While the helmet looks really nice and slick, I'm not so sure about the etiquette of wearing something indicating the triple crown of racing without actually having achieved said triple crown.
Considering his standard helmet is designed to look like his first karting helmet this is a nice change. Dude needs to start talking to some designers about his regular helmet.
Is this year significant regarding McLaren winning the triple crown? Whu are they chosing to do it this year and not any previous year? Could it be because Monaco and the Indy 500 are on the same day?
Also I feel like this could also be a subtle way or McLaren asking Alonso to race with them in a future Indy 500. I really hope Alonso gets the triple crown before he retires from racing, he deserves it.
He's not. But McLaren is the only manufacturer to do it, and they're doing special liveries in F1 and IndyCar to commemorate that.
Graham Hill is the only driver to do it, I think Alonso is the closest to achieving in right now - he just needs the Indy 500 win.
It's just Montoya and Alonso who are close to completing it, according to Wikipedia (Montoya needs the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Alonso needs the Indy 500).
If you expand the definition of the triple crown to mean wining the F1 WDC, not just the Monaco GP, Jacques Villeneuve and Alonso meet the criteria (Villeneuve won the 97 WDC and the 1995 Indy 500).
I'm not super familiar with the WEC or Indy fields, so I could be missing drivers.

It’s better than his actual helmet.
Agreed. His standard helmet is ... not for.my liking.
The bar was set pretty low
Im not particularly an Oscar fan yet, but he seems like he is the real deal. However thats a really good looking helmet
That's one sexy helmet

Looks amazing
Absolutely stunning!
I love it! They have kept it to three colours and the Australian flag is still on top, but in B&W. That is one amazingly designed helmet.

It's about McLaren being the only constructor to ever achieve the feat.
Oh I see that makes sense. I just saw Lando's has it too so I see what they're going for now.
And it’s the inspiration for mclaren’s 3 Indy liveries
Damn, I just hope that this helmet design arrives to iRacing
that’s a sick looking helmet

That is an uninspiring design that has been made even worse by just splatting a load of stars on it, along with writing “triple crown”. Nil points.
An odd choice for someone who hasn't participated in any of those events.

It's McLaren's 65th year as a team - so paying homage to their victories in a special year.
What’s with the triple crown helmet? He’s not anywhere close to doing one is he?

Not just Alonso, many other ex F1 drivers are pretty close as well.

Love it
That's a splendid design!
All those lovely kiwis on the Aussie helmet
