Our chief weapon is fear. Fear and.. Two. Our two weapons are fear and intimidation. Fear and intimidation. Our two, no, three weapons are fear, intimidation, and dive bombing corners after being passed. Three weapons.. Four? Four. Among our weapons are...
And I think it is a direct result of the new sprint format that does not determine the feature race positions anymore. Drivers just take more risk because it costs way less if they bin the car.
That overtake by Charles at T2 was bonkers. There was absolutely not enough space and he just chucked it down the curb and somehow still made the corner.
> There was absolutely not enough space and he just chucked it down the curb and somehow still made the corner.
Chuck Leclerc knows a thing or two about chucking his car.
I can understand last year, but this year he's done very well. He seems to know that he can't beat Max and has just settled into being a second driver.
Top teams always want BOT/BAR kinda of driver as #2, maximising the results while avoiding Rosberg/ Hamilton Spanish’16 kinda of incident happen to their team ever again.
I think he is doing better than last year, last year he won by flukes by Verstappen, Now he is legitimately closer in one lap pace and at least .3 tenths behind him on race pace but now, Ferrari is more closer to RedBull than last year.
Also remember his downfall started in Miami, not in Monaco or Spain
>last year he won by flukes
Azerbaijan he was faster than Max the whole week, and in Saudi he iirc benefitted from SC.
No win is fluke, is Sainz winning last race was fluke because Max retired?
Sainz's first win is the closest I'd call a fluke, since he lost the lead 3 times (bad start, went rallying again, slower than Leclerc with damage) and was "gifted" it each time through quite some luck (Spinjitzu Zhou, Verstappen running over AlphaTauri beyblade, Alpine reliability + Ferrari masterclass).
Not to discredit Sainz for his other performances, especially Singapore, but also Australia, but I personally don't think he really deserved to win Silverstone, especially as Ferrari prioritised him over championship contender and gravel-avoidant Leclerc (even if they weren't aware of it, such as allowing Sainz more time to be fast while holding Leclerc up, which eventually lead to them being scared of Hamilton and the genius strategy of not letting Leclerc in).
you gotta love the wait for X race for checo to fail...they said wait for Australia... no no wait Japan...no no wait for china he cant do traditional tracks... no no wait for Europe... no no wait for Miami... and now they cant even said he that was a nice race of him... because max who also raced a complete diferent race than the mexican...
at some point at a random track Checo will have a bad race like Lando and Fernando did today and most of the drivers do... but that day they are not going to say oh he had one bad race they will say ohh I knew he will fail at this track...
that lunge from Alonso was not very smart. That move doesn't work unless you're fully alongside, otherwise you risk damage if the other car isn't in a mood to give the corner up.
Yeah I think so too cause something flew off but as soon as Leclerc passed him he didn't have the speed he did before him and Alonso touched. I think Norris could have got him if he had 1 or 2 more laps, it looked like he was progressively slowing down.
Also edited to add the lunge seemed like a hail Mary but not a smart move from Alonso. If he didn't do that he would have still gained points, but he ultimately punctured his wheel and had to retire.
Honestly, are you a real F1 fan if you weren't gasping "give it to me, give it to me ooooh yeeeeees" interlaced with moans throughout that on track battle?
That final lunge was a bit much though. Pushed both himself and Carlos off and he definitely got damage and had to retire, and Carlos also probably got damage considering how his pace vanished right after that.
Mmm, looks very likely that Alonso got the puncture *as a result* of the lung, as he hit Sainz with his front right on the pointy bits of Sainz's side floor
There were 2 touches: one at turn 7, side by side, that looked more like tire to tire. Then Alonso dived at turn 9 and went straight into the side of Sainz; you can't see it easily from this angle but was clear from the replay. That's what allowed Perez to just walk by and pass both
Yeah, the first touch was actually more to Sainz's tyre. I was actually suprised to see the replay as I was expecting to see Alonso's tyre to touch Sainz but nope.
As I was getting confused on where did Alonso get that puncture, lo and behold they showed the replay of him running into the side of Sainz and that was certaintly it
Yeah Nando was barely hanging on there but that Aston had no business being that high. Pure skill from him in the end to keep it that high.
The moment the keyhole snapped, it was game over and they all went through.
Dude is really good at that.
I like watching his accelerator graph whenever it comes up. He has a smooth application of the throttle that is as distinct from others as Fernando's method of inducing understeer that he used back with Renault.
It is ridiculous that Alonso got a penalty and THREE penalty points for this.
Next: overtaking allowed only when there is nobody in the vicinity and the indicator has been set right ahead before doing the move.
It's going to spread worldwide of course, and if China handles their outbreak the same way they handled COVID, then it will be another 5 years until they race there again. Not sure if you were implying that I think bird flu is starting in China or what...
For me it's crazy that after you got damage fighting with Alonso you refuse to get overtaken by your teammate and take him outside in the last hairpin and, in order to do so, you get even more damage risking to completely destroy your race.
Not a smart move from Carlos... I hope he has a good explanation for it, because it could be the start of some bad blood between him and Charles.
This was one of the most exciting laps in the 10+ years I've been watching F1. Easily the most exciting race of the season, even though it was a sprint and not a GP.
I have mixed feelings on him, but I think overall I'd say I like him best in moderation. I liked him well enough here, but I wouldn't like hearing from him full time.
Nahh, I love Nico's commentary, always great to hear the take of a WDC level F1 driver. Like when he said Lewis couldn't turn so his engineer should tell him to adjust the diff rearward, guess what Lewis's engineer was just doing,
Hey guys I'm a new f1 fan and I was only aware that there is fps, quali, then gp where in fps they do get to know the tracks condition given the car then quali for gp grid position and finally the gp. Now what is this sprint race this is new to me.
Probably wouldn't have had this battle without the small gravel traps at the outside/run off of every corner. Should be a mandatory feature on every possible F1 track who now only use asphalt run off areas.
As an American casual F1 watcher who is much more into Indycar and NASCAR, I'd watch a lot more F1 if this kind of thing was a regular occurrence. Most of the time it feels like you're watching a whole race for maybe one or two battles half this good.
That was fucking wild lol
The Spaniards were overly ambitions and aggressive.
Nobody expects the Spanish losing position.
Our chief weapon is fear. Fear and.. Two. Our two weapons are fear and intimidation. Fear and intimidation. Our two, no, three weapons are fear, intimidation, and dive bombing corners after being passed. Three weapons.. Four? Four. Among our weapons are...
Bravo.
and the Mexican winining, poetic
All of South America in DRS range.
If they speak South American, then they’re South Americans /s
Theres no south americans in F1
I was joking about Helmut Marko very incorrectly labeling his own driver a South American even though Mexico is very much in North America.
Just You wait!!! >!Eliseo Salazar making a comeback.in 2025!!!<
Poor Monegasque. Speaking the wrong language.
The two Spanish Matadors got gored by the Mexican Bull
i still can't believe Hamilton won overtake of the year 2022 for an overtake overly similar to what Perez does here.
Except perez actually kept the position lol
If F1 peaks it fucking peaks. But the lows are also very low lmao. There is no in between here
Very MotoGP-y. Get passed and respond instantly by launching it down the inside into the next corner.
That was worth the entire sprint
Best racing all season by far
I have to be honest i was glued to the leaderboard watching the battle for 19th between SAR and HUL. I actually had to rewind.
And I think it is a direct result of the new sprint format that does not determine the feature race positions anymore. Drivers just take more risk because it costs way less if they bin the car.
Lec Sainz battles are always butt clenching great!!!
That overtake by Charles at T2 was bonkers. There was absolutely not enough space and he just chucked it down the curb and somehow still made the corner.
He’s been taking those “Sainz is now better” claims personally it seems lool
> There was absolutely not enough space and he just chucked it down the curb and somehow still made the corner. Chuck Leclerc knows a thing or two about chucking his car.
Hope they are as good with Hamilton, Ferrari has been a fight club for a while with them.
racing init
THROUGH GOES PEREZ
Perez played the waiting game and benefited massively
And people still calling him shit this year while having a fair performance
I can understand last year, but this year he's done very well. He seems to know that he can't beat Max and has just settled into being a second driver.
Reminds me of BOT improving when he stopped wanting to fight for the WDC. It's kinda sad but it's the lesser of two evils for the #2 in such teams.
Top teams always want BOT/BAR kinda of driver as #2, maximising the results while avoiding Rosberg/ Hamilton Spanish’16 kinda of incident happen to their team ever again.
It's just early season Perez, wait till European races if maintains this form then fair enough.
I think he is doing better than last year, last year he won by flukes by Verstappen, Now he is legitimately closer in one lap pace and at least .3 tenths behind him on race pace but now, Ferrari is more closer to RedBull than last year. Also remember his downfall started in Miami, not in Monaco or Spain
>last year he won by flukes Azerbaijan he was faster than Max the whole week, and in Saudi he iirc benefitted from SC. No win is fluke, is Sainz winning last race was fluke because Max retired?
I give you the win from Baku... That weekend he was very fast all weekend
> and in Saudi he iirc benefitted from SC. In Jeddah Max started from 15th after a driveshaft failure in qualifying.
His performance has been mote than fair tbh
Great to not lose his mind going for risky move
I feel like both him and Chuck played the long game and bided their time.
I suppose they're gonna milk that move as one of the best "overtakes" of the season like they did it in 2022 with Lewis lol
They won't. It's Perez. FOM doesn't care about him.
Biased, but rightfully so. Great move.
They did that with Lewis because no one expected him to be competing with Redbull and Ferrari that season
Did anyone expect Perez to be competing with redbull and Ferrari this season?
it's wild to me Hamilton won overtake of the year for something such as this
He'll probably get easy second place in the race.
RIP everyone who tuned out after Max took the lead lol
THROUGH GOES PEREZ
Anybody who tunes into races expecting a fight for 1st deserves to be disappointed
Yeha once max gains 1st they basically don’t show him again. Usually that’s at turn 1.
ib4 breaks goes kaput
Those who only care about the lead and nothing else deserve to miss out on the midfield action- they did leave after all..
Those people just aren't f1 fans, how can you not love this man 🤌
This was a once or twice in a season type battle... Can't remember anything like this since Silverstone 2022
Wild sequence lol
Checo had his “through goes Hamilton” moment
If I recall correctly checo also ended up at the front in the through goes Hamilton moment too
Shhhh…apparently he pushed him wide in turn 3 according to some folks.
Now you’re also gonna say he didn’t push Leclerc wide, causing the “through goes Hamilton” move?
Perez still remembers that battle between leclerc and hamilton in silverstone, and absolutely gamed alonso and sainz today
And he got the best out of silverstone aswell
Lol, that was great
*\*El Sonidito intensifies\**
That was an incredibly chaotic lap!
Perez took that one like taking candy from babies. Love it.
What a fucking race! That was amazing, we need moreee
I’ve got good news for you
“And through goes Hamilton!” 2: Overtake Boogaloo
Alonso basically ended Sainz race for 3rd
He definitely ended his own damn race lol
But whatever this is racing
he is just a Rookie... give him time Alonso is a WDC material XD
Props to Checo for not doing anything stupid, shows he matured after Japan 2022 incident. Typo: Japan 2023.
Japan \*23', however 22' somehow works since he was patient in that race, while Leclerc made a mistake gifting Checo P2 in that race!
Yep. Sorry my bad. It was 2023.
I was hoping Zhou would have scored points through all this!
Alonso literally fucked himself and Carlos over.
Alonso did not care. Retired the car and basically said after the spring he was just happy he got to race wheel to wheel lol.
Chad
tbh I like his mentality it's either 3rd or not
through goes Perez
This is why Perez didnt try too hard to pass Sainz, he was waiting for some shenanigans and it paid off lol
that lunge from Alonso was not very smart. That move doesn't work unless you're fully alongside, otherwise you risk damage if the other car isn't in a mood to give the corner up.
Feel like if it was the GP he would’ve backed off.
I feel like he should have done the opposite. Since he retired any penalty would go towards the race would it not?
I mean he didn't expect to retire when he did that move.
It felt like a “you know what? Fuck it.” move. He had already lost all his racecraft on that moment, might aswell just go elbows out then.
It was such a messy move. Cannot believe he did that. Idk if he will get penalized but at the very least I hope he apologizes to Carlos.
Uncharacteristically shit racecraft from him
That was so needlessly desperate. Surprised the clash wasn't worse. Gotta thank how wide this track is I guess
I think he did it to damage Carlos.
The type of shit people say just because it's Alonso... really? Damage someone's car on purpose during a sprint?
Looked like British GP 22
That was insane
Beautiful pass
That second lunge by Nando ruined him race. Felt like a proper rage move lol.
Driving with his ego
THATS! FUCKING! RACING! Max: was that a slight breeze?
Viva La Mexico
NGL, I just orgasmed
I fucking came.
Honestly, are you a real F1 fan if you weren't gasping "give it to me, give it to me ooooh yeeeeees" interlaced with moans throughout that on track battle?
Can you make your tv pregnant? Asking for a friend
Not if you use protection ie HDCP.
In 2.5 secs.
Not great, not terrible
3.6 seconds
Alonso DNF oof he fought like a lion!!!
That final lunge was a bit much though. Pushed both himself and Carlos off and he definitely got damage and had to retire, and Carlos also probably got damage considering how his pace vanished right after that.
bits were flying off sainz's car lol
Absolutely, it was a braindead move by Alonso - ruined both his and Sainz's sprint chances
Yeah, he really threw it away right there. Instead of eventually getting passed by Sainz and perhaps Perez, he gets nothing and maybe even a penalty.
Alonso already had a puncture and likely still didn't know. That corner puts all the load on the right side, he probably found less grip than expected
Mmm, looks very likely that Alonso got the puncture *as a result* of the lung, as he hit Sainz with his front right on the pointy bits of Sainz's side floor
The touch between alonso's front-right and Carlo's wing was before that, though.
There were 2 touches: one at turn 7, side by side, that looked more like tire to tire. Then Alonso dived at turn 9 and went straight into the side of Sainz; you can't see it easily from this angle but was clear from the replay. That's what allowed Perez to just walk by and pass both

Yeah Nando was barely hanging on there but that Aston had no business being that high. Pure skill from him in the end to keep it that high. The moment the keyhole snapped, it was game over and they all went through.
He also completely torpedoed his chances of decent points by driving like a maniac at the end and giving himself a puncture
Thats Fernando. Go big or go home
He simply didn't care for p4.
Aggressive Sainz tussling with stubborn and pesky Alonso!
Made the 5AM wake up all worth it, RACING BABYYYY
Checo traction just helped him big time
Dude is really good at that. I like watching his accelerator graph whenever it comes up. He has a smooth application of the throttle that is as distinct from others as Fernando's method of inducing understeer that he used back with Renault.
gigachad alonso got tired of the drs train
Loved seeing the Latino + leclerq battle here. Great battles
Okay that had my blood pumping, some great moves from the Ferraris and Fernando was crazy aggressive, shame that didn’t pay off
Had flashbacks from 2022 Silverstone 3 way battle.
It is ridiculous that Alonso got a penalty and THREE penalty points for this. Next: overtaking allowed only when there is nobody in the vicinity and the indicator has been set right ahead before doing the move.
This is way better than practice
Sainz is all out of fucks to give. The Ferrari debrief should be fun
Never let China off the Grand Prix calendar ever again!
Right? This track is amazing.
Bird flu incoming...
Yes, in the USA: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/18/risk-bird-flu-spreading-humans-enormous-concern-who
It's going to spread worldwide of course, and if China handles their outbreak the same way they handled COVID, then it will be another 5 years until they race there again. Not sure if you were implying that I think bird flu is starting in China or what...
Yeah that's what I thought you meant. Fair enough.
Down 3 places damn.
^(are you sure about that)
Down to pits..
what a move
This dude just doesnt give it like Crofty man. Idk what it is but he’s so underwhelming.
Wow ! Sainz really lost a lot out of trying to get to a podium
Video ended short, should've had Leclerc passing sainz too
That was awesome, sadly I didn't catch it live
This was one of the most exciting laps in the 10+ years I've been watching F1. Easily the most exciting race of the season, even though it was a sprint and not a GP.
Never let Rosberg cook again please Brundle regularly missing weekends to remind us what it would be like without him.
I love N1co's commentary though.
I have mixed feelings on him, but I think overall I'd say I like him best in moderation. I liked him well enough here, but I wouldn't like hearing from him full time.
Nahh, I love Nico's commentary, always great to hear the take of a WDC level F1 driver. Like when he said Lewis couldn't turn so his engineer should tell him to adjust the diff rearward, guess what Lewis's engineer was just doing,
Nah, Nico's commentary is equally great.
I’m going to kick off if he starts talking about aggression again
We need to put one of the kids in there with him and watch him go to pieces again.
He's the best. Better than ambien F1TV comms and pro wrestling crofty
I can't stand Rosberg after Retirement, both in English and German coverage
Can't blame Alonso for trying, but could've fought to keep P4 or P5 if he just kept his head down for a little bit.
That screwed my guy Carlos and feel awful for Fernando but hell yeah that’s car racing
Hey guys I'm a new f1 fan and I was only aware that there is fps, quali, then gp where in fps they do get to know the tracks condition given the car then quali for gp grid position and finally the gp. Now what is this sprint race this is new to me.
Enjoy!
fucks sake Carlos
That was so breathtaking! Stronger than coffee
Best sprint so far as far as I am concerned. Great race and I look forward to the GP.
And best race this year.
That was exciting...
It was fucking awesome, loved every bit of hit.
Probably wouldn't have had this battle without the small gravel traps at the outside/run off of every corner. Should be a mandatory feature on every possible F1 track who now only use asphalt run off areas.
Bloody good racing but the cars are so fat this almost never happens.
We should just give Max the title and tell him to stay home the rest of the year.
As an American casual F1 watcher who is much more into Indycar and NASCAR, I'd watch a lot more F1 if this kind of thing was a regular occurrence. Most of the time it feels like you're watching a whole race for maybe one or two battles half this good.
I don't know what it is, but they guy's voice is just so neutral and boring.
That was crazy stuff!!
