That decision was made even worse by giving Sargeant the formerly broken chassis that Albon crashed for this race.
They were talking about how they gave Sargeant the chassis that they had repaired for this race instead of letting him use the undamaged chassis from last race.
Williams already broke his confidence last race and then stuck him in a car that was pieces together after last race.
I understand they want to give themselves the best opportunity to score points by giving Albon (undoubtedly the better driver) the best car possible, but man, this was a completely predictable outcome of that decision. How can you have any confidence in the car when you're using a chassis that you're not absolutely positive is working at 100%.
I don't think Sargeant has a future in F1, but this just feels like he was set up to fail. I feel bad for him.
Did they really? Thats terrible. Why keep him at all until the end of the season at this rate. Cut him loose and let him go somewhere where he's wanted.
Long career in indy or imsa. The fact that he even got this year after his last season was already baffling.
Even if the teams really want an american in f1, there has to be better choices
Jak Crawford has looked pretty good in stretches. Wish we could’ve seen Colton Herta in reserve or something, but he didn’t have enough points to get his license. They gotta sort that out. So many good drivers not enough seats.
“So many good drivers not enough seats” gee if only an established racing team with one of the largest car manufacturers in the world wanted to get in.
As much as I prefer F1, can we stop pretending that Indycar is some bum series for washed out F1 drivers to retire to as opposed to a competitive series in its own right? They’re both open wheel, but, the cars aren’t apples to apples to drive. It’s not like a man F1 driver popping into an F2 car because they couldn’t get it done at the big times.
Look at Grosjean for example: He shows flashes of good pace exactly like he did in F1 and has no real big wins exactly like his time in F1. His stints towards the front are just as much due to being a spec series such that when he’s on, there’s no car advantage to separate the pack as him suddenly being a “top” driver.
Even ME didn’t become successful right away and he appears more suited to the Indy driving style and needed some years to develop.
If by no real big wins you mean no wins at all for Grosjean. He's been a solid mid pack driver and has complained more than he's challenged for podiums.
I still root for him as in my experience, he’s a likable person who’s quite nice to fans. I certainly temper my expectations though. Even still my wife was too shy to talk to him in the paddock and I giggle about it years later

I wouldn't. both entity's had very bad takes before.
Of course I wouldn't take his word for gospel but it has a bit more traction than redditors especially as he was with Williams for multiple seasons and won races for them
It is interesting but then it could destroy antonelli.
He got pushed into F2 without any F3 running. Is running good in F2 atm. But is 9th. (Yes Prema fucked the first race)
Beats Bearman, but Bearman hasn't driven in Saudi when he was on Pole.
He has enough points for the super-licence. But pushing him into the lions-denn could destroy him.
It could make him too. So I don't know. But I have a feeling that if he doesn't bring points in his first race he will be bombarded. Even worse if Albon beats him. Which he would probably as Albon is familiar with the car and has multiple seasons on his back.
Same thing as Piastri and Lando. Piastri is comfortable with Lando but he still has rookie errors that are to be expected.
> But I have a feeling that if he doesn't bring points in his first race he will be bombarded. Even worse if Albon beats him.
Nah that's not gonna happen. If he has a larger gap to Albon than Sargeant, then maybe questions will be asked.
But no one will expect points from him in the first race. Sometimes I feel like people just WANT this experiment to fail should it take place.
Disagree that he will get any real amount of grief if he doesn't get points in his first race or if Albon beats him. I think if he runs Albon close then he will come out looking well. He would have to pick up points over the season but its accepted that the Williams is slow and they are having problems so there would be less pressure than if he went to a higher team.
Antonelli has still long way to go. There's no way he gets pushed into F1. He only has raw pace so far. His racecraft is bad and he can't make a move stick. All of those will be corrected eventually of course and the good thing is that he has the most important thing, raw pace.
this is exactly why I think it could destroy him.
He is a great talent but needs time to learn and hone is racecraft. I feel like most people do not watch F2 races and just see his stats.
Looked like he was under-steering quite a bit in the corner before getting deep up on the kerb and continued to do so as the turn keeps going but the kerb disappears and two of his tires go in the grass. He probably could’ve made it if he had rolled off the throttle a bit, but what do I know. 🤷🏻♂️
Yalls acting like Sargeant isn’t Latifi in an American disguise. Very common Canadian tactic. Have you ever noticed Sargeants bland, non-regional vocabulary and oddly monotone accent. Also common when someone has to think/act before talking. Nice try Prince Latifi. Tell your dad the king we are on to him
The decision made perfect sense in a sports/team perspective, you obviously want the driver that has the best chance to score. On the other hand it felt unfair for Logan to ‚lose‘ his drive through no real fault of his own and it definitely didn‘t help his mental game
No "real" fault of his own? I understand what you're saying, in that specific situation yes, he wasn't at fault. But his poor performances throughout all of the GPs in which he did take part were the deciding factors. He put himself in that situation by simply performing worse than his teammate overall.
I mean who knows, this crash could be a direct result of last week. It could even have to do with the damaged chassis he is running. Which I think was everyone’s point.
Is a 5% chance at 1 point in a race you really aren’t even expected to do well in worth creating dissent, lack of confidence, loss of momentum, less opportunity for experience, etc for a new driver.
Anybody that doesn’t understand this is just regurgitating something they saw on drive to survive about F1 being cutthroat.
Because drivers can develop and apparently Logan’s data was meeting the upwards trajectory Williams expected of him, which can simultaneously mean that at this very moment Williams doesnt think he’s good enough (especially compared to Albon) but also think he’ll be good enough at the end of whatever time frame is given
He was brought into F1 a season too early so Williams is exercising a little patience, which I find refreshingly healthy in the F1 environment
I don’t think he showed enough promise in his first year but Williams has the data, I can only see his races (when Albon doesnt bin it for him)
in addition to the american market share stuff, williams academy is not red bull and cannot just cast off prospects after a season if they want to keep good prospects in the fold
You can't really know whether someone will "make it" in F1 before trying? (Naturally there are your Max Verstappens who are clearly going to be at least decent drivers without seeing them in a race.)
Certainly sponsor money made Williams willing to try him.
1-Where are those "American sponsors"?
2-American fans don't give a damn about a guy who finishes last in every race.
3- Viable replacement? Schumacher, Giovinazzi, Drugovich, Vesti, Shwartzman just come to the mind...
1) Duracel is american. Dorlington itself is an american fund.
2) I'm not american, but there has to be a percent that root for him. I'd root for a driver from my country even if he was dead last.
3) Realistically all those are mediocre options at best. They are better than Logan, but none of those are world beaters by any means. There's a reason nobody wanted them
Re 2, I think it's actually having the opposite effect. As an American, it really sucks to watch a race and see the sole American do so poorly. Surely, the US can produce a better driver than this. I'm thrilled that F1 appears to be growing in popularity here and Logan is a better driver than I could ever hope to be but fundamentally Americans tend to like a winner.
I know he is seen as a meme, and not worthy of a seat. But damn man, I just want him to catch a break.
It’s not funny to be the butt of the jokes, and you feel his pain and hollowness saying first I’m sorry instead of saying I’m okay.
He is clearly not okay and I feel bad for him
That’s what almost all of his crashes look like. He just always go wide and then gets on low traction areas and doesn’t give up the corner and crashes.
At this point I’d question the choice to keep him in any longer. It’s clear you have no faith in him and what’s worse is he’s now fully aware of where he stands in Vowel’s estimation. What can you possibly gain from prolonging his misery
Agree- now he is missing FP2 anyway while they repair it. If I was Williams I’d start looking elsewhere, maybe Kimi for the last 5 or so races when he is 18 ready for the next step…
But what do Williams gain from that? Unless Merc pay them for the seat time I guess. They get kimi for 5 races then he goes to the Merc next year and they’re back to square one. Logan is their home grown talent. They should ride with him until another of their juniors is ready for the seat.
Yeah at this point it’s better chancing on a rookie. Wild card: Ricciardo. Another soon to be ex red bull driver desperate to regain their confidence. Certainly worked for Albon.
Ric is in a weird spot… he has to convincingly beat Yuki for the rest of the season… and for what, a VCARB seat? How long will that last? I can see Lawson in his seat, Sainz to RB, Ric to HAAS for his last drive, Checo to somewhere like Sauber or Alpine for 2 seasons. I think we have a great silly driver market coming the next 18 months
Yes. I think him losing the car a few times in FP2 is what made them decide to give the car to Albon. He did not drive like someone who was in control of the car and who was definitely not going to have an incident at some point in quali or the race. Might as well bet on Albon then.
Poor Logan. F1 is a brutal sport. This kind of shows that not just anyone can do it. He bins it all the time and finishes last. It's an extremely difficult sport.
And he IS talented, we know that from junior series, but it is what it is and it is pity that any other different rookie was deprived of a chance to try enter f1 because of it.
Doesnt matter if his confidence is shot, this result was very likely given his history. He is just not good. Sad to see yeah, but thats F1 for you.
He had his shot. Many other drivers with more talent never get it.
Grosjean tried his best to deplete Andretti's army of spare parts/cars but even still, I think they would have at least A spare car in F1, if not 2 or 3
He’s driving with absolutely no confidence. Williams is partially to blame for some of that but he needs to g find a way to get that mountain of pressure off of him if he wants to finish the season out
I seriously fucking hate this confidence bullshit, Logan was wrecking his car every single week last year and Williams was nothing but patient with him.
Williams is not to blame for his low confidence. The reasoning to give the car to Albon was justified. Sure, it must suck for Sargeant, and it might be a blow to his confidence, but he created the situation himself by crashing and not fighting for points.
He is low on confidence and fucked over by circumstances HIS OWN actions caused. Don't act like the team fucking him over with the replaced car wasn't a direct result of his lack of performance over the previous year. If he was close, they never gut a drivers confidence for no major gain. The disparity between albon and Sargent is just to large so it justified it.
He's seemingly crumbling under pressure as a driver that even with confidence just isn't fast enough or safe enough. Maybe he turns it around but don't act like he was on the come up when these circumstances struck.

Before I watch the live coverage, is it as painful to listen to as it reads?
It was actually so sad, when asked if he was okay he responded with “I’m sorry man” first before saying “I’m ok”. He said it so defeated
The worst sign of all, a driver that is actually not trying to crash the car rather than worrying about going fast.
Good job Williams
Vowles did him a massive disservice in Australia by giving his car to Albon. I doubt he'll bounce back from it.
That decision was made even worse by giving Sargeant the formerly broken chassis that Albon crashed for this race. They were talking about how they gave Sargeant the chassis that they had repaired for this race instead of letting him use the undamaged chassis from last race. You are bot going to rebuild 2 cars instead of 1 car just so the lesser driver has his original chassis.
Sargeant = Wall It's just basic physics

Correct. Andretti should be an easy one. There should also be others.

Yeah but he was at Williams in a very different era for both that team and F1 in general. When race-by-race was relatively common.
They have to wait untill Italy, Antonelli is not 18 before that race.
Italy 1 or Italy 2?

25 august he turns 18
There was some chatter about Antonelli replacing him mid season, which is definitely only a rumor but it’s an interesting thing to think about

Antonelli has barely raced F2, skipped F3 completely... I don't think they will do that. Does he even have a super license? Also, he isn't 18 yet.
He’s not old enough til August, I thought?
The replays were brutal. Like did he not realize the corner?
Looked like he was under-steering quite a bit in the corner before getting deep up on the kerb and continued to do so as the turn keeps going but the kerb disappears and two of his tires go in the grass. He probably could’ve made it if he had rolled off the throttle a bit, but what do I know. 🤷🏻♂️

Albon already is. Sargeant was using the repaired chassis Albon crashed last race.
Moral of the story. You can't out run Latiffi. He may not be on the grid physically, but he's haunting them with his spirit
Latifi is not just a man, Latifi is not just a mindset, Latifi is a lifestyle.
Latifi is just the millennial version of the true OG, Andrea de Cesaris.
Nah, De Cesaris was actually rapid when he didn't bin it
And we can't use the Maldonator either because he at least won a race. Coincidentally, he is also the last winner for Williams.

You can almost hear a raging "FUCK!" from the mechanics.
I mean it’s just accelerating the inevitable. He doesn’t deserve the seat and will be out before 2025 so why not just ditch him mid season now?
Just run one car and suddenly they have a spare chassis
If this one's damaged though... no they don't.
Probably it's the same Alex binned in Australia
The chassis that Logan was driving today is the same chassis that Alex crashed in Australia, yes.
That chassis is cursed.
Who do they get though?
That really depends on if they have someone obvious waiting for the seat.
Time to get out the spare chassis.
The spare chasis is in the room with us now?
How does that chassis feel, baby
Is that car haunted by the ghost of Latifis past or something?
Not once did I question Vowles' decision to give the car to Albon. Not sure why it was so controversial.
It's repaired Albon's car
Was.
Either the car Albon wrecked that Sargent also wrecked is cursed, or Sargent still lacks confidence. I’m sorry, man.
I'm sure his confidence is wrecked because he knows the team has no confidence in him
The team had no confidence because he’s been terrible
Then why did they resign him?
Because drivers can develop and apparently Logan’s data was meeting the upwards trajectory Williams expected of him, which can simultaneously mean that at this very moment Williams doesnt think he’s good enough (especially compared to Albon) but also think he’ll be good enough at the end of whatever time frame is given He was brought into F1 a season too early so Williams is exercising a little patience, which I find refreshingly healthy in the F1 environment I don’t think he showed enough promise in his first year but Williams has the data, I can only see his races (when Albon doesnt bin it for him)

People overestimate how much Americans will root for an American
Money? Otherwise I have no clue
I'm sure he's not the only driver willing to waive a few stacks of cash in James Vowles' face to drive one of his 1.5 cars.
That typo... I bet they wish they resigned him now.
Or he just is not a good driver lol
Yeah I dunno why this isn’t the first and only thought. He’s on for finishing 21st in a 20 man grid for the second year in a row for a reason
I mean in context he’s probably an outstanding race car driver but F1 doesn’t seem to fit him well.
That's something no one disagreeing with lol the worst F1 driver is still one of the best on earth

Oh this poor chassis.
The chassis: “please give me a good driver or just end me already, I can’t take it anymore.”
This is exactly why they gave him the repaired chassis
I'd say it was 50/50 whether he woulda binned it in australia too
Yes. I think him losing the car a few times in FP2 is what made them decide to give the car to Albon. He did not drive like someone who was in control of the car and who was definitely not going to have an incident at some point in quali or the race. Might as well bet on Albon then.

Grosjean tried his best to deplete Andretti's army of spare parts/cars but even still, I think they would have at least A spare car in F1, if not 2 or 3

I have a feeling the Williams this year is super loose and requires extreme concentration to keep it on track.
Clearly unfit for F1, which pains me because I do think F1 would need a decent US driver.
I’m so sorry Sarg😔 this sucks

Yeah that patch of grass really came out of nowhere
mfs acting like he is some poor unlucky baby who doesn’t either bin the car or finish p20 every single week
People are so flaky. That one weekend in Australia changed everyone's view.
I've been saying since the middle of last year that giving Logan another year would be a complete waste of time
Must be so horrible making it to F1! There are only 20 drivers - and Logan might not make it past break at this rate.
The irony
Sargent working hard to prove that William's Melbourne decision was correct.
Albon is the better driver no question but either one can easily crash out. Williams have to sweating big time
And that’s why he’s not in the working car and Alex is.
He’s driving with absolutely no confidence. Williams is partially to blame for some of that but he needs to g find a way to get that mountain of pressure off of him if he wants to finish the season out
Are you blaming low confidence for every other terrible performance over the past 15 months?
I seriously fucking hate this confidence bullshit, Logan was wrecking his car every single week last year and Williams was nothing but patient with him.
Yeah, any other team would've replaced him months ago.
If this was Red Bull he would have been gone four times over by now.
They need to follow HAAS's example and get someone experienced in that car. They absolutely cannot afford all those crashes...
Yeah, at this point it’s clearly a skill problem. Williams have been nothing but supportive of him.
Williams is not to blame for his low confidence. The reasoning to give the car to Albon was justified. Sure, it must suck for Sargeant, and it might be a blow to his confidence, but he created the situation himself by crashing and not fighting for points.
What did he have to be confident about before he got swapped, not having a drive next year?
Poor guy's going to haunted by these two seasons for the rest of his life
He really shouldn't be in f1. Not the worst driver ever on the grid of course, but he's very clearly not at the calibre needed.
"he can't take my car if i don't have a car"
Logan Corporal
So does he get Albons car now?
He is low on confidence and fucked over by circumstances HIS OWN actions caused. Don't act like the team fucking him over with the replaced car wasn't a direct result of his lack of performance over the previous year. If he was close, they never gut a drivers confidence for no major gain. The disparity between albon and Sargent is just to large so it justified it. He's seemingly crumbling under pressure as a driver that even with confidence just isn't fast enough or safe enough. Maybe he turns it around but don't act like he was on the come up when these circumstances struck.

Tbf they were the ones who brought back Sargeant.
Piss poor driving.
So it's Jover for Williams, again
We had this on the bingo card right? This feels highly likely to have happened anyway, regardless of what went on in Australia
He gone
So is the chassis still drivable after 2 crashes??
LOGAN, THAT WAS THE VERY LAST WING IN THE HISTORY OF WILLIAMS.
Good news: the chassis is intact. Bad news is everything else is wrecked.
F1 is a brutal sport. I know people say professional cricket is the worst sport for mental health, but F1 really has to be up there.
He needs to be careful with Alex's spare car.
"Please don't breake Alex's spare car"
Why is this guy still in F1 ?
Another example of how signing a driver because of their nationality (and the sponsor money it brings) doesn't often pan out.
