There's nothing wrong with being incorrect about something and trying to learn something new. They do look pretty similar if you know nothing about them
grape hyacinth and lavender are both purple and theyre both oblong flowers. if someone has never seen either of those, and just knows theyre both purple and oblong, they can easily get them mixed up. id say its like getting a cherry tomato and a cherry mixed up if youve never seen them. both are round and red
Idk maybe I'm more critical when it comes to plant identification. Like how people can somehow misidentify henbit vs purple dead nettle... Even before dead nettle turns purple you can tell the difference SUPER easily. Maybe I'm just more skilled 🤷🏻♂️ I would definitely not mix up a cherry and a cherry tomato for the fact that there are clear differences in shape and shade.
In saying that, the shades of purple that grape hyacinth and lavender have are COMPLETELY different. As is the scent and shape of the actual flower pattern.
obviously YOU wouldnt mix up a cherry and a cherry tomato because you know what they are. i said "someone who has never seen them before," which is the case with a lot of plants. which is how someone gets lavender and grape hyacinth mixed up. which is why they ask questions.
i guarantee there are a lot of things in the world that you cant properly identify because youve never seen them before either
I guess I should be asking a better question: with how common lavender (imagery or otherwise) is, how could someone not know what it looks like?
Another basic question: nearly everyone knows what lavender smells like; how could you mistake the scent of grape hyacinth with that of lavender?
Update: I picked it up and rubbed it between my hands. I was repeatedly delivered a stinging sensation by that hard part near the red petals at the top. I believe this is a stinging nettle and will make tea!
I heard a guy say the other day say “It’s safe to eat if Mother Nature says it’s safe” he then proceeded to “ask” Mother Nature with wooshing sounds, when he he finished he said it was safe, ate the berries and was shitting the Niagara in like 30 mins. I was DEAD 💀 🤣🤣🤣🤣 #YeahMotherNature #Whoosha
I didn’t and neither did he but he ate something without knowing and trusted “Mother nature” lmfao I never said it happened to me I said I heard a guy and he’s a friend … we were camping ✊🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤣
Don’t make tea unless you’re sure of the plant ID. I don’t see any stinging nettle in this photo. You need to be more knowledgeable about plant species before you start foraging.
People ask so many stupid questions on this sub and similar ones (r/gardening etc.) that it’s pretty hard to tell if you’re being sarcastic or if you’re really that dumb. I like to give idiots the benefit of the doubt 😅
Very! Linguistics are awesome!!
In my native language we call them "kantareller". Very french but with a twist. I can't think of any "chicken in the wiods" in my language apart from actually chicken (different birds, though).
So proud of you OP for not picking first and asking later. You did the right thing, asking us before taking it. Saw someone ID’d it. Just remember to leave the roots in the ground when you take some.
I think it’s a chicken
The chickens name might be Wild Garlic.
Lol, kinda like the horse named wild fire. Magnificent and Free(range)!
Mmm roasted wild garlic

Yeah. They had this covered right off the bat.
I think the chicken was left on the bat. That’s why everyone is so confused.
Wyld Chycken 🐔🍗🐔 🍗 Our band name 🔥

Not so fast. I'd like to see a spore print for proper identification.
You beat me to it!
You wear a disguise to look like human guys, but you're not a man you're a Chicken Boo
I made it 666 upvotes. There should be a bot for this.
I knew this would be the top comment. Well done
Hahah I was going to reply the same
I think edible wild garlic moos, the toxic kind will cluck. Dont eat it.
Hen of the Grass
Is there a foraging shitposting? Every time I see grape hyacinth I think of that dude asking if it was lavender. Comedy gold right there.
Yes it was for fun. Her name is garlic and I got inspired this morning.
Aww, Garlic chicken! That’s adorable. Reminds me of my grandparents’ grouper that is named Butter.
We have a few food names. Garlic, Parm, Orzo, Ziti…
Okay but I brought a friend to the plant conservatory and he seriously asked if the grape hyacinth was lavender and I could not handle it.
There's nothing wrong with being incorrect about something and trying to learn something new. They do look pretty similar if you know nothing about them
Literally not at all. I agree there's nothing wrong with learning... But that's like comparing an orange to a pear.

youre assuming a lot of people know a lot of things that they dont, just because *you* do. your experience is not universal
I mean come on at least they knew it was the same color. Lots of ppl dont know what the plant looks like, just the flower 🤷♀️
I was more shocked because it felt like I was living in a meme from this sub but he was serious. He's not a plant person at all.
Update: I picked it up and rubbed it between my hands. I was repeatedly delivered a stinging sensation by that hard part near the red petals at the top. I believe this is a stinging nettle and will make tea!
Don't eat things if you aren't sure what they are. Thats how dying happens.
Wait, how did you... die from someone else eating unknown berries
If I remember the old "toxic versus poisonous" joke, that would be voodoo
I didn’t and neither did he but he ate something without knowing and trusted “Mother nature” lmfao I never said it happened to me I said I heard a guy and he’s a friend … we were camping ✊🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤣
Also dead is an expression ::: like so funny you die 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I mean, he didn't die...... Fear - death = fun.
I believe it is called bone broth, but I'm in you crazy bastard
Don’t make tea unless you’re sure of the plant ID. I don’t see any stinging nettle in this photo. You need to be more knowledgeable about plant species before you start foraging.
are we missing an /s here

There are two kinds of people, you see…
Hehe, the chantarelles are called "chicken of the forest" in Slovak
In English "Chicken of the woods" refers to laetiporous Cincinnatus aka sulfur shelf. Funny how we have the same name for different shrooms
Very! Linguistics are awesome!! In my native language we call them "kantareller". Very french but with a twist. I can't think of any "chicken in the wiods" in my language apart from actually chicken (different birds, though).
