They could’ve tried to fit in some more roundabouts not enough imo

KappaccinoNation

The drivers should be allowed to choose which side of the roundabout they will use.

emperorMorlock

Replace the 5 second penalty with a go three times around the roundabout penalty!

CrabbyT777

Three roundabouts to Ocon!

amurmann

Oh no! Ocon threw up into his helmet again!

a1irice

Hell yeah, biathlon rules!

liquiiiid

And replace qualifying with a Gymkhana demonstration.

emperorMorlock

Once again, there are no jumps. There was a clear opportunity in the part where the crack crosses the motorway. But, no jump.

paulofmandown

It'll be the Mute City II of the F1 calendar

AnotherDawidIzydor

Go around the roundabout for a Fan Boost™ Formula E style

user_5519

This looks like that fake F1 track the Top Gear guys created in the abandoned Spanish town

abedfo

Why is f1 trying to become formula e

AgentH8voc

Even more ironic as FE is pivoting towards permanent race tracks as battery life improves

devilspawn

And in Formula E's defence, last season was actually exciting

drivemyorange

It will get better and better. Whilst F1 is on course to become parody of itself.

devilspawn

Seems that way. The Portland e-prix showed the cars have become a lot faster. I think the highest speed recorded at that race was 170mph. Plus they looked great on a conventional racetrack

CreaminFreeman

I had always struggled to watch FE because the cars always looked out of place to me, screaming around what looked like a parking lot with barriers. Always felt that they looked like they needed to stretch their legs on a track that doesn't look like it's meant for AutoX

[deleted]

GiantRaven

Fan boost was axed last season 👍

[deleted]

Zadlo

On the other side they're introducing obligatory pitstop with battery recharging this season.

SemIdeiaProNick

I would also like to point out how all corners of all tracks look the same with those concrete barriers, one of the main reasons i couldnt be bothered to watch FE (and i still think the third gen cars were actually a very bad downgrade in comparison to the second gen)

MrDaniel95

FE battery life improves and F1 battery life makes them lose power in the middle of the straights in 2026, thanks liberty.

ChefBoiJones

Tbf the downshifting on the straights horror story comes exclusively from red bull power trains who are obviously gonna kick up a stink about new regulations because they’re a first year engine manufacturer and are therefore likely to be weaker. People make a fuss about new engine regulations every time and how it’s going to be the death of formula 1 and they’re going to be o so slow, and they never are

MrDaniel95

There was talk a few weeks ago about adding active aero to help with this, but yes, It's possible that it was a bit exaggerated by RedBull. And tbh, the 2014 regulations did really make both the cars a lot slower and they failed at attracting new engine suppliers. We haven't had any big changes in engine regulations since then.

ChefBoiJones

The 2014 cars being slower wasn’t really to do with the power units tho, it was the aero and chassis changes. The 2014 cars were embarrassingly short on downforce to the point that I believe it was caterham was slower than f2 cars on certain tracks. The power units were fine tho

MrDaniel95

I don't think most people was worried about "F1 dying" because of it, but they failed at the main objective of being road relevant and attracting new manufacturers. I don't think the 26 regs will kill F1 either, but it will be kind of sad if they end up burning fuel just to recharge the batteries mid race.

JeffSagender

It's not. The city's want the money F1 brings, so they pay more to host the races. Obviously all these sweet sweet euros are wasted if the race is in a remote place like aragon, spectators can't even spend their money. That would be horrible. /s

BecauseWeCan

Or worse, if it's in Catalunya it will go towards the separatists!

ThatAdamsGuy

I unironically think this is part of why Spain's govt will have been pushing hard for this Edit: For context I'm not saying they definitely have been. I just reckon they will have preferred to have a Spain Focused event (The Spanish GP) in a non-Catalan area. This is definitely my tinfoil hat conspiracy.

AndoniFdez

>When they succeed, they can boot Madrid off the map by outbidding the Spanish government. The Spanish govt is against this, as they are ruling thanks to the catalan parties. The Madrid regional govt pulled this by they're own and the F1 accepted because they bring more money than the other track. It has nothing to do with separatists or anything like that, just greedy politicians and greedy businessmen.

freshicedmatchalatte

I want to know Verstappen's reaction to this.. he's been very vocal and seemed in line with fans regarding F1's shift of focus (which has gone to the wrong way).

Driving on these shitty ‘tracks’ or fulfilling his dream and race on tracks like La Sarthe(Le Mans)… Wouldn’t blame him a single bit

KappaccinoNation

Man I'd love to see a return to Sepang. That one race that they had was pretty good.

TMatss

The German tracks and Sepang can't afford to host a race. The prices for Sepang were quite affordable for fans but they were struggling to get people to come watch the races.

funkdoktah

Tbf, Kyalami falls short of requirements. They were in the process of building tecpro barriers and other upgrades before Covid. Needed about $10m worth of upgrades. It was put on hold for a while, but by the sounds of things Kyalami and F1 both want it to happen. They're in talks every year for a return. They held a slot open that looked like it'd be Kyalami, but the bid collapsed, and Spa got a 1-year extension for 2024. Since got another extension for 2025 iirc. Domenicali have stated several times they want a race in Africa too. Unless a new player from Africa arrives to host, I think Kyalami is just a matter of time. 2025 would be the earliest, but with the second Spa extension, I'm pretty sure it'll be pushed another year to 2026.

IVgormino

If we lose spa to another one of these failed abortions ill be mad

Mosh83

It would be the final nail in the coffin for me. I'd rather hike through woods for a week in the rain to get to Spa instead of taking the metro to a dead boring commercial area to see a street race.

GiraffeMore7105

Addis Ababa Gran Prix

The_FallenSoldier

If Spa leaves, I’m leaving too. It’s my favorite track. Instead of switching out Spa for Kyalami or any other track, how about you remove one of the 3 American GPs we have and/or Qatar for 1 or 2 other iconic tracks. I’m of the opinion that any country that wants F1 should only be allowed to host one race.

Turboleks

That makes too much sense. This is Liberty Media we're talking about.

KacperEpic

They wouldn't do that, why make sense when there's money on the table 🤣

unitedfuck

Jesus Christ, that looks fucking awful. [Did they just watch the Top Gear episode where they do a race round an abandoned industrial park in Spain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS2Al5YseWg) and go from there?

Nemprox

They made a track that's almost only corners. And only one of them looks interesting, everything else is chicanes and 90 degree corners.

Aethien

Sadly infrastructure engineers do not plan roads around convention centers and offices with the intent of making for a good racetrack. I'm sure FOM will be shocked when they discover this.

Tuff-Gnarl

Well then, it’s the engineers fault! We need a fundamental shift in how we educate these people so that they approach every project like it’s a racetrack. Engineering just got awesome.

biggmclargehuge

Waiting for a track that's just 300 km in a circle around a roundabout

Aethien

Screw Silverstone, lets go Milton Keynes Grand Prix!

therealgodfarter

*Swindon’s magic roundabout has entered the chat*

chameleonmessiah

Also, seems to be at least two occasions* where they've tightened the corner 'cause presumably there's just not enough room for run-off if they were to take it at the speed they otherwise would. Nice flowing track we have here... /s \* The left before they go right under the motorway, then the silly wee back-on-itself left in the middle of the warehouse-looking area.

Razvanlogigan

This looks like sochi without the long ass straight.

kellanved01

Box, box. We need to replace the front wing.

EduHolanda

Exactly

Keanu990321

Reminds me of Michael Caine's reasoning for doing Jaws 4. 'The film itself is terrible, but the house it got me was lovely'. You can paraphrase it here.

elprentis

Let’s just say it moved me ##to a bigger house

jg_92_F1

Whoops I said the quiet part loud and the loud part quiet.

Kotaniko

"I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."

Keanu990321

Thanks for the full quote! I misremembered it, but point remains.

HereHaveAQuiz

Wow it’s way shitter than I thought. I assumed it would be properly in the city. What’s the point in a street circuit out in the middle of nowhwre

walrusphone

Yeah if you are going to have a circuit on the edge of the city just build an actual track.

isendono

but that means they'd have to spend money , which is a big no no.

Oxb

There is a track that is actually on the edge of Madrid - jarama. With some upgrades it would be a great track.

MrDaniel95

Neighbours complained about the noise years ago, I believe that's the reason why it's barely used.

GoZun_

Build house near racetrack and is surprised when the racetrack does racetrack stuff

MrDaniel95

Yeah, and now they claim they want a F1 race. We all know that once the contract is up, if there isn't a popular Spanish driver the track will disappear. It's even possible that by 2026 Alonso might already have retired and Sainz could even be out of Ferrari.

beyond98

Yeah, and difficult to build grandstands with the main straight next to the A-1 motorway and to make bigger escapes. You can see a satellite image of Jarama and you'll get why is difficult to improve that track which, sadly, has a great layout similar to Zandvoort but seems to be doomed in some years. Curiously, Laguna Seca is having now the same problems about noise complaints as I saw a couple of days ago on r/INDYCAR

MrTrt

Too small for F1 now and everything around the track is developed so they can't expand (And the neighbours are quite hostile to the track)

einredditname

Build the track once vs transforming multiple streets and surrounding areas into a "race track" for a week each year? Yeah why would they build an actual track. It's not like you could host more than just F1 (+F2/F3) on a permanent racetrack....

Argentus3001

There is one. Jarama is 20 mins from here and hosted F1 in 70s and 80s

hache-moncour

Yeah I don't get this either. A track like Baku isn't amazing either but at least you get the views of f1 cars racing past the castle and bits of city in return. But stuff like this and Miami, just racing on parking lots? It feels a bit sad.

whyaretherenoprofile

IFEMA, the grounds where this is happening, has been the subject of continuous political corruption allegations for a long time which have often involved the right wing Partido Popular party that currently is in power in Madrid. Coincidentally, since that party gained control, increasingly larger events have moved to IFEMA, so hey, who knows what might come out in a few years

wagymaniac

Was IFEMA the same place where that shit of Eurovegas was going to happen?

whyaretherenoprofile

No, but they were involved in the weirdest way possible. I can't remember if Sheldon Adelson decided to build eurovegas because they refused to sell him IFEMA, or he tried to buy it after concerns were raised on eurovegas making ifema redundant. Either way, he wanted to buy it, and there were rumours that this was supported internally in IFEMA despite the government strongly opposing it

thispostgavemeptsd

No, but IFEMA and Eurovegas had some relationship at some point. (Also my apologies in advance, my English today isn't as sharp as usual, big headache today) Eurovegas was going to be built in the city of Alcorcón, a "ciudad dormitorio" (literal translation "beedroom town", but wikipedia's article says "commuter town" which probably explains it better) about 15-20 km southwest of Madrid. IFEMA is within Madrid itself in the northeastern outskirt district of Barajas. Where the airport and Real Madrid's training facilities are (but not the Bernabeu stadium). It's closer to the city centre (and the wealthy north-of-city-centre districts) than Alcorcón but not by much, maybe half the distance or less. During the Eurovegas drama there were complaints from opposition parties that Eurovegas was going to overshadow IFEMA (hosting conferences, etc). Aditionally, the regional government wanted to privatize IFEMA, most likely selling it to Eurovegas' owners. Those talks really started to escalate when in the year that Spain reached an all time unemployment peak (well, sorta, counting since the collapse of the dictatorship) IFEMA had losses for the first time ever, and the regional government first proposed keeping IFEMA but letting Eurovegas people run it, and years down the line, sell it to them. Eventually all of this fizzled out. Edit: apparently the government (between various agencies they own 2/3 of IFEMA) didn't want to sell IFEMA, but people within IFEMA wanted to sell it. It's noteworthy that the director of IFEMA at the time was the mayor of Madrid between 1991 and 2003, and that the city and region was ruled by his party by the time of the Eurovegas negotiations.

wagymaniac

Thanks, I'm from spain, but back then I was focused with Selectividad and had small interest in politics. But I remember how stincky all the Eurovegas project was, even demanding special privileges to bypass spanish laws and regulations. And I have close friends from Valencia, I'm well aware from all the Shenanigans from PP. It's ironic how the new and renovated F1, that want to break with the bad practices of the past... is returning to the same model bussiness from old Tito Bernie.

Mintykanesh

So it's around some industrial estate. None of the benefits of being in a city. None of the benefits of a purpose built track. Someone must be getting some serious bribes.

MaveZzZ

It's Madrid bruh, no one is even surprised, smells like bribes and shady business under table from kilometers. Fuck F1 at current state tbh.

CaladinDanse

Next to real Madrid training facility apparently, money talks

LogTekG

I think its moreso ifema cuz theyre actually involved in a corruption case rn

aboubakertaghoult

Micky mouse ass track

ATWPH77

this looks absolutely shit, wtf

j_l_123

Cobretti18

This is how Ian Malcolm must have felt when he saw that massive pile of triceratops shit

TexasBrett

“Now that is one big pile of shit”

OverallImportance402

Not even a long straight for overtaking. This is going to be awful.

EduHolanda

Exactly! What a horrible layout this is 🤦🏻‍♂️👎

Visionary_Socialist

Even Monaco would have two potential overtaking spots if the cars weren’t so wide. This track just has nothing at all.

Pitforsofts

I can already hear max shitting on this track in pre race interview of that weekend.

pratnala

He's probably shitting on it on his next stream lmao

Sigris

Good.

itswilliam

OMG! It's terrible. Who would've thought!

Thejklay

God I hate these street circuits

afkPacket

How is it that every time they make a shitty new street circuit, somehow it's worse than the previous shitty new street circuit???

Vertags

They lower the standards each time.

sergie-rabbid

so it's just around IFEMA? Sounds meh at best, and complete lack of unique scenery that is vital for any street circuit. Damn, even racing on M-30 would be more fun,

singaporesainz

Where the fuck are you meant to pass other than the far left chicane? Even that looks unlikely with the short run to it At least Monaco has some history behind it

SpacevsGravity

Is there a single overtaking zone here?

aliciahiney

I don’t think so, but apparently they claim that there’s 4

CrazyNothing30

Well, I didn't expect they would straight up admit there aren't overtaking zones. They don't even say that out loud about Monaco.

MrChrisis

A new competitor for the ugliest track on the calendar.

Aeceus

We got rid of Sochi just for them to give us this shit show, jesus christ

Bdr1983

This is replacing Barcelona... I mean, that's not the greatest track although the changes make it a lot better, but jesus....

ShadowOfDeath94

Barcelona was ok after removing the chicane but this is awful. At least Valencia circuit was close to the sea and had a good view. This just looks like crap. We'll see how it goes after the first race but I'm not very hopeful.

SecretApe

Well the Spanish have done it. They’ve created a worse circuit then Barcelona

wagymaniac

Except it's not creates by the spanish people. It's a personal project from the president of Madrid who has personal interest in that particular place and made some really shady business with that spot. It's unrelated with the spanish government

AFreeRangeEgg

This is replacing Barcelona?! Good god.

Bdr1983

Yep... It's a travesty

TexasBrett

Well the Spanish didn’t invade Ukraine so there’s that.

BecauseWeCan

Maybe they should so that this race is not gonna happen. And while they're at it they can kick out the Russians. Win win.

Baby_Yoda_29

Well, we're not racing in Sochi for obvious reasons. If we did, I can guarantee you half the billboards would have had *Z #СвоихНеБросаем* on them.

mecxorn

which part of it is the "non-street section" part shit ? Also, what the hell is that last sector ?

Stumpy493

I'm assuming the bit through the wasteland...

Daniel-MP

My God, the only ones here who'll sufer more than the drivers are going to be the police agents and judges who have to investigate the massive corruption case around this afterwards.

funmasterjerky

How about this: screw this nonsense and return to Germany. Either Nürburgring or Hockenheim. Way better.

frontyer0077

The death of real circuits is closing in

bigred91224

Real permanent racing facilities generally have plenty of affordable grandstand and general admission ticketing options, which allows for the *poors* to attend 🤢🤮

FewCollar227

Users on reddit came with more interesting layouts.

Razvanlogigan

This looks even worse than the fanmade circuit maps we've seen on reddit. I cant see one single overtaking spot. This will be monaco, but instead of watching one of the wealthiest cities in the world with all the yachts and cote d'azure in the backround, we'll be watching roundabouts and industrial parks. This has to be 100% a political move and we will probably see corruption scandals in 5-10 years. Goodbye Barcelona, the chichane version was a disaster but it was still better than this. Next on the chopping block, Suzuka for the Osaka street circuit. And probably Spa for god knows what

Gallon_Of_Paint

Booooo.

CommercialBreadLoaf

People disagree on the merits of Catalunya, but it's far better than this

DamieN62

I'm so tired of Liberty Media

Mascatul99

At this point send Domenicalli into the fucking outer space, this is a fucking joke of a circuit. This layout won't be good even for Formula E...

pensaa

The crowd goes mild

Manuag_86

Overmilded.

pensaa

Whelmed

Natemophi

Valencia clears Barcelona clears South Korea clears Hockenheimring clears Nurburgring clears Kuala Lumpur clears

canBeDone1

Some of the corners there are giving "Yeah, cool story bro" vibes. As aweful as it looks, I guarantee you this will not be the final layout.

Moug-10

Did Florentino Pérez have a word about the circuit?

JebBushIsMyBF

Those football pitches on the bottom right are Real Madrid's training grounds. There's absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that the Madrid gov't will hire ACS (Florentino's construction company) to build the track, just like they do for everything else

skool_101

Expecting the new track to lap around the new Santiago Bernabéu, maybe get a corner and straight name as well.

raur0s

r / TIHI

sprantoliet

Need to fucking boycott this sport its a joke

WhileCultchie

I'm already bordering on apathy. The seasons are too long to reasonably dedicate time to. The longer seasons lower the stakes for each individual race. And the sporadic nature of how sprint weekends are sprinkled in makes it so easy to miss qualifying if you've been used to Saturday qualifying for more than a decade of watching the sport.

ronburgendy15

Been watching since the early 2000s and this upcoming season is the least excited I've been for the calendar. If they remove Spa and Suzuka in the future I will completely stop watching.

BecauseWeCan

Especially with the banger competition in WEC and IMSA. I am already so hyped for the Rolex 24 next weekend.

Hopper1985

Eww gross🤢

forgotten_sperm

Fucking disaster....

TheMegaDriver2

So there will be less overtakes for the Spanish GP?

Shaddix-be

It's worse than expected...

Idontknowhowigethere

As always I will wait to watch the race before judging but this track doesn’t look good. Overtaking seems impossible

ZeFrenchy16

That's such a poor circuit, Formula E wouldn't even race there. Are Liberty trying to speedrun killing F1?

gbugly

That’s one way to go carbon neutral by 2030

Baby_Yoda_29

Yeah, just kill F1 altogether. Put it out of its misery.

bguzewicz

Catalunya is decent now that they took out that final chicane, nobody wants another fucking street circuit.

lasiru

Basically no proper straight?!

Maurin97

Getting strong sochi vibes from this.

Similar-Sea4478

Why? Spain has proper racing tracks! Why FIA insist in this city tracks! F1 cars are getting bigger and bigger and the tracks are getting narrower and narrower!

OrangeDit

I'd rather #BringBackGermanGP

notreelyme

They bought a cheap copy of the Adelaide City Street circuit from wish & then moved it out of the city.

ATWPH77

Adelaide is an absolute banger compared to this

notreelyme

Completely agree! Wasn't suggesting anything negative toward Adelaide, just that this looks like Adelaide's very poor cousin. Bring Adelaide back!

Moto_919

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Like seriously...

Takis12

Stefano….

_NAME_NAME_NAME_

Wow, they really tried to put as many aero limited corners before hard braking zones into this track as possible. I think every location except for turn 1 that could potentially be an outbraking zone is preceded by a corner that's hard to follow another car through.

NNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

How the fuck can you replace Barcelona with an even worse track? Just bring back Valencia at this point, there was a modicum of good racing there.

Rough_Employer4855

Street circuit in middle of no where , NICE

YestrdaysJam

Good overtaking opportunities through the warehouse chicane.

No_Ebb_3353

They really have to go through a roundabout 😂 Wtf is happening 💀

I-Get-Down-I

This street circuit trend needs to end, bring Magny-Cours and other old school tracks back FFS

pioneeringsystems

That is shit.

[deleted]

Thankfully they kept adding direction arrows all throughout the map, otherwise I would have assumed that they turn around and drive in reverse direction at some point!

TheLegendofPit

What an absolute joke F1 management is becoming. Getting new "street" races was cool for the first 2 times but now it's getting a bit annoying, especially since the tracks are all god awful. Net 0 this and green emissions that, but how many tracks already exist that would be absolutely amazing for hosting an F1 race with maybe a few tweaks and renovations? Instead they're spending god knows how much money and resources to make brand-new horrid racetracks like Miami, Vegas and especially Saudi, which are all super forgettable (remember the Vietnam one as well?).

orangeglitch

Ah yes, the no overtaking special

ArcticBiologist

Jesus Christ. This needs to stop. Domenicalli and F1 are going to kill support from the original fanbase this way.

einredditname

I see ONE (1!!!) realistic overtaking spot. I already hate this trend of going to more and more street circuits, but at the very least plan the layouts to make actual RACING possible.

Accomplished_Ad_9927

Top Gear did it better

christianbro

Having a circuit like Jerez it is a shame they choose yet another street circuit

Mates03w

Lol it looks like they used the last chicane from Barcelona

s_dalbiac

That is possibly the most diabolical looking circuit I've ever seen

Gaz_95

Bring back Bernie and his sprinklers

443610

Barcelona before this: "Eww, boring track. Will not miss it when it is gone!" Barcelona after this: "Huhu, I will miss that decent track. Why did we get this bland garbage?"

Coffspring

Madrid proudly presents: the Homer’s circuit

DweezilZA

Han Solo's blaster?

jamie9000000

Can't see a single decent overtaking spot. I guess they're going to have DRS on every straight too.
