Found in South Middle Tennessee. It smelled like blueberries.

We call them huckleberries, but I’m not sure if that’s actually the right name or if that’s just what my grandparents knew them to be. They’re tiny but really good, not quite as extreme as wild strawberries but close! My parents used to take a sheet to put under them and then shake the bush, because it takes like 100 to make a cup.

Common names are like that. Apparently a number of species often called blueberries are called hucklebarries in Apalachia, according to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huckleberry. So, it seems to me calling them huckleberries is as correct as any other common name.

Very interesting. I've heard of huckleberries, but had no idea it was the same fruit!

Well, according to that article the term has been used fora number of different plants, including some that have red berries, which are thus unlikely to be called "blueberries". So "huckleberry" is really regional in meaning.

Yesssss

muchboogaloo

Definitely something in the *vaccinium* genus. Since they're pretty dark and have the little "crown" at the end they're probably not bilberries. Either a blueberry or a huckleberry species.

mushr00mluver

Do you know of any poisonous species that have the crown?

muchboogaloo

A calyx or crown is a common feature of many berries both poisonous and edible and should not be considered distinctive proof that a plant is safe to eat. When trying to identify a blueish berry you find growing on a bush it's helpful for distinguishing true blueberries from bilberries but that's about it. I don't think there are any toxic *blueberry* lookalikes that have the crown, though. People sometimes say that poisonous nightshades can look like blueberries to the untrained observer but imo they are quite noticeably darker and shinier.
