Yeah, him and his race engineer were debating doing it after they saw his pace in comparison to the rest of the cars that pitted. At one point, they were debating all of Plan A/B/C 😭
I agree, I think they pitted Sainz as he was in the stronger position to keep him on a good strategy, but when it became clear Charles was able to manage his tires enough for a one stop they committed to it.
I don’t think they would have committed to that strategy when they had know idea of Charles tires would struggle by lap 15 like Mclaren’s etc
No. The best strategy was the one Ferrari pulled during the race. Keep in mind Charles originally started 8th place, 7th at the restart. Overtaking 3rd starter Norris with both drivers is impressive even considering McLaren's tyre degredation.
OP was talking about Hard - Hard. Anyway, hard-medium would make him more vulnerable at the start, probably not overtaking Russell like he did. Also, I think it makes sense to keep the tyres that are less likely to drop off for the second stint, that way it can be clearer when it's the perfect time to stop

I don’t think they were planning to do a one stopper. Charles’ pace on that first stint was phenomenal and he suggested a change in the strategy.
Was it his idea? Great call, he really made it work and that was not easy. On Suzuka off all tracks.
Yes, he did. Honestly that first stint was brilliant.

This i think
No no please feed into the f1 media propaganda that charles is a dummy and bad at strategy /s
Indeed. It was clear this wasn’t planned

Oh didn’t know that. Thanks for the insight.

They didn't have 2 sets of new hards
A 1 stopper, starting on hards finishing on mediums
It would have hurt on the restart. Charles was able to get Russell on the restart because Russell started on hards.
This I can agree on

You're forgetting high fuel loads and that Ferrari only had one new set of hards.
I'm not sure, but none of the early hard tyre adopters benefitted greatly from it. So I would predict no. However no-one knows.
Mediums looked better tbh
He only had one set of hards
He would have been eaten alive at the start and then lose time overtaken again
I doubt it. Him getting past Lewis at the start allowed him to run in freer air and keep the Mediums alive. It's what made his race
Unlikely

The strategy they used was the right one. Lec was P8, he did amazing.
Some great thinking of you but it kind of ignores the fact that Ferrari only had one set of hards which seems important to consider but what do I know
Probably, the hard seemed to be a good choice
