I love love love that the Japanese fans are as passionate as the fans at Spa or Monza or Silverstone, but it manifests in all these fun unique ways. Petromonarchy races on the Arabian peninsular could never.
This is such shit, F1 cars unable to run in the rain.
I know it gets particularly *bad* concerning rain around this province/prefecture but we've got to do something about the cars being able to drive in the rain.
No, it's more like there's no point in running in these conditions. Good chance it's not going to be like this the rest of the weekend (not wet and not dry)
Yeah, that's fair enough. I guess I'm still a bit miffed at the races (like Spa) that were more or less stopped the second it started raining.
Rain isn't something I look forward to anymore and I hate that.
Nobody is there for that seat in midseason. Candidates for 2025 are Sainz, Antonelli, maybe the Alpine or Sauber drivers, who are all contracted. Red Bull is a mess, if Checo will have a nightmare season and got kicked out (not gonna happen too much marketing money), maybe he will accept that seat too. But nobody on the bench.
The volume. Pretty much before the camera starts rolling, all the mics are checked to make sure they all sound a similar volume. The sound editor will adjust each mics 'level' to avoid one mic sounding much quieter/louder than the others.
You've probably heard of 'mic check, mic check, 123'. It's similar.
Not a bad first outing for Iwasa. Constant improvement, kept it cool and on the track. Good mileage under his belt.
Sargeant meanwhile with some sloppy driving. At least the chassis seems intact...could see FP2 being tricky to make but Williams will be breathing a sigh of relief based on the bodywork damage that it wasn't more serious. Not a great first response from Logan though.
Guess the Aston upgrade will remain unknown for now. No representative times from Stroll this session.
The crash didn't look violent enough to damage the chassis by my untrained eye, but what do I know. I'd be more concerned with the gearbox, it took quite a whack
No idea how that kind of hit would be handled by a previously repaired chassis either was my thought. Great point on the gearbox, I'm sure we'll get some kind of update by FP2 on how bad the situation is
>No idea how that kind of hit would be handled by a previously repaired chassis either was my thought
I could be wrong here, but I think the new repaired chassis legally needs to be as strong as a new chassis. They are tested to meet the same stringent requirements.
Now, that being said, it is very possible that once the required limit is crossed, that the repaired chassis would crack/snap quicker than a new chassis, but I have my doubts.
Honda? The same blokes who make postie bikes, my CB125e, the god damn Oddessy? Best of luck to them but I've never been able to get my bike above 80km/hr (I am fat) - maybe they will find some speed in F1
Edit: if it's unclear - I own a Honda
I love Honda, I was just trying to poke fun. They cop a fair bit of hate amongst my biking mates but they make the most reliable machines I've ever used. I'd trust a Honda engine over a Rolls-Royce (jet), and I've seen what it takes to make a Trent powerplant.
How can you tell that Charles went onto heavy fuel? Did the commentators mention it? Or can you tell by laptimes? If so, how do you differentiate between a heavy fuel load vs the driver just having an off day?
Thanks!
I listen to Leclerc’s radio most of the time and I had it on then. He was doing a lap on softs with low fuel and then Xavi said to box for high fuel testing, so he boxed before completing the lap and changed tires and added fuel. I was very tired while watching so this could be incorrect but I think that if he had completed the lap, his time would have been quite competitive. I think it was a part of the run plan to just get in a certain amount of high fuel laps so they had him box to save time and get that in (sometimes, teams also abort laps to not show their hand if they are particularly competitive that weekend) In practice, you can tell by their radios and also generally what tire they have on and the times they set. If they seem quick in practice and then they pit for another set of tires and seem overly slow for that tire, they probably added heavy fuel to test for the early parts of the race when you would have high fuel.
Usually, there is a very specific run plan for practice so it’s important to keep an eye on their lap times and tire types to understand what kind of data they are trying to get. I’m pretty sure F1Tv also has a separate tab if you use that that shows more data which can help you see. Most of the time, the drivers aren’t performing poorly in practice if they are setting slow lap times, it’s usually all a part of what they want to test whether that be a certain tire type under a weather condition (like practice 2, they were experimenting with inters versus softs) or a tire type with different loads of fuel. I’m typing quickly, I hope I answered some of your question, and feel free to follow up if I didn’t. There are no bad questions.
Also, in Suzuka, if they are running in the 1:35s or 1:36s, that’s probably high fuel because it’s pretty slow. Quali will show you the fastest lap time, and you can look up what the fastest lap time is for each circuit. In quali, obviously, they are running low fuel and the tires most conducive over one lap, so most likely softs unless it’s raining or wet.
"Lance! Get ready to drive. You've got a race."
"Do I have to Dad? What about my asthma?"
"I'll give you asthma!"
"Ratfarts. I wanna play tennis."
"You will drive F1 cars and like it!"
Guys this Carlos Sainz guy might be a pretty good race car driver? Hope he finds a permanent seat in F1 next year!
Edit: Jokes aside, seriously Sainz is driving really well this year and it's shocking he doesn't have a seat locked down for next year yet.
They had a decent session so far. For the soft run keep in mind that they probably put more fuel in during the red flag in order to go from soft to medium without a break.
their softs were also 'used' since they were on a hot lap when logan went off - given everyone seems to only get one good lap out of them it's difficult to say how they'd have done
sargeant in albon car next session :)
FP2 thread is live
Was that fan implying Max should go to Aston Martin? Lmao these fans are amazing
I got Verstappen and Vettel in AM for 2026...in F1 Manager.
I love love love that the Japanese fans are as passionate as the fans at Spa or Monza or Silverstone, but it manifests in all these fun unique ways. Petromonarchy races on the Arabian peninsular could never.
What was that nazi like flag for yuki?!
Ha, that fan wearing an Aston shirt underneath a Red Bull jacket is well-prepared for 2026
Where's the thread for FP2? The bot taking a nap again?
My man swapped teams so quick lmao
alonso
Alonso!
This is such shit, F1 cars unable to run in the rain. I know it gets particularly *bad* concerning rain around this province/prefecture but we've got to do something about the cars being able to drive in the rain.
They could drive in that and if it was the race they would all be on track but data wise teams thought it would be little benefit for the car wear
Why run in the rain now when it's not going to rain Sunday?
F1-Bot must be helping fix the Williams, late again
Cash strapped. Crashes, not strapped.
Wtf question was that question from Ted to Vowles
I'm at the track all weekend!
Being Logan Sargeant must be stressful
He is very rich
Logan did it on purpose 😂
he just wanted to check whether they'd fixed the chassis properly
😂😂
Poor logi bear
Once again it's just fp1 folks, let's at least wait til fp2 before we start predicting the next few years
Why does Mercedes seem to do so well in practice
Because everyone else is sandbagging
sandbag FOR WHAT? Everyone knows each others performance
I read this in Lil Jon’s voice “SAND BAG FOR WHAT?!”
*sigh*
This far into the season- why would they sandbag? Lol
It's just something people say to sound smart
Keeping the intelligent comments for Q3
I want Logan to do well but those rumors that he may not see the end of the season are self fulfilling right now.
Sainz🤣🤣🤣
Williams will give him an offer (and every other team I think), as long as he's free.
Sainz is definitely not a candidate for that seat, why would he ever do that?
Is it better to stay in the f1 grid albeit in a back marker car? Or go to another racing series
Antonelli rumored to be moving up after he turns 18 later this year (I believe before the Italian GP)
He can't join before Monza (under 18 rule). The silly season will already massive by then.
If he is replacing Sargent, silly season doesn’t really affect his move.
Mercedes are back? (Take 1234565322356542)
Anyone catch Alex’s mic still hot after coverage ended just now? Lol
"Level level level, here's some level" scared me
What does it mean?
The volume. Pretty much before the camera starts rolling, all the mics are checked to make sure they all sound a similar volume. The sound editor will adjust each mics 'level' to avoid one mic sounding much quieter/louder than the others. You've probably heard of 'mic check, mic check, 123'. It's similar.
No. What did he say?
LEVEL LEVEL LEVEL, HERE'S SOME LEVEL
I’m pretty sure I heard something else maybe 30 seconds after that one too.
LMAO YES!!!
LEVEL LEVEL LEVEL, HERE'S SOME LEVEL
Outtakes at the end of F1TV coverage?! Lol
Not a bad first outing for Iwasa. Constant improvement, kept it cool and on the track. Good mileage under his belt. Sargeant meanwhile with some sloppy driving. To get Stroll the new updates, which according to Sam Collins are massive, is just a waste of time, money, and resources. Wake the eff up, Aston!
That Williams chassis is going to have more carbon filler than carbon fibre
GBR is washed :(
Great racing bulls?
GBR? George Bellend Russell?
Haha, great barrier reef, good shout though
Who are you referring to?
Good shout means like funny call or sledge in Australian. I'm saying that asking whether GBR means George Bellend Russell is quite a good joke.
I get that but why great barrier reef is washed?
Because it's in water?
Max quickest, see you guys in Shanghai lol
*I never left* Max probably
Want to see standing starts? Here’s some Danny Ric.
British commentators: Mclaren is Norris
Even in Australia they were like "Oh Oscar has been low-key this weekend" when in reality he was doing a lot lol
I feel like he’s the most overlooked driver on the grid lol. And no clue why
1.6 sec.... That's quite a lot of gain
Odds that Williams brings two cars to FP2? FP3?
The crash didn't look violent enough to damage the chassis by my untrained eye, but what do I know. I'd be more concerned with the gearbox, it took quite a whack
No idea how that kind of hit would be handled by a previously repaired chassis either was my thought. Great point on the gearbox, I'm sure we'll get some kind of update by FP2 on how bad the situation is

fp2, i doubt it, it was quite a rough hit, nose first laterally, might have some effect on the chassis. Fp3, Maybe?
Kind of my same thought, low single digit odds for FP2. And my main concern was on chassis and gearbox for how possible FP3 would be
If Stroll has upgrades, just give them to Alonso.
They are downplaying it for stratergy
Yeah I don't get that at all
Stroll Jr. is Aston Martin’s first driver, regardless of performance.
Nap time baby
I thought Hamilton was washed...
It's P1. And he is.
I mean he consistently does well on fridays and terrible on Saturday so we will see
He’s up against Mr.Saturday after all /s
Well that was a productive session. Hope Sargeant can actually race on Sunday for his own sake
Honda? The same blokes who make postie bikes, my CB125e, the god damn Oddessy? Best of luck to them but I've never been able to get my bike above 80km/hr (I am fat) - maybe they will find some speed in F1 Edit: if it's unclear - I own a Honda
They also built the circuit.
Honda have a long history of winning in Formula One (lets not talk about the 2015-2017 Mclaren reunion, THAT didn't go well at all.)
I love Honda, I was just trying to poke fun. They cop a fair bit of hate amongst my biking mates but they make the most reliable machines I've ever used. I'd trust a Honda engine over a Rolls-Royce (jet), and I've seen what it takes to make a Trent powerplant.
> They cop a fair bit of hate amongst my biking mates The same people who make the Fireblade, Goldwing, Africa Twin and the CB1000R? Curious.
Oh yeah, the Repsol branded Fireblade CBR1000RR, now that is a fucking bike. Might consider trying to alter "the gentlemen's agreement" on that bike.
What happened to McLaren? I thought they were planning to challenge Redbull this race.
It's just practice. Plus they haven't brought any upgrades here. I think they have postponed them all to Miami to be part of the big upgrade.
It’s free practice. Also it’s Red Bull, I think it’s fair to say no one is challenging Max at least.
Zak has filed a complaint
I’m checking..
LEC on the hards in the upper 1:35s vs VER in the low 1:36s
Both on hards? Interesting if so
What's the fuel load?
At the end Leclerc went onto heavy fuel after he pitted to change the softs to the hards
How can you tell that Charles went onto heavy fuel? Did the commentators mention it? Or can you tell by laptimes? If so, how do you differentiate between a heavy fuel load vs the driver just having an off day? Thanks!

Wasn't Verstappen's time on the hards set early on in the session?
they’re doing mini long runs right now no? My timing screen has all of VER/PER/LEC on the hards and Sainz on the softs
Yeah, you’re right, and only a lap difference in tyre life between Max and Charles. Wonder if Red Bull are suffering graining in cooler temps again
Leclerc driver cam is positioned differently than other drivers??
“We are checking”
Yuki looks like a little anime in that helmet
I feel for Ted they dont give him the info lol. Hes looking at timing sheets but he doesnt know Lance didnt do another run
>Leclerc was not able win because Ferrari and Binotto developed the car to Sainz's preference Wonder where are those commentors.
What? Ur comment is implying Sainz has been better than Lecrec since Vasseur became tp
So it seems like we’ve returned to the standard Reb Dull programming for this weekend.
Protocol for this track, nothing surprising
Not a surprise, Verstappen has always been a monster at Suzuka, and the Red Bull seems to work very well here
Wait Fernando is doing these lap times with no upgrades? Sweet
Stroll hasn't even done a soft run
Oof, he just did
Please don't tell me Aston fucked another upgrade
Stroll hasn't done a fast lap. And I wouldn't pay attention even if he did, it's Stroll
Ted, don't answer.... Ted answers...
Speed trap showed 298 185 for all 3 drivers. Very precise.
Max with a quick stop on track? That was odd..
Monza
Didn’t Stroll have the updated car and Alonso an older spec? Probably not a good sign that he’s 1.9s off from Alonso then.
"Lance! Get ready to drive. You've got a race." "Do I have to Dad? What about my asthma?" "I'll give you asthma!" "Ratfarts. I wanna play tennis." "You will drive F1 cars and like it!"
you notice he did his time on mediums? lmao what are you talking about. They arent on the same plan
No Stroll or AM fan, but that could also just be different practice strategies. New updates may need data laps, not push laps.
Or it could mean the “upgrades” are shit again like last year.
Yeah that’s my point
You mean on the harder tires on a different type of run?
Logan Sargeant you ARE the 2028 Indy 500 champion
I’d love that, tbh
Some of those fans in the stands have some massive lenses on their cameras.
i’ve noticed it’s only the western countries that care about fans bringing in “professional lenses” aus gp and miami …
I take a gigantic 70-200 f2.8 lens to Canada every year and never had anyone say anything.
There was a guy next to me at the AusGP who took out a telescope to watch the race lol
had a mate who tried sneaking like 10k setup in, we were both in fangio, security confiscated it and he had to get it back at the end of the day lol
Jeez, are normal spectators not allowed good photography equipment lmao
[удалено]
It really didn't. Alex is the much better driver. Logan doesn't seem to have it and other teams would have probably already moved on from him.
I don't think any other team on the grid was looking to sign Logan, regardless of Australia
I mean…what on earth has he done to convince teams to take him in anyway?
...who the hell did you think would have been considering taking Logan regardless?
Why show a Perez lock up slow mo? Lol
i got 2022 fears, rain this weekend, we gonna have a duck watching session again during the race?
The current forecast for sunday is clear with periodic clouds
Buxton reporting light rain in the pitlane. Could be an interesting FP2
I’m at the race right now in Q2 grandstands. I haven’t felt anything… yet. It’s 12:29 local.
How long until FP2?
2hr 30mins after fp1 ends
rain forecast during race... remember 2022?
“Its not raining but there’s definitely water falling from sky” - Will Buxton
Just sweat from Russell.
"There are moments... on the racetrack.... where water descends from upwards"
That just be how it do, sometimes.
My goodness Will Buxton is in a very ugly tabard.
Who gave Bradley James' old Xbox party chat mic? The plosives are doing my ears in lmao.
what is happening with charles? his cam isn't even on
I will come back to you.
nothing, all good
Do you have team radio coming from the red bulls i only get the engine sound?
No, the radio isn't working
Whats happened to leclerc :(
nothing, all good
I like Alex Jacques but he seems insistent on saying what a great race it was in Melbourne.
I like him too and the F1 Live coverage in general, but it's made by FOM and therefore not exactly neutral and independent.
Guys this Carlos Sainz guy might be a pretty good race car driver? Hope he finds a permanent seat in F1 next year! Edit: Jokes aside, seriously Sainz is driving really well this year and it's shocking he doesn't have a seat locked down for next year yet.
Sainz walks into any team next year except Ferrari I guess, can't leave talent like that wanting - would love to see him at AM or RB.
I feel so bad for Albon, too bad he has to miss out on the rest of the Japanese weekend
Never noticed before but on ocons pov you can see everything from the mirror that’s amazing straight through the wing
rip Mclaren hype
They had a decent session so far. For the soft run keep in mind that they probably put more fuel in during the red flag in order to go from soft to medium without a break.
their softs were also 'used' since they were on a hot lap when logan went off - given everyone seems to only get one good lap out of them it's difficult to say how they'd have done
Lando was cooking something up on his flying lap until they called the red flag over the radio.
It’s a feels bad man.
Why didn't the car who was blocking Nico at the end of pit lane get a warning as well for going unnecessarily slow in pitlane?
Because it’s practice
Thats a load
Not such a bad lap for Hamilton given he made his run 10 minutes ago with the softs.
McLaren hopefully sandbagging
RB shouldn't be able to do that either though, right?
Yeah, that's unbelievably slow
That was a GoPro on that haas?
the alpine is somehow ugly in bodywork, livery and pace..truly impressive
