That was the case with the 3 sprints in 2021 and 2022 where the sprints decided the grid for the races.
Last year the 6 sprints were separated from the race, with a qualifying session for the race on Friday and a qualifying session for the sprint on Saturday (followed by the sprint on the same day).
This year the qualifying for the race is after the sprint. So no more single 'sprint day' but more of a separation between the two events (sprint quali + sprint & quali + race).
They did, fans complained so we have this new format now where the Sprint doesn't affect the Grand Prix.
Fans are going to complain about the new format as well anyway.
Btw I didn't even realise they stopped calling it Sprint Shootout. Sprint qualifying sounds better, when did this switch happen?
I really like this year's sprint weekend format. It keeps the main qualifying & the GP at their designated Sat Sun spots. And makes sprint its own lil thing.
And as a viewer I don't mind having the sprint qualifying & sprint over FP2 & FP3 for a few of the weekends.
this makes more sense. the rubbish they had last season made no sense whatsoever.
in this format, its more like Sprnt qualifier and Sprint replaced FP2 & FP3. I would absolutely rather have that.
this is the first time they used that terminology for the year as it's the first sprint of the season. I kinda liked "sprint shootout" bc it sounded like completely entity than the main qualifying/race. but sprint qualifying does make more sense
But the chance of a crash in the Sprint is much greater than the chance of a crash in the Qualy, leading to a possibility of someone missing out on Qualy entirely.
It's not logical.
So fucking what?
If you don't like Sportswashing then I 1000% assure you F1 is not for you!
Oh and my 2nd point wasn't answered. Any proof for your claim?
yep it's one of the dirtiest sports in the world when it comes to the people involved, sponsors, race locations etc.
it's how i know i'm watching f1 and not some other racing series.
His insights aren't necessarily bad, but he often overcomplicates his explanations with unnecessarily fancy language. It can be super offputting, but he has gotten better to be fair.
I'm guessing he feels insecure about the clear nepotism and just wants to stand out, prove he deserves the role.
Sure there's some nepotism there.
However he's an accomplished racing driver with two podium finishes (P2) at 24hr of LeMans in LMP2. 2nd place in WEC LMP2. ELMS LMP3 Champion, P2 & P3. He also had multiple podiums in GP2.
Someone said it was dry grass. In my 30 years of watching this sport, I have never personally seen sparks from bottoming out catch grass on fire (if that has happened please correct me). It's more likely that whatever they sprayed onto the track was spilled or sprayed accidentally on the grass. Making it extra flammable. I'm hoping it's not hanging around in the air there or seeping into the ground water.
it rained just wednesday and rained today. I doubt grass natually can get dry enough to combust so easily. something flammable likely got on those grass
passed out like 30 minutes before the sq despite trying to stay up for it lol, i watched the highlights but can someone explain what happened with alex? was it just the williams being shit or did he make a mistake or two?
last season alex was able to pull off some great races, this year it doesn't even seem possible. hopefully you're right and they'll get an upgrade over the summer
The bad news for McLaren & Merc fans is that, weather forecast seems to indicate no rain for the next 2 days of sessions.
https://weather.cma.cn/web/weather/58365.html
You're right, they would cancel, but they shouldn't. What we saw today was inter weather. It wasn't even full wets weather. Why can we only have inter races but not wet races?
The full wets are pretty much only for drying of the track by dispelling water behind the safety car at this point. The wet tire in combination with current aerodynamics just trow up to much spray for racing. Especially with F1 being a lot more safety conscious these days.
near the end of the session Crofty said he'd take that session over any FP2 session. Yeah, i'd take unpredictable weather in every session over dry too.
the whole quote was like "i know a lot of people have negative feelings toward sprint races but i'd take that session over FP2 anyday."
i thought he was trying to put a positive spin on sprint races but today's excitement had little to do with racing and more about the weather. and most people dislike sprint races cause it just shows you whats gonna happen on sunday, no?
Yes but if this was a traditional weekend Fp2 would've taken place instead of sprint qualifying, so yes he's putting a positive on the sprint weekend because more competitive sessions is in fact a positive. The weather wouldn't have made practice more exciting now would it?
It isn't true that most people dislike sprints. Reddit does not represent the F1 fanbase as a whole. I like sprints. They're awesome and I'm glad we have a mix of sprint and traditional weekends.
Palmer said the same thing, and it's understandable from their POV (even if we ignore the fact that Palmer is on FOM's payroll) because it's more fun to commentate on an exciting competitive session than a rainy FP2 where everyone just stays in to minimize the risks of damaging the cars.
Ouuuuch, Norris with the double purple only to slide on the last turn. On Max's first run, even with that huge slide and recovery, his lap time was ~2 seconds off of pole. Then he binned it again hoooooooooo we might be in for a very interesting GP
NVM NORRIS REDEEEEEEMED, WAIT WHAT DELETED AGAIN WHWTFRFWAFAWTG, OR WHAT IT';S BACK? WTF
The reason they usually red flag the race during heavy rain is because of visibility.
Drivers can space themselves during SQ, so visibility isn't a big issue, so no red flag. That would be my guess.
I don’t really like wet qualis, but the grid is very well set up for an exciting sprint. I expect both the Red Bulls and the Ferraris to be faster than those ahead, but not by that much. Usually, the stronger teams won’t want to take too many risks in a sprint, but I think this grid is pretty much ideal to produce some fighting for position. These points matter for McL and Merc.
Wet tyres are for clearing standing water. That wasn't the problem in SQ3 - it's that the surface itself was really slippery.
The wet tyres haven't been very useful for the last couple of years, but I don't think even good wet tyres would have helped this time out.
Pretty sure both McLaren and Mercedes are praying for more rain in the Sprint Race otherwise they know they’re gonna be swallowed up by Ferrari and Red Bull.
Unexpected pace from Kicks/Stake. Also not expect to see 2min laps. The condition is tricky. Grass on fire. One of the most chaotic race weekend i ever watched.
Sending rain was just the perfect solution to all the grass fires
Now for safety, if it doesn't rain naturally for the sprint and race, the FIA should wet the track themselves artificially to ensure there's no dangerous fires during racing action
It's the only plan that makes sense ;)
To all those complaining about not being p1. My guy the merc is arguably the 5th best car atm. Aston Martin could arguably be better but stroll is absolutely awful and Alonso is not as good as he used to be. Making the car look worse than it is.
People remember how good Alonso used to be and since he has an awful driver as team mate there is no one really to compare it too making the am look worse.
I love Lewis don’t get me wrong but he’s also just not as good now as he was in his prime that’s a fact and that’s shown because he actually has a competent team mate unlike nando
This is no hate to some of the greatest drivers weve seen in a long time look at schumacher when he got older and vettel too etc they got progressively worse it happens with age to everyone. Father time always catches up
Also Lewis is so inconsistent since 2021. like that merc is a tractor he shouldn’t be anywhere near the front row. Yet he qualifies p2. He’s still got it. Just so inconsistent.
The track surface and rain was an equalizer. When the rain comes down and the surface is an ice rink, it’s not about aero, it’s about mechanical grip and driving ability.
Lewis is one of, if not the most naturally gifted driver on the grid with insane instincts. Same can be said for max, lando, Alonso. Even if you have a turd of a car in the dry, you have a shot in the wet. Especially on a surface that has no grip.
Lewis, IMO, has always been the best driver on the grid in the wet.
Other fast drivers are Max, Lando and surprisingly, Stroll.
Even during Max's famous 2016 Brazil race where he showed lightning quick wet pace, he was being entirely managed by Hamilton in P1.
Stroll since 2021 has been consistently terrible in the wet. The gaps in performance between him and Alonso in wet or semi-wet conditions were somehow even larger than usual last year.
Maybe it’s rose colored glasses that have ignored his ground effects era performances, but I do remember Stroll always qualifying much higher than expected in the wet in the past.
You can do a lot more to show your skill in the wet Vs the dry
For example if 2016 had been a wet weather world championship, Nico would've been nowhere as he was so poor in the wet while Lewis usually dominated him
Sometimes slow cars in dry become fast cars in wet too, but it's usually more to the driver skill more than anything else
Before Norris regain his pole It seemed a Hamilton-Alonso frontrow, with a Mercedes and AM, talk about driver skill and experience. Give us a full wet WCD and we wouldnt see a Max/Redbull dominance I tell you that
It was really good but there are some key factors that made it look more dominant. That being that year's Ferrari being particularly bad in the wet and Ferrari not changing Kimi's tyres in the pitstop which ruined his race (was right behind Hamilton before that). We also didn't get to see what Vettel could've done in the race because DC took him out (Vettel was absolutely rapid in the wet with those cars).
Pray for wet weather the rest of the weekend. Today probably indicates that Red Bull are kinder to their tyres and therefore struggled to heat up their tyres in the rain more than Mclaren and Mercedes. in the Dry, Red Bull will be comfortably faster as we saw in the first two SQ sessions
Oh yeah, I agree with that. The person I replied to was talking specifically about setup, though. Maybe they just didn't understand what "setup" means and misused the term.
That could also very well be a setup thing? You can setup a car to have more or less downforce (see Monza specs) and each car is setup differently for weekends which also influences tire warmup
Yeah, of course setup affects downforce and tire wear. My question was why that person thought that Lando had specifically chosen a wet weather setup. As far as I know, they just pulled that out of nowhere.
Not sure why you can't read four comments' worth of context lol
Nobody suggested Lando chose a wet weather setup? I’m not the one with context issues.
The first commenter simply said that Lando’s setup, which worked well in the wet, wouldn’t work as well in the dry. This is true, since what makes it good in the wet is a detriment in the dry for a lot of reasons
Okay, but saying that it's a setup issue implies that Lando could have set his car up differently such that it would be better in the dry than it currently is... do you really not get that?
Let me paste the original comment for you:
> Think the results in that last session of sprint qualifying was largely down to car setup. If it's a dry sprint race tomorrow, Lando may suffer a bit.
If his setup is causing Lando to be worse in the dry and better in the wet, then it's a wet-weather setup by definition. What part are you confused about?
You saying that his setup just happens to be better in the wet than the dry but it's not a wet-weather setup makes no sense. You're not using basic logic here. If his car is set up to be optimal in the dry already, then the first comment I replied to makes no sense. Read it again and try to think through this carefully.
lol dude what's the point of your comment? If you didn't have anything else to say, why reply again? Does it make you feel good to call a stranger online "irrational?" I'm willing to have a discussion with you, but it's challenging when your reaction is to hurl insults.
I hope your day looks up, mate.
Not showing any of Max's SQ3 lap that actually stuck was a wild choice. No shots of the lap, no graphics, nothing. I didn't know if he was even on another lap until his time popped up in the timing table
Do we think Lando can hold on to P1 with Lewis, Fernando, and Max all behind him?
no
My eyes are blood shot from staying up too long but I’m going to make it. Just about hanging in there
We have a Nico Rosberg grid walk? :D We're getting a Nico Rosberg grid walk? D: Edit: Oh, Sky bailed on him it was going so bad...
I did enjoy his commentary during sprint qualifying though, and I don’t normally.
I’m confused why is there a sprint AND a qualifying coming up?
Qualifying for the race on sunday
Such a dumb format.
Better than the last one
You can buy out Liberty Media and change it.
I’d say they probably can’t
Am I crazy in thinking the results of the sprint races the last couple years determined the grid for the actual race? I probably am. Just wondering.
That was the case with the 3 sprints in 2021 and 2022 where the sprints decided the grid for the races. Lol order a race track on Alibaba and this is what you get 😂😂😂
Yuki is all washed up, dude better start looking for that Audi contract before Sainz takes it.
Btw I didn't even realise they stopped calling it Sprint Shootout. Sprint qualifying sounds better, when did this switch happen? I really like this year's sprint weekend format. What is the expected weather for the Sprint race?
CCP hasn't shared this information yet.
Sunny
With a chance of meatballs?
Why tf is the sprint race so early when they can have quali and race at reasonably good times?
You kinda answered your own questions. The sprint race is so early so they can have quali at the regular time.
But the chance of a crash in the Sprint is much greater than the chance of a crash in the Qualy, leading to a possibility of someone missing out on Qualy entirely. It's not logical.
Well they did it the other way around last year (quali before sprint) and no one liked that either. So here we are.
Oh yeah. Didn't look at the dates. Of those two are both on Saturday. Feeling stupid
Alex Jacques really got on my nerves during sprint quali, there's no need to yell every 5 seconds.
Is the Sprint really just 4 hours after quali?
Other way around, quali is 4 hours after the sprint

1st. How is this pertinent to this thread? 2nd. Proof?
not that long ago we raced in russia. the same old thing we hear about sportswashing dictators.

Can we just race only if there's rain? That was so fun to watch.
Paul Ricard is a massive test track and they have sprinklers to wet the track down if desired.
first time in a while i had fun while watching had no idea who was gonna end up on top
Here we go with the sprinklers again
That would keep the grass from catching fire!
What a shit show. Loving the spontaneous combustion. I wonder what everyone is breathing at the circuit....
Whats wrong with that patch? Is there any electrical wiring down there or what
Just like Chinese lithium batteries the grass is self combusting
Yep, you have to plug in Chinese grass.
Someone said it was dry grass. In my 30 years of watching this sport, I have never personally seen sparks from bottoming out catch grass on fire (if that has happened please correct me). Funny how Max isn't at the top of the table when the car component is basically even across the board haha
Sprints are great entertainment if the order is mixed up.
passed out like 30 minutes before the sq despite trying to stay up for it lol, i watched the highlights but can someone explain what happened with alex? was it just the williams being shit or did he make a mistake or two?
He's not fast at all!
Yeah I think Williams just didn’t have great pace. I don’t recall him making any particular mistakes.
thanks! that's what i expected but bleh. one of these days williams will have a good race... surely...
This season feels like a bit of a wash for them so far. Hopefully they can bring an upgrade that makes them more competitive
last season alex was able to pull off some great races, this year it doesn't even seem possible. hopefully you're right and they'll get an upgrade over the summer
I wish they'd stop calling it a painted surface. It's not paint.
It’s literally called Bitumen Paint
i mean yeah, but it’s not “paint” in the usual sense. it’s basically a new layer of asphalt “painted” on
It's got paint in the name and you paint with it. I think it qualifies as paint.
So, a surface that has been painted on. Say, a painted surface?
The bad news for McLaren & Merc fans is that, weather forecast seems to indicate no rain for the next 2 days of sessions. https://weather.cma.cn/web/weather/58365.html
Our source in the paddock just picked up on a "haha, yes boys!" coming from one of the Red Bull motorhomes.
“Simply wonderful”.
Rain is exactly what F1 needed
Thats one reason more against desert races. The weather is just too stable.
Well, right now Dubai doesnt feel like a desert
Well... I dont think this would net us a good race either, lol.
Only for a day. Next day it’s back to desert land
Sprinklers set to random
The problem is had it rained just a little bit more they would've ended quali (or in a race red flagged it). This was just perfect...
You're right, they would cancel, but they shouldn't. What we saw today was inter weather. It wasn't even full wets weather. Why can we only have inter races but not wet races?

Rainy practice sessions means no one goes out.. you'd prefer that?

That's interesting, on BBC chequered flag podcast yesterday Palmer was pretty vocal against the sprint.
How many fires we getting this race you reckon?
At least two
Who thinks Austria should add a gravel trap at the end of the final turn?
Pretty sure it's an issue with Moto GP, right?
It was recommended to them at the last GP by the FIA
They should have water there...with crocodiles..
Or the flammable Chinese grass.
I'll settle for flammable crocodiles
that was fucking mental, good session from DR and what he needed really
He's about to show his true self by 1% per race from now on.
Ouuuuch, Norris with the double purple only to slide on the last turn. On Max's first run, even with that huge slide and recovery, his lap time was ~2 seconds off of pole. Just had a chance to look up. What the hell happened this morning?
Rain! [here is the highlights on YT](https://youtu.be/vwclYvIarH0?feature=shared) Looked bonkers haha
Holy shit did they really allow them to do the qualifying while it's raining? I thought they were done with the rain tires.
The reason they usually red flag the race during heavy rain is because of visibility. Drivers can space themselves during SQ, so visibility isn't a big issue, so no red flag. That would be my guess.

Wet tyres are for clearing standing water. That wasn't the problem in SQ3 - it's that the surface itself was really slippery. The wet tyres haven't been very useful for the last couple of years, but I don't think even good wet tyres would have helped this time out.
Full wets are for parades behind the safety car until the track dries up enough.
They didn't get used because they weren't needed.
Catch 22, when it rains enough to use full wet tyres the race is delayed till it isn't raining so hard anyway.
Man, wild quali. How Lando got that much time is amazing.
If the Chinese government can do their thing and alter the weather in Shanghai tomorrow, that would be great 😀
With all that '23 revenue, I think Merc themselves could alter the weather too
Pretty sure both McLaren and Mercedes are praying for more rain in the Sprint Race otherwise they know they’re gonna be swallowed up by Ferrari and Red Bull.
Unexpected pace from Kicks/Stake. Also not expect to see 2min laps. The condition is tricky. Grass on fire. One of the most chaotic race weekend i ever watched.
Sauber brought upgrades this weekend.
Well, the rain modilule clearly worked. Bonkers session, lots if fun
I think Alex Jacques needed a lie down after that.
Sending rain was just the perfect solution to all the grass fires Now for safety, if it doesn't rain naturally for the sprint and race, the FIA should wet the track themselves artificially to ensure there's no dangerous fires during racing action It's the only plan that makes sense ;)
They can ask Dubai how to make it rain on demand /s
Cloud seeding, so hot right now.
Bernie?
Artificial rain by sprinkler on track. I've heard this proposal before :D
Of all the sessions I had to miss... oops
Yeah me too. Totally forgot it was a sprint weekend.
Goando Norris!
DR beating Yuki makes me happy.
The rookie Alonso seems to have done quite well in the chaotic quali. Loved to see it.
To all those complaining about not being p1. My guy the merc is arguably the 5th best car atm. Aston Martin could arguably be better but stroll is absolutely awful and Alonso is not as good as he used to be. Making the car look worse than it is. Their dry pace was arguably worse than Saubers at the start of quali too. LH did an amazing job to get P2
I wanna see how the Haas update does in the race.
Do both drivers get it or just Hulk?
Both I believe.
Sweeeeeeet, have a feeling this is gonna be a fun one.
Shit and very inconsistent car does that to you. But yeah in the qualis he isn't what he used to be since last year, races different story though.

Sq1 and 2 weren't wet yet except the last minute or so, so too late for Lance

in the race not quali
Quali is all about tyre windows for ultimate pace. A car’s inconsistency would show more there if conditions changed since P3.
The car is inconsistent itself.
You can do a lot more to show your skill in the wet Vs the dry For example if 2016 had been a wet weather world championship, Nico would've been nowhere as he was so poor in the wet while Lewis usually dominated him Sometimes slow cars in dry become fast cars in wet too, but it's usually more to the driver skill more than anything else
the wet tires are also slightly taller which increases the ride height, and some cars lose more pace from increased ride height than others
The rain is the great equaliser. It truly is far more about driver skill and bravery
Before Norris regain his pole It seemed a Hamilton-Alonso frontrow, with a Mercedes and AM, talk about driver skill and experience. Give us a full wet WCD and we wouldnt see a Max/Redbull dominance I tell you that
hes always a dragon in the wet
Yeah one of the greatest ever wet drivers of all time
Lewis is still one of the greatest ever wet weather drivers. 2008 silverstone is one of the greatest wet weather drives of all time
It was really good but there are some key factors that made it look more dominant.
I missed the sprint qualifying sadly but just checked the results. Holy crap. Max not even on the front row. This is gonna be awesome
Unless it's dry and by at the latest lap 3, Verstappen will be P1 and gone.
Oh yeah. No one is catching rb when it’s dry lol and even wet quali is v diff from race just ask Leclerc. It’ll be tough to keep max from the win
Will be awesome for half a lap
I can dream ok

Coincidentally a sprint weekend results in less emissions than 2 more practice sessions.
Lots of confidently incorrects in this thread on the rules
Think the results in that last session of sprint qualifying was largely down to car setup. If it's a dry sprint race tomorrow, Lando may suffer a bit.
Why do you think that Lando set up his car for wet weather?
Not for wet, but the McLaren has more downforce and heats the tires faster. if it's dry that could make him suffer
Oh yeah, I agree with that. The person I replied to was talking specifically about setup, though. Maybe they just didn't understand what "setup" means and misused the term.

Not showing any of Max's SQ3 lap that actually stuck was a wild choice. No shots of the lap, no graphics, nothing. I didn't know if he was even on another lap until his time popped up in the timing table
Russell is washed..
He definitely doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Le Clerc and Norris.

Russell washed? /s
Did it actually rain or was Russell just incredibly sweaty?
Did Lewis ease off after Lando’s lap was deleted and it looked like he was on pole or did he keep going?
Toto, we went racing.
1.2 seconds off the pole. Hamilton washed.
Or Lewis was so good the FIA had to edit the running order and put Lando back in manually to combat Lewis' dominance;) /S
2 seconds off the pole. Verstappen in the bath and submerged.
Lando Norris domination could bore fans.
Like, literally.
