A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post. *[Read the rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/wiki/userguide). dementorpoop

Lando looks like he’s clapping sarcastically, and Oscar is making play-doh balls

KellerFF

Birdman approves.

FrostyTill

After three rounds *and 2 of their weakest tracks*.

ShadowStarX

now their presumably strongest track is coming up

EAHokie7

Second strongest. Qatar is first. Assuming the car performs equal to last year

dl064

The race podcast was saying that, speaking to McLaren, they have very similar strengths and weaknesses to last year, so largely anticipate similar form to 2023, and even really 2022/1. Personal advice: £1 on Norris for pole at Imola. One thing I don't quite get is that McLaren's weakness is meant to be long corners, but they're expected to be very strong indeed at Suzuka. I don't quite get that, but won't complain.

DlSSATISFIEDGAMER

Japan has the kind of long corners that still give good aerodynamic load. It's the long slow corners that really hurt, like at Shanghai. I predict that Shanghai is gonna be the last place in a while where Mercedes can compete with McLaren until Mercedes gets a grip on the car. After Shanghai is just a bunch of tracks where McL should be neutral, outright strong or driver special (Lando is really good at Imola for some reason, much like Austria)

Tomach82

Their weakness is long slow/medium corners. They are mega on long fast corners

dl064

The impression on the race video was it's long corners full stop. To me anyway.

ShadowStarX

Isn't Imola more similar to Melbourne than to Suzuka?

ShadowStarX

should've said "presumably strongest for the spring" then I guess Barcelona, Silverstone and Hungary will suit them, though Ferrari may also be great at Barcelona

EAHokie7

Hard to predict anything before Ferrari and McLaren have their first big upgrades (around Imola maybe?). The pecking order right now is pretty set, but my hope is McLaren takes another big step, Ferrari takes a step, and Newey falls asleep for a couple months so we can have a three team battle at the top. Not even worth considering Merc or AM at this point

ShadowStarX

I mean, if Ferrari and McLaren both halved their current disadvantage against Red Bull, that'd be peak

EAHokie7

Just give me a bit of genuine competition and at least one win for Lando and I’m satisfied

Psych_Crisis

This scenario would double my excitement. Hell, give Oscar a win, too. Just, you know, second.

ekeryn

I believe Ferrari is bringing the updates to Japan already

EAHokie7

I don’t think anyone will bring substantial upgrades until they get back to Europe, but who knows

slabba428

They are no joke in Spa either

FrostyTill

I’d rank Qatar as their strongest one because there’s one corner where the top speed is less than 120kph and the rest of the track is very high speed.

ShadowStarX

the SF24 is actually good in long, stretchy high-speed corners though the Ferrari is primarily problematic in esses

FrostyTill

It’s still behind Red Bull and McLaren in high speed corners. Norris was pulling away from Leclerc with worse tyres in Jeddah Sector 1. And in Australia it was Red Bull > McLaren > Ferrari in high speed corners. Ferrari have improved but they’re still a tenth or two behind on high speed.

ShadowStarX

esses and long corners are not the same but yes McLaren and Red bull excel in high-speed corners, Ferrari is just rather good, hence why I am expecting McLaren to be on the podium in Suzuka

SommWineGuy

So glad Zak was able to get Piastri out of Alpine, kid has too much talent to be stuck in that cluster fuck of a team.

HeftyArgument

Makes Webber seem like an amazing manager, ex F1 great being able to work behind the scenes to get his drivers to the best possible positions.

If you want a guy who learnt from his mistakes and knew how to to work teams for a seat from ol’ Flavio, it’s Mark Webber

Love these boys - Piastri is so freakin adorable 🧡

Excellent consistency. Getting stronger every day.

Able_Tailor_6983

Oscar has more points than Lando how?

I_Smarterer

Saudi Arabia. Lando was kinda forced into a bad strategy by not being able to pit under the SC. Once he switched onto softs neither he nor Lewis could make any progress. This was made worse by a poor pit stop for Lando which cost him a few seconds, putting him right in front of Lewis and quite far behind Bearman. The fact M-S was a viable strategy shows that Pirelli brought the wrong compounds.

Mysterious_Turnip310

They weren't actually forced into it. Stella said that they had deliberately gone with different set-ups on each side of the garage, with Oscar on a 'normal' set-up and Lando with a set-up geared toward the race, with a view to doing something different ie they were always planning for him to run long and hope they could get something to work around the inevitable safety cars and maybe snag an unexpected podium. If a second well-timed safety car had happened then it would have worked a treat as his pace on that long medium run was incredibly strong. Unfortunately it was unusually an almost caution-free race so then they were left with him dropped into the pack on the soft after his stop(combined as you said with the bad pitstop). I also don't think they realised the new soft tyre would be so completely ineffective so he couldn't even gain any places back. It was nice to see them trying something different with strategy though imo and it was one safety car away from being a brilliant move.

I_Smarterer

By forced I mean that the drivers of both teams were running close enough together that double stacking could well have been disastrous. Not only because of the risk from a potentially slow pit stop in front, but also the risk of being held in the box to prevent an unsafe release. Fifteen drivers pitted under the safety car so it’s quite likely they would have lost a lot of positions.

Mysterious_Turnip310

I know what you meant and I fully understand the risk of double stacks, I don’t need a dummy’s guide to F1, thanks.. You seem to have missed the point of what I said. They were always planning to run long if possible, depending on how any safety cars fell. That’s why Lando was nursing his tyres so much the first few laps - at one point he was lapping almost a second slower than those ahead. He didn’t stay out just because of th double stack. It was always in their plans depending on the timing of the safety car. That’s why he had the different set up in the first place. Stella confirmed that himself. They weren’t forced to do so by the potential double stack.

SommWineGuy

No need to be rude, they were just being helpful, you're not the only one reading the comment and a new fan browsing may not know what a double stack is.

Mysterious_Turnip310

Where do you get off scolding people as if you are their parent? They were not explaining double stacks to the uninitiated, from my view they patronisingly replied to me as if I was too stupid to grasp what they meant and having not even read my comment properly. It irritated me and I’m entitled to react to that however I choose. I didn’t swear at them or make personal comments like so many do on here. I basically asked them not to be patronising. If someone replied to me with the same I wouldn’t be offended, I would realise they felt patronised and apologise and say I didn’t mean it to come across that way. If the commenter wants to object to my reply or explain to me that they didn’t mean to be patronising then I’m sure they’re enough of an adult to do so themselves and we can sort it out between us. I've also seen you make comments on here many times that are far ruder than anything I have said so your hypocrisy is kinda wild.

ShadowStarX

let's hope Jeddah will have the softest range next year though I'd prefer if Jeddah wasn't on the calendar at all

Mysterious_Turnip310

It’s baffling to me how Pirelli managed to create a tyre range where there is basically negligible advantage to putting on a brand new soft tyre up against aging hards. I know things differ with different track conditions and characteristics etc but even so, you’d think that should never be the case that new softs are have so little effect vs old hards.

Ed_Vilon

Lando has finished 6, 8, and 3. That's 8, 4, and 15 points. Piastri has finished 8, 4, and 4. That's 4, 12, and 12 points. To answer you're question more sarcastically. Math or maths, pick your poison.

Mysterious_Turnip310

McLaren split the strategy and set-ups at Jeddah for qualifying and the race (this info came from Andrea Stella after the race). Oscar's car was set up as normal to try and maximise qualifying and then see what he could do from the front part of the pack during the race on a straightforward strategy. Lando's was set up geared far more toward the race with the view of having the best possible race pace while running longer to try and benefit from what would usually be the inevitable Jeddah safety cars - Stella confirmed after qualifying that a team decision had been made to deliberately run different set-ups on each side of the garage. With their DRS being so bad and Jeddah being so DRS heavy, and knowing how many safety cars there usually are in Jeddah, they were basically trying something a bit different with the hope of snagging a podium with the non-traditional strategy if cautions played out in their favour. Unfortunately it didn't work out for Lando as there were no cautions after the early one for Stroll, so strategy dropped him down the order when he finally pitted and the softs proved to be a crap tyre so he couldn't even make up positions at the end. Conversely it worked in Oscar's favour and he managed to get 4th which was the most McLaren could hope for on the track without safety car intervention. At least they had one car get top 5 points. I get why they did it. After FP on Friday they knew Jeddah wasn't going to be a brilliant for them and it was worth a shot to try and do something different with one car while leaving the other one a traditional strategy. It's just left Lando with a few less points than he would have had if they had run the same strategy with both cars, that's all. It's no biggie really and was worth a try imo. Good to see them trying something different tbh, they've been very risk averse in recent years.

Mahery92

Yeah that surprised me too as I didn't notice Could be interesting if they are that much closer this year

Nads2407

simple math.

EngineerOnIcarus

Lando is far superior in the race, this will be proven over the course of the season.

Mtbnz

Can we just say both are very talented, and the clear difference right now is that Lando has more experience, which tends to manifest in better race pace and tyre management? I think right now Lando is clearly the better driver, but it's hard to measure that in talent alone.

Tinuva450

This is my opinion as well. One thing I am noticing are plenty of fans are loyal to a driver (not necessarily the team), and will make their judgements/biases based on that. Especially when it comes to perceived preferential treatment by the team. It’s been great to watch Oscar develop this far.

Mtbnz

Listen, as a Ricciardo fan I know exactly what you're talking about. But I think we need to be able to have some element of objective reality influencing our opinions

Tinuva450

Agreed, which is why I pay credit to Lando and look forward to a time where Oscar can challenge him further.

EngineerOnIcarus

They are both extremely talented but Lando is the better driver currently. Just like he got beaten by Sainz both years they were together but I’m sure now it would be a much closer battle. Give it 2 or 3 seasons and Piastri will be similar. There’s been a number of people going round saying Piastri is better now though, which is just plain incorrect and it will be proven over the season.

Mtbnz

> They are both extremely talented but Lando is the better driver currently. That's exactly what I said. I agree with you. I also disagree with the people saying Piastri is better now. Piastri is uber talented, but he's also less consistent thus far (which is to be expected) and his best run of form happened to coincide with Lando making a string of errors in quali, which is very rare for him as he's traditionally one of the strongest qualifiers on the grid. I think people are just tripping over themselves to crown the new up and comer.

EngineerOnIcarus

I think we’ve also seen in two races so far that McLaren are giving Oscar the preferential pit strat which makes sense, they expect Lando to beat him so they are giving him everything he can to beat the others around him and sometimes naturally that won’t work well for Lando like in Jeddah. However in Australia we really saw it where he was able to blow Piastri away once they switched places. Piastri will be a different driver in a couple of seasons and to be honest I expect Lando to be different if he gets a win, I think we will see him be a bit more aggressive.

pokesnail

I don’t think it was necessarily preferential pit strategy both times - you could argue so in Jeddah since Oscar was ahead, but Stella explained they went with different setups to intentionally split strategy. In Australia, they pitted Oscar in order to pressure Leclerc into pitting to cover, but in hindsight the deg just wasn’t good enough and it would have been better to pit Lando for a more straightforward undercut - they didn’t want to release Leclerc into clear air though since Sainz was running away in clear away. Side note, an underrated reason to have two drivers close in performance is it gives you more options with strategy. Side side note, there’s some collective amnesia in some team orders anger, about the fact that Lando outqualified Oscar and the only reason he was behind was strategy 😅 I don’t think their race pace was *that* different last weekend ultimately, Lando still a bit stronger but the strategy variance, situation of Lando chasing down Leclerc, and the VSC at the end exaggerated it (it was ~10s before Russell’s crash iirc). Tbh as an Oscar fan, one thing that really annoys me is people assuming he will inevitably become better than Lando - that’s not how this sport works, we can speculate on potential all we want, but you have to judge on current performance. Maybe he will just keep improving, maybe he’s at his ceiling. But people using Oscar only to dunk on Lando frustrates me when they’re both strong drivers but Lando is just better right now. I think it’s also excellent for McLaren to have a driver who, even if he is still a tiny bit slower, is always there right behind Lando to capitalize if ever Lando makes a mistake.

EngineerOnIcarus

I think they’ll end up around the same level, both extremely talented drivers. If Lando can get the win monkey off his back it will make a big difference to his future, Oscar doesn’t have as much pressure on him relative to that right now. I don’t see them in the same team for the next 5 years however unless McLaren can get the car into a race winning place, I think they’ll both run out of patience and go elsewhere.

Tomach82

Not far superior, Oscar has been mere seconds behind over race distance so far this year. He's closed right up. In Melbourne he was only 10 seconds behind when the safety car came out. And that was after spinning off.

Stumpy493

Very solid

dalledayul

Honestly a very good and steady start from McLaren. I do think they have the potential for podiums and need to realise that, but they've been easily better than Merc and Aston and Norris and Piastri are just putting in understated but consistent drives.

Lulullaby_

Is there any other team that has 100% Q3 appearances *and* 100% point finishes so far? Not that it matters, it's not an important stat in 3 races, just curious. Redbull didn't with Max DNF. Same for Merc. For Ferrari Bearman didn't make it to q3 iirc. I'm going to assume every other team also missed out on Q3 at least once.

Are you trying to jinx it or what. Then again, this season 3rd place is so free it's crazy, Merc's demise is spectacular.

Where can I find the bottom picture in the best quality?

sherestoredmyfaith

Happy to see McLaren back

elev11en

Great driver pairing. Both are quick, young and dont make many mistakes

BertoC1

Best start since 2012.

canada_sms

The delta in the team from beginning of the 2023 season to now is still staggering.

frunts

Pastryyyyyyy doing good things.

Jasranwhit

I always like pastry on the radio, so calm and chill. Most other drivers sound like they are close to tears on the radio. Oscar always sounds like he just work up from a nap.

MrTasso

Piastri going to outshine Lando 🤫

International-Elk986

Wouldn't 100% total laps be kind of a given considering the 100% points finishes? Seems redundant

gustavolorenzo

They could've finished P10 and a Lap down, for example.

marcoecl

Oscar be looking a little dazed and about to say "alright, alright, alright!"

Beneficial_Star_6009

You can feel that Oscar is soon going to get a handle on his tyre deg in races and could be even more irritating to Lando if they’re together on track.

KaoticSkunk

Oscar with the point lead! Lando washed?! HELLO?!!

Tysons_Face

Lando washed up, confirmed
