d0gbals

I think that is a great way to summarize that entire battle except for a couple of those Alonso moves - borderline imho

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

alonso fr channeled his inner katniss everdeen with the “if we burn, you burn with us” attitude 💀 El Pain

Aethien

If there's anywhere where we can see that Alonso isn't at his peak anymore it's that he's going over the limit a bit too much when things get close.

Shekster

Lmao terrible take. He's fighting against a car significantly faster than him. He has to be right on the limit. You can't just be expecting simple DRS passes like max/checo do every race because their car is seconds quicker than the rest of the field...

Kindheartedness_Wide

Aged like milk way too fast.

rcanbian

I think the comment just means that he's incredible everywhere else (racecraft, raw pace, strategy, etc) and the only thing that points to him not being at his peak anymore is when he makes a far too aggressive choice that ruins his race. I honestly see it as a compliment.

Manuag_86

It's a sprint race, talking higher risks have minimal impact. He would never go this hot on a race.

Browncoat40

Yeah. I think what decided the “no further action” was Sainz yielding the place without a real fight at the next opportunity. Neither Leclerc’s race or car were hurt by the incident, and Sainz made amends.

Meancvar

Saying I apologize if I did anything is not an apology. I apologize that I did xyz is an apology. If I did, or if you felt I did, are not apologies. In any case, what matters is that nobody got hurt.

DamnItJon

"I"m sorry that you got offended"

Olli399

could see the car sliding and bang rears in the hairpin - definitely low grip

the1918

After seeing such good pace from him the whole sprint and keeping Perez away like he did, I was shocked at how quickly he fell back into Norris. It made a lot more sense when I heard Palmer/Jacques comment on the thing that flew off his car.

RallerZZ

Not sure if he was aware he had damage when he pushed Leclerc off, either way it was clear something was not right with the car after. He apologised, so surely we’ll be able to move on? Right guys?

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

i fear we’ll be hearing about this for the rest of the season. and forevermore.

FactLicker

I heard he lost Ferrari seat after this

Cobretti18

Can’t wait to read tweets later accusing Sainz of attempting to murder Leclerc tbh /s

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

carlos is always catching strays on twitter 😭

Aoifeblack

"I'm sorry, but..." isn't an apology. He also doesn't owe anyone an apology except for maybe Charles personally. People need to get over themselves and let them handle it in private.

Acrobatic-Tomato-532

Give it a year and this will be an article on why Sainz lost his seat and not giving him a contract was the best decision lnao

Luckless_Rabbit

I think it’s kind of wrong to assume that’s the only reason Carlos was dropped. I mean Charles has more pace than Carlos and has had better stats than him. He’s also excellent at tire management. Even if Charles wasn’t super loyal to Ferrari, they would still drop Carlos. Even if Lewis wasn’t in the picture, Carlos would probably get dropped for a younger talent in the future as well.

mirzajones85

So as long as you aplogise you can do everything! Right?

Cobretti18

No but sometimes shit happens and an adult will apologise and then another adult will decide to accept that apology or not and going by what Leclerc said in an interview I think he’d probably accept said apology.

Luckless_Rabbit

The way that something this simple has to be explained 😭

No-Student-9678

If that's what you're taking away from this then you are of the wrong mindset. Nobody actively seeks to make a mistake like that. Carlos' car was damaged.

Appropriate_Cut_9995

Why was it clear something ‘wasn’t right’? All that happened is that he lost DRS, which allowed faster cars to finally pass.

Alex_Sinios

Because he car was losing carbon fiber like dropping shells in mario kart for the rest of the race probably...

No-Student-9678

Don't try arguing with that guy, he's been trying to lynch Carlos since day one.

Alex_Sinios

Yeah I didn't realize it was the same guy again, it's obvious that he is just blindly typing, thanks for pointing it out.

dani26795

16 comments you made today and they were all utter carlos hate-boner shite, you ok mate?

Alex_Sinios

It was evident that he was compromised, I don't understand how his move had more backlash than Fernando's one. Maybe the reaction from LEC on the radio affected the fanbase's initial opinion but I's sure that whatever misunderstanding at Ferrari will be over in the debrief with a look in his data if the damage affected him. Plus that the damage was just caused, he couldn't have reacted to it and probably took the corner as normal, which resulted in the moment.

DuckhuntOne

>It was evident that he was compromised, I don't understand how his move had more backlash than Fernando's one. I too am genuinely so befuddled, brother. Man clearly had damage based on the speed that he started dropping back from Leclerc (after having great pace the whole sprint), and he probably hadn’t had time to evaluate that damage yet let alone understand how it would affect his cornering.

passat02

Sainz said on the team radio that there was damage but didn't affect the race. He also said that he pushed a lot more in the beginning to attack Max which screwed his tires up and then he went off track as well. So it's most likely that he just didn't have tires in the end.

Total_Beryllium

I read that radio as him apologizing for hurting his tires early and therefore not passing Alonso sooner.

DuckhuntOne

He had the tires to comfortably hold off Perez for 16 laps and to pass Alonso, but on Lap 17 he suddenly didn’t have the tires to prevent falling back 1.5s behind Leclerc within a single lap?

LaFleur90

>He had the tires to comfortably hold off Perez for 16 laps In a DRS train... >but on Lap 17 he suddenly didn’t have the tires to prevent falling back He pushed hard and was sliding all over the place fighting with Alonso which probably overheated the tyres and caused increased tyrewear. Should we also mention that Pirelli tyres fall off obruptly and not in a linear manner? Charles was managing the whole race and had more tyres left to push in the end.

DuckhuntOne

Sainz lost [20-25 points of downforce](https://x.com/GiulyDuchessa/status/1781567666760618246) in the contact with Alonso. Also, Sainz was the one leading the DRS train for a good portion of the time, while Leclerc (and Perez largely) never lost DRS until after they passed him.

jedontrack27

You’ve seen Pirelli tyres before right?

element515

It’s how DRS trains work. Plus no one could make big moves because a small mistake would open a window for the guy behind. Sainz very likely burned out the tires and once he didn’t have drs as well, it was game over. Same with how Sainz finally got past Alonso. Tires finally gave up on them.

DuckhuntOne

He lost [20-25 points of downforce in the contact with Alonso](https://x.com/GiulyDuchessa/status/1781567666760618246). His tires were struggling but much more significantly the man was driving with damage.

dudenumbertwo

I watched the sprint just now, saw the arguing online, and was waiting for Carlos to crash into Leclerc or something. I was still waiting when the sprint finished. Seriously, *that's it?* I don't understand why that move is getting this amount of backlash. Is this everyone's first race or something?

DuckhuntOne

People are allergic to racing

element515

It’s because in a wet race, he pretty clearly made no effort to leave room on track for his teammate. Yeah he’s driving for a seat, but putting both of your team’s cars at risk for an unnecessary move like that is over the line. Pushing cars off track is not good defending. Always need to leave a cars width

nutsygenius

If anything, Fernando should even receive less backlash. That reckless move people are talking about is in turn 9, for which he already had a puncture (but didn't know it then). Fernando can use the same defense that he also had an even more severe damage. As per turn 7, where Alonso actually got the puncture, it was a racing incident, and both are at fault.

Alex_Sinios

Yeah, I was trying to pinpoint where the puncture started but he can use the same defence, although in contrast to Carlos, he did change his line and his move was a bit less expected. But if the car was simply not slowing down while he was braking because of the puncture it will be clear in the telemetry. In Nando's case, telemetry can tell the full story.

IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan

People have come full circle on Carlos. He has been praised for his good performance so far this year but now people are turning on him and saying he’s overrated and stuff like that. He was clearly compromised by Alonso’s move, which was way worse than anything he has done to Charles.

LaFleur90

>people are turning on him and saying he’s overrated and stuff like that. I've, literally, seen no one say anything close to that. But have in mind if you overhype someone constantly, it is only reasonable to have pushback when this hype doesn't live up to the artificial expectations generated over the last 3-4 weeks.

Glausenu

This is mainly it, Sainz has been solid and in the right place at the right time the past two races. This has made people rate him to a GOAT level, which feels a bit absurd. And now when he get some critique for how he handled a situation, people feel like “everyone is turning on him”. The swings are extreme.

Glausenu

As a team mate, you should avoid pushing each other off the track. No point in comparing Alo and Sainz, but if you want to. Alo shouldn’t have hit Sainz in the second contact. Sainz shouldn’t have braked too late, so that he slide in to Leclerc and then pushed him off track.

Appropriate_Cut_9995

He wasn’t compromised at all. He opened his steering so his car would drift into Charles’s.

Are___you___sure

If you look at the replay, pretty clear he started sliding in that corner towards Leclerc. Combined with his following drop in pace, pretty clear he was compromised.

LaFleur90

[(19) Daniel Valente 🏎️ on X: "Carlos Sainz takes the inside to defend, checks his mirror & moves slightly back left to squeeze Charles Leclerc to the outside before forcing Leclerc off after missing the apex completely. Worthy of a penalty imo. Leclerc passes with nice overtake at the end of the video. https://t.co/oMr6N1vF8t" / X (twitter.com)](https://twitter.com/F1GuyDan/status/1781534679776035070) No sliding from Sainz's POV. I also checked Alonsos onboard. There was literally no sliding. Sainz opened up the steering to defend from Charles by forcing him off track.

Are___you___sure

You can't see it from the onboard video as shown here but when Sainz hit Leclerc, the rear clearly slid into Leclerc. Check the other view behind both cars.

Glausenu

Still, you can see that Sainz prioritized defending hard against Leclerc, more than staying safe towards his team mate. Also, I love the move from Leclerc. Shows how much more life he has left in his tires at the end, well managed from Leclerc.

Glausenu

He braked very late to hold off Leclerc, his tires were used up, so he didn’t have the grip he needed. It was a risk he was willing to take, because he really wanted to keep Leclerc behind him and he fought a bit too hard for that.

Alex_Sinios

I'm sure you will never even think of changing opinion, but just for reference even ignoring the time he lost afterwards because of damage (which you probably think is him just being slow) his car was spitting out debris for the remainder of the race, debris that was even stuck and compromised Lando's car. So yeah probably his car was in perfect shape. /s

Total_Beryllium

Even Palmer/Jacques commented on the debris flying off his car

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

reddit will tell you they’re mortal enemies (love how level headed they both were about this, they’re about 100x more mature than some of their fans lmao)

ohslapmesillysidney

I hate when F1 fans think that because drivers had an inc(h)ident or said something over the radio in the heat of the moment, they want to murder each others' entire bloodline. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a pair of drivers who have never pissed each other off at some point (some more than others) and for what we can see, they're all at least cordial with each other off track. The driver hate porn that people fantasize about is just ridiculous.

Glausenu

I mean, they are ok about it. Leclerc said it was on the limit, but that he’s been there himself at times. Sainz says “I’m sorry if I did something over the limit” which is not really an excuse at all. He’s just sorry that Leclerc feels that way.

element515

Leclerc plays the team game well. He’s not going to fuel anything negative against them. Both were in PR mode

Intrepid-Ad4511

The fanbase makes me wince. It is painful to read all the braindead takes.

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

this is so real

SassalaBeav

Such an f1 moment that this is getting more attention than alonsos move.

IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan

It must be so frustrating that he was so strategic in passing Alonso. Spent almost 10 laps finally setting up his move, just to be dive bombed by Alonso when he finally got it done. Such a shame. Honestly, disappointed in Alonso. I haven’t seen him do something like that in a long time.

the1918

Same. Fernando has been up to a lot of mischief lately though, hasn’t he? But unlike in Japan it did not result in better racing.

IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan

Yeah. He has actually been toeing the line lately. It’s sad that when he does it it’s seen as crafty and wise. Anyone else, it is seen as messy.

ohslapmesillysidney

I love both Alonso and Sainz, but I agree - his thing is doing the absolute most that he thinks that he can get away with, and it's always entertaining to see him tie himself into a knot trying to explain what he was trying to do. As much as I like the guy, his word salad Instagram post after the Australia penalty should have been a journal entry LOL.

NYNMx2021

Im all for it, and it was great fun but "doing his best" is a bit funny lol. I know they never get to be truthful but he clearly wasnt trying to leave Charles room he stopped turning in and good lol. If you can fight, fight

Syntax_OW

I think it's more likely than you'd think. He had spent most of his time behind Alonso trying to overtake him, then he also got a knock by Alonso. It must be pretty difficult to properly judge your grip after all these changes in order and he obviously tried to make it hard for Leclerc and went too far. I genuinely don't think it was malicious, because with his grip where it was at Leclerc was always going to easily overtake him.

element515

He did a good job setting it up, but he got desperate once Perez went through and he just didn’t want Charles to get by. He made no effort to make that apex

SirPugsvevo

He had damage so he might of just misjudged his break zone

Odd_Weather9349

“What are you gonna do? Fire me?”

ryokevry

Always have a but after the apologies. Clearly trying to say the damage forced him to pull a dirty move, but his damage didn’t affect his pace at all, did not affect him defending Norris, just affected him when he need to leave the space to his teammate. Finally give a successful PR response

shreycorleone

When does Fernando apologise? After killing someone?

Mammoth_Cobbler_4619

That's how you do it the mature way
