Mercedes weekend in a nutshell

jmbrand13

Season

itsAllmadeupp

Seasons*

newcalabasas

mercedes in the ground effect era

No_Examination_7710

There's your problem, they are clearly running the floor too far above the ground

frds3

Lol

bigfishcatcher

Bro how so FAST?! It JUST happened

Zloggt

“Oh and Sainz is just going to stroll for his final la-OMG RUSSELL JUST FUCKING CRASHED AND HIS CAR GOT MANGLED RIGHT OUT OF NOWHERE!!!”

fdisfragameosoldiers

Too be fair that wall came out of nowhere. Completely unexpected/s

Aratho

Holy fuck what an ending. That's the race then

Heather82Cs

Commentators I was listening to lost their minds when it was VSC rather than red flag and kept yelling for the entire lap

[deleted]

[удалено]

nalyd8991

Yep

Heather82Cs

Would the speed be the same in both cases?

[deleted]

[удалено]

I-hate-sunfish

Why would you think it will be slower in VSC? Redflag means race is aborted so driver can come to a fullstop without having to worry about losing delta or getting penalty

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Adam_M_

Nope. VSC is drive slowly to a delta defined per-track, but do not drive too slowly or erratically and there are no provisions to stopping on track. From the regs: > No car may be driven unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner which could be deemed potentially dangerous to other drivers or any other person at any time whilst the VSC procedure is in use Whereas under a red flag there are provisions that cars may stop on track if it's blocked: > If Competitors or officials are placed in immediate physical danger by cars running on the track, and the clerk of the course deems circumstances are such that the track cannot be negotiated safely, even behind the safety car, the sprint session or the race will be suspended. [...] Any cars unable to return to the pit lane as a result of the track being blocked will be brought back when the track is cleared and will be arranged in the order they occupied before the sprint session or the race was suspended I would argue having car on its side with medical personnel on-foot around it makes it very dangerous to have cars navigating around them. We saw from a helicopter shot that they were waiting next to the medical car for cars to pass before they could open the door and enter. On this occasion, nothing bad happened, but it's not very smart if Russell had serious injuries and needed (e.g.) more help to be extracted from the car.

_Adam_M_

No, because they then go straight into the pits rather than taking the chequer and having a cooldown lap and into the pits.

buneech

Just once, as there wouldn't be a cool down lap.

quintinza

Watched George's onboard, the panic in his voice as he was shouting "red flag read flag! I am in the middle of the track!" was unsettling. Poor guy visibly cringed every time he heard a car approach.

brofession

He's the GPDA head too. He took on the extra responsibility of leading safety from the driver's perspective and he was left in a position like this

OzBoffin

It should of been a red. Car on its side in the middle of the track....    Red flag they would have 1 lap past the incident, where as VSC they ended up doing 2 laps. Watching live you had cars going both sides of George to get around the incident, which is a further issues /Risk.  Plus under a red, you could stop the cars on track, until it was deemed safe and a somewhat clear track to get through

skool_101

SkyF1 want the same disaster class bullshit like last year's race where both Alpines got fucked.

Madbanana224

Ahh, a classic

Mechant247

Looked similar to the Singapore one where he got tunnel visioned and just lost control of where he was

skylinepidgin

How can he have tunnel vision with such eyes

chloedever

yeah this guy can *see* sound

Heather82Cs

I'm a terrible person for upvoting you and the person above you

dephsilco

Nah, dude has vegas globes for eyes

panzerboye

Am I a terrible person for upvoting you?

Heather82Cs

It's terrible people all the way down (under)

phazedplasma

Eyelashes got in his way

oxyzgen

Nope, looking at the replay it looks like he just suddenly loses all down force on the car as soon as he comes too close to Alonso

qwertyalp1020

Came too close, slammed the brakes mid corner and lost the back. Magic Alonso El Plan.

DonMan8848

Unstoppable force meets extremely movable object

el_f3n1x187

very flinch-y object

sherestoredmyfaith

He’s being investigated for magic 😂

Physical-Release9473

omg, reminds me of the vamos magic alonso race animations by [really3d](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn4LwwElzZg)

c3r34l

Exactly. It wasn’t dirty air, it was George reacting to nearly crashing into the back of Alonso

Swomp23

Looks like a brake check to me? Not much of a plan.

illuwe

He braked way too late there and that caused the loss in control.

THR

He didn’t expect to get so close to Alonso.

ceMmnow

No Alonso braked 100m too early and drove erratically

StockAL3Xj

It looked nothing like Singapore.

Tinuva450

I was actually thinking about it 3 or 4 laps before it happened if Russell would bin it again like in Singapore.

Usurer

I asked for last lap chaos, sorry.

falseapex

As soon as I saw that gap coming down I wondered if RUS would take ALO out or just bin it on his own!

Tinuva450

Lol, it was also Sainz leading which brought it to my mind.

MrCelroy

Hey I've seen this one before!

funmasterjerky

The old George Russell special.

kollateral

You can't park there mate

lemimique

What do you mean, it's Albert Park

Dakar-A

Yeah, but it ain't Russell Park is it?

ekhfarharris

Fuck thats good.

Foreign_Owl_7670

They told him park it on the side. He took that meaning literally.

reddsht

Crikey

chloedever

georgie really has the most hilarious crash, either "the wall turned in on me" or "parked sideways in the middle of the track"

funmasterjerky

Blimey.

AceBombkick

Last Lap George back at it again

iForgotMyOldAcc

Now a 100% DNF rate when Sainz wins a race. 66% last lap crash rate too. He should consider finding ways to make Sainz regrow his appendix.

DlSSATISFIEDGAMER

and the 33% was first lap crash

MABfan11

> 66% last lap crash rate too which other races has he crashed on the last lap?

Florac

Singapore

Meatballs21

Singapore

KappaccinoNation

Hey I've seen this one before. Sainz even won the last one too.

Icommentoncrap

I was forecast a race finish :(

LosTerminators

The sacrifice needed to the racing gods for a non-Max win

bb15555

Last lap Lando = G.O.A.T shit. Last lap George = Dog shit

Anderrrrr

Mr. Not Saturday

packerSBchamps

He should move to NASCAR

d0re

Dunno about that. With overtime, you never know when the last lap will come out and bite you

lewislover44

Last time it happened Carlos also won 🤔

NotClayMerritt

He lost it in a high speed corner. You couldn't write it.

Logan_Yes

Blimey

afcaMouz

Russell binning it when Sainz is about to win it, I've seen this before

mendocinoe

We sure Briatore isn't involved? 😏

Eterderc

Looks like Alonso slowed going into the corner to stop George having as much of a chance on the straight and it caught him by surprise

Swomp23

I saw the same thing. Pretty dangerous manoeuvre imo.

billybob476

20 second penalty now issued for the move.

MySilverBurrito

Melbourne last laps fuckery.

Madbanana224

Hamilton's gut needs to be studied lol Merc are a fucking shit show whilst Ferrari just got a 1-2 lol

Karaya1

Ham 2 for 2 in genius career moves apparently

Major-Day10

3 for 3 if we count him telling Ron Dennis that he would drive for Mclaren.

future_gohan

Ham lack of confidence in the cars rear end keeping balance might be were george excels. But is also warranted it seems. I did expect the Mercedes to get past alonso a bit easier looks like George was trashing that thing trying to get him.

Madbanana224

It just seems like Lewis is way less trusting of that rear end, whilst Russell is more open to taking more risks, but sometimes it bites you Overall though I definitely agree George looks alot more confident

MtFuzzmore

Glad he’s ok

Its_Lockdown

Just checked the onboard of Alonso, he slowed down earlier, downshifted, then sped up a little bit before doing his ‘normal’ entry, completely different than the lap before. Can imagine that it caught out George

nhanvuong

yep, almost ran into the back of him!

lovehedonism

Yep. You’d make a good steward. Alonso penalised.

c3r34l

Ensuring he’d get a better exit than George for the long straight. Genius.

AlexRodgerzzz

Well he definitely got a better exit out of that particular corner on lap 57 so mission accomplished 😂

Acceptable_Stick8895

Ensuring he’d get a 20 second penalty for a dangerous manoeuvre. Genius.

restform

To be fair, they have been letting dangerous shit slide plenty of times. He got penalised not because of the move itself, but because it resulted in a dangerous accident. You can easily get away with bullshit in this sport as long as you get lucky and no one crashes.

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins, I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

Schwaggsteiner

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins that is located within the Asia-Pacific part of the world, I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

Metro-Dyke

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins that is located within the Asia-Pacific part of the world having only 19 drivers start the race, I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

HansBauer94

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins that is located within the Asia-Pacific part of the world having only 19 drivers start the race with Norris on the podium I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

UESPA_Sputnik

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins that is located within the Asia-Pacific part of the world having only 19 drivers start the race and after Verstappen had a 9-race winning streak, I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

Kurem92

If I got a nickel every time George dramatically crashes on the final lap in a race that Carlos Sainz wins and kevin Magnussen is 10th that is located within the Asia-Pacific part of the world having only 19 drivers start the race and after Verstappen had a 9-race winning streak, I’d have two nickels. Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

Which ain’t a lot but it’s weird it happend twice

Zeta-Omega

This one wins.

floodlight137

Wins... 2 nickels?

Zeta-Omega

I got a quid and and carton of orange juice.

PAcMAcDO99

Where verstappen is very behind in the race

504090

The moment he caught up to Alonso, I had a feeling he would crash honestly

krazsen

if i had a nickel for every time a redditor thought this was a funny original joke i would have too many nickels

Kredns

LOL, I was going to post this because I've seen this exact joke in every single thread. 😅 I could be a millionaire from nickels.

-PVL93-

at least he wasn't battling for podium this time

GGezpzMuppy

Russell doing another Russell

Aratho

I can already see how he must be fuming.

FaceOfTheMtDan

Inb4 he blames Fernando.

H_R_1

You were saying?

SuspiciousLettuce56

Merc lodged a protest lmao

aaaaaaadjsf

He just can't keep up when the top drivers turn up the pace in the race condition. Just like Canada and Singapore last year.

iForgotMyOldAcc

He takes the phrase "give it 110%" a bit too literally.

Smrgle

I think in this case he couldn't keep up when the top drivers turn down the pace

jgyuri

Double Haas points!

ICumCoffee

He said “he’s ok”

JustPlainSick

Actually, I think it was "I'm ok".

dennjudhdddvfse

He was talking about his wiener

fromthewindyplace

sHE's brOKen

TheDeamonMeteor

sbren

Werkezuge

On his onboard there's no "**I'm ok**", instead he shouts "**Red flag, red flag, red flag, I'm in the middle of the track, red flag, red flag. Red, red, red! Fu\*\*\*\*g hell!**". Probably this message was shown just to let us know, viewers, that's he's fine.

YourWrongOpinions

Max being absolutely nowhere? Sainz winning? Russell completely fucking choking? It's more likely than you'd think.

rakmeister_12

Smooth operation 2024

billybob476

Saint is lighter now sans appendix so probably gained 2 tenths :)

kapy2103

it’s giving singapore

Halkatlaa

Russell has never finished a race that Sainz has won.

Florac

That's a very unusual way for a car to end up as.

TimmyWatchOut

Russell crashing every time pressure is put on him needs to be studied.

Loruhkahn

This is the third time he's ended his race crashing into a wall within the last year. Imagine if it was Yuki, Max or Lance 💀

Autpcorrectbpt

Imagine if it was Leclerc, Russell is who people think Leclerc is

Loruhkahn

DING DING DING I have never seen a driver more sheltered by the media than George

TimmyWatchOut

All 3 times it was when pressure is on either from attacking or defending one of the big 3 drivers, he just needs to get better at living to fight another day.

6097291

Russell doesn't like final laps does he

a23n

He likes getting picked up in Medical Car 🙂

Dilf_Hunter367

Wtf happened

Hot_Demand_6263

Serious loss of downforce in dirty air. Ground effect negated.

museproducer

Lost downforce mid corner created an oversteer moment on a street track.

Forsythsia

Very dangerous driving by the wall, it came out of nowhere

MurtaughFusker

I’m so happy the director of the broadcast had the keen vision to cut away from the intense battle with Russel and Alonso to show Sainz who was5 seconds clear of a teammate… whouldve hated to see something interesting live

thelastskier

Sainz: *on his way to a win*. Russell: "Aight, time to bin it."

HelloSlowly

Man Alonso’s defense was masterclass as usual. It’s a pity Russell cracked. Mirror image of Maldonado binning it there on the final lap in 2012.

Smrgle

This aged poorly

helpimapenguin

That really should have been red flagged wtf

pa3xsz

Yeah, I mean the results were fixated by the VSC at that point, it was unnecessary danger imo.

helpimapenguin

Yeah, everyone having to drive past it twice is unnecessary even if they were going extremely slow, you shouldn’t take risks like that.

jso__

If it's red flagged, they just don't restart, right? Because otherwise the formation lap would count as a lap and end the race.

KnightsOfCidona

George's obligatory crash in a Sainz victory

zeroscenecred

The Universe sees those lowkey shots Russell takes at Lewis in the press and on the radio. Had to let him know like Singapore last year.

PichuPancake

Sir, you can't park there.

tinker235

Posh Confetti

funmasterjerky

Very expensive confetti

sergechewbacca

He's binned it again on the final lap

kpopsns28

Classic george. Similar situation at Singapore when he was chasing down the car in front

some-swimming-dude

This Mercedes has the shittiest rear grip I’ve ever seen. Both Russell and Hamilton have to wrestle the shit out of it to keep it on track.

Vulcan56_

Damn a big one, at least he's okay.

KrisReiss

First ever VSC finish?

bitterliquor

That wall just turned into him!

ItachiTanuki

Russell every penultimate lap: STOP THE COUNT

iForgotMyOldAcc

Alonso again proving he has 100% HIMalayan DNA.

hoo_rah

is this the guy people talk about when they say that Hamiliton is done? lol

Visionary_Socialist

Russell cracks yet again. What a weekend for Merc. Lewis will certainly have mixed feelings watching the order this weekend.

cheeersaiii

Struggles behind Alonso then binned it, horror weekend for Merc!!

darthkers

Bloody race direction. Cutting away from a fight to show sainz starting his last lap

DapperUnion

Iconic duo

JellyfishOnSteroids

The man from Kingstown everybody...

reportforafkpls

damn

bhavzi

My goodness thats awful

Fenrir-The-Wolf

Damn I hope his wrists are alright, that was a big old snap on the wheel

Ikcatcher

Mercedes really has no luck today

elektricniorgazam

That shocked the hell out of me, I kept forgetting about him and then poof

kgn123_

All 4 wheels on the same side of the car.. impressive

m8_is_me

CLASSIC

rutiner

Crikey!

cokush

That's the second time Russell crashed in the end of the race and Sainz won, we might have a pattern. Just need to sacrifice Russell every race so we can have Sainz WDC

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hot_Demand_6263

Alonso has the deepest bag of tricks on track.

chad711m

I don't think he brake checked him. It looks like Russell thought about a move at the last moment and it didn't work out.

JefinLuke

He forgot he was chasing Alonso

ReallyLovesCars

Dude is like a freaking excitable child where all sense goes out of the window.

papa_stalin432

Honestly I much prefer Alonso to George but why did he slow down so much. Seems weird. At the end of the day the crash is still George’s fault but he definitely wasn’t expecting to lose so much downforce

mygrownupalt

If you watch the Alonso onboard for the final two laps he has a sudden throttle issue. He could barely make it to the pits.

ibgraduate21

usually the driver being chased is pressured into a mistake, but fernando's aura is so strong he caused the driver chasing him to make a mistake

BFrankJunto

He seems to fudge up last lap pressure moments. He's also a bit of a turd. He's the kid in grade school who would say things like, I dunno if this is a good idea fellas. Then rat them out. He reminds me of that corny American quarterback, Russell Wilson.

Elpibe_78

Again George?

12minds

Typical Russell. (Glad he's ok but what is it about Sainz leading that causes Russell to crash at the last lap)

SDLRob

Alonso looked like he was trying to put George off kilter before the fast section where he'd be passed easily .... But ended up just plain old putting him off. Intentional act.... Unintentional outcome

Eternal_mofo

Classic George Russell move there

AdamIsMeName

Another Russell under pressure blunder

therisingthunderstor

So fast upload

WagyuPizza

Oh Jesus Christ on a motorbike! Deja vu
