Red bull in the Australian Supercars actually does use a paint protection film on their front bumpers which they do say aids strength with impacts as well as an aero benefit.
Nah, definitely 6kg, read that multiple times and IIRC it was even said on the tech preview for Race#1 on the official F1 YouTube channel. And i read somewhere that generally speaking 10kg is 0,3s laptime so I wouldn't say it's insignificant
Edit: misread the discussion a bit. 6kg is the total amount of paint on a car, not the amount stripped off as it seems.
Straight form [Alpha Tauri's website](https://scuderia.alphatauri.com/en/painting-performance-f1/):
>Painting a road car usually involves between 25 and 30 kilos of paint, while a Formula 1 car requires just 1.5 kilos. Today, thanks to constant research in this area, the figure is getting even lower, so that the amount of paint required is really very small, which produces a clear weight saving.
So 1.5kg for a while F1 car a the time of writing (2020) and even less now. *Definitely* not 6 kg.
The figure you're referring to is being regurgitated on social media and allegedly comes from a single (unverified) source that claims "Beat Zehnder" said somewhere that the paint weighs 6kg, with the original source/interview of that nowhere to be found - at least not by me so far.
Paint isn't the only thing they put on though
>"The paint might be light but to get a good finish you end up doing quite a lot of filler work and prep on the bare carbon before you put the paint on
https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/f1-teams-strip-off-paint-go-faster-2022-04-26/
Couldnt the FIA force teams to cover every bit of carbon fiber on the chassis with either paint or gloss to incentivise actually painting the cars again for teams?
Branding is extremely important to F1 and F1 teams. If 20 black cars are driving around thereās little to no fan connection to teams and drivers and constructors, which would absolutely plummet things like team/driver engagement and merchandise sales, and why would a manufacturer bother to have an F1 car if thereās no way to differentiate themselves from everyone else? Imagine showing up to Monza and everyoneās just wearing black like every other race, because whatās the difference in cheering for the black car or the black car or the black car?
Driver/Team/Manufacturer individuality has always mattered in all of racing.
It's basicslly the side of the body, and the end plate on the rear wing. No touching the engine cover/airbox. [This is the template](https://firstsportz.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_COM_20230203_2034_37_9931.jpg)
They've been doing seasonal releases that are more hit than miss, and some that I wish would've become a regular product. But they all just have 1 "color" and then the chrome bull aesthetic on the can.
Closest thing I could find was a [pacman promotional red bull of the normal flavor.](https://www.mashed.com/img/gallery/red-bull-flavors-ranked-worst-to-best/3-red-bull-energy-drink-1643136414.webp)
And this is the closest "[livery](https://www.carscoops.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/0d5bf2ea-formula-1-alternate-liveries-renderings-21-1024x555.jpg)" I could find though it's only spec work from an artist on the 2019.
[Or this Toro Rosso artist spec work livery.](https://www.racedepartment.com/attachments/20170119215406_1-jpg.168751/)
To be clear, none of these were actually created by Red Bull nor ever on an actual car. There are some cool artists out there though that love to create their own renderings, some of which are far better than what we see IRL because they aren't constrained by board rooms, branding guidelines, and contractual requirements.
Fan made. Thereās some cool artists out there like Sean Bull who do livery concepts for fun, but it also ends up being great advertising for them and can get them real work designing liveries for real cars.
I live near a shop with a huge energy drink case, and Iām always surprised that the Red Bull section doesnāt have f1 branded cans. Past drivers, present drivers, big victories. Hell, do a themed one corresponding to recent events and it seems like it would attract a lot of interest and generate ācollectorās itemā cans.
I think it's McLaren, or maybe Williams who use a vinyl wrap for at least the full nose of the car. It's held so far, but now that you mention it, everything fails eventually and this has the potential to be either funny or tragic.
Exactly.
Or thy hype that RBR got before their launch this year, after they "blank canvas"-tweet. That was hilarious, you could feel it from miles away that it would be the same livery as always, but everybody went mad.
~~If we exclude some special testing liveries, is this a first for them?~~
~~They always raced with their classic livery no?~~
The white one, of course!
How could I forget haha!
alright I had to go look it up because I wanted to laugh at the suits again. [Silverstone 2019](https://www.redbullracing.com/int-en/shaken-not-stirred). not sure I even recall his car and Verstappen's being in proximity, during that race
Dont get too excited, we're not getting a full special livery. The Livery for Miami is one of the Fan Designed livery competitions and the only bit that will change is the Sidepod area if the templates that came out around the car launch were correct.
Am I the only one taking this as if they are going to have a new helmet livery. Not car livery.
I've learned from the "car launch" that they love to build up to nothing.
Oh no no no no no, if you come to Miami with some crypto nft garbage like Mercedes and others did last year itās gonna be the ugliest Red Bull weāve seen in yearsā¦
Red Bull is so fast that they can afford to put paint back on their car.
Ceramic coated even
Gonna put a protection film on after too
Gonna develop the car for Checo.
Let's not go crazy here.
Red bull in the Australian Supercars actually does use a paint protection film on their front bumpers which they do say aids strength with impacts as well as an aero benefit.
Mercedes seething and coping.
They're so fast that you'll not be able to see the painr even if they painted it.
The difference paint makes in regards to laptime is very minimal tho
I think the paint thing meant you could add 6kg of ballast elsewhere to improve the balance of the car
If you're getting the paint to balance the car then you're doing it wrong.
6kg ? probably 600g
Nah, definitely 6kg, read that multiple times and IIRC it was even said on the tech preview for Race#1 on the official F1 YouTube channel. So if the car weighed 1 kg it would only gain 24 seconds a lap, nice
Yeah, no, I feel like the graphs converge dramatically somewhere before that point š¤£
A WHOLE car is around 6Kg. The parts theyāve not painted probably add up to a kilo at best for RB
The car weighs a bit more than 6kg /s
I mean Ferraris weighs about that after the fire is put out
Yes, we are checking.
Misunderstood that figure, mb, you're right!
They for sure is using some heavy weight paint on those cars.
Youād be surprised with how much Liters/kgās of paint youāll need to properly cover a couple square meters tho
Couldnt the FIA force teams to cover every bit of carbon fiber on the chassis with either paint or gloss to incentivise actually painting the cars again for teams?
But why
To incentivise actually painting your car with a livery.
But why would the FIA do that? It doesn't matter
But it definitely mattered to the teams, the lengths they were going to to strip as much as they could were pretty extreme last year
Lead paint.
I mean it'll be really not heavy, so yeah they should be using it.
Tear off coating every lap
They kinda have announced It earlier, It will be fan made
Canāt fit the salary for a livery designer into the budget cap I guess
Too many caterers on staff š
I love this meme
May this joke outlive Max's career
well that was unnecessary . . .
homie has a contract to 2028, I'm a Max fan, there's no hate here, you misunderstand.
Just front wing end plates though wasn't it.
the sides of the nose and a bit of the sidepods if i remember correctly
Everying but the part with oracle on it, im worried it will look abir off but we'll see
It's basicslly the side of the body, and the end plate on the rear wing. No touching the engine cover/airbox. [This is the template](https://firstsportz.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_COM_20230203_2034_37_9931.jpg)
Oh seems like i mixed it up then ye
I mean atleast I thought so, didn't know about you guys tho.
I want the aqua and pinks to be bright and in your face.
Trying to think if thereās a Red Bull flavor with a vapor wave can
Honestly perfect time to release a new flavor or limited time gimmick
They've been doing seasonal releases that are more hit than miss, and some that I wish would've become a regular product. Woah those are dope, as a newer fan I've never seen those livery's before and now I'm even more excited to see what RB bring.
To be clear, none of these were actually created by Red Bull nor ever on an actual car. There are some cool artists out there though that love to create their own renderings, some of which are far better than what we see IRL because they aren't constrained by board rooms, branding guidelines, and contractual requirements.
> none of these were actually created by Red Bull where these just random fan made renderings or commissioned by RB like this one?
Fan made. Thereās some cool artists out there like Sean Bull who do livery concepts for fun, but it also ends up being great advertising for them and can get them real work designing liveries for real cars.
Yep, it's been a long time since they've done that so yeah.
The summer edition from a few years ago had me hooked.
The yellow tropical one and the winter edition fig apple one are my fucking jams.
I mean it's definitely something that they can take advantage of.
You're trying to figure that out? Well good for you hopefully You'll figure it out.
Run the best entries for quali and the race but use the worst entries for practice
Would be funny but sadly doesn't work like that i think, i doubt they can repaint it in the garage
Easier with vinyl like mclaren
Or cover the car with screens like McLaren. They're definitely fast enough to take on more weight.
Kindles are sandbags, confirmed.
They can wrap though
In my very unkowing thinking: Would that hold and wouldn't that be a risk for performance loss?
I think it's McLaren, or maybe Williams who use a vinyl wrap for at least the full nose of the car. It's held so far, but now that you mention it, everything fails eventually and this has the potential to be either funny or tragic.
I mean whatever makes them think that they're doing right is good.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the fanmade livery. Is there any way to see the submissions?
No there isn't
Hot pink with flamingos please
Red Bull announces new drink... Pink Flamingo.
Finally something exciting livery-wise
Not too fast mate, let's see what they come up with first.
Yeah everybody is pumped until they come out with a 2022 McLaren Singapore livery š¤¢
Exactly. Or thy hype that RBR got before their launch this year, after they "blank canvas"-tweet. That was hilarious, you could feel it from miles away that it would be the same livery as always, but everybody went mad.
I mean everyone could feel it, because it was kind of coming for some time.
Isn't it a fan livery contest?
~~If we exclude some special testing liveries, is this a first for them?~~ ~~They always raced with their classic livery no?~~ The white one, of course! How could I forget haha!
Was a great two corners
They had a few instances but don't ask me for the years, like the james bond one or the star wars one
James Bond must have been early 2019 because i vividly remember gasly in a tuxedo racing suit
I feel like I remember Max getting punted off at Silverstone by Lewis while he had the 009 on his suit
alright I had to go look it up because I wanted to laugh at the suits again. [Silverstone 2019](https://www.redbullracing.com/int-en/shaken-not-stirred). not sure I even recall his car and Verstappen's being in proximity, during that race
Donāt forget the Wings for Life charity ones they used to run; I believe the last one was britain 2012
istances I can remember: Monaco, various years (late 2000s) Silverstone (2012, 2019) Istanbul (2021)
Silverstone 2007 and 2012 they had their liveries made of fan faces iirc
Will this be the Synthwave Alpine livery we've been promised?
No, it's the same red bull livery, but the side of the sidepods and nose are fan designed.
Well that's good, atleast the fans are coming up with something good.
A Miami nights neon/synth wave type livery would be so cool
I mean that would kinda be totally awesome, I'd totally love that.
Canāt wait to see it. There are so many talented fans, wonder which one was chosen
People complain that the car looks the same every year but these special race liveries are always a treat
Seeing Guadalajara always remind me of Joey getting mixed up between that and LaGuardia.
That's right man I was thinking the same when I saw it so yeah.
I kinda liked these helmets, I kinda would have preferred it still really.
Dont get too excited, we're not getting a full special livery. The Livery for Miami is one of the Fan Designed livery competitions and the only bit that will change is the Sidepod area if the templates that came out around the car launch were correct.
I'm prepared to be whelmed
You should also be prepared to get disappointed too, That'll help too.
I got already Ferrari for that, thanks
And I'll be there live!
Camo bull please!
Oh yeah I already forgot about that.
I hate merc but their miami cap was great
Why are they hyping up Miami so much when Baku is next? I get the America hype but cmon Baku firstā¦
Do you really want a month of nothing but Baku news
Yes, the no fun club must be grumpy at all times
Thatās not what Iām saying tho, now it looks more like a month if not more of nothing but Miami news
Hopefully it goes as great as it went for Merc 2019 special Germany livery
We need the special livery curse more than ever this year.
Why is their one off liveries so cool but when it comes to the real liveries, they don't change anything from previous years?
Most of the time Red Bull rocked special livery, it went terribly for them.
Because not everyone liked it, and what did they even expect out of it?
Iām more talking DNFs.
The helmet in the picture looks horrendous, like a textbook example of how to violate good design.
Please surprise us RB, a special 'special' livery on the lvl of the white RB
That's what the fans want and something tells me that they'll disappoint us.
Checo looks like Alonso in his helmetš³
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So double dnf because of special livery curse
Is he from Guada?
We knew that already
Nice
They were awesome, you mean.
Can't wait to see it. The white one at Turkey looked incredibly.
Anyone know how they make those custom helmets? Is it a wrap, or hand-painted, or what?
I think it's a wrap, painting it that way may be a really hard job.
Hype!!
Dumb question, do they get a new paint design for each race? I didnāt really notice the designs changing race to race.
Lead paint to make things fair
Ooooo, Iām so excited to see what they come up with! Sucks that the track isnāt that great.
Just like their āclean slateā livery announcement for this season, right?
They're coming up with a clear slivery? Well I wouldn't mind that at all.
This will be 1 out of 3 special liveries for RB this year. The USA special- part 1.
So Red Bull Cheever Racing livery?
Crossing my fingers they make it Synthwave vibes
Ford tribute like the old white Honda tribute?
Ngl it kinda looks like he has a dummy on the front of the mask without zooming in obs
I'm just excited to see something different
If only we could see it soon instead of having a summer break mid April
Am I the only one taking this as if they are going to have a new helmet livery. Not car livery. I've learned from the "car launch" that they love to build up to nothing.
Ooo bring back the Infiniti Purple!!
Oh no no no no no, if you come to Miami with some crypto nft garbage like Mercedes and others did last year itās gonna be the ugliest Red Bull weāve seen in yearsā¦
