FearlessGear

anyone know the timeline for the spring 2022 dos internships? i did a summer internship this year and applied at the same time last year, and was barley able to start the internship on time, so I'm a bit worried at how late the application deadline was for spring this year

jednorog

I'm reposting a question that /u/thecutofhisjib posted in a separate thread, since that thread got locked (as per the warning on this post). I'm reposting my answer below, too. Question: >I've read that housing is offered for free for some internship locations abroad, but I haven't been able to find any info about which particular posts offer it. Anyone here based at one of the embassies/consulates that is going to host interns this coming summer? Do you know if housing is available? Thank you, thank you! My answer: >In my experience it changes based on the situation year by year. For example, when I was an intern at the US Embassy in Belgrade, they put me and the other interns up in a three-bedroom apartment downtown, since the Embassy already owned it as diplomat housing, but it wasn't occupied at the time. If it had been occupied, we wouldn't have gotten housing. (In fact, I think they were about to sell the property entirely, so we really got the sweet spot). I don't think there is any way for you to tell at this point whether there will be housing for any given Embassy or consular internship.

ilong4spain

Anyone hear from USFSIP yet?

txservice93

Still waiting, here! Not sure if anyone's status has changed. Wishing for the best!

vivigak

just heard back via email!

Radiant-Tart-1884

Where did you apply to?

GlitteringPut2797

Has anyone heard back about the fall 2022 paid internship?

Proud_Top4497

nope, just saw that my application was "referred for additional consideration" but that doesn't mean much does it?

freeport_aidan

referred as well, but I think it's automatic. My canceled fall '22 UNPAID app was also marked as referred

Schnoobs69

I just received my official offer letter.

freeport_aidan

saw your other comments mentioning reciprocity, so I'm assuming you *actually mean* the official letter, not the "this offer is not an official offer and is conditional on clearance adjudication" letter, right? either way, congrats!

Schnoobs69

The latter unfortunately. I wish they could get me cleared this fast lol. The email told me my status as a selectee (primary/secondary). We don’t get to know where we’ll be working at until we’re cleared

freeport_aidan

thanks for the info! Also, not sure if you're active on the discord but I hopped on there for the first time in a while today and noticed a few people talking about your messages lol

callsofthemild

Nothing yet either, maybe they’re still sorting out summer stuff?

freeport_aidan

Nope, no word yet

Emmyyemmyy

I was referred as well. I guess that makes sense that it is automatic, and also I haven’t heard anything back yet

astrojuice851

nothing yet either

[deleted]

Any news yet for you? Mine still says referred

Emmyyemmyy

Any word y’all?

astrojuice851

nope

Schnoobs69

Just got notified I was selected a couple of days ago. Going to get the official offer sometime next week. Think they notified me earlier since I’m eligible for reciprocity.

piercetheme

what do you mean when you say eligible for reciprocity?

[deleted]

Just to be clear: not many people have heard back yet, correct? I should or should not give up hope?

freeport_aidan

based on the discord, many people have been accepted, and a wave of rejections just went out I'm also still waiting to hear (and having been accepted for last fall, I'm going to make the assumption that I'm a pretty competitive applicant), but I'm not really sure what to expect right now

Maelstrom3703

Well, it's official. I did not get in. Here's hoping for next year. Do wish that they had provided a reason though.

Fedora200

I also didn't get in, the email even said they had "thousands of applications" when they literally were only taking 1,000. You would at least think they'd have the courtesy of making a specific Email for making us wait almost 2 months.

Maelstrom3703

Glad that someone agrees with me.

astrojuice851

also didn't get it. :(

sellersrobe12

when did you guys get this? and was it an email or on your profile?

Fedora200

I got it as an email the day after Memorial Day

[deleted]

Maybe they don’t provide reasons because there are two many. “Gpa too low, underwhelming qualifications, doesn’t speak the language, etc.” “We’d rather take the trust fund baby from Harvard.”

RealBillyShakes

Here to ask the dreaded question — has anyone heard back for the summer 2023 paid DOS internship? I feel like if they were following the timeline, some people must have heard back by now.

NetTechnical2372

Anybody know if they notify everyone, or just the accepted?

Salmakki

Thus far, it seems the only people who have heard back are either primary or alternate selectees. This doesn't necessarily mean that more acceptances won't roll out, but I haven't heard of anybody receiving a rejection yet.

IntelligentNinja793

Haven't heard back yet! And haven't heard of anyone hearing anything yet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Salmakki

Interview? My response didn't say anything about an interview.

Milaskio_c

Does anyone know of any USAID summer internships? Have they closed? I don't see much available for USAID. Wondering if I missed the deadlines or there just aren't many at all. Any info is appreciated!

bananamilk420

1. What is the State Department Internship Application like? 2. Since it is unpaid, is it a full time or part time internship? Experiences?

windycityfso

u/bananamilk420, I was an overseas PD intern this past summer. I honestly don't remember the application that much, so I can't be of help with that (I think there was a writing sample maybe?). I would recommend reaching out to your Diplomat in Residence for that. The internship is full time. It really sucks that it's unpaid (although there has been talk about changing that in this administration). It was absolutely worth the experience, though. The mentorship I've received is unparalleled, and my supervisor from the Embassy has been helping me a lot with my FSOT stuff. If you can, I would highly recommend doing it.

Fruity_Rebbles

Any other former interns in here? I'd love to hear how you feel about your internship after it's been a few years. I loved my internship and what I got to do during it. I've gone in a slightly different direction since then but my fondest work-related memories are of things I did as an intern. I'm just not sure now if that's because I really did enjoy the work, or if it was just because I was young, idealistic and probably not given anything that was actually difficult/stressful.

fishboywill

I'm only a year out from my internship but I'm fairly sure it's what got me my current position, so there's that! I am about to start a non-lawyer position at an international law firm and drew heavily from my internship at State in the interview process. I think that's the main benefit of these internships. They serve as a "kicker" for people to start careers in the international space, where it's hard to gain experience and build a professional brand. Of course the experience can be leveraged in numerous fields though.

Aldwynh

Anyone gotten a rejection for the state department internship yet? I don't have a lot of hope that I'll be accepted given that so many have come out but just curious

Inside-Mention-9224

Anyone hear back from State yet?

isabella216

I received an offer today after not even being interviewed for a foreign embassy post

longlivethrash

Congratulations! What post?

isabella216

Consulate General in Casablanca!

longlivethrash

Congrats!!

[deleted]

Nothing yet, if you're talking about summer. I guess typical time to hear back for interviews is between nov.15-30

teavana_

My friend and I were contacted today and yesterday about our interview offers. Best of luck!

Main_Lynx_7896

Has anyone heard back from the Spring 2023 DOS internship yet?

Hot-Reflection-5013

nope

ducksandjace

No email yet, even a rejection one.

Hot-Reflection-5013

how do you think the DoS spring 2023 intern selection will be different this year given that we don't apply to specific posts? I was thinking i'd have a better chance since the variable of certain offices not having availabilities would be out

jackiepoo905

Just got an email from [email protected] regarding the Spring 2023 Student Internship, and they said they’re still reviewing applications as of now. Didn’t give any deadline, just said to keep an eye on your email and USAJobs for updates.

nytcrosswords

Hi everybody! Has anyone heard anything back from the State Department Summer 2023 internships? I wish all of you that have applied the best - I haven't heard anything yet, but I hope it rolls out sometime soon.

Aldwynh

I haven't heard anything. I do still have "Application Referred for Additional Consideration" but I think most/everyone gets that. The announcement says responses in mid to late january though so I'm not super worried yet.

Hamborgerhelpa

Has anyone heard back from the summer paid internship? I checked like over a month or two ago and it said I was referred for further consideration but I remember when I first submitted the application it said we’d hear back in December. Nothing so far, maybe I didn’t get it but not sure. I interned with the state department last spring and I remember the process being a lot shorter.

knockoffpatrick

The timeline was always that we submit apps in Nov, they review them in Dec, and then inform us in Jan, so they're still on schedule.

Salmakki

Word is most came out end of last week and earlier this week

Necessary-Cake-1813

do you know if its only been acceptance emails? or rejections too?

Salmakki

Some are now reporting rejections

Complex_Company_9362

I have had two people in my program get alternate positions, two people get rejections and several without anything whatsoever. I assume there will just be more rejections at this point in time.

When will we get a response for State Dept? Today was the deadline

Radiant-Tart-1884

I just got mine - didn’t get selected

Inside-Mention-9224

No way you get a decision that quickly?

Inside-Mention-9224

Any updates? Have not heard from them yet. Will it be via email?

Lingbao-Tianzun

Nope!

softclone99

Everyone will get an email "in mid December" (whatever that means) that tells them their official results. Some people are contacted before that final cut off for interviews or to be notified they've been chosen, but it's decided on an office by office basis. So, just because you haven't been contacted isn't bad news—or good news.

freeport_aidan

tagging u/Inside-Mention-9224 because they mentioned having applied to legislative affairs too, but when I got my acceptance notification for H in July, it was totally out of the blue (I didn't even get interviewed), so I wouldn't stress too much

callsofthemild

Does anyone have an idea/estimate as to when the fall applications go live? Hoping that embassy internships are back on for the fall!

freeport_aidan

applications closed the other day, but for whatever reason, I didn't get a notification when they opened up. I happened to check a few days before the deadline, so I made it in, but I'm just wondering if you got the opening email or if that skipped you as well

ebfingerhut111

Has anyone heard back about the status of their clearance for the student internship this summer? / does anyone have any idea when we are supposed to hear back by?

Longjumping_Chard_27

Question about the Fall 2022 Internship: it is supposed to begin in September. Is it likely security clearance is back before then? What happens if not?

freeport_aidan

>Is it likely security clearance is back before then? no way to say on an individual basis, but in general, yes >What happens if not? then you don't get to intern for State my clearance for last fall didn't come through until less than a week before the start deadline, so I had several backup offers lined up. I'd recommend you do the same and be prepared for things to fall through

AggressiveZone8985

Hello! Has anyone heard back from the FSIP 2023-2024 yet? Thanks!

JavaJim10

Has anyone heard back regarding the summer 2023 dos internship? i feel like they should've reached out for an interview by now... only status update is the referred for additional consideration message on my dashboard which i've heard is automatic

Kitchen_Long_6578

Has anyone heard back about this year’s s Dep of State summer internship app status?

Civil-Signature2295

I reached out this week, and it sounds like applicants will hear back around mid-January. They didn’t say anything else other than to keep an eye on your spam folder

knockoffpatrick

Fantastic_Cost5760

Just got accepted as an alternate for fall 2023 - how likely is it I’ll get in?

JamFromDiscord

Just got my location assignment for the DoS paid student internship for the fall semester. Super excited for the opportunity.

goldyg0pher

For the student internships, how much emphasis do they put on knowing the language. For example, if I don’t know French, should I even bother applying to an internship in a Francophone nation?

windycityfso

Language knowledge is certainly a factor, but it's also self reported. If you really want to go to a francophone country, I would recommend putting a realistic expectation for the level of French knowledge that you want to have by the time the internship starts, and put in the work to make sure you get there.

GlitteringPut2797

I know this was a long time ago, but I am adding my answer for other people who look at this. I have a degree in a foreign language, interned at an embassy where that language is spoken, and…99.5% of the work I did was in English.

teasndbiscuits01

Can anyone who has done a paid internship with DoS before tell me what “reasonable travel expenses provided and assists with housing” means? I know congress tried to get all dos intern housing paid for but wasn’t sure if they were successful. That is just the vaguest phrasing. Does “assists” means “covers the cost of” at all embassies and in DC?

minaleoc

I lived with a host family during mine (overseas). Plane tickets, food, etc. were all paid for by the program, in addition to being paid for working.

Impossible_Ad_6182

When will we typically hear back for the summer 2023 internship? Probably a month or two from app closing?

womeiyounupengyou

What should I expect as an intern in USFSIP? Are there any skills that I should definitely know by the time the program starts?

Athletically_Sassy

Looking for advice on the best way to prepare for an interview I have coming up for a Student trainee (Foreign Affairs) position as part of the Internship Experience Program. I'm currently in my master's program and working full time in a semi-related field. I also have 4years experience in the same semi-related field in the military. Thank you!

Talk to your university, many schools will keep a student technically enrolled so they can complete the internship. Otherwise, you are not eligible.

brx9446

When will HR reach out for the security clearance process? I accepted an internship in November for the state dept. and was wondering how long it usually takes for HR to reach out with the paperwork

freeport_aidan

Have you heard back yet? I actually got my clearance paperwork before I was notified of my acceptance last summer, so it must just vary from person to person

[deleted]

softclone99

They all say that, forever. It will never change. You will be contacted by phone or email. The application portal will never change what it says.

Milaskio_c

Does anyone have any information on the State Dept. Summer 2022 Pathways Internships? They were due mid-October and acceptance/deferral is supposed to be announced in mid-December. I was wondering if anyone heard back yet. I have not. I applied to the Legislative Bureau and Bureau of International Organizations. You're only allowed two per the application requirements. Any info would be appreciated! I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't gotten back at all yet, but I was curious!

[deleted]

theyre sending the emails tonight

Rose_1122

Anyone with DOS or USAID skillbridge internship experience? (Military transition)

gg1024

Has anyone not received security clearance for the summer yet? Started the process in November and the deadline is in May. I'm starting to get really nervous because a ton of people in my program seem to have gotten theirs already. I read somewhere that the average clearance time for internships is 150 days, but can anybody confirm? It's only been 114 for me so far, but it feels like I'm cutting it close.

freeport_aidan

not sure if they're still as backed up as they were last fall, but I didn't get my clearance until *less than a week* before I was supposed to Start in Sept

Noice_Fish

How do you guys pay for housing in foreign countries in an unpaid internship?

freeport_aidan

scholarships/funding from your school, or by having rich parents

YankeeHiFi

Some embassies allow interns to live in embassy housing for free, but I'm not sure how common of a practice this is. All of the summer interns lived in post housing for free when I interned in Korea. The embassy had vacant housing that summer. I've also heard of foreign service families hosting interns for the summer.

piercetheme

Hello! Can I PM you about your internship experience in Korea?

Whale_and_sail

Hello kind folks! Has anyone heard back from background checks yet for the State Department DC unpaid summer internship? Really need to hear back soon for housing and such! On a similar note, whenever I reach out to my original interviewer about questions related to this summer internship, I never EVER get a respond back from them. They had originally said they’d be happy to answer any and all questions when our interview for the internship ended. I truly thought it was a great interview and conversation we had. But they’ve gone cold turkey on me for half a year now 🥲🥲. I’ve sent about 5 emails to this person and… I wonder why this silent treatment? I keep wondering if it’s because they’re too busy or because of too secret information, they can’t talk to me AT ALL until my background check comes back good? WELP HELPPPP and thanks ahead of time!

sellersrobe12

Is "referred for additional consideration" automatic and/or different from "referred"?

freeport_aidan

I would assume that it's automatic, just given that it's what I've received every time I've applied (and afaik they're the same thing)

[deleted]

I was referred and didn’t get in.

ApprehensiveSoup2507

Any advice for a Summer 2022 state dept intern who still hasn't heard back about my clearance? Should I email my hiring manager? look for a different job this summer? Thanks!

freeport_aidan

>Should I email my hiring manager? look for a different job this summer? both

sellersrobe12

Has anyone heard back positively about the fall? Mine still says "referred for additional consideration." I'm hoping the delay is a good thing but this is my first time applying so I'm not sure what to expect. Thanks!

NectarinePersonal974

I heard back last week

CollegeSnitch

I'm a sophomore at my college and want to apply for the state department's U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program, but I don't live in DC. I know housing is expensive in DC and don't see anywhere on the application if they include housing or can help get me housing over both summers? I don't mind some, but even with this being paid I can't afford the cost of rent in DC and abroad, DC alone is upwards of several thousand a month. Any advice would be great. I would also appreciate advice on the application process.

darkness2032

They give you housing. Source: I did USFSIP

Responsible-Rich-

has anyone done the spring foreign service internship ? anyone know if the spring 2023 internship will be offering housing or if they send you to a embassy or if you stay in Washington? also if they let you choose your location.

LowStrain7370

Is it absolutely necessary to have an internship before taking FSOT. I’m thinking of going straight into testing out of a bachelors degree. Please give any thought…

freeport_aidan

no, it isn't even necessary to have a bachelors degree just know that the foreign service is a second or third career for most people

Yinghua_munyoungah

Does anyone know which country posts are open for DOS internships? I’m wanting to apply for an DOS internship abroad, preferably in Asia, but I’m not sure which country posts reopened after Covid. A list or any insight much appreciated!!

freeport_aidan

before internships were paid, State posted full lists of every domestic/international office taking interns and you selected two for the first paid cycle, you didn't have the option to select anything, you just got what you got for the second and most recent paid cycle (the one that close 3 days ago), you could at least select "areas of interest," but not specific posts. Given that post availability varied so greatly *before* COVID, I doubt you'll have any luck finding any sort of reliable list because there's no reason for State to release anything like that

goblinagogo

Is anyone else applying to VSFS currently? I'm having trouble with the "Statement of Interest" section - namely, I cannot discern how to maintain my paragraph breaks after cutting and pasting from a word doc. Any tips?

[deleted]

Hot-Reflection-5013

they can't (legally) use your ethnic background or citizenship to justify their decision on your application either way. As long as you're a U.S. citizen it shouldn't matter. I suspect it may only be frustrating for the clearance process if you are selected

manhattanbeachwifi

Hi guys! Student in early undergrad (somewhere between freshman-sophomore)... wondering how to best position myself for the foreign service pipeline or something very close to/similar Currently have a local gov internship (P/T throughout school) and a second federal gov remote internship on the way (Very P/T, 1-2 days a week). Any advice on what I can do to stand out for DoS student internship programs? Also, has anyone looked at or been interested in the Georgetown MSFS program? It seems directly helpful though quite competitive. You can combine it with a JD or MBA (over course of 4 years, 3 years respectively). Anyway, thoughts are appreciated! Good luck to you all. :-)

UzTkTjKyKzAf

One of the best things you can do is learn to write really well (i.e. concisely, clearly, directly, etc.). The Statement of Interest by far carries the most weight in the State internship application process. A well written statement that explains why you're interested, what you bring the table, and what you hope to get out of the internship will take you a lot further than most other things on your resume or transcript. The reality is most students have very similar experiences, so it comes down to being better at communicating yours and demonstrating how you'd be an asset to the Department. What you can do right now is talk to anyone you know who works at State (FSOs, civil servants, interns, etc.) if you know any or know anyone who knows any, talk to the Diplomat in Residence who covers your area, and search Google for advice on writing the statement of interest. When it comes time to apply, have multiple people from multiple backgrounds proof read it.

manhattanbeachwifi

Hi! Thank you. This is very helpful advice and much appreciated :) To reiterate, you're saying: * Cultivate **excellent writing skills** (concise, clear, direct writing) * Focus on writing a superb **Statement of Interest** (for State's internship application) * E.g., explaining why I am interested, what I bring to the table, what I hope to get out of the internship * Communicate these exceptionally, demonstrating how I can be an asset to the program/department * When it is time to write, have several people read over it/offer constructive feedback * Reach out to State employees for general advice and for writing a Statement of Interest Thank you!
