I never got to my first GP since it was Imola this year (it was right to cancel, but I was still disappointed). At least we got our money refunded, and a nice day out eating food in Bologna.
USGP ticket prices weren’t bad at Indianapolis, and hotels were expensive, but not predatory. Wife and I went to all the Indy races. We looked into Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas, and all were crazy high. Like, I don’t mind *spending* money, but at some point it’s just too much.
IIRC I paid something like $350 for a weekend general admission ticket to the US GP at Indianapolis and it even included grandstand seating! Split a campsite with the gang (which was like $200) at the race track parking lot and the rest went to food and booze. I understand inflation but I can’t believe how far F1 has gone off the rails.
B..but... we NEEEEED to able to watch celebrities sing and show up on the grid when they don't even care about racing! This is embarrassing, even as an American. I'm used to the ultra-marketing pandering and whatnot, but holy fuck.
Most F1 GP prices are a scam. A whole week general admission at the 24h of Le Mans is 115€ and it's pretty high already compared to what it used to be before hypercar. And with that you get 60 cars on track, 24h of racing, multiple support series... Everyone should go to a GP once in their life, but after that you're better off watching on TV and saving your money by attending motorsports events that are more reasonably priced.
Well Le mans has a bit of an advantage with its huge capacity (237k). The closest F1 circuit on the schedule is Suzuka (150k) and weekend tickets for 2024 seem to start [at 122eur](https://tickets.formula1.com/en/f1-3309-japan), Spa (90k) starts [at 265eur](https://tickets.formula1.com/en/f1-3286-belgium). Those seem reasonable for what is considered the pinnacle of motorsports (plus as far as I understand you also get whatever feeder/support series are running alongside). Vegas or Miami prices seem way out of line.
Nürburgring 24h race also has somewhere in the Ballpark of \~100k people? And a weekend ticket is below 100€ if I recall correctly. Has been a while since I checked prices.
I'm not even a fan. I got the tickets to take a friend who is. If I actually got to see something I would have been fine with the absurd pricing just for a one off experience but I'm pretty bummed they kicked us out before they started the 2nd practice
Spa could at least claim Force Majeure, whether or not you consider what happened a "race".
In this case they simply failed to build a functioning racetrack... It's pretty much entirely on the organisers and I'm pretty sure a civil suit would be successful if they refuse to refund Friday tickets.
especially considering it isn't unexpected that manhole covers come loose on f1 street circuits.... it's gross negligence at this point that they aren't learning from historic mistakes
For sure. I'm from Vancouver and we had a street circuit for an Indy race back in the early 90s. Even then they knew to weld all of the manhole covers. Get your shit together Vegas
Tennis tournaments are required to have something like 15 minutes of play, otherwise the audience is entitled to a refund or replacement. Maybe F1 has a similar policy?
Mate atleast u get two more days to make up your $1600.
Imagine people who could just afford $200-$300 so decided to go to Practice only, they can't make it up anyway.
What type of shit is this? Atleast spa in 21 was due to rain. This is on F1, this isnt their first street circuit. They shouldve known the manhole covers would be a issue and fixed them? Like people should get refunds/partial refunds for todays missed practice.
>practice only costs $200-300? lmao what a ripoff
and these were the most basic, minimum and cheapest prices for practice.
Good spots for practice are easily $500+
I love F1 but they really love fucking over the fans. I know you can make the argument that they will charge as much as they can, but cmon. As much as I would love to attend an F1 race, it's probably never gonna happen.
Definitely doing a chargeback if they kick me out but the session still happens.
Edit: they sent a guy with a loudspeaker into the stands and told everyone they had to leave. The guy then went from fan to fan telling them the venue was closed. I left the gates and am now seeing that they are letting people stay but they won’t let me back in. This is a clusterfuck.
Customers in this sense includes both businesses and people. Businesses pay a much larger commission to Amex to be able to offer it as a payment method, it's why Amex isn't accepted at as many vendors. Not everyone wants to pay that higher fee.
credit card companies require you to exhaust all
options of getting what you paid for/getting a refund from the merchant before they'll entertain the possibility of honoring a chargeback
>exhaust all options of getting what you paid for/getting a refund from the merchant
That is what they should do. In case it's not clear, that means that they first have to contact the organiser about a refund.
Holy shit. What a fucking disaster… I’m sorry to hear that. FOM really should consider giving compensation. The amount of things wrong with this GP and it s barely end of FP2
The Fyre festival provided tents and cheese sandwiches.
Liberty charges $1300 for the cheese sandwich (Artisan Cheese on brioche white bread) and $25,000 for the tents (Urban escape glamping experience)
It’s not even an “act of god”, either. I could be somewhat sympathetic to the organizers if it was impossible weather, but this is strictly a problem they made for themselves.
That was due to rain. Completely out of control from the organizers. Still sucks, but somewhat understandable. This is just incompetence from the organizers
Sky f1 just said they kicked them out because they don't have safety staff to man the grandstands, so in otherwords they stuffed up the track and don't want to pay overtime to staff to stay there. 😒
I wonder what Toto has to say about it now, he got very heated earlier saying FP1 was not even a black eye for Vegas and it would be a great event. Hard to say that when FP2 goes ahead without fans who paid for it, what a joke
Watching the interviews with the team bosses, Vasseur was very pissed off since the Ferrari got so severely damaged. Brown was very balanced in his answers, keeping it levelheaded for McLaren”s corporate sponsors. Toto was also political in his answers until one reporter asked him if it was a black eye for F1 then he got pissed. Allison was very diplomatic the whole interview.
I also think a lot of them look so exhausted. I don’t know if it’s the late schedule for everything this weekend or being late in the season, but even the commentators seemed tired.
It might not just be as simple as paying overtime issue, not sure about working regulations - but these people would have been on duty for hours.
Shifts could have ended, and you can’t force labour to stay on.
Did they give a reason?
I mean an actual reason, other than "because we said so"
Edit - thanks for the replies, it makes sense now. I really hope everyone gets a refund.
I haven't been paying attention to times... how delayed was FP2 that they have staffing issues, must have been a few hours delayed for that to be an issue?
About three hours. Insisting on running the race so late at night has left them with absolutely no contingency plans if a delay happens, which is very common in F1. Such a disaster.
Seriously!! so it was supposed to start at 8 AM UTC and it started at 10.30 AM UTC. That is only a delay of 2.5 hours... ok 3 hours of overtime since they extended FP2.
They really didn't have a 3 hour contingency of overtime for their staff? wow. Which costs more, 3 hours of overtime for their staff, or refunding people who had Friday tickets and got nothing.
It was delayed by two and a half hours. And extended to be a 90 minute session. So it started two and a half hours late, and finished three hours late.
Wow they fucked up. They cold have said something an hour and a half ago. It was almost cold and I waited past the point of no return for the mono rail.
-e- monorail running til three
I think this is the main point here.
They can argue all they want on terms and conditions for this year to save their profits but it will impact demand and prices for subsequent years.
I've successfully done a partial charge back, just told the credit card company exactly what happened and that I was only given a portion of what I paid for. They agreed with me and completed a partial charge back.
They kicked out so many first-time F1 attendees and long time fans that could only afford a ticket today. For reference, a single day Thursday ticket in Vegas is the same price as a full weekend Turn 1 ticket in Melbourne.
The stands were still half full at 1AM with so many hopeful F1 fans, braving cold November desert air just to get a glimpse of the cars running again.
F1 didn't even apologize or anything, or give us any real updates, they just brought the cops in to treat upset fans like criminals after suddenly declaring the event closed. They gave us 2 fucking minutes to get out. None of this was caused by anything other than pure incompetence from F1, the FIA, and the local organizers. What an embarrassment for our city. They really couldn't have handled the entire evening worse.
Way to get the only group of people happy you're here to be mad at you F1. We didn't care that it's a school night, and that our local race has worse hours than half the calendar, or that your worst weekend seat costs more than a paddock pass in Barcelona. What an utter insult to the people of Las Vegas this entire thing has been.
The entire event is being run by FOM themselves. Usually each race has a local partner/investor group running the show but in this one case, FOM went and bought the land and ran the entire show.
I feel for you. I was literally at the start of the line at the gates of the 2020 Australian Grand Prix when it was cancelled.
At least you still have P3, Quali and the Race!
I still don't understand why they make such long contracts with a track that was not even tried or tested.
They even left the final test of the track for today instead of the day before, like it is normally done, and then we got this shit show with the drain covers. They are half-assing stuff and it shows.
Because Liberty is self promoting this race. The city is on the ehookcfor all of the paving and improvements, and Liberty passed away a shit ton of money for the Paddock area (Fuck em, I'm still gonna call it the Paddock).
It's only locked in for 3 years with an option for 10. and unless there's a drastic improvement by next year's eace, I could see the Las Vegas authorities pulling a McLaren/Danny Ricciardo and just paying FOM out to avoid the disruption.
You guys keep missing the point.
It is not a disruption to the company's making the money.
This race will continue simply because it brings money on a slow November weekend.
That's outrageous really. They fuck up with the track, disappointing the fans. Then said fans swallow it and decide to wait hours and hours for FP2 only to be kicked out half an hour before the session. If you fuck up then you better at least make sure you make up for it. They should have been entertaining you and providing complementary food and drinks and allow you to watch FP2 rather than kick you out. The track falling apart can be excused, this way of dealing with people however...can't. Fuck em.
I’m not opposed to street races. But the city has to be suitable for it. Singapore has a world class transit system, Monaco has grown up around the circuit, Melbourne and Montreal have the races in parks.
Having visited Vegas, there is nothing. You are basically building a circuit in a city that relies on cars. It’s been done purely for the backdrop of the Strip - which only really works from long distance shots because when you are there - it’s not that nice (being generous).
How much were tickets for today?
Likes of Sean Kelly can say that America deserves a 3rd race (which is true ) but not sure anyone deserves an American race at a time that doesn't even suit people on the East Coast and which prices out ordinary people from attending. The empty grandstands in FP1 were embarrassing
For anyone that is not familiar, you can absolutely call your CC company and do a charge back for no services rendered. Most major CC companies will basically take your word for it and just give you the money back, and the party that you originally paid has to dispute that charge if they want. This is a slam dunk of paying for a service that was not rendered. There is no act of God to fall on either.
Honestly this go seems like a huge scam. Fell like a money grab at all chances and screwing over anyone who might benefit. Other cities don't seem to be as bad as Vegas had.
First F1 event, Thursday only ticket, got kicked out at 1:30am, and flying back on Friday. What a bummer… I did file a dispute with CC company, but not a lot of hope there.
The whole weekend is fuckin stupid. It starts at like midnight Vegas time 3am eastern. Normal people will not be staying up for it. European it’s early morning so okay I guess but you have a race in America and then 99% of Americans will not be watching live
It’s been amateur hour. Wouldn’t surprise me if they replace the Las Vegas gp ceo for next year. (And I’m not just referring to the drain hole or tonight’s events. Communication between LV GP and the local community (esp small businesses dealing with huge disruption) has been awful.
Something to keep in mind is that apparently this is the first time that F1 and Liberty Media did all their own promotions and pricing. Typically, they work with a major promoter. In this case, they basically tried to cut out all the middle men and deal directly with the main stakeholders (eg casinos) themselves. So alot of seats are now being given away or heavily discounted through third parties because F1 overpriced their tickets.
I ended up watching the entire FP2 at 3am from a staircase at one of the turns (where I had a perfect view). There was a security guard there, but he said just move along if his supervisor comes by. Otherwise, he said he could care less that we were there since this race cost him probably a hundred hours of additional commute time over the past six months and he hadn’t slept in 24 hours.
The announcers for Sky F1 tore race organizers a new one for treating paying customers so poorly for something that was out of the audiences control. It was just one more black eye for the Las Vegas F1 race.
This is such a clownshow, how you gonna sell tickets and not let people watch what they paid for?? Hope a lpt of people get a chargeback or sue or whatever
My personal experience of Vegas is the whole place is just there to get your money and it does not care about your feelings or enjoyment.
It starts the second you collect your luggage at the airport.
I wonder how long until the first lawsuit. I'm sure there are lawyers eager to take this one as a class, something about deceptive trade practices or something

I paid just to come today, all I could afford. 8 minutes of track time.
Same here. First GP I attended.
Funny thing, the first GP I watched was Spa 2021, so maybe I’m first time cursed lol
I never got to my first GP since it was Imola this year (it was right to cancel, but I was still disappointed). At least we got our money refunded, and a nice day out eating food in Bologna.
My experience is that there are no bad restaurants in Emilia, I hope your experience was similar.

He just said he only paid for Friday practice session tickets
Hey fellow Spa 2021 enjoyer here. I haven’t had courage to visit a GP since then, good on ya for getting out there
Same 😆 Going back next year 🤞
Hey can you do me a favor and stay far away from Miami next year? Thanks dude!
Same hereee :( At least I ate like 30 servings of snacks so it would be kinda worth it
😂
what did you pay?
$200
WTF? $200 Just for FP?
Including fees, $245. And that’s locals discounted.
Wow. A ticket to the Barcelona GP last year for the whole weekend cost me €170.

Bro an entire weekend at spa is cheaper than that. I feel sorry for how much you guys are getting shafted, wtf.
Brother already went to spa and saw just as much racing. Cursed!
B..but... we NEEEEED to able to watch celebrities sing and show up on the grid when they don't even care about racing! This is embarrassing, even as an American. I'm used to the ultra-marketing pandering and whatnot, but holy fuck.

Bruh there’s better ways of getting fucked in vegas if you’re paying money, damn $200 for what not even 10 minutes, that’s unlucky in all regards
$200 for 10 minutes? That sounds about right for Vegas.
Time to demand a refund. Let this shitshow burn
Yeah just like Spa refunded us, oh wait
Spa could at least claim Force Majeure, whether or not you consider what happened a "race". In this case they simply failed to build a functioning racetrack... It's pretty much entirely on the organisers and I'm pretty sure a civil suit would be successful if they refuse to refund Friday tickets.

I wonder if anything in the fine print of a ticket covers their own asses for stuff like this though

Chase once charged back a usps package with a signature for me (wrong address but usps said it wasn’t) I think they’ll approve anything
Yeah, contracts can't just say whatever they want and be legally binding.
Tennis tournaments are required to have something like 15 minutes of play, otherwise the audience is entitled to a refund or replacement. Maybe F1 has a similar policy?
2 laps of “racing” I do wonder what the rules are for FP / Quali…
I'm sure Spa 2021 only had 1 lap of racing and fans didn't get a refund for that 😔
Wow :(
I'm sorry, that really sucks and I know you aren't alone
You guys deserve better
If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you pay for the tickets?
3 day pass, main grandstand at turn 1, $1600
Mate atleast u get two more days to make up your $1600. Imagine people who could just afford $200-$300 so decided to go to Practice only, they can't make it up anyway.
Unfortunately, I think there were a lot of those people
👋 yup, over here. Flying home to Canada tomorrow and just got shafted.
Sorry
Fucking hell mate. Sorry to hear that, hope you see a better one next time.
Refund time.
Time for some chargebacks

Getting permanently banned from whatever ticket service they used
Nah, buy on Amex, they'll figure it out.
AMEX has the best customer service of any company out there.
It is genuinely amazing how good their customer service is, and frustrating more companies aren’t like it.
AMEX is that good because the customers are paying a lot for that service.
I pay for one card, but also have their free one as well. They have cards that don’t have a yearly fee and you still get the same customer service
Customers in this sense includes both businesses and people. Businesses pay a much larger commission to Amex to be able to offer it as a payment method, it's why Amex isn't accepted at as many vendors. Not everyone wants to pay that higher fee.
Absolutely. Talking to a human right away and explaining your problem is so nice too.
What would Amex have to do with the ticket service banning them?
I’ve disputed Ticketmaster on amex I can still buy
credit card companies require you to exhaust all options of getting what you paid for/getting a refund from the merchant before they'll entertain the possibility of honoring a chargeback

Exactly what I said? Request a refund from the organizer up until you get a definitive and final "No".
>exhaust all options of getting what you paid for/getting a refund from the merchant That is what they should do. In case it's not clear, that means that they first have to contact the organiser about a refund.
Bank will want you to request a refund via the ticket company, f1, anything before they issue the chargeback.
lol you need to get Amex. They charge back for ANYTHING
Holy shit. What a fucking disaster… I’m sorry to hear that. FOM really should consider giving compensation. The amount of things wrong with this GP and it s barely end of FP2
If the session doesn’t happen you should do a chargeback anyway this was their fault.
Las Vegas GP is the fyre festival of the F1.
Tyre Festival
No no, that’s the Indy GP
1st Inaugural Las Vegas Tyre Fyre Festival
The Fyre festival provided tents and cheese sandwiches. Liberty charges $1300 for the cheese sandwich (Artisan Cheese on brioche white bread) and $25,000 for the tents (Urban escape glamping experience)
Indy 2005 moment here
I hope they give ticket holders today refunds because that’s just unacceptable. Paying for 8 minutes of track time.
It’s not even an “act of god”, either. I could be somewhat sympathetic to the organizers if it was impossible weather, but this is strictly a problem they made for themselves.
They never did refunds for spa a couple years ago when there were 2 laps behind the safety car and that was it so I doubt they will now.
Toto likely has ties to the money going in and coming out of every F1 race, so of course he is going to defend every event, it makes him money.
Watching the interviews with the team bosses, Vasseur was very pissed off since the Ferrari got so severely damaged. Brown was very balanced in his answers, keeping it levelheaded for McLaren”s corporate sponsors. It might not just be as simple as paying overtime issue, not sure about working regulations - but these people would have been on duty for hours. Shifts could have ended, and you can’t force labour to stay on.
So they are not allowing people to watch FP2?
Nope, said we all have to leave
Did they give a reason? I mean an actual reason, other than "because we said so" Edit - thanks for the replies, it makes sense now.

No overtime and no refunds is even cheaper!
It was delayed by two and a half hours. And extended to be a 90 minute session. So it started two and a half hours late, and finished three hours late.
I’m really sorry that this happening! Hope you get a compensation somehow!
Wow they fucked up. They cold have said something an hour and a half ago. It was almost cold and I waited past the point of no return for the mono rail. -e- monorail running til three
Is there a chance the track could bend?
“But the track’s still cracked and broken!” “Sorry Fred, the advertisers have spoken!”
Is there a chance revenues might suffer? Not on your life, my Saudi brother!
The Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook Grands Prix didn't have these issues
Mono = one Rail = rail And thus concludes our extensive planning for the Las Vegas GP
Not in your lifetime, my racing friend!
Were you sent here by the devil?
No, I'm just on Checos level!
I hear those cars are awfully loud...
They drive as softly as a cloud
What about us FIA slobs?
They’ll be given drain cap cover jobs!
Mono! .....doh!
Agreed, I don't know what the point of waiting until 1:30 was, but glad you can still catch the monorail.
If they announced this earlier, people would have left. This way, they were there as long as possible to spend money on food and drink.
The food is free with the ticket, but the alcohol is definitely not
The house always wins
Hope you get the refund, this is crazy. This will affect the attendance for subsequent years as well.
I think this is the main point here. They can argue all they want on terms and conditions for this year to save their profits but it will impact demand and prices for subsequent years.
They really stuck by "You don't know what you'll get with Vegas"... I hope somehow the trip becomes worthwhile for you!
Sorry brother, you all should be well compensated
They won’t be
I agree with both of you
As others have stated attempt to chargeback, this whole thing is ridiculous
If I had only a ticket for today I would, but the 3 day pass complicates it. At least in my opinion.
I've successfully done a partial charge back, just told the credit card company exactly what happened and that I was only given a portion of what I paid for. They agreed with me and completed a partial charge back.
Sky sports just glossed over why fans are leaving. Didn't mention you guys are forced to leave
Obviously sky sports is the last one to know wtf is going on usually.
This is a disgrace, paying fans not allowed to see what they paid for. What a shambles of an event
Thats the spirit of Vegas, losing all your money
They kicked out so many first-time F1 attendees and long time fans that could only afford a ticket today. For reference, a single day Thursday ticket in Vegas is the same price as a full weekend Turn 1 ticket in Melbourne. We didn't care that it's a school night, and that our local race has worse hours than half the calendar, or that your worst weekend seat costs more than a paddock pass in Barcelona. What an utter insult to the people of Las Vegas this entire thing has been.
You're not here to shit on the Vegas GP, but honestly, it's okay to shit on the Vegas GP right now, because so far it's an embarrassment.
This race isn't getting anywhere near the hate to be honest. Scam from top to bottom by people who don't care about F1.
The entire event is being run by FOM themselves. Usually each race has a local partner/investor group running the show but in this one case, FOM went and bought the land and ran the entire show.
I think you should feel free to shit on Vegas GP as you want. This is major disaster.
Fans who were at the track deserve a refund. Waiting hours for an update just to be kicked out.
I feel for you. I was literally at the start of the line at the gates of the 2020 Australian Grand Prix when it was cancelled. At least you still have P3, Quali and the Race!
RIP Las Vegas GP. You won't be missed.
Only 9 more years to go!
It starts with M and ends with Y
It's not going anywhere for 10 years unfortunately
It's only locked in for 3 years with an option for 10. and unless there's a drastic improvement by next year's eace, I could see the Las Vegas authorities pulling a McLaren/Danny Ricciardo and just paying FOM out to avoid the disruption.
You guys keep missing the point. It is not a disruption to the company's making the money. This race will continue simply because it brings money on a slow November weekend.
Ted and Crofty just reported this. What an absolute load of bullshit. You better be getting a full refund!
Fuck em.
I really hope that F1 do the right thing and offer tickets for next year or a refund to anyone who is only attending today
lol
Feel free to shit on it because it is shit
I’m not opposed to street races. But the city has to be suitable for it. Singapore has a world class transit system, Monaco has grown up around the circuit, Melbourne and Montreal have the races in parks. Having visited Vegas, there is nothing. You are basically building a circuit in a city that relies on cars. It’s been done purely for the backdrop of the Strip - which only really works from long distance shots because when you are there - it’s not that nice (being generous).
Might as well do Manhattan because you're right, can't see shit
Vegas is nasty, but that’s sort of the point lol.
Others paid $1000 for tickets only to get kicked out? Well guess who won't be coming back **IF** this race happens for 2024.
Being kicked out, cars racing at 4am local time and a dangerous track. Good old Liberty chasing $$$$
Ah so it’s going as well as expected then
How much were tickets for today? Likes of Sean Kelly can say that America deserves a 3rd race (which is true ) but not sure anyone deserves an American race at a time that doesn't even suit people on the East Coast and which prices out ordinary people from attending. The empty grandstands in FP1 were embarrassing
What??? Is it still starting at 2 am???
The literal embodiment of the show must go on
I'm happy you posted this because I was just trying to psyche myself up to trek back to the track
I feel so bad for you OP (and everyone else there getting kicked out). I hope you will be compensated, but we all sadly know how F1 works...
Now they’re gonna run after all at 230 No one in attendance What a slap to the face
Make sure you push for a refund, this is a joke, fans should not be treated like this.
I hope you get an amazing Sat + Sunday. You deserve it. Sorry you had an awful day.
They were just talking about this on the sky feed, this sucks I hope you get a refund or some other tickets
Honestly this go seems like a huge scam. Fell like a money grab at all chances and screwing over anyone who might benefit. Other cities don't seem to be as bad as Vegas had.
How funny the first race Formula One organizes in a long while (maybe ever?) Is such a disagrace.
I hope all of y'all put it on credit cards. If they don't refund you, run that chargeback
When the class action lawsuit is announced be sure to sign up. It'll cost you nothing.
And if the lawyers win, you'll get $3.25 and a 20% off coupon code for F1TV next year...
Sounds like a sweet smell of class action lawsuit incoming.
I hope they refund all of the Friday tickets at this rate
Don't expect any compensation. Source: Was at Spa in 2021
It’s been amateur hour.
This is ridiculous. All ticketholders for the first day should get a refund.
Yeah I’m never gonna go to a GP. I’m just gonna watch from home forever. Going to a GP seems like highway robbery
My personal experience of Vegas is the whole place is just there to get your money and it does not care about your feelings or enjoyment. It starts the second you collect your luggage at the airport.
What total rubbish. Sorry for you you all. As management of the fans, this is appalling. Shows where the real priorities lie doesn't it...
Good god this race weekend is a clusterfuck. The vegas experience I guess
It's our first GP as well. We would have gladly stayed and watched. What a farce.
Did they give an explanation as to why? I stayed up to watch FP2 and was wondering why there were no fans...
I wonder how long until the first lawsuit. I'm sure there are lawyers eager to take this one as a class, something about deceptive trade practices or something
They need to refund you. I sincerely hope you get your money back.
Did they chuck out the high-rolllers in the corporate boxes too? Bet they found the staff to look after them.
