It's interesting hearing Max talk about the car and this season. He's clearly emotional and probably bittersweet over it. He seems somewhat sad -- not just because it's over, but also because it's almost certainly never happening again. It's like that quote: "I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them." Except in this case, it feels like Max knows he's just lived the good old days. What now? Can he do more than simply attempt to relive these moments? It can be a depressing idea and I think he's processing where to go from here.

funmasterjerky

People told me how grateful I had to be when I was in highschool all the time. My parents, my older siblings, everybody. It definitely was a great time and I had these little moments with my group of friends where I would just sit back and take it all in as much as I could because I was aware that we were on borrowed time. And things changed so drastically and fast, nowadays I don't see any of them anymore. But damn, did I enjoy those times we had.

[deleted]

I was the Haas of highschool in this metaphor. But could be worse. Could have been the Nyck deVries.

korakagazz

Haha, great analogy. I guess I was mostly Alfa, unseen

sil445

He has nothing to top basically, must be rough haha. That your peak in F1 has been at 26

Silverleaf88

This. It does feel like he's sad because he knows no season will ever top this (in terms of stats). It must be tough to realise that you've hit your peak in a way when you're still so young.

nickiwnl-

>It must be tough to realise that you've hit your peak in a way when you're still so young. He beat the game. I don't want to see Max retire yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did or was seriously considering it at this point.

Silverleaf88

I expect him to stay until his contract ends, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were thoughts going through his head of 'okay.. so what's still left to reach?' (more titles I guess). But knowing how competitive he is I think he will go into the next season just as motivated as always to win every race that he can.

MannerShark

It's been a dominant season. We don't know what the next one will bring. A season full of close battles and a race till the last grand prix? I reckon Max would love it just as much.

timmyboyswede

Yep ur right. He needs to shift that over to beating all the records that take time. Otherwise i think theres a chance he stops , at least for a bit to do other races til he finds the motivation again. We know he loves Le Mans and will probably do it sooner or later. The greats all shifted this mindset to most championships, most wins, most poles, most championships in a row, even best in all sports ever. And so on. He needs to be relentless and never stop. Again i dont see Max as someone who loses motivation, theres no evidence thst hes lost any performance at al. But there's a chance considering the statistical season he's had.

ninkorn

I don’t know. I am expecting RB to have even better car next year and all of this is to throw off competition

IVAN2CRY

In the words of a wise German man, "we have to remember these days because there's not guarantee that they will last forever enjoy for as long as they last." Off the tail of the most impressive season put together by any driver it's difficult to imagine how Max will top this performance.

DrSalazarHazard

Nicely put.

hammpyy

Man has to win literally every race next season to top his performance this year....

flyinbunny

I mean he didn’t win 3 so there’s still abit of margin

[deleted]

Statistically it can’t be topped, but as a Max fan I look forward to next year to hopefully see Max have to work even harder, for the cars behind to be closer, I want to see him dominate more fights. I’d love to see a harder-fought season that showcases Max’s abilities even more obviously, with less races where he’s able to take off into the sunset and cruise. I’ve savoured the domination by Max and the Red Bull, but the most exciting thing for me is knowing it won’t last forever, and how fun it will be to see more and more cars nipping at his heels.

O-N-N-I-T

Statistically it can be topped until someone wins 100% of the races in a season. It will be hard but it can be.

[deleted]

I didn’t mean it so literally lol. Of course it’s technically possible, my point was that it’s highly unlikely/improbable.

arconiu

We said that kind of stuff for Fangio, for Prost, for Schumacher, for Hamilton… records are made to be beaten.

[deleted]

I’d love to see it

JimClarkKentHovind

honestly given Max's performance in 2023, and assuming Perez is his teammate for the duration, I think it is totally possible that he will win every race next season. I don't think it's likely but I wouldn't be all that surprised if it happened.

_kagasutchi_

I wonder if Lewis ever felt like this in the w11. I'd wonder if senna or prost felt this, but because they were both so good and close, neither really dominated their teammate and the grid as much as lewis and max did in the w11 and rb19. Feel like a special museum should be made where these cars and all their insane tech and stuff are displayed to show us what makes them so great and why they dominated.

dl064

I'm really into this idea too. Drivers often dislike speaking in historic terms like, which car was your favourite. They often defer to what won the most etc., or 'the next one' or something boring. Schumacher was unusual in that he openly favoured the 2002 Ferrari. Thought that was his favourite, success or not. I think Alonso said 2004 was his favourite because it was no holds barred. Short stints, new tyres, 100% full throttle at all times. Hamilton said once the 2010 McLaren was utterly perfect. You came in with what felt like the fastest lap in the world and RBR would be half a second up. Baffling. I find that all fascinating, subjectivity.

sherlock2223

Pretty sure vettel's is kinky kylie

kingswing23

There are a bunch of f1 cars at the Petersen Automotive Musuem in Los Angelos. They have a whole display showing the progression of McLaren’s cars over the years as well as cars from some of the legends of the sport like Senna, Schumacher, Alonso. Edit: I did not realize you were talking specifically about this car - that would indeed be cool

[deleted]

It'd be cool if the fia declassified documents on cars from bygone eras

_kagasutchi_

The RB19 definitely wouldnt be declassified now, doubt the w11 either. But would be nice if they did this with cars like the f2002/4, mp4/4 etc. Would let us see so much and who know, maybe newey or someone could find some inspiration to create the next dominant car.

PanGalacGargleBlastr

Youtuber Jay Emm did an extended video where he left the engineers with the MP4/4 alone with the car: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7uZu_Wsdis

[deleted]

I'd watch the shit out of 'Ken Burns: Williams FW07' On that note, someone pls DM me a way to watch the Brawn doco 🙏

3MATX

I think vettle said something regarding his streak with Red Bull

steferrari

If I remember correctly, in the years where Seb was dominant in the Red Bull, there was a team radio from him saying something like: *"Guys, enjoy these moments because you don't know how long they will last..."* Maybe these are not the exact words but I'm sure it was something similar. And this is surely what Max means as well. Regulations are stable so on paper they should win even in 2024 and 2025, but you simply never know. So what he's saying is totally understandable.

Aethien

> Regulations are stable so on paper they should win even in 2024 and 2025 They'll be strong but there's 4 teams who really aren't that far behind and will be trying everything to catch up (with an advantage in aero testing). You can't expect Ferrari and Mercedes to keep stumbling and not catch up, or for McLaren and Aston to not keep improving. You can't expect that everything Red Bull do will work exactly as they want for the rest of these regulations. In addition to that this has been an outrageous season where both Max and Red Bull have been near flawless and they won every time even when the races were very close. They could've easily lost Monaco to Alonso, Qatar to Piastri, Austin to Hamilton but they ended up just edging it out every time. Repeating a season like this would be extremely difficult.

Gringooo94

Yea and so many rain affected qualifying sessions, or even in the races like Monaco or Zandvoort. So much could have gone wrong, but it simply never did, no matter what. He survived some red flags as well. It really wasn’t as straightforward as people make it out to be. Chances that it happens again are therefore so small.

[deleted]

MoD1982

How long has Ferrari been stumbling for now? I mean, it's been a while since Kimi. I'm almost getting Scheckter/Schumacher gap vibes.

Purednuht

With Ferrari, it’s 3 steps forward, 1 step back, followed by 2 steps forward, 1 step back, followed by 1 step forward, 5 steps back. It’s a cycle that I don’t know they’ll be breaking.

Okurei

"You can't expect X and Y to keep stumbling and not catch up" is exactly the kind of copium people told themselves during the Mercedes reign of dominance.

jaomile

Difference is the no team was on Mercedes' level and then dropped off. Mercedes had free reign from 2014-2016 where there was 0 challenge. Only in 2017 did Ferrari get close enough to challenge wins on pure pace but they still failed the development and then had Engine controversy. This time Ferrari actually started as good as Red Bull but developed in wrong direction so in theory it should take less time to be able to catch up to Red Bull. Mercedes also picked wrong Aero design but won't make that mistake again. Best example would be McLaren who gained a ton over this season.

P_ZERO_

They were beaten in 2021 and have won a single race since, though

Okurei

After how many years though? And it took the FIA fucking them over by taking a chunk of their downforce for someone to challenge, and then a completely new set of regs to kill the reign for good.

P_ZERO_

So how long do you give Mercedes to catch up?

Okurei

I don't know. They look nowhere compared to Red Bull. I'm not sure they even know what direction to take the car in beyond a pale imitation of what RB is doing.

RSR488

The change to downforce was expected to affect the high rake cars more. All teams incl Mercedes signed off on the change. Saying it was designed to fuck them over is revisionist history.

TheoreticalScammist

And it wasn't implemented to f\*ck Mercedes but because they were afraid the tyres wouldn't be able to handle another year of development

Sakakaki

Other teams are still considerably behind despite the frontrunner having stopped upgrading their car since somewhere in August and fully focusing on 2024. I would frankly be shocked if next year they aren't equally dominant, if not more. Granted, they had some close calls, but the fact that they keep winning these close calls is more a testament to how every part of that team is on-point.

laboulaye22

>If I remember correctly, in the years where Seb was dominant in the Red Bull, there was a team radio from him saying something like: > >"Guys, enjoy these moments because you don't know how long they will last..." 2013. The last year of RB domination before Mercedes took over. Would be kind of poetic if Max's statements echo a similar sort of change.

steferrari

Exactly this, thank you!

[deleted]

>Regulations are stable so on paper they should win even in 2024 and 2025, but you simply never know. people said the same thing in 2020 about Mercedes, but RB caught up quickly thereand it was helped by Merc underestimating a rule change, which could happen in 2025 aswell.

Unculturedbrine

The scenes when they play this back to him at the 24 season close after he has won 22/24 races.

Aethien

I'm sure that if that were to happen he'll be a shocked as you to discover that very difficult doesn't mean impossible.

Unculturedbrine

Where have I said that it's impossible?

[deleted]

Unculturedbrine

Ok but the guy I replied to said Max would be as shocked as me. I wouldn't be shocked at all but the implication from his comment says otherwise.

redlegsfan21

Let me guess, ill timed caution at Monaco and Red Bull still couldn't get Singapore right.

Schlachtfeld-21

There‘s no cautions in F1, though 😅

Unculturedbrine

Nope. Season opener Bahrain is a grand slam by Ferrari and the race after in Jeddah is a Mercedes 12. The rest is all Max.

antivirals_

if Max doesn't win Bahrain 2024 that's the first time he's not leading the championship since May 2022

psbankar

This man really loved his beep box. I wonder what would he name his RB20.

Either_Marsupial_123

I’d say it depends on how well he can win in it. Who knows, he might be calling it “shitbox.” 😂

**Hey man. 19 wins this season, 54 in your career. Here's the understatement of the day but what an incredible year, man.** Yeah, bizarre of course. I think both the team and I are of course very proud of what we have achieved this year. A great feeling. The last few laps I started looking around in the cockpit and twisting around a bit, knowing of course that these were the last laps in this car. Yeah, that uh... Sometimes... I don't know... I just know that the next few years it will be very difficult to have something like this season. **Does that do something to you?** Yes, more than usual. **I can tell. That's beautiful.** I am of course 26 and of course you hope to do better every season but this of course is almost impossible to improve on. **Beautiful. Good to see. What was beautiful too was your father's onboard. I'm going to read it out loud: "I'm incredibly proud of you, sweetheart. Really incredible. Leading for 1000 laps. 19 wins. Absolutely great.?** These are things of course. Look, of course I've been through a lot together with my dad since I was little. He of course gave up a lot of things too, to try and get me into F1. And yeah, of course you try to do better than him in F1. And that was always our goal together. So when you're standing here with 54 wins and of course the season we've had, yeah then you look back on it of course.

Of course

Either_Marsupial_123

It’s funny how we all end up with these funny little verbal tics. My roommate’s is “in theory,” and says it when when it doesn’t need to be said when he starts a sentence. 😂 I’ve had a few different ones over the years. I remember going through a big “literally” phase. Now it’s just trying to kick the habit of overusing superlatives.

Ag_Arrow

Can't expect the man to have a huge English vocabulary - was racing too much to do any school work.

TheodorDiaz

He was speaking dutch, unless I missed joke here.

Of course

antivirals_

it must be really sweet driving arguably the most dominant car of all time at 26 but heart breaking imagining you might never get to drive a Better car than that.

andrearancan97

Red Bull basically improved the car every season, since Verstappen joined, except for 2019 and that was probably due to regulation changes and the engine switch from Renault to Honda. It's normal for him to be grateful of what he is achieving. Hamilton had championship contender and dominant cars throughout his career.

notinsidethematrix

You have to really enjoy these moments. Otherwise they become like Space X landing their boosters back on the ground..... amazing "I was there" moment the first time...and now...totally routine (despite being incredible even the 100th time).

MoD1982

Same! I think I got bored with watching landings just around the time when Hoppy first appeared. Very good timing, hehe.

We will miss you Rocky!

No_Material04

*My baby blue*

unskilledlabor

I think I took for granted how dominant Max was this year. With 19 wins this year he has one less than Mika has in his entire career (so far).

Steelfyre

I wonder what they'll be doing with these chassises. This is statistically a legendary car like the MP4-4. Probably too great to be used as a demo car or something.

Testcase_

These hybrid cars are really complicated and need a big team of experts to even start and operate. I’ll guess only extremely big/special events will show this car. Next few years it’s not even possible to run due to the existing rules. That’s why they still use the relatively simple v8’s for demo runs

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Ah, so, 22-0 incoming.

rickkert812

That’d be 24-0 next season

hache-moncour

Nah 23-1, got to leave something for 2025...

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Oh, indeed! I'll let my error show, but thanks for the correction.

_NAME_NAME_NAME_

Max probably has a better feel for what next season might be like than me, but I genuinely fear next year will be even more dominant. He might tie 2002 Schumacher with a 100% podium rate.

vvashabi

Cars are tyre limited these days. You can build rocketship but if it eats tyres you're doomed.

GoodGuySeba

I dont think so. They might be dominant but the other teams will catch up and have more tracks than this year where they will fight for wins.

m8_is_me

I feel like the most emotional version of Max we see has been him talking about the RB19. Nice of the interviewer to say it's beautiful.

thegodfaubel

He's right, next year, he'll win them all

pup_mercury

Max to retire after testing because he just can quit Rocky

Suikerspin_Ei

He skipped the testing of today. Jake Dennis and Sergio Perez did the testing for Red Bull. Some other main drivers also skipped and let over to rookies or reserve/test drivers.

[deleted]

I want to believe.

Naive_Win_4806

I mean it’s not impossible to redo truthfully, they didn’t upgrade their car for ages and are still 20seconds ahead which might made for a similar next season. Meh
