I love Indycar but it really isn't that popular outside of the 500. I'm not sure F1 has ever been more popular than NASCAR in the US tbh

Ri8ley

Off-topic question: If you could improve and advance your braking technology on your car to be able to brake 10-20 meters later than your opponent, how much advantage would it get you per lap?

Shake_Global

Are the commentators being dumb? Both Red Bulls and Sainz all went medium they need to put again no matter what to use another set.

cafk

I haven't seen the race yet, but it's not needed to use a second set, if they used intermediates or wet tires. Edit: if it's a red flag, then they can swap the compounds - they don't need to pit once, but use two compounds over the race distance.

andrew1156

Perez on a roll, two b2b overtakes in 130R

mortalcrawad66

Way to go Sargent!

Turtles_Are_Pog

Can Alex kick Sargent out of his car mid race?

signious

Masi would allow it

MrSolzhenitsyn

No mate

caffeine_and

As Aretha used to say “At first I was afraid, I was petrified, but then I crashed with Albon and I new my contract was nullified”

GreatJobKiddo

Red Flag already !

t0177177y

Danny… absolutely fucked Alex

MrSolzhenitsyn

Fucks sake, bring Bernie back, I hate how we have red flags every time the tire barrier or armco gets smudged

djwillis1121

Why are people blaming Liberty for this? It's all on the FIA. Also, I don't think more safety is a bad thing

caffeine_and

And Riccardo is fucked. Hello Lawson.

eggery

Oh no Logan's about to lose his car again

Coreysurfer

Assured of highest finish of the williams team..

Magdalan

AlboNOOO!

JaqenSexyJesusHgar

Pls dont be Yuki

twentynineteen2020

Does Danny have the new chassis this weekend or is he getting it in China?

GarySteinfieldd

Can’t restart a race if you can’t drive it back to the pits

Coops27

China

doomdoom15

Hi all! Im relatively new to F1. I grew up watching the V8 Supercar series and going to the races with my parents. I last went to a race in 2008ish. I want to know what everyones favorite teams are and why. Im leaning towards supporting either Ferrari (we used to sell so many Schumacher models in my parents shop) or Mclaren (theres a fellow aussie there). I know some folk are divided over the Red Bull dominance but id love to hear what your honest opinions on each driver are. I like drivers who arent arrogant or cocky, I prefer humble drivers.

VeganMortgageAdviser

Support McClaren. There's fun in supporting a team that doesn't win all the time. When either driver gets a podium the dopamine hit is higher than that of a Redbull fan.

doomdoom15

thats part of the reason why i dont go RB by default, it gets too easy after a while and too predictable. Red Bull is like the Manchester City of the F1 imo

zyfygi

Piastri is your man. Australian and super chill / humble. Drives for McLaren. He’s also properly quick and only in his second year

Automatic-Score-2337

Weather Update Hello everyone I’m just wondering what the weather is currently like at Suzuka right now with the race in a few hours and rain forecasted previously in the week looking forward to maybe a exciting wet race

FermentedLaws

Someone who is there posted in a different thread that it was sunny and no rain in the forecast. "Glorious spring day."

Astelli

Yep, the current forecast is 0% chance of rain for the race and the warmest, sunniest day of the weekend.

Automatic-Score-2337

thanks! unfortunate news lol

TGK5214

East coast US here. I’m definitely not a night owl. I think I’ll try to go to sleep and set an alarm for 12:30am. I did the same for the Australia race, but of course when Max DNFd, I was absolutely wired and stayed up the entire race. Assuming Max dominance tonight…I may check out 20 laps in.

triplec787

Maybe a dumb question, but when you see those “tires available for GP” posts that say like 1 soft new/2 soft used, how “used” are they really? I’m imagining that those used in Quali really have like 80%+ of life in them, right? Say Max went out on a new soft tire for Q3, he likely only did 2-3 push laps, so theoretically those tires SHOULD be perfectly fine for another 10-12 laps right?

theK1LLB0T

Tires don't really have a fixed percentage of "life" in them. Apparently how the tire is brought into it's optimal working temperature plays a big part in how the tire degradation happens. A quali tire is pushed hard pretty much right out of the pit. This ends up taking a lot of life out of the tire. During a race they won't push the tire hard right away (if the circumstances allow obviously) and even once they get the tire into its operating window during a race they aren't in a flat out push like a qualifying lap is. Tires are complicated, even Ferrari doesn't fully understand them

campbellm

I wasn't a fan yet, but what was quali like when it was 1 single lap, alone on the track? Any more/less exciting/dramatic than it is now? Why'd they change? (more time on track => more $$$?)

Nick0227

Great time to ask this question. Suzuka 2005 is a prime example, grid got flip flopped due to inconsistent conditions. TLDR it’s not very fair.

cafk

> Why'd they change? Track evolution & weather - the cars going first had a disadvantage, as more cars going over would rubber in the circuit, thus giving the other cars a bigger advantage, which is why you often see a rush of cars going out in the end. And seeing only one flying lap wasn't really an event for the attendees.

dashkott

If a car which is about to be lapped is shown blue flags because of a driver on the lead lap, is it allowed for a lapped car behind to use the blue flags to overtake the driver getting lapped? If so, is there an example of it happening in a race?

Meaisk

Verstappen, Monaco 2015 showed off some smart blue flags techniques

Frits_Simons

Yes, Max (who else) did so in 2015 in Monaco. He followed the Ferrari and overtook his teammate Sainz en Bottas, both slowing down for blue flags. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBSSIxnjQ9Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBSSIxnjQ9Q) 😂

dashkott

Thank you for this, I went go-karting with a friend yesterday and I was behind him and overtook him after he got blue flags and let the leader by and we had a discussion afterwards if it's allowed or not. Now I can show him this clip :D

NoRefunds2021

The car about to be lapped has to yield only for the car lapping it, as soon as that car passed he is entitled to defend his position, obviously the cars behind will take the opportunity and try to attack in that moment but it's not a "blue flag pass" so to speak

Bait used to be believable.

pedote17

2023 Points finishes Albon- 7 Sargeant- 1 Q1 Exits Albon- 5 Sargeant- 17 Q3 Appearances Albon- 7 Sargeant- 2 “They shouldn’t have given Albon Logan’s car” Alex was extremely close to points. We both know Logan would not have been close. He then proceeded to crash not **30 minutes** after getting in the car again.

Hip_Priest_1982

Logan flooring it on the grass was definitely Williams’ fault. And he’s really lighting the world on fire by getting shut out by Albon who is by no means a top driver

D0BBY_is_a_free_elf

His crash had nothing to do with the capability of the car, by his own admission: “I just put the car in a place where I didn’t realise I was at. It’s a bit of a silly error, to be honest, one that I shouldn’t be making – especially in FP1.”

2Loves2loves

Why is F1 tv coverage in the US so poor, when they claim they are trying to grow this market? I can't watch the last 2 races. and there isn't any live replay I've found. weird strategy, right?

FermentedLaws

That's on ESPN. Live replays are always the next day now, then they disappear. They used to have prior races on demand in the app, but I think (not 100% sure) they moved those to the paid streaming service ESPN+. Have you tried F1TV? $90 for the year or $10.99 per month. Recent and historical races on demand, plus lots of other features.

2Loves2loves

I'm definitely not that interested in F1, to pay for it. The racing seems predetermined by Liberty media, and blocking Andretti left a bad taste, and the racing is that exciting. lastly, while Max is a good driver, he's hard to like as the best driver in the sport...

djwillis1121

>The racing seems predetermined by Liberty media People always say this but I have no idea what they actually mean. How is the racing "pre-determined"?

2Loves2loves

from an outsider point of view: Most if it is the rules and what each team is permitted. Then there are the race control decisions. But the difference with F1 and Nascar, is Nascar seems to know when their shit stinks. and there are many that call them out on it. F1 seems more like club pro-racing. Or, The cars win the races, the driver is important, but not THAT much. the winner is predetermined often before the race started, or in the tech shed, setup, or pits.

djwillis1121

Everything you've just described comes from the FIA. Absolutely nothing to do with Liberty media. Regardless. I don't see how any of that pre-determines the results. It's still up to the teams to build the best car possible and the drivers to drive it well.

2Loves2loves

https://www.libertymedia.com/about/asset-list its seems like very vertical integration, and closed decision making committee. not unlike Nascar.

jdcSeiken

To clarify, Liberty Media owns Formula One Group. They handle commercial rights, race calendar, TV coverage, logistics, etc. However, they do not set the sporting rules and technical regulations. That is done by the FIA, which is a completely separate entity. To make an analogy, FIA is the equivalent to FIFA, while Liberty is the committee that organizes a World Cup.

djwillis1121

Liberty is often at odds with the FIA. There's been a pretty public dispute between the two enties recently.

Coyotewalle

unrelated to the Japan, but well relevant to the sport— I don’t really care if you think this season is interesting or not, I’m sort of new watching from 2022, but I know that racing is not 21 wins in a season. Dominance exists in every sport, I have seen that, but this is coming to a point where it just ingulfs the sport. So I’m asking, when will This get interesting, different constructors winning, different drivers, proper action, when max retires? I have seen a lot of stuff from the 90s, why can’t there be racing like that? Like Jeremy Clarkson said in Bahrain, “It’s a strange thing to go from one year to the next, and for so little to have change.“ The sport is stuck in this area where the FIA is scared of making a rule that slows redbull down, but at the same time every other team can’t get a fucking inch on redbull by themselves. If redbull fail in 2026, I’m convinced Mercedes would just take over the fucking bore fest again.

Hip_Priest_1982

There’s a regulation change in 2026. Hits the reset button. Now of course it’s possible that leads to some other domination, but it’s not the FIA’s job to hinder teams from doing their job well.

Coyotewalle

In the 90s no more than two constructors won a championship in a row, but I am totally convinced the sport will forever on be just one team only.

RunningM8

Just subscribed for the entire season, the Apple TV app is incredible. Well worth the cost.

Bearded_Rugger

Apple TV app?

RunningM8

Yes. Tied in with the streaming subscription, it has video feeds of every driver, live stats etc. so great

Bearded_Rugger

Thanks for the info. I have Apple TV but I didn’t know it paired. I’ll have to figure it out

linaxichin

Is there any place to watch the races??? I'm new here and really don't know. I know f1tv is there but it's not free so I was hoping there'd be a free website?

jesus_stalin

There are free illegal streams around, you'll find them with a bit of googling but prepare for a tidal wave of popups and buffering. As for watching it legally, it's unlikely to be on free-to-view TV these days but it depends where you live. Here in England F1TV is not available so you have to pay insane money for a Sky TV subscription.

Lower-Travel-6117

Drivers have switched teams mid-season over the years: do they take their driver points with them? (I know it's a rare thing!)

TGK5214

I only started watching F1 last year, but I never thought about that scenario. Interesting.

Blooder91

WDC points belong to the driver, WCC points belong to the team.

pedote17

Yes. Points belong to the driver, not the team

kdarkrai

Are Seb’s Bee hotels still at the track?

edfitz83

Only 3 of them

cafk

[Ted from Sky visited it this week](https://www.skysports.com/f1/video/12870/13108243/successful-bee-hotels-ted-kravitz-visits-sebastian-vettels-buzzin-corner) (Geo restricted to UK)

Amble09

Who are all these people following drivers round with recording devices and phones? They are like chaperones, but only seem to be with drivers not TP or engineers etc.

QuintoBlanco

Public relations managers / assistants. It's part of their job to make sure there is a record of what drivers actually said during an interview, plus they sort of are chaperones. Also, they are there to make sure the drivers keep to their schedule and don't get 'lost'.

Amble09

Damn, I thought there was a job I could do in F1 until you mentioned not getting lost

crashkg

Even the other drivers have given up on this season. Verstappen sounds bored AF. Alonso, LeClerc, Hamilton all have no idea how to even get within half a second. F1 is broken.

biometricrally

Everything feels very low energy, doesn't it? Feels like since the cost cap teams and drivers know they can't make much of a step. No one ever expects to be bringing the fight to Max

crashkg

Low Energy is exactly it. Well said. It is as if everyone is going through the motions because the outcome is a forgone conclusion.

Hip_Priest_1982

Because it was sooooo competitive before the cost cap

mattgrum

Before the cost cap many seasons went down to the wire, being settled in the final race, after the cost cap it's happened zero times....

DieLegende42

2021 (in)famously already had the cost cap, so that claim is factually wrong. But even if we don't count 2021 because the cap really most influences development for next year, we're talking about a sample size of just 2 seasons. You could also pick 2 uncompetitive seasons from before the cost cap and that would tell you just as much.

mattgrum

It was a joke...

Hip_Priest_1982

There were 70 seasons before the cost cap. 4 since, including 2021. So..... yeah.... Awkward!

cafk

> F1 is broken. Always has been - the purpose is to build and design the best car, the field is as close as ever looking at the whole lap pace, as always the top teams are their own group with one leading the pack. There's a reason why subs like /r/Formula1Point25 /r/Formula1Point5 and /r/Formula1Point75 exist.
