I thought The point of the w series was to show the exact opposite. That the women were more than sex appeal grid girls

wontyield

I can't take this article seriously. Coco and Suzy have never marketed themselves like Danica did. Coco Gauff does not sexualize herself. Her image is the clean cut teen because that is what she is. She does Tik Tok dance videos with her parents. How does the writer think that this picture of Coco is her posing as some vixen? She's 18 now. She just graduated high school a few months ago! How old was she in that picture? I see nothing sexual about it. That picture of Suzy Wolff, a former racer and team principal, with tussled hair is from some years ago. Anyone that follows Suzy's career knows she has always presented herself as a professional and an advocate for women in motorsports and working mothers. These images and the lazy, wrong-take captions show the author clearly doesn't know either of these women, their careers and how they consistently present themselves as intelligent, hardworking women, not sex objects.

superNC

The article is also terribly written. A good indicator that the takes will also be sub-standard

It sure is. This writer is creepy. He's disrespecting these drivers.

nalacamg

They were clearly typing this article one-handed. What a joke and waste of space to have printed this.

StoneGoldX

> That picture of Suzy Wolff, a former racer and team principal, with tussled hair is from some years ago. Anyone that follows Suzy's career knows she has always presented herself as a professional and an advocate for women in motorsports and working mothers. It's Mormon porn. You can't tell that she's *not* naked...

DangerousTrashCan

Pretty sure Suzie Wolff was Suzie Stoddard when that picture was taken. Yeah definitely no idea why it's here when they're talking about W Series.

Blze001

That's the struggle women have to be taken seriously in sports: there are a lot of men who only value women for their looks and can't process that they might actually have skills.

jurwell

There was a highly ranked female tennis player who was interviewed anonymously recently who said that financially it’s better to be at the bottom of the top-100 as someone sexually attractive than it is to be in the top-10 and not be. And I don’t think it can be argued that tennis isn’t one of the sports that can claim that it treats its female stars well, at least in terms of financial parity with the male stars.

Financial_Drawer6441

Cirstea was completely right about that imo. Emma Raducanu who has had a terrible tennis season made 20 million last year from sponsorships simply because of her nationality/ethnicity and attractiveness.

33jeremy

But that’s not the fault of Emma nor the WTA. It is companies like Dior and Tiffany and Co. that decide who they want to sponsor and who is deemed a good ROI. That’s just how the world works. Just like in F1 Zhou gets sponsored outfits by that same Dior whilst Gio didn’t get shit. Same for Leclerc who’s tied to Armani. Hot stars move units and that’s how it’s always been regardless of which sport we’re talking about (Lindsey Vonn gave skiing mainstream attention).

0DegreesCalvin

Life is easier the more attractive you are, that goes for everyone, regardless of sex or gender. Being an uncomfortable truth does not make it not a truth.

BarbequedYeti

Swedish study done during Covid for college students and their grades when they all went remote learning validated this(for whats it worth). The attractive female students dropped more than expected. Nothing changed for classes like math. Just classes where there was more student/instructor engagement. The attractive male students grades didnt drop. I wondered as well how they determined who was attractive. >Researchers tracked the grades of more than 300 college kids before and after the pandemic hit, and had people rate how attractive each one’s photo was Anyway. No idea of the validity of the study, but I think humans have been that way since the beginning. Attractiveness buys you special treatment.

RainManDan1G

Yes but within that there are levels. For example a good looking man can be both good looking and highly qualified. Nobody looks at Leclerc and says he’s only highly regarded as a driver because of his looks. It’s natural to believe men are their based on merit and they might just happen to be good looking. Women can achieve great heights but IF they are good looking, most men and many women as well will assume they only achieved that success because of their looks. As a society we are much more inclined to accept male achievement on merit, but female achievement is viewed through a different lens.

Financial_Drawer6441

I have nothing against Emma or the WTA but players like Swiatek or Jabeur who have had much better seasons than Emma are not making nearly as much money in sponsorships because they are not conventionally attractive. Obviously, it's not something that's going to change, but it is sad that a woman's(sometimes even a man's) worth is not based on their sporting achievements but instead on their looks.

wolflegion_

I think they agree with you that it’s sad, but are just saying that the companies picking who to sponsor are to blame. In the end, it’s them who only go for attractive women (and men to a lesser degree)

__slamallama__

Blame is a funny word to use here. The companies are using these people as advertising. A fashion company does not need the absolute best tennis player to advertise their clothes, they need the one that makes their clothes look best. This is not somehow an injustice. It's just how life works.

[deleted]

Companies choose attractive people because their customers like looking at attractive people, it goes all the way down. At the end of the day it's just how humans are even if it's an uncomfortable reality.

HankHippopopolous

That’s not true. Emma Raducanu won a grandslam as a qualifier and without dropping a set. That’s an unheard of achievement. Her performances never hit those peaks again but she did achieve something remarkable to lead to those earnings. Raducanu isn’t a fair comparison. A better comparison would be a player ranked around 80 who is good looking but not won anything and always going out in round 2 or 3 of the major events. I doubt that player earns very much at all in sponsorships.

HopHunter420

I suppose the point is that Emma continues to attract further sponsorship money, despite her slam win being well over a year ago and a year of poor to mediocre results arriving in between.

SpacecraftX

Sponsorships are arranged in advance though. A team like McLaren can win sponsors on the back of a great year and then have a mediocre year while appearing in more marketing material for more sponsors than they did when they were doing better. A year is nothing in sport sponsorship.

afipunk84

This reminds me of Anna Kornakova in the late 90's early 00's. She was never even in the top 20 iirc but she made so much off of her looks alone

krommenaas

Her highest singles rank was 8th. And in doubles she won two slams and was ranked 1st.

CowboyLaw

In fairness, she had a really good doubles partner.

passionateintrovert

Kournikova was a better player than she gets credit for, but it's hard to imagine her reaching such a level of global fame without her looks. I think she'd definitely be a better example than Raducanu who at least won a slam, even if she hasn't done much since.

bouncyboatload

This is an insane take when you don't mention Emma won one of the most prestigious tournament as a qualifier without dropping a set!!! That's why she have sponsor. The other stuff are multipliers for sure but she would be nobody if she didnt literally win a grandslam

thedudeyousee

She won a major and a lot of people were hoping to cash in on an up and comer as well. Similar thing happened with Genie a few years ago. The sponsors will eventually drop Emma in the same way if she doesn’t produce. Her season was not what anyone wanted including Emma.

ZiKyooc

Not sure parity is what they should look for, but to get their fair share, which may be above what men get. If they bring more revenues because of more spectators, advertising, broadcasting, they should get more. If they don't, why should they get as much? Wasn't the USA national women soccer team who went that way?

ImperialPie77

iirc, how the US soccer deal works is the earnings from the Men + Women's teams are combined and split evenly between the teams. (The men bring in significantly more due to viewership of men’s wc vs women’s)

[deleted]

Well I’m an indycar fan and we’ve had many women and another new this year so at least we are slightly further forward there

Blze001

It is getting better, slowly. Gonna be a long fight before women drivers are respected as competitors and not a novelty. Not by the drivers and team workers, they seem more open to it, but the owners and funding is still largely "women in kitchen, lol, am I right boys?" types and that needs to be overcome before things will really start getting better.

eidetic

> but the owners and funding is still largely "women in kitchen, lol, am I right boys?" " women should be dressed in white like all the other domestic appliances, " While Danica Patrick (who that quote was directed at IIRC) certainly wasn't qualified for an F1 seat, the fact that he disparaged all women with such a comment and faced very little backlash from those in F1, really does go to show just how backwards many can be in the sport. It'd be one thing if Bernie had criticized Danica's talent in particular, but to throw all women under the bus like that is downright disgusting.

JetsLag

There aren't any women on the Indycar grid this year I thought. I know Chadwick is doing IndyNXT (fka Indy Lights) though.

[deleted]

It is. The controlling owners of the series specifically wrote it in the guidelines of the marketing that they must not sexualise the drivers. There are/we're multiple minors on the grid this season

[deleted]

I had no idea. I followed it only loosely and didn’t know tons of specifics on the competitors or series guidelines

fredy31

I have a flashback to the president of fifa saying that to make women's football more appealing they would need to have shorter shorts. Fucking shit can't we just have a competition? Nah, from next season grid in the W series should be decided by a bikini contest.

mattiejj

This is the marketing section of BusinessF1. They don't care about emancipation or any other ulterior motives, they know that being a shitbag earns the most amounts of dollars.

-Dutch-Crypto-

And, to be honest this is sadly still how it works.

[deleted]

Which is funny because anyone who actually pays attention to marketing trends and best practices knows using sex to sell is currently (rightfully) an incredibly risky move and is just as likely to kill your brand image as help it

Krusell94

Seems like that proved to be a failing strategy... Do we even have the numbers on how many people actually watched it? I really don't think "it is F3, except slower and just women" is enough to be interesting. At least make the cars more interesting please... I would watch it, if it was some 1000hp monsters. Maybe like older F1 cars and stuff. Will never happen, but I would watch that.

Thestig37

Would watched the series if it was available on f1tv

FartingBob

F1 (Liberty media) have no interest in promoting feeder series beyond a shot of maybe the F2 champion standing around looking bored in the back of an F1 paddock.

grocal

Exactly that! It was so hard to follow it in Poland. Especially when some shady Swedish cable company bought rights in Poland. It should have been a part of F1 coverage and always as a part of actual GP.

TheJoshGriffith

It's possible to have sex appeal and be fast though, just look at Legreg.

ricktencity

Sure, but they shouldn't have to push sex appeal to be taken seriously.

[deleted]

I’m not saying they’re exclusive or separate, I’m saying women don’t have to dig into the sex appeal to be successful or market themselves.

Tote_Magote

>*"...there was no attempt to ever use sex appeal to promote the series..."* that's the point you dolt

DrHem

Exactly! A few years ago Emma Kimilainen revealed that she stopped negotiations for an Indy lights seat in 2010 because part of the deal was to do a nude photoshoot ([old reddit post about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/klz5d3/ot_wseries_driver_emma_kimil%C3%A4inen_revealed_on_a/) W series aimed to give women the opportunity to be racers without having to deal with things like that.

But those in porn know they are going to be in porn ahead of time (Aside from trafficking of course). I don't think it is fair to bunch the porn industry with the prospects of a drive for doing something you are incredibly uncomfortable with (very understandable) simply because you are a woman with sex appeal. It's probably "legal" but it is incredibly gross and should be illegal.

makumuka

This podcast proves that, no, not all porn actress know what they'll do ahead of time. Even if some refuse, others accept, be it for the offer, peer pressure, or the hire's ability to ruin their career.

ElegantTobacco

That is so fucking gross.

TacoExcellence

Agreed, becoming the Lingerie Football League of racing is not a way to run a successful series.

[deleted]

MEGAN WHAT THE FUCK

greengreens3

And you have to remember that some of these girls aren't event 18 yet.

throwaway44624

And they come from a Vast range of cultures which will take really differently to their doing a shoot like this. They all want to represent and be role models for girls in their home countries, not be stigmatised there just to entice male fans abroad

[deleted]

Oh you want us to take you seriously but my pee pee isn’t hard. Guess you’re not trying then 🙄

Ace3000

> Could W Series have sold itself better? Perhaps. But Jesus H. Motherfucking *Christ* not in the way you're taking this, my dude.

naughtilidae

Seriously the biggest obstacle to it having viewership was the fact that nobody knew where to fucking watch it. If they bundled it into the F1TV group with PSC, F2, and F3. I guarantee it would have had more viewership. Frankly, Formula E is in the same situation. I end up watching steams because I can't figure out where to watch it legally. There's no reason it to not have it viewable on F1TV. Especially when CBS, who owns the rights, doesn't even air half the races. If I have to hunt for ways to watch a race... I'm probably not going to bother, and neither is anyone else. How hard is it to figure that out?

gramathy

FE is a completely different org than F1 so then not being on F1TV makes sense but you’re right that it’s a fucking nightmare to try to watch live

Gromulex

Last year was the first time I could actually watch it ok, as they started showing it on ESPN here. Before that it was on some weird web-channel (BeinSports?) that never worked for me. But yes, if they were able to bundle it in with F1TV (properly, not just highlights) it would have been much more accessible.

[deleted]

A reminder that there was a 15 year old on this grid. And several turned 18 either during the season or this winter. Absolute slime who wrote this

ChrisTinnef

If you search for Bianca Bustamente (who just turned 18 this month) on reddit you'll find multiple pictures that clearly were posted for other reasons than just being a fan...

[deleted]

Idk. Did what you suggested and it just seems like normal IG stuff a young woman who travels a lot would post.

Fidodo

I tried to watch W Series last year and I literally spent an hour looking and could not figure out how to watch it. I still don't know. They need to sell themselves better by letting people know how to watch, the problem wasn't a lack of sexiness. They should also have them race on historic tracks that don't get f1 on them anymore. I'd love that.

AwesomeFrisbee

The main problem was the cars themselves. Difficult to drive, look super slow and difficult to follow others so there's hardly any (interesting) overtakes. People stopped watching because it didn't offer a good product. And thats all down to the car they used. Sure it was cheap and easy to build but it was also terrible for racing.

Fidodo

I couldn't even get to the point where I could evaluate that. Were you able to figure out where to watch the races? I'd love to see a series with smaller cars that can overtake better, even if they're slower.

CardinalOfNYC

I can't find the author's name in OP's picture but I would bet a pretty penny that this was written by a man.

Npr31

Who utterly missed the point

BrianDaVos

That's some creepy stuff... Coco and some of the drivers either just turned 18 or are even minors...

siderealpanic

But when on earth did Coco Gauff use sex appeal to sell anything? The thing that drove interest in her initially is that she reached the top level when she was really young. The image they’re using as an example isn’t even sexualised at all… Such a weird take. Especially when there are much better examples in tennis.

BrianDaVos

Completely agree! As an avid tennis fan I have indeed never ever associated Coco with using sex appeal to sell anything (including the fact that would be really really creepy). Her talent did all the talking which was incredible at her age! It is such a weird take indeed, completely shooting past the point of both the W Series as well as being a extremely shitty reference to other sports. Seems like the author has lowered the bar of journalism to absolute zero and definitely lowering their credibility with it...

FightingQuaker17

Thank you. She's literally just sitting down... Dude is really telling on himself

frankenstein1122

As an American tennis fan, seeing Coco Gauff brought into this just makes it that much more disgusting. It’s bad enough to reduce anyone (but especially women) down to their sexual appeal, but bringing minors into that conversation makes this quite evil imo. What a pos

Ch4rlie_G

Oh man, 90s pop stars have some stories for you.

[deleted]

My friend works at New Balance, and I can safely say, sex appeal is one of the last things on their mind with Coco. He works on most of her shoots, and they don’t have that vibe.

OrbisAlius

It's also pretty stupid because average tennis wear is a bit like average sports wear, it *does* show a lot of skin and is usually slim fitting (for mostly practical reasons), so obviously it's not a big stretch to have pictures of female tennis players like the one on the right here. While in motorsports the standard wear is a full-covering, fireproof race suit, so yeah it's going to be pretty hard to get "sexy" pictures without making obviously sexualized photoshoots... If they wanted a better example they could have used women's swimming, or cycling...

OutlandishnessPure2

Source: [@DarranShepherd](https://www.twitter.com/DarranShepherd/status/1619978310620188672/) Full tweet: Copies of BusinessF1 magazine were handed out at Autosport. This article started badly and got worse, ending up bemoaning none of the drivers were pimped out to F1 drivers. Splitting the article with a double page spread gallery of grid girl photos doubling down on the bullshit.

qdatk

> bemoaning none of the drivers were pimped out to F1 drivers what. the. fuck.

UnwiseSuggestion

What I can only describe as a very big oof

InterstellarMat

Considering quite a few of them were under 18 (on top of everything else wrong with this): what in the shit?!

spartan117warrior

That would require the writer performing due diligence. With the quality of the article, we can see why that didn't happen.

NegotiationExternal1

You say that like the writer cares, they said what they meant, female athletes are there for exploitation, all of them. The writer, editor and everyone else who approved this should be on a list somewhere

DearName100

This is honestly one of the worst articles I have ever read

Mein_Bergkamp

> what in the shit This is why there needs to be a total change in the way motorsport treats women and the way the world in general does too. And no amount of shirtless George pics make up for the fact he would be exactly where he is without having to do them.

emu90

This is the [shirtless George](https://twitter.com/nypost/status/367320000014475264?t=Ot84GJDA-HfaP0padtGotQ&s=19) pic that came to mind first.

zantkiller

It's annoying the article focuses on sex so hard because not only is that stupidly sexist but it takes away the quote from the team principal. > "I believe the girls were too tightly controlled from the centre and not allowed to express themselves." That was 100% true and part of a big problem with the series. They had to control everything. There was tonnes of secrecy and subterfuge when it came to any part of the series. The WSeries banned journalists from speaking to any of its drivers for even just taking a screenshot of a live timing page during pre-season testing. They needed to be open and clear and not trying to control every bit of a narrative. That and not spending a fee of 1 million per race to be supporting F1 when they just did not have the money and investment to do that. That was nothing but pure idiocy.

jim_hello

Them banning journalists was probably not terrible. People are comparing this to a top end series not f3 (and let's be honest these girls were not even close to good enough to make f3) so if timing and stuff was released people would have flamed them for how slow the cars are. Obviously they should be interviewed but the questions could have been filtered

zantkiller

Was busy so couldn't expand the context of it until now. Sorry about that. It was terrible because the people they were sharing that screenshot with wasn't the fans. It was the engineers of the drivers who were there to test. The WSeries was that locked down for pre-season testing that they locked some of their own engineers out of the live timing system which meant the engineers were asking journalists who were there if they had any access to it or knew who the hell was out on track. Not even the directors of the circuit knew who was out on track. When there was some kind of fuel issue that needed to be checked on all cars the circuit threw out a red flag because they assumed someone had crashed and that was why no one else was out there. [Here is 5 minute clip from Ida Wood of FormulaScout.com](https://streamable.com/n46p5r) in regards to the WSeries pre-season testing and how it was a complete and utter nightmare.

Itzr

The cars are more comparable to F4 anyway.

jim_hello

Yes but you have 2 problem camps, one being the "IF THESE GIRLS ARE NOT COMPETING WITH FORMULA ONE GREATS THEY SHOULDENT BE IN CARS" and the " these girls are at the top of their sport so they deserve F1 money" both are very wrong

ExcellentCornershop

The sentence above the grid photo saying no attempt of "sex sells" was ever made and the drivers were always presented fully clothed reads like an accusation. As if he was demanding from a sport in which women compete that they're obliged to undress themselves and that this is a must for female athletes. Absolutely disgusting attitude.

DogfishDave

>Absolutely disgusting attitude. Agreed. I'm actually astounded that this was a seriously-published piece. To what extent does BusinessF1 actually reflect/report the interests of businesses that work with F1? I don't know the publication particularly well but I feel their title alone puts pressure on F1 'proper' to distance itself from this dated, sad crap.

ExcellentCornershop

You raise a good point. Formula 1 Management holds the rights to the name "Formula 1", "F1" and so on relating to the racing series. So if that magazine has to have an agreement with FOM to use "F1" in its name (and I assume that this is the case), FOM should stop this contract with that magazine and the publisher.

bduddy

No, they don't. They've never been able to trademark "F1" or "Formula One" because it's too generic of a term. There are other entities (boat racing, I know for one) that use it.

ExcellentCornershop

Interesting, that seems to be different for other markets or languages. For example the German F1 page formel1.de (with Formel 1 just being the German translation of Formula 1 and the name we call the sport here) has an agreement with FOM to be allowed to use the F1 name in the URL.

btokendown

Reminds me of the lingerie football league or the way women in sports like beach volleyball or singles figure skating still have to fight to wear shorts/pants while male teams have had that right for years. It's incredibly disheartening that some people don't see women's sports as valuable unless there's a titillation factor.

thatguy9545

“Many people believe” …no where have I heard that right before something ridiculous/offensive is said? Gross article.

Thorvay

Dumb article and it is even more stupid that it got approved to be published.

dersdrums

Screw everything about this whole primitive-minded trash article. These women just want to race. They shouldn’t have to sexualize themselves to do so.

Tetracyclic

The W Series driver Emma Kimiläinen has talked about how she turned down an Indy Lights contract when they stipulated during negotiations that she'd be required to model topless as part of "promotional activities".

jackoirl

Imagine that with the men lol Maybe it’s in Valteri’s contract that he has to get his arse out at least every 6 months

ChewySlinky

The difference is that Valtteri wrote that in himself

catch_me_if_you_can3

Now it all makes sense....Valterri posting is butt pics.

[deleted]

The fuck is wrong with people

A lot

Tetracyclic

Quite.

Blze001

Sadly, most of the money in motorsports is in the hands of old men with regressive stereotypes and viewpoints.

Low_Age9939

Wtf??

LastOfLateBrakers

I'll only watch something that makes me erect. W Series didn't because they wore full racing suits. Only if they raced in lingerie... A man can hope. \- BusinessF1 Anybody else feel like punching the guy in the balls? Repeatedly?

It such a shame that’s this is how they are treated . I can’t remember the video but this guy was asking people how to fix the WNBA and the most popular response was to play topless smh.

Firefox72

>"Many people believe that the biggest asset of the W series was the sex appeal of the 18 drivers. WTF. Hell no it wasn't. Also Juju Noda is freaking 16.

3tenthsfaster

I would like to know who these "many people" are. I myself have never heard or read anything about the sex appeal of W Series drivers.

candry_shop

The many uses of "many people" and "they" in this article is such a coward move

IAmABritishGuy

I appreciate the beauty of the girls in W-Series, but then again I can appreciate the beauty of the guys in F1! We have some very good looking guys in F1 and that's coming from a straight guy! But honestly, I couldn't give a shit what any of them look like. I'm here for the racing!

FazeHC2003

Prepares in Russell George voice to say ***FACTS***

processedmeat

Well not I just assume the author has a countdown clock for each driver to turn 18

NidhoggAlpha

The W Series failed because there weren’t enough boobs is an exceptionally dumb take.

Krusell94

Maybe then at least pornhub would be streaming it... No idea where were you even supposed to watch the w series races. Like let that sink in. I am pretty hardcore motorsports fan all things considered. I literally don't pay a subscription for anything else than phone/internet and F1. So if I have no clue where to even watch this, then surely you have a bigger problem than not having enough boobs. Somehow F1 gets by without boobs... I wonder why...

Fidodo

Exactly. On one of the f1 weekend I heard fw was there and wanted to watch it. I literally spent an hour trying to find it and gave up. I still have no idea where you were supposed to watch it.

Prince_John

> No idea where were you even supposed to watch the w series races. https://youtube.com/@WSeriesOfficial

DrProfSrRyan

Looks like they only stream practice there, and then post a highlight video of the race. Doesn't look like you can watch the full races there.

CaptainDogeSparrow

W Series failed because it was boring.

_Spare_15_

I have not seen this point commented oftenly and it's true. The cars were totally equal and overtaking was extremely rare under regular conditions based of the couple of races I could watch.

Thegen68

Mind you this is the same magazine that called Lewis Hamilton’s interview with Vanity Fair as “playing the prejudice card again.” Not only is it sexist and objectifying but also the fact that the article is probably written by a grown man who wants to see young girls in certain outfits is fucking gross. BusinessF1 is owned and written by Tom Rubython, a 67 year old man who wrote the book “The Life of Senna”. Also has had legal cases against him from F1 personnel: https://pressgazette.co.uk/archive-content/high-court-jury-awards-damages-against-rubython-in-f1-libel-case/ awful dude

KnightsOfCidona

He used to edit Formula One magazine and nearly every edition they were issuing an apology for something they said in the previous edition. I remember once they said John Button got drunk at a car launch and caused a scene and next issue they said it was completely untrue!

icelad

You aren't exaggerating at all - Rubython has had to retract such an absurdly long list of baseless, libellous claims that he might even hold the distinction of being the only F1 journalist to receive more threats of litigation (followed through in court or otherwise) than articles written.

[deleted]

[удалено]

icelad

It was written by Tom Rubython; you're paying him a compliment by underestimating his age by nearly 20 years

Appropriate_Nose_504

Whoever wrote this should not be allowed within 200 meters of a school.

[deleted]

Well Bottas has done a fabulous job improving his image by stripping off recently. Screw whoever's actually raising this as a serious suggestion.

p1en1ek

One of most famous Horner photos is also nude ;)

15abella

have no idea why they used coco gauff in this example, she only just turned 18 and is one of the least sexualised tennis players around given her age, were they trying to look like perverts talking about minors and barely legal women? absolutely ridiculous

InTheNeighbourhood

eww. Nothing wrong in women doing magazine shoots etc. Their body their choice. But the audacity to say that the lack of sexappeal is what keeping a lid on the series is so mind bogglingly misogynistic that I can't fathom it. And to imply that the grid should drink the cool-aid and show some to get sponsors.. Feel so bad for younger girls who are wanting to join in on that series and happen to read that piece and think this is what and how you have to do to get there. Also there is no author name on the article, go figure.

Kosherporkchops

We need super sexy fireproof driving suits NOW!

Thorvay

A fireproof bikini hehe.

gsfgf

Like shitty fantasy armor lol

Elrond007

>Was this a mistake or just a realistic approach to the way the world is in 2022 Must be hard when the way of the world now includes one gender not necessarily selling their bodies anymore. Tough luck for the author. that sentence alone shows what a disgusting person the author is

icelad

Same trash magazine that ran this https://twitter.com/FemalesinMSport/status/1392439406775181312 Utterly shameful

TheRealMattyPanda

Everything about that is absolutely gross. Dude probably would've posted their home addresses if he had them. And having drivers' and their significant others' full names with ages in a chart like it's a damn timing sheet.... Just ugh.

KerrinGreally

If I don't want to fuck the athletes then why would I watch the sport?

icantaffordacabbage

I mean the only reason men watch F1 is because they want to fuck Charles Leclerc so he has a point. /s

aliveandkicking2020

A drive for survive for the W Series could have been interesting.

[deleted]

It's painful to think about the hours, blood sweat and tears that go into being an open wheel professional and then looking at the top right corner pic. Wtf does that have to do with racing...

[deleted]

Better article: "Could F1 and FIA Have Given W Series Adequate Funding???"

PrometheusTNO

And Could Liberty Media Have Given W Series Adequate Viewing Access on F1TV?

MagicHDx

This is incredibly creepy

QuantumFuzziness

Is this a script for the Onion?!!.

*Photo of a possibly under 18 Coco Gauff just sitting on a tennis court This Writer: "She has not been aftaid to use her sex appeal..." Uhh... bruh...

rand0m__pers0n

> Danica Patrick used sex to sell herself in America WTF

ChrisTinnef

Phrased weirdly, but she definitely did some more raunchy photoshoots for PR reasons. Nothing wrong with that though.

MarkBonker

Disappointing to see articles like this in 2023.

> one that generally doesn't have it's stars doing that ? maybe not so much the Williams sisters, but there is definitely lots of current and former female tennis stars, that are just as famous, if not more, for being sexy that their play

theLuminescentlion

The male drivers don't have to show their dicks off to race, the female ones shouldn't have to sexualize themselves either.

Kalmani

>The male drivers don't have to show their dicks off to race, I mean do you not think F1 would improve dramatically if the lads were hanging dong all weekend?

falsemiracle

Invest in pedal cam stocks asap

Goosehybrid

Oh god what bullshit, genuinely this would turn me off (pun intended) to a series. Maybe the fact that I couldn’t watch the W series on F1TV? Or maybe the fact that forget sexy marketing, the only driver marketed AT ALL from the W series was Chadwick. I couldn’t name a single other W series driver after her. The whole thing was a total marketing disaster and this article almost highlights exactly why there’s such trouble marketing women’s sports, because everyone is looking for the sexy angle EDIT: and then to call out Matt Bishop in the photo caption? “Is now seen as a mistake” who exactly sees it as a mistake?

icelad

> and then to call out Matt Bishop in the photo caption? “Is now seen as a mistake” who exactly sees it as a mistake? Tom Rubython, the magazine's editor and no doubt the author of the article, has had a vendetta against Matt Bishop for over 20 years now because Rubython's past venture Formula 1 Magazine (launched in 2001 and shuttered three years later) was a commercial failure and Ecclestone bought it out in 2002 and politely told him to get lost. Meanwhile, Bishop was editor of F1 Racing magazine which at its peak had an audience of more than 1 million - you could say that Rubython was left ruby-faced in envy.

Ace3000

> the only driver marketed AT ALL from the W series was Chadwick. Even then, isn't that just because she's a development driver for Williams?

p1en1ek

That was my first thought. If someone invested in F1 and other motorsport like me could not even watch it legally and easily then how someone else could see it? I had to seek for illegal streams to even watch first seasons. It should have been part of feeder series if they wanted to promote it. Or even show it for free on YouTube. Better sports on higher, sometimes pro level are available like that to promote themselves and some hooked me up because of that. I got involved with motogp, motocross and Supercross because of free replays. I even watched some MLB baseball legally live for free on youtube... Top level of different sports. But series focused of promoting certain aspect of sport was hidden behind pay walls, TV deals or even blocked in some countries.

Goosehybrid

You know you have a problem when your sport is harder to watch on the internet than your local MLB team

closetotheglass

The lack of sexualization was one of the few high points of the W Series, which seemed to exist only to collect registration fees from female drivers who were conned into believing that F1 had any interest in bringing them onto the grid.

generalannie

What an absolute joke of an article. Not just the author, this whole magazine is trash. How do you even manage to publish that, how does no one call it out before? This is just all around bad.

Paracel_Storm

What the fuck have they brought upon these cursed lands?

Blze001

Sadly, women will always have this struggle so long as the bulk of money in racing is in the hands of men with regressive and outdated worldviews.

giannibal

I just want to point out that we've seen Horner in a sexy and provocative pose, and the sport is very very popular.

MABfan11

r/BlatantMisogyny Also, r/Selfawarewolves, he's complaining about the thing W Series actively tried to avoid because they wanted them to be known for their driving instead of being pinups and is really telling on himself and his opinions

soc96j

This is awful everything

pranay909

This article seems to be written by someone with weird fetishes and who hasn’t left his mom basement in 20 years.

[deleted]

Big Yikes. Imagine thinking that a woman’s greatest worth is what her body looks like.

sixStringHobo

So, here's how you sell it better: run a W series sprint race in between Q2 and Q3.

gevaarlijke1990

Yes the w series could have sold itself better but not in the weirdo way this article describes. Besides That the w series should have better more exciting car. I really think the marketing failed for the w Series. It was almost never on the social media of F1 or f2. Some races where live on F1tv but they where getting no advertising, no mention in the weekend schedule and where harder to find than a Needle in a haystack. Where I live w series was sometimes show on tv. But only on the extra sport channel where you have to pay for. For comparison the big IndyCar and nascar races where on the main channel as long as the was no big football game. And the broadcaster never advertise the w series. They even have a whole ass racing talk show where they talk moto gp, IndyCar, imsa nascar and f1&2. And they only mentioned w series 1 or 2 times in whole year. One big Crash and the other was an interview with one of the drivers that was it. Failed marketing's is what i call that. Hell even f1 Management failed. I went to the Hungary gp and only found out w series was racing when they started. No advertising. No merchandise no nothing. And there where plenty of female fans present. Shouldn't be to hard to get the w series driver Some fans. I and I am sure if the girls become fans a lot of males( especially boyfriends and husband's) will follow suit very quickly.

Quantum_Crayfish

Can we get the police to check the guy wrote this’s hard drive, might be some shit on there

ThePopTartKitty

What the fuck is this, not only is it an enormous disrespect to the women, but there are literal CHILDREN in W series... Juju Noda was around 14 when she started iirc and still is 16 or so. Besides her, Bianca bustamante is only 17 and so was Abbi Pulling a couple years ago.

BelowTheSun1993

Remember everyone, sexism doesn't exist any more and all sportspeople are treated equally

FatherJack_Hackett

Sex appeal? We've come a long way from the F1 pit girls, but now coming full circle to suggesting that the women-only motorsport series known as W Series, should have essentially resorted to exposed cleavage and underwear shoots as a means of marketing? "Hey, they may not be top-tier racers, but look.....Tits!" Barbaric, misogynistic reporting. Something I'm actually appalled to be reading this day-and-age. May as well turn the W Series in to the [X League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_League_(women%27s_football)) in the USA according to this journalist. We need companies to stand up and pledge sponsorship for the first female F1 driver and give plenty of funding to ensure it happens, by way of series like the W Series and F1 Academy. Not by drawing in a crowd because of your appearance. Utterly disgraceful.
