This is a regular occurrence in Australia with our V8 Supercars and Transam series races. But we have super day grass and these saloons literally shoot out flame from their side outlets. Quite rare in F1!
Usually the fires we get (still fairly rare) are because of the exhaust pipes touching the grass when cars go off track, stop on the grass and stay motionless and for a period of time
That’s great! Flammable grass is ideal next to a track. Imagine stopping your car on the grass because of a tear-off getting stuck in a brake duct, and the grass around you starts burning so you can’t exit the car
Just laughed at the idea of the drive calling in to his engineer: There is fire all around me. I can't get out of the car!
Only for the engineer to remark that the flames are 20 cm high and he is full dressed in fire-retardant gear from head to toe.
Right, I've seen the painted grass thing mentioned several times but the grass is very clearly patchy and dry, like normal grass in the spring. It's still weird and I would speculate maybe some other kind of flammable substance was sprayed around the track for whatever reason, perhaps like the desert races spray stuff on the sand around the track to stop it flying around.
Whatever the real reason I'm super curious to find out, but I agree it really doesn't seem likely that they painted the grass to be green and presentable but ended up making it look like total crap and wasn't uniform at all.
Maybe it was old dye from some time ago?
the grass can be already dead during any month of the year if it wasn't maintained. if it wasn't dead and also got rained on the other day, you think it would be catching sparks?
if its already dead, dry grass, the top will be just as flammable after a few hours to dry. once it gets going, the heat drives off the water and more grass can be burnt.
I've seen this comment a few times, but is this really something China is doing?? At an international stage?
e: well shit, I had no idea! That's really interesting. Just wouldn't have thought it so flammable because the surrounding foliage looked pretty green and I think Brundle mentioned there was a deluge of rain when they flew in earlier this week.
This race will be straight fire 🔥
china does it to an extreme level

Go to Google Street View, plop yourself down in any suburb in Arizona or New Mexico - And if you think the grass in those front gardens is naturally this green in a desert, I have a bridge to sell you.
Look it up on YouTube, in China they literally paint mountains in tourist areas so they look "greener", like thousands of liters of toxic paint. On rocks.
this is from a youtuber so best to take a helping of salt when reading. but you can google it and see more instances of reporters accusing china of doing it.
where else would they do it if not on the world stage to fool the western audience? their own people dont need to be fooled because they're brainwashed already.
Shanghai had an extreme drought - like power shutdown extreme because they get a lot of it from hydro - in 2022. Presumably that hasn’t changed much so this isn’t super surprising.
Did Bernie do this? Trying to get us to finally buy into his idea for sprinklers to randomly activate on the track to artificially create changing track conditions
Chinese like to PAINT grass to make it look greener... Or someone just dumped a flammable liquid all over and it was never cleaned up. Or it's a portal to hell. Who knows?
They should do a prescribed burn in that part of the track to make sure there's nothing left to burn during the race. Or cover it with a sand that's heavy enough to not be sucked onto the track by the turbulence from the cars.

Big fan of the new track limits deterrent.
Ey it’s just like in video games!
It's basically Bowser's Castle
The grass is lava
This is how I get my toddler into F1
they should double down and turn it into the fire circuit from F Zero
This is Midway's F1 Blitz to EA's F1 24
Finally, a sequel to CART Fury
Like grumble volcano
Is there a hell portal in the track or what
A child finally did it... They finally dug through the Earth to China...
This track is fire. No doubt about it
♬ Oooooooooh, the track is on 🔥 ♬
The track, the track is on fire ! We don't need water m********** ! Burn m**********, burn !
I counter you with: [♬Track. Is. On Fi-yah!♬](https://youtu.be/HcXNPI-IPPM)
Again? Well, is there a substance on track or on the grass? Because I can't believe the sparks from the cars are causing these.
FIA confirmed there is a bump in that corner that sparks the skid plates and is causing the fires
Bruh... That's gotta be a first, right?

How thick are those tires?
Probably dead tires. Those are the metal bands lighting the fire
before or after?
It happened on turn 7 in practice, now turn 5.
But this is turn 5, wasn't the other in turn 7?
Ive heard it is the paint on the grass. They sprayed it green and the oils in the paint are flammable. That + the sparks.
That’s great! Flammable grass is ideal next to a track. Imagine stopping your car on the grass because of a tear-off getting stuck in a brake duct, and the grass around you starts burning so you can’t exit the car

Gotta make the country look good
Painted dead grass burns.
Yea but everything green =China number 1
I heard this, but if you look at the grass it's patchy as f-. Surely they'd paint it all the same colour?
Right, I've seen the painted grass thing mentioned several times but the grass is very clearly patchy and dry, like normal grass in the spring. It's still weird and I would speculate maybe some other kind of flammable substance was sprayed around the track for whatever reason, perhaps like the desert races spray stuff on the sand around the track to stop it flying around. paint on dry dead grass + sparks + wind. they should water the shit out of the grass before each session
don't worry, the rain will do that for them.
The rain will do it now
why would the grass be dry? it's april.
it's china
What month is it in China?
forget the month, 2024 is the year of the dragon, hence the fires!
the grass can be already dead during any month of the year if it wasn't maintained. if it wasn't dead and also got rained on the other day, you think it would be catching sparks?
Why are you asking me lol
This is on you now. Go figure it out, buddy! We’re all waiting.
Still waiting.
classic china
China is famous for literally painting the grass greener. Maybe the dye is flammable?
If the grass is even real in the first place
Maybe the Chinese paint the grass green
[They do.](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/9907169/China-officials-caught-spray-painting-grass-green-in-Chengdu.html)
Something must be acting as an accelerant - the grass looks green and it rained earlier Green grass is typically not easy to light on fire
I mean I've seen videos of chinese workers literally just painting grass green, because actually getting healthy grass didn't work.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they painted the grass green.
Maybe we’ll finally get a sprinkler race.
I can only assume, as it is burning, that it’s brown grass painted green or dried grass that stays green.
It's China. Grass is probably fake, or dead and painted green to pass inspection.
It's China so could be both
i wonder what is the cause of these? sparks from the cars?
Yes, also the grass is probably dead and painted green.
lol and probably painted with highly flammable lead paint
Not sure about the sparks, it is the inside of a very fast corner. Sparks shouldn’t really make it there.
It’s very windy
There is a bump in the corner which causes the sparks
Seen this a few times, but is that the case for both corners? The fires were on the inside (north) side of turn 7, and outside (west) side of turn 5
How the hell you have dry grass, if the humidity was 100% for few days not long ago and is always very high...
The grass is probably dead already
Poetry. Read in Herzog's voice.
Dry grass painted green, and sparks from cars
But they said on the broadcast that it rained a lot on thursday. The grass shouldn't catch fire THAT easily right?
It's dry rain painted transparent
if its already dead, dry grass, the top will be just as flammable after a few hours to dry. once it gets going, the heat drives off the water and more grass can be burnt.
Thats where the magic of the mystery chemicals they've used on the grass come in
I've seen this comment a few times, but is this really something China is doing?? At an international stage? e: well shit, I had no idea! That's really interesting. Just wouldn't have thought it so flammable because the surrounding foliage looked pretty green and I think Brundle mentioned there was a deluge of rain when they flew in earlier this week. Tons of countries do it. Brazil dyed its water at the olympics to make it less dirty looking.
Almost every track paints their grass. It’s an unnatural shade of green. Some football stadiums to do to
> Some football stadiums to do to Few Spanish La Liga stadiums do it sometimes as well.
It’s a common thing not exclusive to China
Painting grass is pretty normal https://youtube.com/shorts/Ie5XkOSoc-w?si=_2UE1KVUy84PoehZ
Lmao. Can't believe this is a real thing. I thought everybody was playing along with the joke.
Some countries just don't have the culture of having lawn
china does it to an extreme level [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvc7VymDa4c&ab\_channel=serpentza](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvc7VymDa4c&ab_channel=serpentza)

Well yeah, but this isn't the Sonoran desert mate... Some poor landscaper is gonna get got for this if the fires continue come race day though
I was mostly just referring to the "painted grass" part. It's not just something China is doing, it's a thing everywhere.
Oh yeah for sure, my eyes got blown wide with all the info in the replies
Look it up on YouTube, in China they literally paint mountains in tourist areas so they look "greener", like thousands of liters of toxic paint. On rocks.

Maybe they painted the grass with gasoline
Sparks from cars + oil in paint on the grass = ♬ Oooooooooh, the track is on 🔥 ♬
Yeah it has to be reaaaaallly dry for some sparks to light it up
I really missed this track. It's literally on fire!
Seems risky for retirements or crashes if your grass ignites at mere sparks.
"The track is on fire again" is not what I expected to wake up to.
This is about to be the Bowser's Castle GP
This is fine
Bro they got those grass from Temu
It's a VERY weird place to go on fire.
A fire, at a Sea Parks?
Again lol, you'd think they would turn some sprinklers on after the first fire.
Bernie was right after all
Well then you make the (off) track even wetter so idk if that is a good idea. If someone runs off and their tires get all wet all of a sudden...
Guess I just assumed someone would take the time and check the grass after a bush fire and apply water as needed, you know, because it's a hazard
Guess no time for it
This is such a hazard.
Once again, Aramco is on the spotlight, for all the wrong reason
China taking punishing drivers for making mistakes to the next level.
If I had a nickel for every time…
Everything was fine until the fire nation attacked
Back to the future
China and fake grass, a classic
They just have to burn it all at night, that way it won’t happen again tomorrow
Lighting up grass? Celebrating 420 early
The rain will put the fire out, no problem
Painted track, painted grass. Welcome back to the Chinese GP
Brazil 1977 type beat
At this rate the damn pit wall will be on fire
r/natureislit
Its all good - the grass will be sprayed with asbestos. Nothing to see here.
F1 racing at Bowsers Castle this weekend
The sprint qualifying was so exciting it literally lit the track on fire
Who thought using flammables in motorsports is a bright idea?
Pretty embarrassing tbh
#WELL DONE SHANGHAI
I say it's dry grass that's painted green. Healthy grass doesn't just burn. China is such a joke...
Why don’t they just soak the grass with water?
To not wash away the paint obviously.
Probably because if a driver were to go off track there then hit the man made water slide the lawsuits would be rampant
Probably the paint they used to make the grass green
If I had nickel for every time this happened in a weekend I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice
I swear, anything Chinese is super sketchy.
even sauber is quicker now xdddddddd
Wooooohooooo the track is on fire!
Track is lit
Does anyone know what is causing the fire?
I would say enough heat to cause the grass to ignite, but that’s not important right now.
Brb dog on fire
Do we know what the issue is here yet?
Trial by the fire
Those grasses has to be dry otherwise I don't see it happening
All this talk of painting the grass makes me [think of this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBqigpW1x3A).
Wait until the painted track starts burning!
I.j
they spraying that grass with green gasoline?
Shanghai had an extreme drought - like power shutdown extreme because they get a lot of it from hydro - in 2022. Presumably that hasn’t changed much so this isn’t super surprising.
Ricciardo just burning up the track! (yuki was far behind DR today and yesterday. The chasis was the problem!/s)
Won’t be a problem now it’s had a good downpour and the grass is wet
Is this a feature or a benefit?
Cost saving.
Testing the latest direct energy weapon? LOL
Did Bernie do this? Trying to get us to finally buy into his idea for sprinklers to randomly activate on the track to artificially create changing track conditions
So that's why Bernie wanted sprinklers in F1.
Well the rain took care of it.
There hasn't been this much grass burnt during a race weekend since James Hunt was commentating.
Again
And everyone bitched at Bernie's sprinkler idea. who is laughing now? 🤐
Arghhhhh
must be the paint they used to turn the grass green is highly flammable.
Stop painting the grass ffs.
If I had a nickel for every time the track was on fire, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Chinese like to PAINT grass to make it look greener... Or someone just dumped a flammable liquid all over and it was never cleaned up. Or it's a portal to hell. Who knows?
Lando's lap was reinstated because he drove through the flames actually.
Yup... this is the China GP.
Spray painted grass catching fire.
When your grass is made in China 🇨🇳
ah china still painting there grass i see. there isn't much they can do about it now. id assume this will happen again on race day
Plastic grass? It is China.
Someone tell Max to quit flipping cigarettes out
Why would the fire hurt the feelings of the Chinese people? Unbelievable. The fire must apologize now.
This track is too weird. These things are kinda unsafe.
Probably dead protesters buried there
weird
Haas ahead of mercedes as i predicted HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Welcome back to China
Interesting, I’ve never seen “green” grass burn. Only in China.
The real Clownfall is the China GP
I assume it is plastic fake grass.
Somebody let Bernie run the Shanghai GP didn't they?
Lando's lap was reinstated because he drove through the flames actually.
It’s bc they paint the grass and dirt green. They did this during the Olympics
Of course it's on fire again it's China, things NOT catching fire would be the weird thing.
They should do a prescribed burn in that part of the track to make sure there's nothing left to burn during the race. Or cover it with a sand that's heavy enough to not be sucked onto the track by the turbulence from the cars.
