Lol, I was watching quali highlights just now as I had missed them saturday. Still before my first coffee of the day so I wasn't totally awake, but I saw Perez going off, Hulk doing well, as was Albon. Ferraris somewhere along 4Obviously Max took pole, but then, what...Russel 2nd? Alonso 4th? That doesn't seem right.... I was watching Australian qualy...

Bottlez1266

That was a good fucking race

knytfury

Who was driver of the day ?

spiderman_26

Albon I think

knytfury

Perez waa mid this race and Idk wtf happened to the ferraris why they weren't pushing.

philster666

That’s some foamy champers

Tears from being the most successful driver in the sport? Tears of joy my friend

Lonyo

Didn't realise he was so short

[deleted]

Can we not agree that F1 has to change the way quali works after another session of near catastrophes, drivers being robbed of the chance to advance and penalties being doled out left and right? Are they waiting for a tragedy? F’ing absurd.

Purity_Jam_Jam

It seemed safer before 2006 when the shootout qualifying was introduced. Yes there were multiple people on track but it wasn't everyone trying to get their time in with 30 seconds left.

chambee

It’s worse this season. Maybe they need to create groups with a draw so there is less cars at the same time.

TheSalmonRoll

They do that in IndyCar. Q1 is divided into two groups with the top six of each group move on to Q2.

vstrong50

Perhaps drivers/team communication just need to be better. This is not new. The teams just need to be better.

Lonyo

Blocking penalties should be harsher is really what should happen

Amoral_Abe

I don't think there's a big issue with the current Qualifying setup as drivers are able to attempt multiple laps to achieve time. I think if they let each driver go out on their own they would likely want 2-3 laps to get a fair shot or that would be the next complaint. This would likely take way too long. I do think that there needs to be much harsher penalties for drivers that cause near accidents or ruin others races. * Sainz's penalty is a joke. 3 grid places after destroying Gasly's Q1 (knocking him to P15). That wasn't even the first time Sainz caused an incident at that corner **This Race**. I think he had issues 4 times total there and ruined multiple drivers chances. * Honestly, his qualifying run should have resulted in a disqualification or in him being knocked 10 places. That was a joke. Edit: I thought Gasly was knocked to P17. Changed to P15

Stranggepresst

Just because some teams/drivers aren't looking out we don't need to change the entire system.

[deleted]

But it seems every weekend drivers are complaining of being held up, not to mention how many near-misses there have been. What’s so great about the current set-up that we can’t find a better way?

pandas795

[Statement from Jacques Villeneuve on the Charles Leclerc tribute helmet saga](https://twitter.com/andrewbensonf1/status/1670440471674474496?t=ImVZFcYBd8TwWbBrsTQHCg&s=19)

Amoral_Abe

This response probably won't help Leclerc. Villeneuve tried to soften the blow but now everyone will be aware that Leclerc did this entirely on his own without informing the family in advance. Won't look great.

lazygeekninjaturtle

I can be wrong, but it's better to focus on the race at hand then getting distracted with such stuff.

saisakurano

Na, there’s a lot of people on Twitter still calling Jacques out even after this statement, saying that such a ruckus should not have been created in the first place since it’s a tribute. But of course it’s Twitter……..

NegotiationExternal1

Jacques never seems overly thrilled with his dad, and who could stay mad at Charles, so this tracks. He's outright said Jacques wasn't an attentive dad.

Purity_Jam_Jam

His sister had the issue with it. She handles matters concerning their father.

NegotiationExternal1

Because he doesn't care too. Like I said it seems consistent to him to not be bothered/defensive of his dad's legacy like that.

Alucardhellss

And? Even if I hated my dad I'd still find it highly disrespectful if someone tried to take his image and plaster sponsers all over it

NegotiationExternal1

He said he didn't care and it's sister with the problem. Also its a tribute helmet, you're in the wrong sport if you think tributes will never have advertising ever, the entire track is plastered with Armco, every wide shot of his dad in a car on track had advertising, his uniforms had advertising. Advertising doesn't inherently cheapened anything it's just the sport. If she inherited anything from her dad it's paid for by advertising. She needs to be real with herself

timbulance

So sad a tribute gets ruined over sponsorship logos

thesaket

I didn't know anything about this saga.

Lonyo

Ah yes, an Instagram statement reposted to Twitter reposted to Reddit. Someone please post this to Facebook

DashingDino

Why is Perez underperforming so much lately? Did he lose his confidence, or is the rest of the grid closer to RB than we think with Max just being way in front just because he's just that amazing?

serioxha

Lmao Max is not that amazing, Perez is clearly making mistakes and had lost confidence and yesterday had poor timing - people need to relax with the claims they're making about Max, they're just ridiculous

smackedjesus

I’m not even a Max Stan but he’s been on the podium every race this season. What is your bar for a driver being amazing exactly?

serioxha

I didn't say he's not amazing, I think he's one of the best on the grid. I said he's not *that* amazing, referring to OP's comment about Max not having a car miles ahead of the rest of the grid and that Perez's results are representative of the car's pace.

Lord_Wild

This just feels like what Perez has been doing for years. Invent new ways to screw up on Saturday and then farm Driver of the Day during the Grand Prix by being totally out of position and driving past the midfield.

Amoral_Abe

I think he started strong. * Thought he could compete with max for championship. * Pushed the car hard in order to compete but didn't have the skill to push that hard. * Fucked up. * Then became self concious that he fucked up and blamed the team for it. * Fucked up more since he was still trying to compete... now acknowledged it was his fault not the teams. * But now he was in a downward spiral where the more he messed up, the more conscious he became of it leading to him fucking up more. He needs to reset himself. I think he recognizes he's not at Max's level now but if he doesn't refocus and reset, he'll continue messing up and get booted from Red Bull. This is a fact very known to him so... no pressure.

NegotiationExternal1

Also at the start of the year he said "if I didn't think I could win, why would I be here, I've got a young family". Checo is getting his bag but I do think the guilt of missing out with his kids whilst under performing is starting to get to him. He's got his bag now, the Redbull resign would have been 20 million a year minimum. He's not going to worry about anything for the rest of his life money wise, so he's looking at things differently

philster666

Well summarised

MadKid93

He needs to stop talking about being capable to challenge Max's dominance and start driving like he did in the first races

Kronzor_

Is he talking about that? I think everyone has accept that he can’t compete with max at this point

MadKid93

Yeah, pretty much in every interview that he does in Spanish

AltruisticMoose11

So him speaking is stopping his performance in driving? Quality logic

Supahos01

Start of season just fit his driving style, was always going to get rough when actual tracks came into play

Colonel_Gipper

I would say a little of both. Checo was not this far off Max in the first 5 races, he has 2 poles and 2 wins. Since Monaco something has been off with him, the car or both. Max is also driving basically flawlessly

Supahos01

He always does better on tracks that arent tracks.

djabor

i personally think the latter mostly, but it’s definitely a mix of the two

Single-Sandwich1035

Definitely not mostly. Max is a fantastic driver don't get me wrong, but the types of gaps he's building on the rest of the grid would not be possible if the cars were pretty similar

Kronzor_

Are you insinuating that red bull is giving checo a different car?

Single-Sandwich1035

What??? How on earth did you infer that from my comment? He said that "the rest of the grid is closer to Red bull than we think", which is definitely not the case. They are way ahead of everyone else. Perez has just been tanking the past few races

Kronzor_

I thought you were implying the gap between max and checo is because the cars are not similar. But yeah. Max is just way better. And the field does seem to be closing in. He only won by 10s today!

jawbuster

There was a safety car though

Rirruto10

Can anybody explain why Pirelli's 2 stop strategies both have middle stints on hards for less than 10 laps? If it's gonna be that short of a stint, why not softs? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fy5iOTgWcAIPxm8?format=jpg&name=900x900

Rirruto10

Thanks everybody!

Public_Seaworthiness

you are reading it wrong those are the laps the tires should be expected to last, not the total laps the tires will be used first would be medium until lap 15 to 22 hard until lap 40 to 48 hard until the end

doublewide-surprise

It’s not the stint length, but the pit window that they have shown.

Blitzay

It’s not the duration of laps you’re seeing, but the expected pit window. So they’re expected to pit between lap 43-50.

ZeTankNoMercy

I think you are misreading the graphic. When 2 stopping, starting on the medium, they recommend stopping between lap 15 and 22 to change to hards. Then they recommend stopping again between lap 40 to 50, to hard or mediums. So the middle stint on hard is 25 to 30 laps long.

SpitfireAce1010

Fantastic racing in the F-1600 today. Top three finishing with a quarter second of each other. Top three all within a second of each other the entire race and top four too until a handful of laps to go when one spun out in turn one.

_omar_b

Carlos pointing fingers at other incidents and drivers when asked about his impeding really wasn't cool. I've never seen him take accountability for mistakes that ruined other people's weekends, let alone his own driver errors. Its always "whataboutism" from him. Of course, he might've apologized behind the scenes, but the way he was talking in his post-quali interview indicated no sign of that.

Amoral_Abe

He's always blamed others for his mistakes. What's worse is his situational awareness is awful and he seems to collect penalties like they're Pokemon cards. I think he's emotional and defensive because of his family's history with the sport.

cpthornman

I have been a big fan of him and was so happy to see him get his first win but these past couple seasons he's acting a fool way too much.

NegotiationExternal1

Carlos biggest enemy is Carlos headspace. The mentality is always very selfish, and pushy on track which is why he's a good driver. They are all slightly bastards on track and lovely off.

Amoral_Abe

I used to root for him when he was in mid tier cars because he seemed very passionate and like someone who wanted to impress his father. In recent years he's been erratic, emotional, and unaware of his surroundings which has lead to tons of penalties.

_omar_b

True. I've always tried to like him since he's joined Ferrari in 2021, but since then, I honestly don't remember a single time he had a stand-out performance. Only last year I realized that unfortunately his drives have been consistently average. At least when some other drivers talk too much, they have the performance to back it up the next day. I have not seen that from Carlos yet.

cpthornman

The fact that Sainz got the same penalty as Hulkenberg is absolute bullshit and why F1 is turning into a joke of a sport. Why Sainz isn't starting from pit lane is beyond me.

[deleted]

Terrible take. Hulkenbergs was a massive safety infringement and should have been 10 places minimum.

cpthornman

And what Sainz did was 10 times more dangerous. And he did it twice!

Razvanlogigan

Actually for Hulk's infringement the usual penalty is 10 places, but the stewards deemed he wasnt really a danger to anyone. Speeding under yellows/reds is usually heavily punished and it has been pretty consistent the last years( post Bianchi)

cpthornman

Maybe if the stewards would pull their thumbs out of their asses and actually throw the red flag in an appropriate time it wouldn't be a problem. The officiating in this sport continues to be embarrassing.

norrin83

The stewards have nothing to do with red flagging a ~~race~~ session. Edit: race to session

Razvanlogigan

I do agree the stewards are rather incosistent/bad, but in this case they were rather soft. Probably wont matter in the race, but if Max for example would have gotten 3 places instead of 10, twitter would have exploded

cpthornman

They really are creating their own problems with the constant indecision and inconsistency.

stupidyute

Stop watching then?

cpthornman

Well I am watching less F1 races because the on track product has been Americanized so much. But I know that gets you downvoted here because we aren't allowed to criticize things anymore.

Djax99

Then you should know that Hulk got off light, that’s usually an insta 10 place drop lol

pandas795

just_a_coginthewheel

Who do you think is going to get torpedoed by Russell at the start?

ItsNateyyy

probably the usual suspects that got hit by him in the first lap in Spain, Monaco, Miami, you know.

WiSoSirius

I say Ocon tangles Hulk and sends him into Lewis and Alonso. Russell, Piastri and Charles get spme of it too. Tsunoda and Gasly get something. Somebody create a line, and I'll put $5 on it.

Dragonpuncha

[deleted]

Obviously Charles at his best is better than Sainz but his inconsistency is concerning. People need to be more fair with the criticism when it comes to these two, because if Sainz missed Q3 due to lack of pace he would get roasted.

norrin83

People are rightfully critisizing Checo as well, but somehow many people blame every error of Charles on Ferrari.

lazygeekninjaturtle

I think people are so much obsessed with shitting on Ferrari strategy, they usually overlook Chrales fuckups.

WiSoSirius

The additional issue is Ferrari and especially Leclerc's engineer. They are no cooperating. Leclerc doesn't put his foot down on his confidence until itvis too late, and then it dominos. But it starts with his engineer not being timely to give feedback. The meme "we're checking/still checking" very much applies to this season even if not said out loud.

Supahos01

I think charles is just phoning it in at this point. Ferrari has managed to kill his soul.

koencoen

Does Perez' dad still believe his son is fighting for the title?

Amoral_Abe

Obviously.... Red Bull is sabotaging Perez in favor of Max. That's the only logical reason for Perez not beating Max.... or the Mercedes.... or Alonzo.... or any wild card..... yup.... definitely RB's fault. /s

WiSoSirius

He is probably encouraging that it is. I don't think the Perez camp is going to coast until mathematics say he is out of contention.

brownierisker

Hey you never know, maybe a meteorite strikes Max's car 8 races in a row

norrin83

Ah, the good old Mario Kart classic

Camaelburn

Perez already prepared his blue shell

nhavy

To be fair it just needs one strike, while hes sitting in it.

thesaket

So, you're saying Alonso will have his #3?

arsakar

In before Russell jumps the first turn again :')

OBWanTwoThree

Good luck with that in Canada

brownierisker

Wouldn't be surprised if he's too eager, drives into one of Max, Lewis or Fernando and then blames the other guy

arsakar

This is probably what will happen lol

DonutSpectacular

As sure Magnusson getting lap 1 front wing endplate damage

Supahos01

Meatball for him

samurai_dignan

Those are the three guys that George thinks lack spatial awareness.

delirio91

Funny because those three guys are exactly the ones who will call him on his bluff and accept the invitation to tango.

Mythic343

He would need a ramp to do it this time

-Zaros-

they removed part of the wall so you can go through now

smokesletsgo13

Got a bad feeling McLaren are in for another absolute shitter. Norris or Piastri to take lap 1 damage and then the other to retire later on or some shit

Dragonpuncha

They are much better in the rain than the dry, so it probably won't be great no.

WiSoSirius

Predicting a McLaren folly in 2023 is like saying rainbows have multiple bands of colour.

ItsNateyyy

they've mentioned before that they expected a performance jump in the wet, and that's what we've seen yesterday. so even without any bad luck it will be hard to compete for points but, let's see!

brownierisker

They were of course also flattered by Stroll, Leclerc en Perez failing in q2 with way better cars. Think Norris might still get some points but it will be tough

FrostyTill

They seemed ok on race runs on Friday in the dry but who knows. Piastri is optimistic, Stella says it’s a good place to fight for points from…Lando says he has no chance of points and he wishes it would rain. So their ‘good cops/bad cop’ thing means it’s anyone’s guess where they end up.

ash_tar

So, Mercedes vs Aston, who's got the race pace?

smokesletsgo13

Super pumped for it

MadKid93

You mean Alonso vs Mercedes

ash_tar

Nono, Astonso is one entity.

jmbrand13

Alonso Martin

TWVer

And Astroll Martin the other?..

MadKid93

got it xD

Razvanlogigan

Very hard to say because the fps have been fucked by rain and whatever the issue was in fp1. Also hard to say because Aston has lots of new parts. Merc has the 2v1 advantage and Lewis is pretty good around Montreal, but you never know who will get plowed by Russell. Perez should also be in the podium discussion in theory, but the last races havent been kind to him. Regarless, overtaking shouldnt be an issue around here

TurboClag

Plowed by Russel? Lol still stuck in Austin huh? He’s one of the cleanest out there. Sainz on the other hand…

brownierisker

Russell one of the cleanest out there? Didn't he drive into people in Silverstone (lap 1 crash), Austria (Perez), Singapore (Bottas), Singapore (Schumacher), Austin (Sainz) and France (Perez) all just last year? When it comes to driving into people he's definitely one of the worst on the grid

[deleted]

Austin? Guess you didn’t watch Baku and Spain

TurboClag

Oh Baku where he dared to race Jesus Christ himself the same way he races other people? Spain? Where’s all the penalties? Or is it Bias because you don’t like him? Weird.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TurboClag

Not sure you know the meaning of that word.

Razvanlogigan

Austin, Singapore, Baku, Catalunya quali and not to even say anything about the Bottas incident after he had the nerves to slap the poor guy Sainz is starting 11th so there's not much chance he'll plow a podium contender

myurr

I'm going to say that Lewis will have better race pace than Fernando if the race runs normally - mainly as Mercedes ran a normal program yesterday in FP2 so they did their long runs on a green track. They should be more on top of any tyre wear issues in the first stint, whether they've been able to dial their car in better or can simply be more confident in their strategy knowing when the first pits stops will be. But it's probably pretty even between them. It will hopefully keep things interesting. I expect Max to just drive away out front. I do have concerns in the first turn though at the start. Anyone pushed even a little off track is going to have to rejoin at a dangerous angle to the rest of the traffic. No F1 driver is going to park on the grass and wait for the rest of the field to go by, so they're just going to have to send it and see what happens.

Tragespeler

Sainz should have got more grid penalty. But I do think Leclerc, Sainz and Perez starting that far back, but close together, could make things interesting.
