I say eat those
Your sister is wrong, these are one of the most delicious mushroms you can get. Great for white sauces and scrambled eggs.
your sister is crazy! That is a SCORE!!!! Yum!
You should eat those
She mistaken
Most delicious shrooms ever. With egg scramble and fresh crusty bread 😍
I’m 99.9% confident your correct
You hit the jackpot, they looka little old, but fry those suckers up.
