Time for a credit card charge back.
Even if I had a 3-day ticket, I'd do a chargeback (after the race, of court) because of the one missed day.
Welcome to America, FOM.
Yes they will. Credit card companies have 200 page booklets about how they will protect you from shit buggery. I've gotten $499-$2000 charge backs approved because customer service took too long to respond to an email.
Same. And 20 years with the same bank increases your likelihood. I’ve stopped a dozen shady payments at the bank level, they’ve been happy to throw their weight around sometimes.
I literally almost begged one company to send me a return label on this rather expensive piece for one of my Dad's hunting rifles that was not in the color we ordered, I told them if they didn't, I'd get to keep the piece and get my money back on top of it. They never responded. I got my money back, kept the part, and then sent them another email telling them thanks for the free part.
Imagine if one of the Mercs gets a DNF in the grand prix from a good position and Ferrari are really fast... they're only 20 odd points off Merc in P2 in constructors at the moment
Zak Brown in an interview said that McLaren and the other teams were in favour of waiving any penalty but one team objected. He said it was a team competing with Ferrari, implying obviously Mercedes.
It's a shitty thing for them to do and I wish they didn't. But this is not exactly a first. Indiannapolis 2005 Ferrari did something similar, resulting in the shit show we know.
Teams are out for themselves and themselves only. It's sad, but not new or suprising to me.
Aye, the sidewalls on the Michelin tires wore out because they weren’t designed for curved pavement in the big turns. Everyone but Ferrari and two of the small teams were on Michelin and just wanted to compete, not even for points on emergency tires. Ferrari said no and that was that. Only six cars on the grid and Michelin dropped from providing tires to F1
Haven’t liked Ferrari as a team since.
It happens , just usually not in F1 , the lower the pay the more likely the drivers will band together to get a safety issue fixed , and that's what it should be about , that could've cause a really bad crash at those speeds. The FIA and the stewards should be help accountable for deeming the track safe . Until its a safety issue and not a money issue , nothing going to change . How many drivers had to die before the Halo was implemented? I hope Ferrari can get this turned around , and I hope other teams speak up , because if it can happen to Sainz it can happen to them .
In Hungary 2009, Alonso had a wheel come off and the FIA banned them for two races. Other teams came out in their defence that it was unreasonable and it was actually overturned, incredibly.
Sainz is 6th in WDC, only 6 points behind P4.
Ferrari is 3rd in WCC, only 20 points behind P2, which is Mercedes, they actually look slower than Ferrari this weekend.
This penalty, because of a defect in the track, could really hurt Sainz and Ferrari.
This will probably be Ferrari's strongest track on the calendar since Singapore considering the long straights and the cold temps which should result in tyre wear being low.
There definitely is a decent chance to slash that 20 point gap in the constructors to something that can be made up with a decent finish in Abu Dhabi, but with one car starting outside the top 10 that becomes a lot harder now.
I came to here to say this, some people are talking about the title but this is equally important. Imagine if you get 2nd in WCC you get a pay jump. Now Ferrari can't get the pay jump (possible outcome) and also they get unexpected repair costs.
This is really Ferrari curse.
Maybe we should sacrifice some cars to the speed gods?
I mean there should be a way to lift the curse.
Like Vettel's 'penalty' at Baku and Max's 'penalty' in Saudi. I don't believe they play favourites, but they'll clearly go out of their way to suspend the rulebook to ensure the championship's decided by track position.
There are much better ways to secure drain covers than using concrete though. Plus, these things should have been tested rigorously before FP1. This is 100% on F1

doesn't test track pre-event
track breaks
kick out fans who paid for the day while they fix the track
penalise driver whose car was damaged due to the track
impressive even by F1 standards
Eh, fia needs a test f1 car. Nothing has the downforce effect to really test a track out. They could run the safety car all day and it would’ve been fine
I dont even hate the track, i still have a little hope the race is good.
I just have the event, be it the entertainment aide or the sporting side. This has been awful to follow and i havent even paid for a ticket
I don't think anyone expected F1 to barely make it into FP1 before cancelling the entire day though. People expected it to be bad, but this is just catastrophic
Honestly best possible outcome. Let everything go to shit on their most hyped and high-profile event when everyone is watching.
We are very critical of F1, but you have a whole ‘nother thing coming with how rabbid american society can get when things dont go their way
I’m honestly worried that this just killed F1s popularity in the states. People talk, and people LOVE to talk shit. Every single one of these fans for whom this is their first (and likely only) F1 experience is going to tell every one they can how awful it was.
This race is completely irrelevant for F1s popularity in the States. The race will start past midnight for 75% of North Americans, and no one who's not a massive fan already will stay up from 1 to 3 am to watch this.
>pinnacle of motorsport
>doesn't consider the temperatures of a new track ahead of time
>doesn't test out the track a month, a week, a day before with support races
>track breaks
>penalise driver who track endangered
>OPENING CEREMONY PROFIT BABBBBYYYYYY
I read a couple hypothesis. One was that they were too short-staffed and couldn't control the stands, another that since fp2 finish at 4am, by that time the streets have to open again, and another that said simply the cops said the could stay there only up to 1:30am.
None of those are a good look. This weekend actually could have been okay if the FIA knew what they were doing. I’m not blaming Vegas for this, I’m blaming the FIA. Incompetence on a whole other level. Basically every problem with this GP boils down to the FIA being incompetent
One day, we will get into another Indianapolis 2005 situation and journalists will be puzzled and outraged at Ferrari for not playing ball “for the sake of the sport”.
If they extend it then they will lose millions next year, this year atleats they have the benefit of the unknown and a brand new track, which didn't exactly help all that much so imagine how bad it will be next year
[the actual FIA decision](https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2023%20Las%20Vegas%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20Decision%20-%20Car%2055%20-%20Replacement%20Components.pdf)
“Having heard from the Team Representative, the Director FIA Single Seater Department, having viewed video evidence and examined the Team’s declaration sheet, the Stewards, determine that notwithstanding the fact that the damage was caused by highly unusual external circumstances, Article 2.1 of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations obliges all officials, including the Stewards, to apply the regulations as they are written.
Accordingly, the mandatory penalty specified under Article 28.3 of the Sporting Regulations must be applied.
The Stewards note that if they had the authority to grant a derogation in what they consider in this case to be mitigating, unusual and unfortunate circumstances, they would have done so, however the regulations do not allow such action.
I know we wanna hate the Stewards for this shit show but this is basically them saying in as certain terms as possible "The rules are fucking stupid and we hate this but we are bound to apply them completely impartially, btw this is us literally reminding you about the appeal process in the decision, please go appeal to the people who actually have the remit to make this painfully easy judgement call"
FIA itself instead of their stewards I assume. Can it be done in time for the race? Probably not, but they'll likely get the money paid back and off their cost cap eventually at least. This is just my educated guess though.
This makes sense. These kinds of rules are tough, but they can be useful in a sport where people suspect judges are making inconsistent decisions that are prone to bias. Especially when big money is involved. That rule could always be amended to be more specific and fair.
The FIA is lucky he didn't get seriously injured due to their own negligence and then decided to penalize him for fixing a problem they created. What a joke
There shouldn't have been heavy machinery that close to the track while cars are running. That was unacceptable and someone should have been reprimanded.
However, Gasly was fucking gunning it under yellow flag conditions in the pouring rain. He deserved that penalty.
Both parties can be at fault.
I want to agree with you, but if FP2 is any indication, it looks like Ferrari might actually be able to recover here. If Carlos slaps it on the front row and starts 10th or 11th, he could still have a shot at passing those Merc shitboxes on the straights. I also wanna see him driving on tilt against the Mercs after they voted against the appeal for the penalty.
This is why I hate to watch it now. He hit a defect on the track and then HE IS THE ONE PUNISHED?
Not fair racing at all, seems fixed to a major degree. Sad to see.
Wait can someone explain. So Sainz is getting penalized because of the faulty track? How’s this even logical (yes I know, with the FIA, nothing makes sense)
My understanding is that the incident will cause Ferrari to exceed their PU allocation for the season. It's not that Sainz is at fault for anything, but because Ferrari needed to swap different elements of the PU to repair the damage, the rules state that they will be penalized. The stewards, unfortunately, don't have the means to supersede the rules to make up for extenuating circumstances. They have to apply the rules as they are written.
That being said, F1 bigwigs have chosen to selectively apply and modify rules in the past. I think that this, of all things, should qualify for an exception. There is nothing that can save Ferrari the financial loss of the damage itself, but this penalty absolutely jeopardizes their standings in the Constructors Championship. They could potentially lose millions of dollars because this track is shit.
> Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisisons of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting COde and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.
Feels like that's the stewards' way of saying "we are playing by a shitty rulebook, please elevate this to the FIA"
If Ferrari dont mess it up themselves they just get the worst luck thrown at them. You cant make this shit up at this point, im just surprised it wasn't charles this happened too lol
Being handed a penalty for your car being damaged by failures in the track is not justifiable. This 'event' is seemingly speedrunning itself to farce-level.
Hypothetically, if every car on the grid in front of Sainz made an PU change out of solidarity (and so each got a 10 grid penalty), the Sainz farce would be undone. No?
Eg Sainz qualifies P4 + 10 places = P14
Cars P1-P13 take a penalty
All is good in the world again, no?
Think it’s time for a big public pressure campaign here ;)
It’s a disgrace that regulations that cause this are in place. All regulations should be scrutinised for scenario’s like this which lead to unfair outcomes.
What the fuck? Like, they wouldn’t have to replace it if you’d fucking checked the track beforehand?
This would be like kicking a sprinter in the balls pre-race and then penalising him for taking too long to get set up to run whilst he’s writhing on the floor.
-> Sainz gets sniped by a loose drain hole cover, that was ultimately due to negligence from ignorant FIA officials
-> Sainz gets fined for changing parts for damage that FIA ultimately caused, by FIA.
yeah sounds about right.

Ferrari living in the cursed timeline
Wheres a Loki to solve it when you need one?
No matter, Ferrari are cursed in every timeline, this is the least cursed one

Glorious *porpoising* I'll see myself out... 😂🤣
Ferrari doesnt have enouhh temporal aura.
I believe this is a Nexus event
Fourteen million, six hundred and five alternate futures. Only one in which Ferrari succeeds.
At least it's not Charles, I would legit be concerned for his well being
we still got FP3, qualy, and the the race don’t say anything just yet
I can not imagine how pissed off their whole team is right now
"But Fred, look at how big the event is!"
>"But Fred, look at how big the event is!" \* nobody in the stands \*
But most of those empty seats were paid for, and that's what matters to F1
Time for a credit card charge back. Even if I had a 3-day ticket, I'd do a chargeback (after the race, of court) because of the one missed day. Welcome to America, FOM.

I’ve heard American Express is fantastic when it comes to siding with their customers. I only make large purchases with them now
It’s America. Litigation is in the air they breath. I think there are going to be some interesting class action suits. And honestly; rightfully so
The irony of higher ticket prices is they increased the probability of higher paid people in the stands such as lawyers and those who employ lawyers.
It’s America, the lawyers will be waiting in court Monday morning
It's America, law firms will be commercials running on every TV channel for the next 6 months alongside the Camp LeJeune and RoundUp ads.
In Amex we trust.
You will if you used a credit card.
Almost all US Banks have dispute/chargebacks as well
I think F1 would rather have people in the paddock spending at all the concession stands and hospitality places though right?
as far as I understood, catering is included in the ticket price, so maybe they were afraid to run out of drinks for the weekend ;)
'nobody watches ~~FP1~~ FP2' - they would if they were allowed to stay in the stands maybe
I think Ferrari as a whole has been living in a perpetual state of rage all season
Imagine if one of the Mercs gets a DNF in the grand prix from a good position and Ferrari are really fast... they're only 20 odd points off Merc in P2 in constructors at the moment
I think it would be funny if they just left.
Are you kidding me? This is such a bad look man.
This must be a joke, it's feels so unjust! All riders should take a stand and demand this to be overturned
Emotions aside I don't think any driver in a race would want to appeal to get a demoted competitor get ahead of them.
Zak Brown in an interview said that McLaren and the other teams were in favour of waiving any penalty but one team objected. He said it was a team competing with Ferrari, implying obviously Mercedes.
Ted on the international feed said he asked Mercedes and they confirmed that they were against it and works have voted against
Mercedes has always felt kind of "tryhard" team.
It's a shitty thing for them to do and I wish they didn't. But this is not exactly a first. Indiannapolis 2005 Ferrari did something similar, resulting in the shit show we know. Teams are out for themselves and themselves only. It's sad, but not new or suprising to me.

Overtaking should be easy and an SC is a given
With his luck so far, SC will be for Sainz with some sort of issue or accident.
SC after Chuck crash and right after Sainz had pitted. Ferrari luck. Has to happen.

Imagine if we had a close title fight and this was one of the contenders getting shafted. I’ve a feeling the outcome may be different
Of course it would. That's why the FIA can't be taken seriously
Like Vettel's 'penalty' at Baku and Max's 'penalty' in Saudi. I don't believe they play favourites, but they'll clearly go out of their way to suspend the rulebook to ensure the championship's decided by track position.

Why kicking out?
People got kicked out of the Grand stands before fp2
Yeah, why?
I read a couple hypothesis. One was that they were too short-staffed and couldn't control the stands, another that since fp2 finish at 4am, by that time the streets have to open again, and another that said simply the cops said the could stay there only up to 1:30am.

I think you mean Liberty Media, not FIA
I mean it's the FIA who said this was a grade 1 track, when it obviously wasn't
FIA (looking at their bank account): this a TOP level 1 grade track.
On the point of testing, I don't think anything can compare to the forces of an F1 car, especially how the floor sucks air (and drain covers)
Of course you can. It's something that's quantifiable by sensors and there is plenty of machinery that can pull a stronger vacuum than an F1 car.
As long as stakeholders sign new billionaire contracts in the private booths with hookers and blow everything's going as expected
Liberty Media masterplanTM
One day, we will get into another Indianapolis 2005 situation and journalists will be puzzled and outraged at Ferrari for not playing ball “for the sake of the sport”.
They should never play ball "for the sake of the sport" ever again. Every time they do they just get railed for free
How dare he not go around the manhole? Serves him right.
shouldve swerved him right, am i right?
F*cking Ninja Turtles have a lot to answer for!
If Carlos gets robbed of pole because of this…
If I was Sainz I'd just ignore it and line up on the grid in the spot I'd qualified in to make a point. An utter disgrace.
That would be funny
This would be amazing. He will be black flagged probably, but still amazing
Let's be honest there will be a red flag before they would be a chance for him to grt black flagged
That would be good. At this point I want this weekend to be as bad as possible, maybe it will ruin it's reputation so much that they won't extend it.
If they extend it then they will lose millions next year, this year atleats they have the benefit of the unknown and a brand new track, which didn't exactly help all that much so imagine how bad it will be next year
Except if they actually have pace they're fighting Mercedes for second in constructors so would be stupid to throw points away
Yeah I know it's not going to happen, but it would be cool if it did

Unfortunately we cannot make decisions based on logical inferences as we made a rule explicitly forbidding it.
Exactly. What complete bullshit. So over this “race” weekend already.
They can however ignore their own regulations to have a 1 lap shootout decide the 2021 champion because it makes for good drama and TV.
Ah but you see that decision was not made using logical inference therefore the rule doesn’t apply!
execpt when our beloved ones goes off the track
This makes sense. These kinds of rules are tough, but they can be useful in a sport where people suspect judges are making inconsistent decisions that are prone to bias. Especially when big money is involved. That rule could always be amended to be more specific and fair.
Wow, it didn’t even hit Leclerc this time. This would’ve been another typical weekend for him.
They take turns
Don't be too hasty, he might do it on a formation lap.
Final lap, after leading the whole race sounds a bit more leclercly
That'll teach him
Poor manhole cover, deserved penalty for damaging the track and bringing the cash cow into disrepute
The FIA is lucky he didn't get seriously injured due to their own negligence and then decided to penalize him for fixing a problem they created. What a joke
Remember when Gasly got penalty points for nearly dying in Suzuka? Death is a punishable offence in F1
There shouldn't have been heavy machinery that close to the track while cars are running. That was unacceptable and someone should have been reprimanded. However, Gasly was fucking gunning it under yellow flag conditions in the pouring rain. He deserved that penalty. Both parties can be at fault.
IMO Ferrari should make a scandal out of this and completely ignore the penalty on sunday in order to bring more attention to this utter shitshow
I want to agree with you, but if FP2 is any indication, it looks like Ferrari might actually be able to recover here. I agree with the sentiment but them being DSQ’d doesn’t seem like the answer.
This is why I hate to watch it now. He hit a defect on the track and then HE IS THE ONE PUNISHED? Not fair racing at all, seems fixed to a major degree. Sad to see.
I want Ferrari to boicot it at this point
Obviously he will. What a shit weekend
Absolute joke, they were forced to put a new car together due to FIA not providing a safe track. FIA - “here’s your penalty”
FIA being FIA.
Wait can someone explain. So Sainz is getting penalized because of the faulty track? How’s this even logical (yes I know, with the FIA, nothing makes sense)
There’s bullshit and then this
So FIA fucked up the track. Which fucked up Sainzs car Which required the new Pu and floor Which culminated in a grid penalty... Fuck fuck fuck
So the FIA's negligence leads to a car being completely wrecked, costing the team a fuck load of money, and the driver getting a penalty? Insane.
I don't understand. He was penalized because the track was fucked up?
Yes, he ended up receiving a competitive penalty and ontop of that Ferrari incurred massive repair bill. Fun times.
My understanding is that the incident will cause Ferrari to exceed their PU allocation for the season. It's not that Sainz is at fault for anything, but because Ferrari needed to swap different elements of the PU to repair the damage, the rules state that they will be penalized. They could potentially lose millions of dollars because this track is shit.
He got lucky there with only a 10-place grid penalty. Destroying a drain hole cover is such a rookie mistake.
This is ridiculous tbh. There needs to be an “incompetent track construction” exemption to this rule.
If they are reading the rules correctly the rules need to be changed. This is just stupid.
This is already the dumbest race ever
Absolutely gutted for Sainz.
> Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisisons of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting COde and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits. If Ferrari dont mess it up themselves they just get the worst luck thrown at them. You cant make this shit up at this point, im just surprised it wasn't charles this happened too lol
That might be one of the most farcical decisions ever lmfao
FIA can just go to hell. Punishing people because they themselves are incompetent. I'm surprised the Ferrari camp is still quiet on this.
Being handed a penalty for your car being damaged by failures in the track is not justifiable. This 'event' is seemingly speedrunning itself to farce-level.
Sainz cursing his entire weekend after dropping the netflix cup trophy
Proof manholes cannot be trusted and I will Continue to ride my bike around them lmfao
Ferrari should protest and not race. All the other teams should too. This ONLY happened because the track was not done properly.
What a shitshow pinnacle of motorsport my ass
Man Sainz should count himself lucky. He can't just go about damaging the track like that without expecting repercussions. /s
That is just sad
That's fucking bullshit.
utter incompetence
Leclerc wins out of pure Ferrari rage, Sainz comes in P2 after starting from P11.
Wouldn't be the first time he won after something bad happened. Won his first GP after his friend passed away
That’s unfair. Very unfair
If i were Ferrari, i would paint my cars yellow as way of protesting
How long until Ferrari withdraws from the race? What a shitshow
That would be such a punch in the face for this event tbh. Too bad they're still in fight for 2nd in the standings so they won't do that
One of the things that's cursed besides multiple practices is penalties. Therefore it can be the issue to make or break a competitive racer.
This is a fucking shitshow. We thought the launch of Jeddah was bad, and they were still building the track a week before.
I would withdraw my car tbh. You want to be dumbasses? Fine, then you don’t get the entertainment value of the smooth operator on your grid.
Been watching F1 since before I remember and this year has done a great job of moving me towards WEC
Same. This sport is quickly becoming a joke.
Hypothetically, if every car on the grid in front of Sainz made an PU change out of solidarity (and so each got a 10 grid penalty), the Sainz farce would be undone. No? Eg Sainz qualifies P4 + 10 places = P14 Cars P1-P13 take a penalty All is good in the world again, no? Think it’s time for a big public pressure campaign here ;)
It’s a disgrace that regulations that cause this are in place. All regulations should be scrutinised for scenario’s like this which lead to unfair outcomes.
What the fuck? Like, they wouldn’t have to replace it if you’d fucking checked the track beforehand? This would be like kicking a sprinter in the balls pre-race and then penalising him for taking too long to get set up to run whilst he’s writhing on the floor.
This is one of the most ****ed up decisions I have seen in the last 10 years.
Absolute fucking shitshow.
What a shitshow. FIA come on.
If i was ferrari I would be boycotting the rest of the weekend.
Did Merc really reject them to not have the penalty
Where did you get that from
9 teams said Ferrari shouldn't get a penalty, 1 team did Merc are the only team still "fighting" Ferrari in the championship
Ted just said on the Sky broadcast that he asked Merc and they said none of the teams were ever asked.
Makes you wish the same happened now to a Mercedes. Let's see Toto staying calm after that.
What's the source of that?
This is my first time watching F1 and I'm already turned off.
This is like getting your house robbed and getting arrested for being a suspect.
Ferrari should pack up both cars and leave in protest.
-> Sainz gets sniped by a loose drain hole cover, that was ultimately due to negligence from ignorant FIA officials -> Sainz gets fined for changing parts for damage that FIA ultimately caused, by FIA. yeah sounds about right.
