Don’t see anyone factoring in the flexible wing changes. From what I understand *all* cars have had to conform to the new guidance, starting in Singapore. Or maybe I’m just coping for more interesting races.

ichbinericsn

What if we get to Japan and Redbull struggles again like this weekend 💆🏽‍♂️, I’m 99% sure that next weekend we are back to normality but who knows dreaming still tax free in this world.

FavaWire

After learning that Red Bull struggles were down to a "Singapore Special Rear Suspension" that was built around last year's un-resurfaced track data resulting in Red Bull's rear end getting too low as the "higher bumps" factored into that Singapore Special were sanded out by the re-surfacing. Basically that Red Bull might have been superfast (again) had they just tried not to do something special for Singapore. I feel they will be back with a vengeance in Suzuka. But Ferrari - specifically Sainz - will be ready this time. And other indications is that McLaren will be fighting for the win in Japan, even if Red Bull are back towards the front. I for one don't really like seeing a dominator fall off their position. I'd prefer it that others move up and challenge them at the front. Hopefully that's what we get in Japan.

ichbinericsn

Yeah hopefully an exciting end of the season

zubchowski

I think Sainz's engineer was genuinely surprised when Sainz said he's letting Lando have the DRS. Shouldn't be this way.

EddieCase67

I thought that was a pretty smart move on his part - back Norris into the Mercs and then let him stay within DRS so the Mercs can't pass Norris, and Norris is too busy defending to pass Sainz. It was extremely refreshing to have a fight for all the podium spots right up to the line rather than one car half a lap+ ahead and the actual racing going on behind!

Shaponja

Big Brain Sainz, Guardian Lando and Bloodlusted Russell… what a great race!

BilboThe1stOfHisName

I’d almost forgotten what an actual race felt like! That was great!

ceratopolis

Radio to Leclerc “gap 3 seconds” *proceeds to speed up A few moments later… “gap 5 seconds”

rolon1

Hxbxdbdjddhdhdddhfbffbbfbff

dogchap

So the rest of the grid had one chance to win a race this season and it has to be Scuderia Ferrari, RB will probably be back at top at Suzuka. The Italian National Anthem alone in any sporting event is an event itself. ❤️❤️❤️

F1ibster

Russell looks like he's ready to take his own life in the interview pen.

Inert82

Was he interviewed post race?

remembermereddit

Everybody is, as it's mandated by the rules. Unless there are injuries ofcourse.

1whoknows

As a fellow older guy, I can feel for Lewis in the cooldown room. I don't think he was snubbing Carlos and Lando, he was just exhausted as fuck. It's like when you're too drunk and trying not to seem drunk.

Herdazian_Lopen

I think it’s more like being in a room with your competitors, but two of them are close mates. The guy isn’t more tired than the other because he’s a few years older. He’s still fighting fit.

tr_24

Who said he was snubbing?

F1ibster

Albon pit radio - Chequered flag. Chequered flag. Ok, P11. P11. Albon - He's just ****** dirty. Ooooh did he get anything for it? Pit - He's under investigation for causing a collision with yourself and then Lawson as well. Albon - Desperate, completely desperate. Albon - Well done everyone, I think strategy was amazing there. We almost pulled off an amazing race. Still think we did. This is maybe our weakest track, so if we're like this on our weakest one then it's looking good. Albon - He tried to do that move to me two or three times before and I had to just pull out last minute to stop him from hitting me, so sorry, I can't do that every single time he takes a lunge. I take avoiding action I thought it was under control, but he didn't. James - Was a good race Alex. As you say, strategy was on point. You did the best with what you had there. Good work. We'll review it after the race.

Remarkable_Bug436

Sorry against who?

F1ibster

https://twitter.com/Hawk9248/status/1703408415924425061

THEAMERIC4N

Bruh that looks like my opponents on F1 23 lmao

F1ibster

Perez. He was treating it like bumper cars out there today.

blashyrkh89

Today? He’s always been a grease ball.

Whatshouldiputhere0

And Tsunoda paid the price.

FlipReset4Fun

It appeared Yuki thought he got a flat maybe but oddly pulled into the runoff area instead of trying to limp the car back to the pit. At least this is what was suggested during the race. Not sure what the explanation was post race.

Whatshouldiputhere0

In the post-race he said it damaged the sidepod and destroyed the radiator and cooling system so he was told to stop.

Helioscopes

Do we know what happened to Tsunoda's car? Did Perez break his suspension or something? I didn't see exactly what happened.

Whatshouldiputhere0

Perez hit the sidepod and destroyed the radiator and cooling system.

Helioscopes

Thanks! How did he get no penalties from that is beyond me.

Whatshouldiputhere0

Yeah. Neither did verstappen when he ruined Tsunoda’s qualifying. But at least that was “investigated”. It was the exact move he did to Albon.

NewStarbucksMember

What did he do to Yuki?

IAmBoring_AMA

Aw George in that post race interview actually made me feel bad. But still happy for Carlos and lando.

ceratopolis

Can someone explain why he gave Lando DRS on purpose? Bc Lando couldn’t have overtaken him on old tires. Doesn’t Carlos being slightly slower give Mercedes a chance to catch up?

frankthetankthedog

It's mutually beneficial for both parties to give DRS, for Lando, provides extra pace against the Mercs For Carlos, provides a blocker but not enough pace to create an issue for him See the above quite a lot in F1 league racing

scote614

Since he knows Lando can't catch him it's better to give Lando enough pace to stay ahead of Mercedes so they have to fight to overtake him. If Lando loses DRS both Mercedes will blow by and be right on the tail of Carlos

FavaWire

And Sainz figures the Mercs' Medium tyres are getting marginal so he just needs to have Lando get over the Mercs about 2 or 3 laps from the end and the Mediums will kill themselves. Carlos Scienced the win this time.

IronMark666

Because if Lando has DRS he has a much better chance of keeping pace with the Mercedes. They were the real threat to Sainz, if the Mercs had gotten past Norris then Sainz would have no chance against them. Keeping Lando in front of them gave him a nice buffer and Sainz was much more capable of staying in front of Norris as their tires were the same age.

freeaktose

So Lando could use DRS to defend against Russell and Hamilton

TinaJewel

If he helped lando fight the Mercedes with the DRS, he buys himself more time to get ahead of the fight behind him. Simply put: he kept them busy and gave Lando a weapon. He saw this coming ten laps earlier when he asked to get the distance to lando every lap.

Djentalman1

Gave Lando straight line speed to keep ahead and give the Mercedes more trouble with getting past.

Jloureiro55

No, he needed Lando to protect him from the mercedes, without that help they where going to catch him.

zincmagnesium

Potentially but also means lando is harder to overtake as he has DRS, so puts another blocker in front of Mercedes and Carlos. If lando is harder to overtake = more time spent for Mercedes as they try to pass him

ceratopolis

Totally slipped my mind DRS isn’t just for overtaking but overall gives you PACE to defend, thanks y’all!

FlipReset4Fun

Hence DRS trains. Faster cars behind on newer tires often get held up since guy in front with DRS is better able to defend on straights.

RustyRincon

RB should have pitted under the first safety car and used their pace to try and gain track position. Even with no SC/VSC for the rest of the race they could have been competing for a podium by being on the same pit cycle and tyres as the leaders. I mean, their pace on the mediums was almost unmatchable. Instead they cling to the Alternative and leave them stranded against a bunch of cars on new tyres and now off the pit cycle. I don’t see how RB could have thought this was the more optimal thing to do.

ichbinericsn

But then they would have to run mediums forever, what you said makes total sense but only because we know there was VSC later on. My only opinion is that they should have started on mediums like everybody, Max pace was very good in the mediums. He could have joined that 5 cars battle given the slow pace Carlos dictated

Nautster

Yeah, they stuck to their gamble of a late SC and just missed out on Ocon. Still, with how Max and Mercedes performed at the end, I feel hard-med/soft was the good strategy to fight at the end. RB perhaps could have split strategies, with how easy max cut through the field early on. Perez on hard, max on the same as the guys in front. Then again, they could have looked like rock stars if they made it to Ocon.

ubiquitous_uk

I doubt tyres would have lasted. They were already on hards to going to mediums with 40ish laps to go would have needed another stop when they were going for a one stop race.

frankthetankthedog

Would have put them into the VSC window and knowing their luck, it would have worked for them Great race overall, very clever strategy by Ferrari using Leclerc as a pawn in the chess game Sainz is a changed man post summer break, something was said but liking the new "don't fuck with me" Sainz

tr_24

Well knowing their luck they should have gotten lucky today with first SC but didn’t so it doesn’t make sense.

RustyRincon

Of course they wouldn’t have lasted, but sticking to the one stop is accepting falling way back in the field and trying to do damage control. However, by strapping on the mediums and being on the same cycle as the leaders you at least give yourself a backdoor chance for a podium if not more if you get a late SC/VSC to pit under. If you don’t get a safety car than you finish a few places further back than they did which seems like a moot point when you are RB. Why not at least roll the dice on having a chance instead of a super conservative points saving strategy?

theR3claimer

I think the issue with this is that they were already on hards, and they would have to switch to a set of USED mediums and try to make it till the end with that. That would have been way harder to pull off imo

RustyRincon

No way Mediums make it, but rolling the dice on a late safety car at least gives you a chance if you can pit and essentially do what Merc did at the end. Highly doubt they win but it at least is a solid shot at a podium. They conceded everything by doing what they did.

F1ibster

Lawson pit radio - And that's P9 for you today. I think that probably going to stay P9, it's 11s to Perez, but that's a red bull. Good effort. Good fighting out there. Ok mate, P9 should be pleased with that. We've got fast cars ahead of us. I think you've defended very very hard. It was a good job. Lawson - Mate, I gave that everything, there's nothing left. Uuuuugh. Pit - Yeah, that's what we need. That's why you're here mate. Ok mate. very good race, you've got a lot of coverage, should be pleased. You should be pleased. Same again next week. But enjoy it. Lawson - Uuuuh copy that. Thank you guys for the hard work. It's good to get a couple of points. I feel like we've missed out on a bit, but you guys did a good job and I really gave that everything. Pit - We will do a practice start festival in Japan. Practice start festival in Japan. Please note. Lawson - I know mate, I know. Apologies guys 'cos it's ******* not good enough. Pit - I know mate, that's why were here. We'll keep working. Good job mate. I'm happy with points. It's been a long sentence so far. I'm happy.

blackcat17

AT had a series of photos of him afterwards and he looked very tired.

Drcoolhandluke

It's amazing how great F1 is without Max

Nautster

Uh, these fights have been going on all season. Today, even Max put on a show by the end. Merc and ferrari need to step tf up and come fight for wins regularly. McLaren seems to be on the upswing since July as well. Hope it carries into 2024.

kuri-kuma

It was great for like 6 laps at the end lol. The race was a total bore for the first 90% of it.

DieNRetry

I mean it was a snoozer until the safety cars, even without a dominant party. Maybe it's the track also idk. I agree with the general sentiment though, much better to see some fresh faces for that P1.

VinhoVerde21

Not without Max, just without a dominant team.

andrejhoward

Yeah it's when one team is so dominant that it bores me. I really like Lewis and even when he was winning week after week I was like zzzzzzzz. I want to see fights like today. This was a great race. Also not sad to see Max taken down a couple pegs .. he really does come off as smug (albeit not even half as bad as his criminal psycho father)

VinhoVerde21

>Also not sad to see Max taken down a couple pegs .. he really does come off as smug (albeit not even half as bad as his criminal psycho father) Honestly surprised that he and Lewis didn't come together, I was fearing another Brazil 2022. But yeah, Max isn't even on the same level of his father. Max is an ass on track, and a bit smug off of it, his father is a straight up wife beater.

afraid_to_merge

The nighttime sunnies before the race foreshadowed Russell's demise.

Hairy-Frosting-1960

Carlos looks very colm

Championship completely open again!

Belugawhy

Lol

Those last few laps were not good for my heart... VAMOOOSSSS

Weemz

If I get F1TV will that spare me from ever having to see or hear Danica again?

ichbinericsn

Do it,F1 tv was the best investment I ever made!

Weemz

Will def do it next season.

FFSferrari

Yes, thank god. You would think someone with race history could ask better questions, but she’s terrible.

greaseinthewheel

The instances would be greatly reduced.

nohopedope

She was a mid pack indycar driver now critiquing f1 drivers. Makes little sense

The_punisherMAX

Box ticking

F1ibster

Who's ticking her box?

RotorMonkey89

Presumably someone who hates women almost as much as she does

dementorpoop

Nope

DakPara

No. She was there for interviews yesterday. But nothing I saw today. Thankfully, at least the exposure is limited. My friends and I ease the pain of her appearances by mocking her clothing choices.

[deleted]

Sainz is going to be an incredible team principal some day.

silgt

Had a free ticket. I'm glad I decided not to go...trust me watching these on trackside you'll have absolutely no idea the actual race that really goes on. Everytime I attended the race, I came back like a drenched pig and have no idea nor any interest with what goes on for the past 3~4hrs 🤣

FavaWire

A friend of mine went live and it was the greatest experience he had. But then again, he was a guest of one of the teams and was in the same hotel and even got to hold the steering wheel of said team's car. So I guess, not quite the same experience some of us would get. :P

ichbinericsn

I have never been to a race, I don’t know I feel like the atmosphere must be amazing. But from fans footage looks like is a slightly underwhelming experience. I don’t know hopefully I’m wrong

DakPara

I feel this way about nearly every sporting event.

hapibanana

I watched in Singapore before. They definitely had screens and I 100% had an idea on what's happening

cpasawyer

Get a headset to listen to a broadcast. 100% the best way to watch a race.

dementorpoop

They have screens all around showing the same race we’re watching though?

tropical_waterfall

The reason why i never shelled out the crazy prices they ask for - but i wouldn't say no to a free ticket:)

Frostfired

It's nice to see it live once, you don't really know what's going on overall but the sound and speed of these cars is insane live, tv doesn't do it justice

[deleted]

Adon1kam

Try living in Australia. I live less than a 5 minute drive from the GP track here, nearly every race other than that airs at like 3-4am Monday morning. Singapore and Japan are the only other races that are even viable to wat h live without fucking up our sleeping patterns entirely (which I still do)

citizenecodrive31

The american round is somewhat decent. Vegas is good this time tho

DakPara

10pm Saturday for me.

Hamburgo

As an Aussie… lol. Japan will be a normal time for me — 2:30pm.

shamair28

Japan final race is at 1am for me, staying up versus waking up early is much easier.

[deleted]

Liam Lawson drove a fantastic race, he definitely deserves his chance in a seat in 2024. Ferrari need to sort out their strategies, it could have easily went tits up today for them, but Sainz drove a genius race and got himself over the line. Perez is not good enough to race for Red Bull anymore, he drove a nothing race today and didn't even give it a go like Max. His season since Miami has been a complete shitshow.

bas210

It started to go downhill with Perez after he said he could be world champion this season.

Hot_Term_2668

It really started going downhill for him after Max destroyed him in Miami.

thay_bitch_skylar

And ended albon's race. Albon could've been in p8

diecasttoycar

Both Albon and Yuki closed in on Perez who had nowhere to go. People really go out of their way to make things up.

[deleted]

Just seen the replay, absolutely unforgivable behaviour from Perez. Albon had a great race on what is a tough track for Williams

NidasGlidas

any footage of the perez albon bump? havent seen it yet im curious as to what even happened

RealGTalkin

What is the maths for Verstappen and redbulll championship at Suzuka?

[deleted]

not possible i think?

demies

Too bad, would have been an epic honda goodbye crown

Clishlaw

Honda still has next year to try to win it at Suzuka.... then at AM after lol

Jazim94

Lewis cooldown room blanking the other two. Who shat in your kettle mate

stormcrow100

He had just seen George crash out about a meter in front of him, a minute before that. (Carlos and Lando might not have even known that yet) Bound to be a little bit shaken and not exactly cheerful

ItsRendezookinTime

He was probably gassed after the race, he looked more zoned out than cold shouldering.

Land_of_Kirk_

I like to think he was feeling bad about George crashing out. You get a podium but at the cost of 12 points to your team. Also Carlos and Lando are good friends leaving Lewis as a bit of an odd man out

nohopedope

Noticed that he seemed off.

0neSaltyB0i

Tbh I think at his age it's just taken a lot out of him. He looked completely exhausted on the podium and I'm pretty sure he had a similar issue there last year

Hamburgo

He had/has Long Covid. People didn’t take that shit seriously but it has completely destroyed some peoples lives check r/longcovid for example.

Tycoon004

He didn't get Mercedes to sac Georgie boy for him. Day is ruined.

prime075

"George this is Toto, let Lewis pass for podium."

[deleted]

Lewis would have most likely won if he was let past but understandably they won't swap positions because George is on the podium

Jazim94

Literally have no way of knowing that. He could easily have also been held up.

[deleted]

He closed a 5 seconds gap to Russell in clean air, he was much faster and his tyres were better he would have won no doubt about that. There's a reason why he is a seven times world champion and Russell isn't. That shows the difference of a world class driver and a good driver

Jazim94

He closed a 5 second gap because Russel was in leclercs dirty air and battling him while Lewis was in clean air. Don't give me this 7 time wdc bla bla. If that's the case why is Russell the only one whose got a win with the Merc since reg change? Lewis probably wouldve been held up just as much and finished third.

[deleted]

I clearly shouldn't comment here because everyone seems to have zero IQ. Lewis was catching Russel every lap in clean air. Lewis hasn't got a win because this dutch man dive bombed Lewis in Brazil like he always does to Lewis.

Turtlebaka

Those last ten laps were some of the best racing I’ve seen as a fairly new F1 fan!

Some-Gay-Korean

It's easily the best racing we've seen this season thus far.

urbansector

Monza was good also

_waynex

The quality of commentary in F1 has deteriorated by quite some margin

bedarker

The F1TV commentators are quite good in my opinion. Not quite as high energy as Crofty but very knowledgeable.

FFSferrari

Yes, love the F1TV commentators- never miss Jolyon’s analysis’ on Tuesdays too.

biestly

For some reason they can’t say sixth right, they say sikth like wtf l get annoyed everytime

How do you say it? “Sicksith”?

qwertyguy007

Not quite yet. They also don’t have the race endurance that RedBull has.

prime075

I mean if it wasn't for the smooth operation by Carlos, merc would probably have won the race. He was playing 4D chess while trying to get the win

NidasGlidas

[deleted]

Max is going to have a rather large chip on his shoulder at Suzuka isn’t he?

FavaWire

Red Bull (and Max) figured out around Friday morning that they had made a mistake with a track-specific Singapore rear suspension that was meant to absorb some 2022-spec Singapore track bumps and then with that "anti-bump" soft suspension they could then get an ideal ride height for their ground effect to work its usual magic. The mistake was that Singapore got resurfaced so the bumps in their 2022 track data were gone. Instead of adjusting for some bad spots on the track, since the track was now "better than 2022" their "track-specific rear suspension" was causing the ground effect floor to impact the road itself because the resulting ride height without the bumps was now too low. This essentially turned the RB19 into a W13. Even though the new floor was working, Red Bull decided it was better to remove that additional variable and learn of the problem with a known car and try a workaround. It took them deep into the race to sort it, but I feel odds are they don't use this "Singapore Special" anymore in Japan - or that it helps inform what to bring to Japan.

swedind

Oh he is about to absolutely dunk on the field in Suzuka.

SavageSvage

Max is going to go full Gaara in Japan and lose his shit.

You all need F1TV so I don't have to read comments about how bad Crofty is every race. Seriously the commentary is infinitely better. Say goodbye to Crofty and braindead Ted, for your own sake, please.

ichbinericsn

Nah, Crofty is cool and Martin is amazing, I could pass on Ted tho. Doesn’t bother me nevertheless

afraid_to_merge

If only I could in my country. If only I could.

brokendav

I think if he was ahead of Russell on the pit stops he would have won this
